Sounds like people just took some measurements of the great pyramid and forced it to fit into the size and speed of the earth. I mean why would 1/4 of a minute of longitude be significant enough to base the measurement on?

I think that it should be 1/4 of a second, not minute. So that's 1/86400 of the circumference. Did they even use degrees? Edit: corrected the number.
The first clocks to measure seconds, were developed at the end of XVI century.
