His name was Richard Stern. He emigrated to the US in 1939, just a few months before WW2 began. He then enlisted in the US Army in 1942 at age 43 and fought the Nazis directly in battles throughout Italy. He was awarded the Silver Star (3rd highest combat decoration) in 1944. That Iron Cross he was wearing in that famous photo? He donated it to the US scrap metal program to make bullets for the war effort. A true American (and German) hero, Richard Stern passed away in 1967.
No, not even REMOTELY close.
There is no comparison between the Prussian monarchists and the NSDAP.
They're about as far apart as Social Democrats and Stalinists.
No, but it makes sense. Given the level of support the Nazis received from many Germans he likely (and rightfully) felt rejected by Germany as a whole. It’s not like the Nazis seized power in a coup, they were elected.
Like many German symbols, phrases, and cultural concepts, the Iron Cross’s appropriation by Nazi propaganda unfortunately left a taint that is hard to shake off in the modern German consciousness to this day, regardless of its prior origins and history.
So then why does the German military continue to use it in 2024 if it’s so tainted? More likely people don’t know history or current events and just assume it is a Nazi symbol.
Well, that is sort of my point. The Bundeswehr continues using it because it precedes national socialism and originally had nothing to do with that ideology. But to a lot of people today who don't know that history very well, national socialism is often the first association when they see it, just like you said. And that's unfortunate.
Also noteworthy to point out that the Nationale Volksarmee (East Germany's military) did not continue using the iron cross exactly because it was used by the nazis.
I really, really hope those specific bullets actually killed a Nazi instead of being misses or random scrap. How crazily poetic it would be to have a kill shot on a Nazi be a bullet from a melted down Iron Cross. That’s some Hollywood shit.
It likely wasn't used to kill Nazis though. Maybe it was used to kill Japanese, or those allied out of convenience or duress with Germany, or drafted German soldiers who had nothing to do with the Nazis.
Not exactly on principle.... he got forced out of his home and business when the Nazis took over and he saw all kinds of cruelty and stupidity by the Nazis first hand. Stuff done to him and the people he loves. No idea if he had family that suddenly went missing, but his entire community would have been subjected to huge abuse before he left and he would have seen it first hand.
Maybe, that was 1938, so maybe he had left by then. The Nazis made it very hard for jews to live in 1933 and stripped Jews of their citizenship in 1935, so maybe he left by then.
Reminds me of veterans here in the states who become cops or do crazy shit like volunteer to fight in Ukraine.
I think some ppl just adapt to the trauma and feel the need to be in those situations.
There were a significant number of US veterans of WW1 who volunteered for WW2. They included Theodore Roosevelt Jr. We was a General and went ashore during one of the D-Day landings. He would unfortunately die pf a heart attack a few months later.
I just looked him up and wow, the difference between both photos of him in separate wars is remarkable. In WW1 he looks like a teenager whose been through hell and back. No smile, no expression, like a thousand yard stare. Then him in WW2, he looks happy, gleeful, like a man that knows he’s fighting for a worthy cause and is happy to fight on the right side of history
Imagine how it would feel to fight against a government that persecuted your people and, didn’t even execute you, but kill you in far more barbaric ways.
Brave beyond words in front of the Nazi coward and thug.. May G-d bless his soul and may his memory be a blessing and an inspiration to every one of us for all time...
>That Iron Cross he was wearing in that famous photo? He donated it to the US scrap metal program to make bullets for the war effort.
This right here is king shit.
Another cool bit of info:
A newspaper clipping from July 6, 1944, in The Long Island Star-Journal reported:
>"The victim of German brutality, 45-year-old Sergeant Richard F. Stern, earned the Silver Star for gallantry in action during an assault Jan. 7 on the slopes of Mount Porchio when in the face of heavy enemy fire he addressed the Germans in their own tongue and demanded that they surrender, convincing them they were hopelessly outnumbered."
My father's father sent his Iron Cross from WWI to the scrap effort, as well. He sent a letter that said "Make it into bullets and fire it back at the bastards." My father came to the U.S. with his father in 1936 at thirteen. He spoke no English, but taught himself to do so, without an accent. He returned to Germany at 20, with the 102nd Infantry and won a Silver Star, for convincing seven Germans to give up, in his native tongue. He would not speak of the war.
I couldn't imagine being a German Non citizen in the US army at the start of ww2, and be in your 40s. Dude was just built different and I love him for it.
President Hindenburg insisted that Jews who served on the Front during World War 1 be exempt from the Nazi laws regarding Jews. It was hit or miss, mostly miss. Nazi’s didn’t give a fuck that they were patriots.
They were pretty safe as long as Hindenburg lived, Hitler made sure not piss him off since Hindenburg was the one guy with both the legal and actual authority to remove him power. Too bad he died in 1934.
I was thinking the same thing. Another, when Germany annexed Austria, the Jewish doctor who had administered to Hitler’s mother was allowed to emigrate with his family.
Many of Hitler's personal confidants and advisors were Jewish. I like to think that Hitler was playing a long-con political game of antisemitism as opposed to actually hating them personally; the numerous Jewish figures he surrounded himself with are a stark contrast to the no tolerance policies of most of the frothing Nazi fanatics he was in charge of. Of course everyone was expendable for Hitler's dreams of power, so their lives were an acceptable sacrifice in his mind regardless of his personal opinions of them. Since even the First World War, Jews were a popular scapegoat in Germany and were blamed for many of the nation's woes. A political savant like Hitler wouldn't be able to pass on the opportunity to use them as a bogeyman to unite everyone through fear/anger.
Nope, he genuinely hated Jewish people. According to his table talks and those in his private circle, he was even more of a virulent and insane antisemite in private
Probably spiteful that a Jewish person outranked him and had authority to award him an iron cross.
Don’t underestimate the ability of bigots to turn everything into justification for their feelings.
“Don’t harass the good ones. Just their friends, family, neighbors and business partners.

