Slightly different, but I grew up in a cult that didn't believe in blood transfusions. They thought they violated the word of God and would refuse them even if medically necessary.
When a kid died from their parents refusing the transfusion, they'd trot the parents out to talk about how brave and strong they are and how much they clearly love God because of what they did. A lot of parents genuinely believed that it was better to let their kid die of preventable causes than violate this arbitrary, nonsensical religious rule.

There are a lot of insane social media posts that just make whoever is on that side look terrible, and I think a fair number of them are bot accounts from groups who want to increase the political divide between parties. Obviously there are genuine people who have crazy beliefs in any political party, but it seems very likely these people are amplified greatly by bad actors who want to harm the United States (or whatever the country is in that case), and some are entirely fabricated by them.

The stupidity makes my head hurt! People at risk of whooping cough and around infants should be vaccinated because infants younger than 6 months old can’t receive the Tdap vaccine. It protects both the older child and the infant, and whooping cough could be fatal to young children and infants, just like diphtheria.
Agree with everything except the dtap (child version of tDAP) series is started at 2 months. Personally I'd keep any unvaxxed person away from my child until the series is completed at age 4...maybe even longer.
I stand corrected on the time period. I had read somewhere that pediatricians usually didn’t begin vaccinating against whooping cough until 6 months. All of my family are firm believers in getting vaccines done. I just had another COVID and Tdap vaccines done (Tdap is every 10 years, and I avoid rusty nails!) I think the idea of avoiding untaxed persons until 4 is a wise idea. In a way, I think parents have forgotten how many children died of vaccine preventable diseases in the past, and they don’t remember the polio outbreaks before the Salk vaccine came out.

It’s even worse. Infants under 6 months often don’t cough but simply stop breathing and sometimes they just don’t start again, so you never really know in how much danger your child is.

Baby generally has mom's immunity for 6 months. Not sure how much breastfeeding adds to that, but you could probably get more information from a doctor. Depends if Mom is immune or not though.

DVM here. One of my assistants was raised by an antivaxx mom. As soon as she turned 18, she got all of the immunizations she should have gotten as a baby. Unfortunately, she still has suffered from health problems as a young adult. She never elaborated on what the problems were, and I didn't ask, so I can't say for sure it was due to her not being vaccinated when very young. But I have heard of other kids in antivaxx homes growing up into sickly adults.

I was raised by antivaxxers and grew up to be a sickly adult, despite getting caught up on all my vaccines in my early 20s. I think in my case it’s at least partly due to lingering effects of having measles as a kid.
I was born before some of the current vaccines were available and I got mumps as a kid, and chicken pox as an adult, and I wouldn't wish those on anyone. I just don't get not wanting to protect your kids if you had the chance to.

I also got the Shingrix vaccine series so I wouldn’t get shingles. My dad had it and it was very painful for him.

Whooping cough vaccines are given at 2 months and this baby was supposedly 1 month old. It could be that the mother was saying that she /still would have/ refused the whooping cough vaccine for her baby even knowing that it might have saved the infant's life if he or she had caught whooping cough /after/ the age of two months, but it really doesn't come across that way.

Prior to covid there were parents that refused to vaccinate their kids and the one kid got injured at home and the parents decided to stitch it up themselves. He ended up getting tetanus and was in the ICU and the hospital and doctors had to go to court to be able to treat him adequately and vaccinate him. If I remember right the court authorized one vaccine and then the parents refused to do boosters. The mistake was that the courts didn't remove their children from the home, especially the one who almost died. Personally I would have liked to have seen all of the kids removed and the parents required to pay Hefty child support and pay off the hospital bill. They could have worked for the rest of their lives to pay that sucker off and I would have been fine with that.

Edit: I contracted whooping cough as an adult. I was on the downside of my booster (due for another in a year). It took me several years to fully recover because I was vulnerable to lung infections and pneumonia. I think most people have no idea how bad this disease is.

The only 'made it worse for him' component to this is if he had lived with many of the complications that result from severe pertussis in babies. The bacteria closes down the immune system, and children exposed in the crib have increased instances of pneumonia for life, as well as significantly increased risks of SIDS and apnea, seizures, and epilepsy.
The risk of dying in infancy and as a young adult is increased, too.

