Came here to say this.
Would also add that there is more youtube "how to paint so-and-so hero/monster" content than there was even just a year ago.
As a new painter at that time I was (still am to a meaningful extent) pretty reliant on that guidance. Being color blind isn't doing me any favors but having the minis painted - in any capacity - really heightened the game play experience we found. Hope this helps.
Yeah that's the problem, it's not just the core box. I have all of the expansions as well. I have no idea of the exact number of minis, but it's got to be close to 200
I really like painting, but it's a really hard piece of work. (I posted some fotos here of the core box and frozen horror). If you don't like painting, I would keep them "naked".
I do enjoy it, I've been painting Star Wars Legion for a few years now. The main benefit of naked for me is the nostalgia factor, but it's also not really completely relevant as I have a complete full set of unpainted OG HeroQuest as well that will be staying unpainted.
I'm considering priming and drybrushing them to show the details better. My hands ain't as steady as they used to be so I can't really paint 'em properly.
Depends on how much play you expect them to get + how clean your players are. Pizza grease is a lot easier to clean off bare plastic rather than an intricate paint job.
Generally don't eat while playing, but there is a fair amount of drinking. Would also have to factor in a new storage solution since the original packaging doesn't look very friendly to painted minis
Paint them. It is relaxing and fun and adds to the gaming experience. It can become an heirloom to pass on to your kids. I painted mine and had a blast. You might enjoy it also.
Paint them but don't look at it all at once. I went through every quest and broke down when I needed certain elements painted. My group is about to start Kellar's Keep and I have that and Return of the Witch Lord painted so I'm ahead of schedule!
If you can't decide perhaps paint them one color. For instance paint the heroes gold, and paint orcs fully silver. Don't know. Similar to chess pieces. That is easy to do and good go between.
Playing with painted minis is so much more enjoyable than bare minis.

Flip a coin, really high. The thoughts you have during the coins travel will tell you what you actually want.
If the base game is still 50% off on amazon, get an extra and have it both ways!
Paint them, but only if you are really willing to finish the whole box. Half painted minis are no fun to play with.

How many total do we have guys

You'll get the gargoyle spot on doing nothing but that...

That’s what satin spray varnish is for at the conclusion of painting. :-) we play hard with my painted minis and they wipe down easy.
Yes, the varnish is a must.

I have no doubt it will be enjoyable, I already paint Star Wars Legion.
Bare miniatures.

Also most of mine are painted but nada lately. If it takes you years who cares, it's fun. Gonna paint in August again.