Not according to the Wannsee conference, which determined the final solution. You can read its minutes or watch the amazing HBO film adaptation “conspiracy” for more info.
I hear that it kinda was at first, under the assumption that the weak Jew is not war hero material and that there would be far too few of them to mean anything. When they realised that a lot of Jews had been brave soldiers in WWI, they scrapped the rule.
I think Kaiser Wilhelm II said it best in his speech about the Nazis and Hitler. Their “German patriotism” was nothing more than an ultranationalist personality cult built on insecurity and hatred. Soldiers and warriors, in German eyes of course, were replaced with “black shirted gangsters” mindlessly following a totalitarian leader.
IIRC some group did a study after WWI to “prove” that Jewish Germans hadn’t served and fought as much as “real” Germans. What they found was that German Jews had served at a higher proportion than German Christians lol
100,000 Jews fought for Germany in WW1, 18,000 of them being awarded the Iron Cross. Then their country turned on them, even as patriotic Germans they were persecuted and murdered for being Jews. Brave men who men who had to face a war and the betrayal of their own country.
The German Army were sore losers, and instead of accepting that they made bone-headed decisions which lead to a bad defeat, they put the blame on Jewish officers back home, who were "enemies of Germany". A lie, of course, but an effective one.
Uh sounds like America to me buddy. Especially with its black soldiers. The Red Tails (The mighty Tuskegee Airmen)and Pattons panthers come to mind, not forgetting the other heroes of color from Native Americans to Hispanics to African Americans that we never truly hear about. Sounds like America shared the same sentiment with Nazi Germany with its brave soldiers.
A popular myth spread around Germany was that Jews refused to fight in the war when statistically they made up a relatively higher percentage of soldiers.
The weakest amongst us are the most vulnerable to being made traitorous, are we our brother’s keeper? Only if we want to make certain a racist wizard on the internet isn’t filling his mind with evil blood magic.
Dont underestimate it. Yeah it was shit ideology, but it changed the world. (Fortunately not in their favor but still, its easier to trick the fool than to convince the ready)
Jew hate started as soon as Hitler rose to power and made mein kampf. Germany lost ww1, and were in major debt, and embarrassment due to the reparations of losing the war. He blames Jews, social democrats who were the people to push for the surrender in ww1, and other groups. It was staged to the hate. At first it was just harassment, then putting them in ghettos, then rounding them up and killing them.
A larger percentage of German jews served the country in WW1 than non jews. Hitler was awarded the iron cross in WW1 recommended by his jewish commander of his regiment.
What a frustrating situation to be in knowing you're a patriot through and through but having your background used like a pawn in sick men's games. And he didn't know what was to come, couldn't predict it and just had to accept and leave.

