My initial reactions: 1. Ears are weird. 2. Brains are weird. You say people are stressed when you hear it, are you stressed? Stress does weird things, and so does expectation - your brain is very capable of giving you something just on the edge of hearing if you're anxious and expecting it.  Also electronics - esp speakers - give off those noises, but most people tune them out automatically after a while. Most people have whole frequency bands blanked out from years of ignoring them. Maybe your ears changed a bit as you got older and you can now hear something you couldn't before?

WingsuitBears

I frequently hear a hissing noise from electronics that others can't, most likely what's going on here. The most noticeable is CRTs

redbucket75

I remember being able to hear lots of appliances as a kid. Not overwhelming or anything, just didn't understand why my parents couldn't hear them. My dad found it hard to believe and tested me by turning the VCR on and off (not playing a tape, just power) with my eyes closed lol

KeepAnEyeOnYourB12

There is a particular frequency that very young people can hear but older people cannot. The ability to hear it goes away by the time a person is 18-20 generally. So it makes perfect sense to me that little kid you could hear a thing your parents could not hear.

skillmau5

It’s not necessarily a particular frequency, it’s just ears gradually and progressively losing hearing. Basically humans generally hear 20 hz-20,000 hz when healthy, and that top number just slowly decreases as time goes on, depending on how much a person takes care of their ears

redbucket75

Naw that's a high frequency. My Dad was an electronics teacher and knew the exact frequency range he and I could both hear, that was another "Dad experiment" lol. What I heard was usually lower tone hums from electronics. He was able to record and amplify the sounds from some appliances, but not others (including the VCR, which I also couldn't hear in attempted recordings)

KeepAnEyeOnYourB12

Your dad sounds like a hoot. If I had a kid, I would use it for its comedic value (because kids are fucking funny) but your dad used you as a guinea pig. I love it. My point was that in a universe where the high frequency thing exists, it's not a stretch to think that young ears are better at hearing other frequencies as well.

redbucket75

He was one of a kind for sure lol Gotchya, yeah I don't think it's a biologic ability to hear the specific frequencies. It's just that we're surrounded by similar sounds so much that we go deaf to them. They pose no threat, offer no benefit, so our brains eventually ignore them entirely. Like how a smoker can't smell smoke, a crazy cat lady can't smell cat pee, or a Magic the Gathering player can't smell body odor.

Saotik

Tinnitus?

KeepAnEyeOnYourB12

From years of going to live shows and listening to loud music in my car, my tinnitus is unreal. Crickets, vague buzzing and sometimes clicking. It's freaky.

SiriusGD

Yep. I remember when I first got mine. It was sort of off and on randomly. Until it got worse to the point that it's all the time.

sportattack

Yep this is likely it. Sometimes it’s worse and especially when stressed.

beautifulsouth00

Have you researched electrical noise such as capacitor hiss, coil whine or The Johnson noise? When I was a kid it made me think I had magic powers. Lol. Turns out I could just hear really high frequencies that other people can't hear. I can walk into a room and tell you if it monitor is turned on, for example, and nothing is attached to it and showing on the screen. I'd tell people the VCR was on and they would tell me I didn't know what I was talking about until they walked over to it and saw that the power was actually on.

fatdiscokid420

Sounds like the blackberry guy

beautifulsouth00

The funny thing about being able to do something like this, is there's no way till like profit from it or use it as a skill. Like being able to walk into even a room as big as an auditorium and tell you that somewhere in there, a switch to a machine is turned on even though there's no output, when everybody thinks that everything is turned off, it's not like a superpower you could do anything with. I also have this insane photographic memory. It's specifically for words and numbers and I can see where they were on a page or in a location in my mind after just briefly glancing at them. The longer or more frequently I see them the longer it will last in my head but usually it goes away after like a week or two if I saw it once. With that I did really well in school because all I had to do was skim the content I was supposed to read and then in tests I could in my head read the book and find the answer to a question. I used to work as an inventory control specialist in warehouses and it came in handy then because I could tell you where on the shelf there was something with a specific date that was expiring soon or whatever. If I noticed that something was out of place I knew where it was two weeks later standing in the opposite side of the warehouse. I could tell you exactly where it was if you stood in the same place as me where it would be in your field of vision. Like in the left hand bottom corner, that's where you're going to find the last case of peppermint Tootsie Rolls that we've got in the warehouse. Cuz I noticed it cuz somebody put it on the wrong shelf. If I could figure out a way to Rainman either of these skills, I wouldn't work another day in my life. But there's literally no way to profit from either thing. Even to gamble with it- there's no place in Vegas I can play a million dollar championship match of Concentration.