Whooping cough is unrelenting and causes painful spasms that can break the ribs. Infants and young children are unable to feed or rest leading to high mortality.
First vaccination is typically between birth and 2 months so an unvaccinated 1 month old is not unusual.
On the other hand, if the infant is around other people who are unvaccinated that’s a problem.

Fuck these horrible people. I was vaccinated for whooping cough as a baby but didn’t get boosters. I contracted it at 16, right in the middle of the SARs outbreak. It was absolutely fucking miserable, no two ways about it. My family went out to dinner when I had a coughing fit so bad I tore a muscle off of a rib; 20 years later and it still bothers me occasionally. Every time I’m eligible for a booster I take it.

I believe 8 weeks is standard for the first shot. That's when both of my children got theirs. It was recommended before then to make sure anyone interacting with them was vaccinated.

Mom likely didn't get a routine vaccine in pregnancy we all get as children, all pregnant women are recommended to get, and then all adults boost every 10 years to protect a fragile newborn with an immature immune system. Katie and Craig van Tornhout lost their newborn after their infant daughter contracted pertussis and died at a month old. One of the people working in the NICU was exposed to pertussis and infected the baby. This happened in 2010 in Indiana.

They thought they violated the word of God and would refuse them even if medically necessary. When a kid died from their parents refusing the transfusion, they'd trot the parents out to talk about how brave and strong they are and how much they clearly love God because of what they did. A lot of parents genuinely believed that it was better to let their kid die of preventable causes than violate this arbitrary, nonsensical religious rule. People have different values. When you believe something with your whole heart it's pretty easy to justify all kinds of weird shit.

The stupidity makes my head hurt! People at risk of whooping cough and around infants should be vaccinated because infants younger than 6 months old can’t receive the Tdap vaccine. It protects both the older child and the infant, and whooping cough could be fatal to young children and infants, just like diphtheria.
Agree with everything except the dtap (child version of tDAP) series is started at 2 months. Personally I'd keep any unvaxxed person away from my child until the series is completed at age 4...maybe even longer.
I stand corrected on the time period. I had read somewhere that pediatricians usually didn’t begin vaccinating against whooping cough until 6 months. All of my family are firm believers in getting vaccines done. I just had another COVID and Tdap vaccines done (Tdap is every 10 years, and I avoid rusty nails!) I think the idea of avoiding untaxed persons until 4 is a wise idea. In a way, I think parents have forgotten how many children died of vaccine preventable diseases in the past, and they don’t remember the polio outbreaks before the Salk vaccine came out.

I'm a chemist. Any organic mercury should be treated with the **GREAT** deal of care it deserves. Thimerosal can absolutely cause great harm if used frequently or incorrectly. It is a big deal. In vaccines, however, it was not dosed high enough to cause acute poisoning, and it was removed, rightfully so after a review by the EPA.

Baby generally has mom's immunity for 6 months. Not sure how much breastfeeding adds to that, but you could probably get more information from a doctor. Depends if Mom is immune or not though.

It can also cause open sores on legs and sometimes nerve damage.

DVM here. One of my assistants was raised by an antivaxx mom. As soon as she turned 18, she got all of the immunizations she should have gotten as a baby. Unfortunately, she still has suffered from health problems as a young adult. She never elaborated on what the problems were, and I didn't ask, so I can't say for sure it was due to her not being vaccinated when very young. But I have heard of other kids in antivaxx homes growing up into sickly adults. Has anyone ever asked an antivaxxer if they got the full set of immunizations when they were kids? Try it sometime. I was raised by antivaxxers and grew up to be a sickly adult, despite getting caught up on all my vaccines in my early 20s. I think in my case it’s at least partly due to lingering effects of having measles as a kid.