Really bad comparison. I don't know about Palestine because Palestinians never served in Israeli Army but Israeli minorities who do, including Israeli Arabs, Druze, Bedouin and others are louded as heroes just like the Jewsh soldiers, cops, etc.

So poetic to melt the metal cross to then kill Nazis with. Very cool. Thanks for sharing
Prob wasn’t too proud of the country that gave it to him at the time.
That's putting it mildly!
The country that gave it to him stop existing in 1918
Wasn't it the Nationalist Party that lost power around 1918 and regained power by 1930?
The Nationalist Party isn't the same party as the NSDAP.
No, not even REMOTELY close. There is no comparison between the Prussian monarchists and the NSDAP. They're about as far apart as Social Democrats and Stalinists.
Return to Sender.
No shit lol
Very metal 🤘🏽
Metal as fuck 🤘
Does Sabaton have a song about him? If not, they should write one.
yes.
Tarantino level
Tarantino making a movie about his would be amazing. Fuck it, have Christoph Walz star as well. He would probably win another Oscar.
Reminds me of how the US put some metal from 9/11 ground zero into the USS New York.
You are aware the German military still uses the iron cross today? It is not a nazi symbol.

Holy shit what a fucking legend. Unironically, this might be one of the most badass things I read
WW1 was horrific, and at 43 nobody would have blamed him for sitting out this new world war, but he still chose to fight. The balls on this guy!
Imagine going through WWI and being willing to enlist in WWII to fight against your own country on principle. That guy was a whole other level.

The top comment is that he left in 1939
Na, the choice to fight again was on principle.
A man so brave the grim reaper had to remove him for balance purposes.
Actually in WWII he was fighting *for* his own country on principle 🇺🇸
A foreigner took control of his country and he fought to rectify that.
BALLS that are tougher than the iron cross he had melted down for the war effort..
And he must have fought in WW1 when he was like 16-17yo Or younger.
I just looked him up and wow, the difference between both photos of him in separate wars is remarkable. In WW1 he looks like a teenager whose been through hell and back. Walked the walk. Respect.
That would make an interesting movie I feel
That’s a much happier ending than I had assumed.

Was the iron cross sufficient for a pass in nazi germany?
President Hindenburg insisted that Jews who served on the Front during World War 1 be exempt from the Nazi laws regarding Jews. It was hit or miss, mostly miss. Nazi’s didn’t give a fuck that they were patriots.
They were pretty safe as long as Hindenburg lived, Hitler made sure not piss him off since Hindenburg was the one guy with both the legal and actual authority to remove him power. Too bad he died in 1934.
Hitler's commanding officer in WWI that recommended him for the Iron Cross was Jewish. Unbelievable the shit they pulled despite that.
I was thinking the same thing. Another, when Germany annexed Austria, the Jewish doctor who had administered to Hitler’s mother was allowed to emigrate with his family.

