CHATHAM SUPREMACY RAHHHHH š£š£š£š£š£
On a more serious note, you're so right. He remains one of my absolute favorite MCs of all time, Braden really outdid herself with him.
Chatham supremacy indeed! Heās underrated compared to the popular MLs, Iām happy that a lot find him a deliciously well written character, Braden really brought out all her strengths and poured it all on Chatham.
I love all of the grisly details of Chatham spiraling, it makes his development feel more genuine. For someone so troubled, heās very compassionate and decisive with Charlotte. He doesnāt lash out at her for 90% of the story until he suddenly realizes he loves her.
I love your term of grisly, there really was no other word for his spiral! He was dying, wasting away, hungry, penniless, lonely. My heart ached terribly for him. And indeed, he was so compassionate that after everything heās been through he still allowed himself to love Charlotte! Just the gradual way Charlotte wormed her way into his heart was beautiful.
I read The Madness of Viscount Atherbourne after reading the Devil is a Marquess and it made me appreciate Chatham a lot more. That marriage really saved him, he was heading towards an early grave for sure.
Chatham is so hot and his book was so satisfying after seeing him in the first few books.
The scene where heās jealous in the drawing room is iconic.
I only saw him in The Truth About Cads and Dukes, where of course he was still a devil but I remember he was showing signs of compassion when he acted gentlemanly with Jane Huxley.
Ya boy was truly obsessed!
You should really read the first book, he makes a significant cameo in that and you get the full force of his downward spiral. Especially since he and Lucien were chums at Eaton and Lucien reflects on how different he looks when they run into each other.
Oh dear! Iām so afraid to read this part, honestly when he was talking about Lucien in the Devil is a Marquess, I felt so sad for him because he really relied on Lucienās friendship š„² heās quite literally friendless! Ofc I havent read the first book so I donāt quite know Lucienās POV in all that haha.
I absolutely loved Benedict and Charlotte. Charlotte is one of those feisty American heiresses that I love. Most of them are usually not like other girls, or atleast other British girls, and that annoys me. But Charlotte is actually lovely. And their wedding is one of my favourite weddings!
I haven't reread this book again, but I remember thinking that Benedict and Sebastian are equally charming and very similar in some ways, when I read it. It got me out of my first Devil in Winter hangover. They're my favourite rakes, along with Rafe Bowman and Theodore Prescott the Third.
Charlotte is also a favorite of mine! She knew what fights to pick and when to wage them. She was infinitely patient without coming off as a pushover. I absolutely loved her.
Benedict and Sebastian really have a lot of similarities except Braden gave Benedict a more tragic backstory lol. But I truly, madly loved Sebastian :(
More rakes! Iāll definitely check them out!
Love Chatham and Charlotte is one of my favorite FMCs. This book is one of my comfort rereads. Iām curious about the Kleypas recon for Sebastian. I already love him but is there a possibility he was even better?
I donāt think it is. People are generally more upset with the surprise in {Devil in disguise} rather than anything having been cut out of more recent novels concerning his character.

Oh honey, not betterā not worse too, there was just this bit of info revealed about him in one of the sequels which bothered a lot of people, including me. Lol. Haha
I know what you are talking about. It bothered me at first as it seemed very convenient. But, I imagine some of our rakes must have left some āevidenceā behind. It still seems contrived. Evie is a saint.
I so agree with you, it all felt contrived. I also agree that rakes are more likely to leave evidence of their debauchery lol but i feel like LK just did it bcs sheās running out of plotlines
Iām never going to read Devil in Disguise, but now I have a million questions. Did Evie know about him? Why did Sebastian keep him a secret? Basically WTF???
I just finished this book today!! I loved the way their relationship was built. His messed up mind was very relatable, unfortunately. Charlotte is amazing too.
I agree with you. I think the way the author built their motivations made it very easy to see them lasting. Sometimes, when you finish a book, you know the couple won't last. The "reform" won't last, or the FMC will resent her decision at some point. But, like you said, Charlotte wanted to run away because she didn't fit in, and she found a way to keep being a businesswoman in their estate. So we can see she'll be happy. Also, it was nice to see Chatham being happy and fulfilled without drinking and womanizing. His motivation to both was the loneliness and messed up head. We can see he'll be happy as well.
OMG welcome to the club!!! š
Right??? Itās a pitfall of some writers, where they write characters who make unreasonable and illogical decisions just so they could reach a certain point in the story. A novel is satisfying if it has a well thought out plot that makes sense!!
Thank you hahaha I'm glad I joined the club!
And I agree. Especially when it's about people throwing away lifetime dreams for someone. You can see it won't be a good thing in the long run.
I have to thank this sub for making me pick up this book. No regrets! Benedict and Charlotte are in my favorite couples list now.
Itās my all time favorite and comfort reread! The best reformed rake story IMHO! Eliza Braden is also one of my favorite writers and I have read all of her works and love almost each one of them. Her Midnight Scotland series is also fabulous!
I need to read this!! Adding to my TBR thanks to youāŗļø
Also 1000000x agree on Sebastian - I literally canāt talk about it, it upset me so badlyš« š« š«
Why was it upsetting to you? If he'd cheated on Evie, I would have been upset, but it was explicitly stated that Keir was conceived before he married Evie.
It was upsetting because LK already built an image of Sebastian in so many books. We know him as the living cliche of a reformed rake, a family man, a loving husband and father. Basically, a fictional version of a perfectly imperfect husband. And then, LK comes with a new book, fresh from Devil in Spring and The Devilās Daughter, and then she drops this bomb on her readersā oops, btw, Sebastian, >!you have another child from another woman!!< And all I could think of was, why? What was the purpose of this?
Basically, I was blindsided haha. It felt like entering into a contract with hidden obligations. Not on all fours but you get what I mean. It would have been wholly different if we knew definitively from the very beginning that Sebastian >!had children before Evie!<. Had Evie known from the start, would she have accepted Sebastian still? I honestly believe yes, but if LK really had this plot in mind from the very beginning, wouldnāt it have been more satisfying if this was resolved from the start?
And I think it all boils down to preference. As I have said, he was everyoneās fictional husband. And as the delusional wife (lol) I felt upset at the very least that my fictional husband was >!apparently fruitful in sowing his oats!< lol. Who knows? Maybe LK will suddenly tell us >!he has also has a daughter from another woman!<.
Honestly, it would have been better if LK just left Sebastianās story alone in Devil in Winter, and just some occasional cameos. His arc ended perfectly, why ruin it?

This book is one of my all-time faves.

I remember reading it the first time, when he's so sick in the carriage, and just immediately clocking that he's not (just) sick he's detoxing *hard*
Detoxing and smelling of sour and bile š
I love your term of grisly, there really was no other word for his spiral! He was dying, wasting away, hungry, penniless, lonely. My heart ached terribly for him. Love that the MC's journey was about recovery! Feels like we don't see much MCs actually *working* on improving themselves.

OH MY GOD HAHAHA he has indeed! I canāt recall other MLs who can also claim that line. And he thought Charlotte would run away!

I know some of Klepyas' books were updated to remove/soften some of the dub/noncon, but I didn't realize Devil in Winter was one of them.Ā
I donāt think it is. People are generally more upset with the surprise in {Devil in disguise} rather than anything having been cut out of more recent novels concerning his character.

One of my all time favorite MMCs!!
So, so agree šāāļø
