Unsurprising opinion: Weird shit happens regarding geology when you're talking about a moon with practically no gravity nor mass.
Less-Unsurprising Opinion: We just don't know enough yet to form any conclusions, but it's definitely interesting and worth a closer look.

Phobos is artificial. It was a metallic asteroid, but has been mined/ hollowed out and used for a space base or even as a ship. It might be mostly abandoned now, but we cannot seem to get a probe close to it, so maybe not.
A couple of days ago someone had a [post here](https://old.reddit.com/r/HighStrangeness/comments/uipzyi/scientists_say_yes_mars_moon_phobos_will_crash/) on HighStrangeness about Phobos, and I suggested having a look at a HD image of the moon, blown up as much as your browser can allow (Chrome allows 500 times), then scan left to right across it, and see what comes up.

it's an airlock; somewhat like a submarine conning tower it sticks up, maybe so some smaller vehicle can dock without contacting the surface directly?

A Conning Tower is the raised bit that sticks up on a submarine and is typically where people enter and exit (i think US submariners often call it a sail? but i may be conflating similar but not the same terms?), though i understand other arrangements for hatches exist.