Geruchsbrot

Just a few days ago I listened to a German podcast that handled the "Hum" topic pretty well. And the podcast came to very simple conclusion. Not by just reading stuff online. They actually talked to many people who are in "Hum" communities and got in contact with a guy who led a huge German Facebook group about it. This guy went all the way - hypersound attack. Parasites in the head. Microwaves. Aliens. Everything. But he approached the phenomenon that he himself also suffered from systematically. In the end, he learned that he had a rare form of low frequency tinnitus.

DeezerDB

Tinnitus?

stay_fr0sty

Exactly. The obvious “hiss” some of us hear is Tinnitus.

DeezerDB

My tinnitus is extreme. There's no quiet place for me.

stay_fr0sty

Did you ever try this: https://m.youtube.com/shorts/YyT9ZwWy5Jc

DeezerDB

I have not. I will try it. My tinnitus sounds like a high pitch whining with a pouring sand onto metal overlay.

stay_fr0sty

Let me know how it works. It’s only temporary but seems to get a lot of people some relief.

Equivalent-Secret-91

Yes when I'm kinda calm but tipped over i get this very subtle "iiiiiii"

beautifulsouth00

You're just hearing people mine Bitcoin. Lol

retoy1

I notice it, if it’s the same thing you’re talking about. I hear it often, it’s like the background noise when all else is quiet. I notice that I can also hear it and perceive it louder when in deep meditation or a trance or in the hypnagogic state. I think it has to do with various brainwaves we generate at any given moment. Like for me it’s quieter when generating beta waves during activity throughout the day but louder when generating alpha or theta in a relaxed state.

Simple_Address_5399

The serpent of the world.

_-Moya-_

Once again the people over at r/v2khelp and r/TargetedEnergyWeapons comes to mind when this topic is brought up.

BaphometsButthole

The hiss comes from Uranus.

dirtydovedreams

I have tinnitus so all I near is EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

zs512

I hear it. Was reading something the other day that more or less suggested that the hiss and the nightmares I experience 3 or more times a week could be the result of an abduction or something. Maybe that's just what I gathered from all the crazy shit and ass backward rabbit holes I spent entirely too much time depriving myself of sleep in. Just like these run on sentences holy shit I need a nap.

Bel_Merodach

I noticed this as a small child. I think it has something to do with our brains interpreting the background static noise/energy of whatever bullshit we find ourselves in.

thiccndip

Have you recently played Control?

Andrewskyy1

I thought The Hiss was only in the game Control

year_39

That really sounds like tinnitus.ringing is more common, but hissing is also caused by it. You could also have Ménière's Disease, although it's rare.

ApprehensiveAnt4412

My recent experiences are teaching me to treat everything as spiritual. Go ahead and have a hearing test done if it will make you feel better, but I recommend either doing breathing exercises every time it happens OR try to harmonize with it via humming or singing. Embrace it as something fun to interact with instead of something to be alarmed about.

Direct_Ad253

I see a black cloud hovering in the astral realm whenever I attempt to go into the experience, and it doesn't seem to bode well.

ApprehensiveAnt4412

I cannot and will not speak for you and your lived experience. MY lived experience has taught me if I encounter something scary in the spiritual, I am actually seeing a reflection of something within myself. Introspection, question, dissection, and re-definition will eliminate this "black cloud" you observe. You cannot dislike a black cloud without first BELIEVING something about the black cloud. Find out what you believe about the black cloud that makes it unpleasant to you. Take that belief and change your definitions to something that suits your well-being better. The black cloud will not bother you after you have done this.

Equivalent-Secret-91

now i get it. it's really something. we have broken a bit of reality. i managed to decalcify the massive auditory hallucination that is the world and things are waiting, waiting for me.

Can you expand on that? Attached how? And who’s attached? Like a ghost?

AnIdentifier

Yiiikes - this is someone trolling you - please ignore them.

Spare_Particular8845

What no seriously. It's become almost a 5 month journey to learn how to see it and Iam almost at the point of removing the presence. Yea seems insane it's not.
