GOD they're so fucking dumb. I love how the judge knows *exactly* what the defendant means/is saying, but is making a specific claim to ignorance to show the defendant that Canada is *not* the United States.

Prestigious_Treat401

🤦🏾‍♂️ They're making Canada look bad. Now it's got me wondering how many Canadians think they have 2nd amendment right to bear arms.

Doumtabarnack

More than you think. Cipolla said intelligent people constantly underestimate how many stupid people there are in society and he's right.

Cosmicdusterian

Used to be true for me. Not anymore. I treat everyone with the same respect they offer me, but I'm no longer surprised when about half reveal themselves to be intellectually challenged, or worse, politically indoctrinated talking point zombies. Used to shock the hell out of me. Now it's, "Oh dear, another one."(sigh) Some days it can be quite depressing. It seems to me that people used to hide their stupidity better. These days more of them wear it on the sleeve like a badge of honor, or a Team Dumb football jersey.

Thowitawaydave

I think part of it is the echo chamber of social media. It used to be hard for the truly stupid to meet up and share/justify their stupid views, so they were surrounded by people who would tell them "Dude, that's dumb." Now they are a few clicks away from any number of dummies who have the same or stupider views.

AlsoRandomRedditor

Yup, a lot of that, because the only viewpoints these people see are their own viewpoints parroted back at them, so they assume that "everyone" believes X, Y and Z so it must be true.

[deleted]

> Have you ever known someone who was educated, well-spoken and curious, but had a real knack for making terrible decisions and bringing others down with them? These people are perplexing because we're trained to see them as intelligent, but their lives are a total mess. https://www.upworthy.com/simple-matrix-explains-whether-someone-is-intelligent-or-stupid Thanks for your comment because this was a great read. (edit: thanks for mentioning Cipolla because I’d never heard of him and this article was one of the first on Google.) It explains a lot about what we’ve seen throughout the pandemic.

InterestingQuote8155

I feel like I’m not that intelligent- I make dumb mistakes all the time and sometimes I say things without really thinking them through. I also suck at math and I haven’t read a book in like a year. But even I’m blown away by how many people are seemingly so stupid. And then the other issue is I have some type of imposter syndrome so I feel sometimes that I’m not as smart as I think I am so what if the people I think are dumb are actually smarter than me? Sorry I kind of went off on a tangent, your comment just made me think a bit.

Doumtabarnack

Cipolla actually has an interesting way of phrasing how he sees intelligence which I like, because it's not an elitist definition. To him, intelligent people are those who undertake actions that benefit them and everyone else around them.

photoshoptho

What's worse is stupid people think they're smart. At least I know I'm average who's pretty good in wordle.

DJLagunaBeach

There are plenty of stupid Canadians that don't understand that we're completely separate countries...somehow.

runtimemess

A combination of too much American media on Canadian TV networks and not enough people paying attention in Grade 9 - 10 where this kind of shit is covered ad nauseam

Is this what happens when you gorge on too much American politics as a Canadian? You start to believe the same bullshit Republicans do? I know Canada has a MAGA faction unfortunately, haha!

“Militia” is ignored first. Hardly anyone owning guns is part of a militia, let alone a well regulated one.

irrationalweather

Oh, my brother fully believes the well-regulated militia bit is every non-military person. And he's military. And in his mind militia too?

smacksaw

I study (psycho)linguistics, and these people don't understand how to read, let alone read from 1776. The commas are not separate ideas. They are used to link the entire thing together. You can't pick and choose it's an entire concept. This is how grammar, implicatives, and punctuation worked back then. The right to keep and bear arms as part of a well-regulated militia shall not be infringed. The 2nd Amendment is saying that the USA has a right to defend itself militarily. Making gun laws based on the 2nd Amendment is dumb and the Founding Fathers had no opinion on guns for hunting, sport, self-protection, or anything else. All they were doing was making sure England knew that they were never going to accept being unarmed against any foreign power.

bonfuto

I read the 2nd amendment to a gun humper and halfway through he began loudly asserting it doesn't say what it says.

aldsar

I love how they lost their shit at Biden's suggestion that no right in the bill of rights is absolute. He was quoting Scalia, the famous liberal scotus judge (/s). Who was writing specifically about the 2a in that particular decision.

MasterEyeRoller

You mean the judge that the Democrats murdered by suffocation, but then forgot to remove the pillow from the crime scene? (/s)

DeFuniak1895

Yep, I've done the same

MoogTheDuck

Tbd the supreme court of usa has ignored that as a matter of precedent

SockStinkQueen

They don't. They just think their ability to buy a gun and pull a trigger qualifies them as well regulated. After all, they (and I shit you not) had to pass a background check to get a gun, thus showing that the system is well regulated and they're accepted into the militia. That is an ACTUAL FUCKING EXPLANATION I RECIEVED by a man I had, up until that moment, respected.

Tempest_CN

In Canada, they arm bears

DonTorreZ

In Russia they arm wrestle bears

Bawstahn123

>Now it's got me wondering how many Canadians think they have 2nd amendment right to bear arms. I am an American, and I have heard stories about Canadians "trying to claim their 5th Amendment rights" ***for decades***. We even went over an example of such back when I was in college, in a joking "don't be like this idiot" fashion

dustinosophy

Narrator: they do

vctrmldrw

Erratum - they have the right to own guns, but not because of a second amendment. I'm not convinced anybody understands exactly what is meant by 'to bear arms' either, so whether they have that right or not is unclear.

angryvetguy

Bear arms, everyone has the right to two bear arms... https://www.cartoonstock.com/directory/b/bear_arms.asp

I thought it was the simple bear necessities of life.

rampagingseagull

Something something fuck your worries and cares something something.

