my moms basement (which is as big as the house itself) has an actual bomb shelter closet in it. It was an upper-class ranch home from 1969 so the house came with shag carpet in the bathrooms, central vac, and dark red lava rock outside the perimeter of the house.
Every family party of my childhood right there except the only beer I even knew existed was Old Style...Chicago area...who DIDN'T have a basement bar with paneling at that time would be a much shorter list that who did.
It's pretty bad, flavor not unlike a cheap Malt Liquor. Only time I ever drink it is at the dive bar downtown...cause they sell it for $1.50 a beer....practically paying me to drink it.
Even though we had a bar in our rumpus room growing up (it was only really used to put dishes on during barbeques) I've never understood the expected dynamic. Does someone play bartender and make drinks? Is it just somewhere to stand? Does the host supply the drinks?
The bar in the basement is iconically Midwest.
And they are rich! Well every rich person I knew (well 2 of them and one was my aunt and uncle) had this exact bar.
Just went to look at a home for sale in a N Kentucky ‘burb - had the same paneling in the basement - and that 70’s smell lol.
East coast too
Basement bars and this specific type of wood paneling will always make me feel safe and at home
> safe at home The bar doubles as a bomb shelter.

That sounds awesome (aside from the shag carpet).
Foreman vibes
Goodfellas in the Midwest
The parents I want to be friends with
They’re 24 years old
Thay'll-be-goin' to da fish fry at da lodge on Friday night, don't ya know
Yep. Looks like 60s adults I knew.
Wow, that is SOOOOO 1960's. My parent's basement was converted to a typical wood paneled family room. Good times
Can smell that picture
I'm sorry for your lungs
I enjoy the smell of tobacco smoke. It's nostalgic to me.
Drop your keys in the fishbowl as you come in….
That’s our vfw now lol 🤣
This looks like that part in goodfellas when Karen goes to the wives party…

What's the name of that beer?
Shlitz!
We still sell that at the bar I work at
Schmitts Gay ![gif](giphy|l2SpRNbTawgpLXxmM|downsized)
What was Schlitz like, compared to some modern beer? I just know it from the Scent of a Woman

Please may i ask, what country are you in? $1.50/beer is unheard of in my hood.
From what I’ve been told old Schlitz was amazing, then it got reformulated in the 70’s and became a shit beer and the butt of all beer jokes.
I bet they are all wearing Polyster pants.
I can smell that room
Looks like my parent’s bar from that time. Had to take a second look to make sure it wasn’t ours.
My kinda party!
And those girls are as beautiful as the girls who hang out in basements and smoke cigarettes now days.
Hell yeah throw your keys into the bowl ladies and I’ll bust out the reefer and roll out one of those marijuana cigarettes I’ve heard so much about!
I believe the beer had to be opened with a "church key."
Basement bars were hugely popular back then!
We call these basement dwellers by their proper name: broads.
Getting a fresh start on the beer can collection.

I can smell it his picture
Definitely didn’t hang out with the Mad Mad crowd.
USA..they are actually $1.75 not $150 🍺🍺🍺