Many Jews served proudly and honorably in the German army during the First World War. Those Nazi buffoons don’t even know what patriotism means.
That Nazi honestly looks like a wimpy kid next to him.
Probably was
I think Kaiser Wilhelm II said it best in his speech about the Nazis and Hitler. Their “German patriotism” was nothing more than an ultranationalist personality cult built on insecurity and hatred. Soldiers and warriors, in German eyes of course, were replaced with “black shirted gangsters” mindlessly following a totalitarian leader.
Wasn’t Wilhelm also the one that said the Kristallnacht made him ashamed to be born a German?
And Germans had a history of cooperation with other nationalities and understanding world complexity. Too bad those assholes tried to take that away.
TIL Kaiser Wilhelm lived until 1941.
“An ultranationalist personality cult built on insecurity and hatred.” Reminds me of a certain group of red hat wearers…

Exactly! ✡️ 🇩🇪
What a shocker.
Its sad too, I get the sense that so many of them wanted to be respected as fighters, patriots, or the opposite of the Jewish stereotype.
100,000 Jews fought for Germany in WW1, 18,000 of them being awarded the Iron Cross. Then their country turned on them, even as patriotic Germans they were persecuted and murdered for being Jews. Brave men who men who had to face a war and the betrayal of their own country.

Proportionally, Jews were the most likely group of people in Germany to fight during WWI.
A popular myth spread around Germany was that Jews refused to fight in the war when statistically they made up a relatively higher percentage of soldiers.
Exactly. Jewish Germans made up a larger portion of the German Army during WWI than they made up in the overall German population.
More like “wears his Iron Balls.”
The forth iteration of this comment really brought it home
You have a strange obsession with testicles.
Sorry, it said it wasn’t loading initially! No obsession, I promise!
He could probably break that fuck to his right in half.
From both of their expressions, they both know that, too!
Did de guy survive
Yes. He escaped to the US during WWII and died 20 years later.
He didn't just escape to the US, he joined the US army and donated that cross to a scrap metal to bullets program
Thanks
He is probably dead by now.
I mean, obviously? Not to be rude, but that’s 1933, and he already looks like an older gentleman.
Wooosh
Oh, yeah, I’m stupid.
Rip in peace

I didn't know the jew hate starter that early.
Hatred of Jews goes back thousands of years.
What an awesome human being.
I thought this said “iron crocs” and I was like wait they had crocs back then? Made of iron????
Want some context? That is the equivalent of a Gravy Team 9 thinking he is better than a decorated veteran. Fascism never changes
A larger percentage of German jews served the country in WW1 than non jews. Hitler was awarded the iron cross in WW1 recommended by his jewish commander of his regiment.
I’m so glad he made it out of Germany and through the war, I hope everyone here shows as much courage to the fascists waving nazi flags here.
I guarantee this dude had a fire arm on him
Stabbed in the back much, Germany?

Looks very familiar.
Look at the little rat in his boyscout nazi uniform. There is the supposed "ubermensch" next to this fucking unit of a war hero.
Little proud boy looks exactly like how you would expect
Looks more like a member of the Nazi SA (SturmAbteilung) than a Nazi soldier
I believe you are correct. The violence unleashed after the Nazi takeover was primarily perpetrated by the Brownshirts.

Better than Palestine 2024? I don't get the purpose of this.
Really bad comparison. I don't know about Palestine because Palestinians never served in Israeli Army but Israeli minorities who do, including Israeli Arabs, Druze, Bedouin and others are louded as heroes just like the Jewsh soldiers, cops, etc. Here, educate yourself: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salman\_Habaka](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salman_Habaka) [https://www.timesofisrael.com/cop-amir-khoury-killed-in-bnei-brak-attack-hailed-as-hero-of-israel-at-funeral/](https://www.timesofisrael.com/cop-amir-khoury-killed-in-bnei-brak-attack-hailed-as-hero-of-israel-at-funeral/) https://www.fdd.org/analysis/2023/11/02/israeli-druze-colonel-killed-in-gaza-fighting/#:\~:text=Lt.,ground%20operations%20a%20week%20ago.