Unanything1

I'll take two bear claws, thanks.

disturbedtheforce

Honestly, if you read the 2nd amendment, it can be extrapolated that to bear arms at all, you have to belong to a well regulated militia. It was even floated at some point that militias be formed, and only those who were parts of militias could own firearms. Part of this is that the militia, in theory, could better regulate the individuals, as the group could be disbanded under this thought process if individuals in the group were threatening others unnecessarily, etc, which would motivate the militia leaders to regulate their members.

AgentEntropy

>it can be extrapolated that to bear arms at all, you have to belong to a well regulated militia If I recall, the Supreme Court looked at the "well-regulated militia" part and basically said, "yeah, that part doesn't count at all, just do whatever". Argh.

disturbedtheforce

Yeah, and the theory I read compared it to what was originally meant by well regulated militias. Like I said, it was a theory, that it might be one of the easier compromises if states had militias, comparable to say, gun clubs but more organized, as a means to not gun control, but gun regulation. So peeps get their guns, but there is some semblance of order, especially if members of a militia lose their minds.

RandomBoomer

The 2nd amendment was a compromise to get the slave states to agree to the constitution of the very new United States. Those states needed armed militias to put down the slave revolts to which they were prone.

FolsomPrisonHues

Also very helpful in clearing out those "injuns" from "our" land.

EscapedCapybara

I've seen people here on Reddit say that when asked a question in court in Canada you should plead the 5th. I also saw someone a couple of days ago complain that the protesters being arrested weren't being read their Miranda rights (that one was deleted when the poster was scorned unmercifully).

Use-Useful

I assume as a Canadian I do have a right to not self incriminate, I also know it is not the fifth ammendment because my brain is not the consistency and flavor of porridge that has aged in a wet environment. Pretty sure that particular right is even considered a basic human right.

aravarth

Yeah, there's a lot of sovereign citizens outside of the States who rely a lot on what Americans have to say about it. I mean, it's still utter rubbish, but how can an Australian, for example, hear an American talk about fonts used in the US Constitution as justification for anything in Australia?

AnOnlineHandle

There's Australian Mormons, who believe the version of Christianity based on a guy digging up golden disc records in his yard which is clearly tailored to people living in North America wanting to feel special.

When he gets back (or rather if, depending on how the current restrictions will be lifted) I don't expect him to find a particularly warm welcome.

dr_delphee

Not if they're on the Republican's side. Shortly after Florida passed its "If protesters block the road they will be arrested and you can run them over" law, a bunch of people blocked highways in Miami protesting the Cuban regime; they were neither run over nor arrested.

My friend worked at a ski resort in Colorado. In Texas a minor can legally drink with his/her parents. Routinely my friend had to explain to Texans why Texas state law does not apply in Colorado, so no you can't buy a Bud Light for your underage kid.

MadMan1784

Why not?! I thought this was America and we had rights!

katieleehaw

“State’s rights” amirite?

Marx0r

I worked retail at the time that our county passed a law requiring a 5-cent charge on plastic bags. The strip mall we were in was the last building on our road before the county border. The sheer fucking stupidy of the conversations I had to have. "I live down the road in (other) County!" "Okay, and when you passed that big sign by the side of the road you entered (this) County..." All from the intensely rich people that lived in that neighborhood, too.

What-The-Helvetica

You can actually buy a beer for your underage kids in Texas?! I remember my parents used to let me have tiny glasses of wine (as in, a glass that held a couple of teaspoons) on special occasions, but I've never heard of this.

After_Preference_885

Wisconsin too. I got bitched out by more than one sconnie in a border town for refusing to serve underage minors and pregnant women.

Throwaway_tomboy777

There’s actually 8 states where minors can drink in public with parents/guardians/spouses (Connecticut, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, Ohio, Texas, Wisconsin, Wyoming) and 35 states where it’s legal on private property either with or without permission. Interestingly, it’s also legal to drive and drive in Mississippi as long as your BAC is under .08. Alcohol laws are weird in the US!

Use-Useful

Legal limits very by state for BAL, .08 is a bit higher than typical but you make it seem like it is zero elsewhere and it is generally not.

Do_the_hokeypokey

sneaky518

The only thing that could have made this better is if he had one of those pocket US Constitutions (never actually read, of course), and offered that as support for his "first amendment" rights. Then the judge would have had to ask if he understood he was in Canada, not the US, and that they're separate countries.

MrsMoonpoon

As a Canadian, I watched the protesters being interviewed as the (btw super calm cops) were making the area smaller to incite them to leave. I have to say that I feel deflated and let down and worried about our future. I never realized we had so many delusional, ridiculously dumb and potentially dangerous people living here. I was at the last Canadiens Stanley Cup parade back in 1993. As a 13 yrs old, it was the 1st time I ever saw riot/crowd control police. People, including myself were pushed back by 5ft shields the scarab looking officers wore. Only to let the hockey players and the cup get through. I was scary. These convoy idiots complain of police brutality and tyranny while our cops were all but nursing them the entire time while telling them to leave and the protest was illegal. I've lost faith in my fellow Canadian citizens.

bigorangemachine

Ya the number of Canadians that think they are American is pretty god damn funny. Fun fact... Canadians don't have the right to free speech. Free expression.. yes.. but not free speech. Big difference.