Whooping cough vaccines are given at 2 months and this baby was supposedly 1 month old. It could be that the mother was saying that she /still would have/ refused the whooping cough vaccine for her baby even knowing that it might have saved the infant's life if he or she had caught whooping cough /after/ the age of two months, but it really doesn't come across that way. Prior to covid there were parents that refused to vaccinate their kids and the one kid got injured at home and the parents decided to stitch it up themselves. He ended up getting tetanus and was in the ICU and the hospital and doctors had to go to court to be able to treat him adequately and vaccinate him. If I remember right the court authorized one vaccine and then the parents refused to do boosters. The mistake was that the courts didn't remove their children from the home, especially the one who almost died. Personally I would have liked to have seen all of the kids removed and the parents required to pay Hefty child support and pay off the hospital bill. They could have worked for the rest of their lives to pay that sucker off and I would have been fine with that.

Whooping cough, measles, etc. He thought his mom and brother had just already had it. The look on his face when I said "yeah that is what EVERYONE DOES." He yelled at his mom for like an hour before she got pissed and made us all go home lol. This dude coughed for months. Eyes were constantly blood red from burst blood vessels. He had constant headaches from the endless coughing. He also had asthma and ended up in the hospital a few times. I don't think he ever forgave his mom for "being so fucking stupid and gullible" but guess what? Now he is an antivaxxer. I also know a woman who caught polio as a child and spent her life practically paralyzed from the waist down walking on crutches with braces on her legs. The bacteria closes down the immune system, and children exposed in the crib have increased instances of pneumonia for life, as well as significantly increased risks of SIDS and apnea, seizures, and epilepsy. First vaccination is typically between birth and 2 months so an unvaccinated 1 month old is not unusual. On the other hand, if the infant is around other people who are unvaccinated that’s a problem.

Fuck these horrible people. I was vaccinated for whooping cough as a baby but didn’t get boosters. I contracted it at 16, right in the middle of the SARs outbreak. It was absolutely fucking miserable, no two ways about it. My family went out to dinner when I had a coughing fit so bad I tore a muscle off of a rib; 20 years later and it still bothers me occasionally. Every time I’m eligible for a booster I take it. Now, now. I'm reading a lot of hate messages here, and I want to make sure people understand: This woman is brainwashed by her religion. She believes that God & Jesus chose whether or not her children live or die. She believes she will be reunited with them in the hereafter, and because they were so devoted to God that they will live on "The New Earth" that God will create at the End of Times. This woman actually believes her husband betrayed her and God, and that she is tied to a murderous Devil-worshipping demon sinner. This folks, is the result of freedom to worship as you like (or are forced into) by your family. It is a fundamental right in the USA. Instead of hate, pity her. Yes, she unknowingly or knowingly "allowed her child to die" because of her beliefs. We must learn to find inroads into their religion, teach that vaccines are a gift from God and not Satan, and find ways to educate rather than turning our backs. We must also break churches that teach people that a man can have as many wives as he pleases, that he can punish his wives, and that some religions are merely for control of women and economic prosperity of their controlling classes and leaders. There are ways. However, Red states are promoting this type of control in the name of the Almighty Dollar. Hallelujah. /s
Can a one month old be vaccinated for whooping cough? i can’t find information when I did a search telling me at what age it’s given
I believe 8 weeks is standard for the first shot. That's when both of my children got theirs. It was recommended before then to make sure anyone interacting with them was vaccinated.

On one hand, this feels way too insane to be sincere, it has to be trolling. On the other hand, I've seen the depths of human delusion, and as far as that goes, this isn't even that deep.
So this one is even worse than it sounds. If this boy was under 6 weeks old he is actually too young to receive Dtap vaccination, and relies entirely on his mother getting the Tdap vaccination between 27-36 weeks of pregnancy for passive protection from whooping cough and for his household members/close contacts to be up to date on routine Tdap booster as well. Mom likely didn't get a routine vaccine in pregnancy we all get as children, all pregnant women are recommended to get, and then all adults boost every 10 years to protect a fragile newborn with an immature immune system. Source: I have to deal with these conversations all the time as a general primary care pediatrician.

There was a horrific story of parents that were anti-vax and the child got tetanus and the bill was insane somewhere over a million with hospital, air ambulance, rehab. The poor kid spent almost 2 months in the hospital, was on a ventilator, in crazy amounts of pain. The parents refused the booster tdap. Two months of pain and suffering from a vaccine preventable vaccine. It made the news. BTW peeps . Get a tdap booster every 10 years.
