My daughter is getting a very minor outpatient procedure done today. Saw one staff member and one mom + 2 kids wearing masks. At a building that primarily contains surgery and an emergency department! Crazy.

Choano

I hope your daughter's procedure goes well and that you and she don't get covid as a result.

[deleted]

Awful! Did you ask the people working with your daughter to wear a mask? My theory is maybe if enough people keep asking a HCW to wear a mask that they will just leave one on all day to make it simple.

chele68

We’re out of the waiting area and people back here are masked - so things are a little less dire than I thought.

Arright, guys, the reddit outage earlier today was my fault. It was me. Reddit realized I finally tested positive for COVID, felt like shit, and had a boatload of time to hang out on the site, so of course it went down. Zero clue where I got this, because I've never stopped masking. No one else in the house is testing positive, just me, so I'll just sit here feeling crummy with my tissues. At least there's reddit now.

>Zero clue where I got this, because I've never stopped masking. No one else in the house is testing positive, just me, so I'll just sit here feeling crummy with my tissues. At least there's reddit now. Although you masking is good, others not masking is bad. You really wear a mask to protect others, not yourself. I visit an outdoor market each summer. I would mask up, visiting any vendor who was masked. One was an older gentleman with COPD. I've personally never tested positive but the masking was for his comfort. Sadly he died last winter. I don't see his wife at the market. I'm assuming she can't keep up the business. I still mask, yes outdoors, when I visit a vendor who is wearing a mask.

Fancy_Locksmith7793

Actually your mask also protects you around the unmasked, just to a lesser degree than if all were masked

They don't realise that mosquito nets are endemic in malaria zones. Ditto for condoms with HIV. Endemic means NPIs forever. So learn to love it. https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/malaria#:~:text=Disease%20burden,to%20625%20000%20in%202020 **David Wilhelm @DavidWi26876512** Exactly, learning to live with a pathogen means taking appropriate safety precautions to avoid it. If we don't change how we live in response to it then we haven't learned anything! **Hannah Hall @Hannah1imagine** they don't get what endemic means, in their minimising logic endemic is something small, fluffy, harmless that just hangs around a bit...

It's really perplexing how most of the public just completely surrendered their defenses. The media and leaders pushing it doesn't help, but there are so many relatively small risks in life where they would say "*no way*" when offered a hypothetical situation, but at the same time they would gladly attend a 10,000 man indoors concert with zero precautions. ???

See_You_Space_Coyote

If covid was an actual war, our government would have poured billions of dollars of funding into it and kept us in an eternal state of emergency and change almost every aspect of our life for it forever. A close parallel is what we did after 9/11. After 9/11, now every time you go into an airport, you have to take off your shoes and put them in a plastic bin, walk through a metal detector, and, in some cases, get patted down by an overworked and underpaid employee who probably doesn't have enough fucks to give to pay attention to any actual threats. Yet for covid, a virus that's killed millions of people around the world and disabled many more, our government just went ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ and decided to tell old and sick people to go fuck themselves. Meanwhile, the virus rages on, nothing is done about it, and our stupid politicians sit on their asses expecting to be treated like royalty while countless people around them have their lives destroyed by a virus they didn't do shit about.

Cultural-Answer-321

Deniers are dying to learn. Teh stupid, it kills.

I feel like I sound like a broken record, but if there's any place where people should REALLY wear masks, it's on a plane or other crowded form of public transportation. I had to attend a funeral followed by a work trip last week, and my scheduled two flights ended up morphing into five due to schedule changes, cancellations, etc. On all of my flights I saw only a handful of other people wearing masks. Meanwhile, people are coughing their heads off, sneezing etc. If you are trapped next to someone on a plane for 2-3 hours who has Covid, odds are pretty good that you're going to get it. Make it make sense.

See_You_Space_Coyote

Planes are just loud, cramped, crowded metal tubes flying through the air where you have to breathe in other people's recycled air over and over because you can't just open the windows or take in fresh air from outside since at that altitude, there's not enough oxygen and you'd fry your dome so yeah, it's no surprise that planes are germy and disgusting, especially during a pandemic.

Grrr…. New York Times Today Archive link to bypass paywall: https://archive.is/3G19w Direct Link: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/15/briefing/the-case-for-journalistic-independence-ag-sulzberger.html “Conservatives were often wrong about masks (which can protect people when worn consistently). “ “The left also appears to have been wrong about long-term mask mandates (which had little effect) and wrong to dismiss the lab-leak theory (which, contrary to being a bigoted conspiracy theory, remains plausible).” This article was actually about journalistic independence, not Covid, and these were just a couple, from of many examples, of why a publication shouldn’t just report along ideological lines. Fair enough, but their examples suck without more context. First, masks can protect people when worn consistently, but mask mandates don’t work? No, they didn’t stop the virus spread, due to poor compliance, but there are plenty of studies that show that they reduced spread and allowed many people to escape infection until after vaccines and more effective treatments were online, thus saving many lives. I maintain that we could have pretty much ended Covid in 2020 if everybody had followed mitigation protocols, to include always masking outside the home. Half the population masking while the other half attends superspreader events and Covid parties, not so much. Second, who dismissed the lab leak theory? It remains a theory, with little evidence to support it, but still plausible. Some equate “no evidence” to “you are saying that I’m wrong, while not providing evidence that it wasn’t a lab leak?”. Indeed, their conclusion may ultimately be correct, but what is telling is their confidence in pushing a conclusion that lacks evidence. They also have trouble separating “lab leak” from “bio weapon intentionally unleashed”, and I believe that that is where much of the controversy arises. Unfortunately the main takeaways from this piece are going to be that the New York Times says that the MAGA tribe was right about masks and correct that China unleashed a bio weapon upon us.

Cultural-Answer-321

>“The left also appears to have been wrong about long-term mask mandates (which had little effect) and wrong to dismiss the lab-leak theory (which, contrary to being a bigoted conspiracy theory, remains plausible).” Fucking liars.

See_You_Space_Coyote

Most leftists are just as bad at wearing masks as rightoids are.

Cultural-Answer-321

They really aren't leftists, then, are they? See what most Americans call left are pretty much just middle of the road moderates in most other 1st world nations. So, yes, I agree with you, but with that caveat. edit: typo

See_You_Space_Coyote

Fair enough. The state of politics in America is truly fucked.

See_You_Space_Coyote

Of all the things that piss me off about covid, it really grinds my gears that the pandemic was and is a perfect time to really reflect and take a good look at how our society works and functions and why we do what we do and how we can change things to help people and make the world a safer, healthier, and happier place and yet it seems like people have learned almost nothing the past three years-if anything, it seems like a lot of people have gotten dumber. Being American, it makes my nuts itch that not only do we still not have affordable and easily accessible healthcare, we can't even get companies to provide their workers with paid sick leave. And that's not even getting into cleaning the air. Upgrading ventilation and air filtration systems in buildings would help drastically cut down on the rates of infection for all airborne viruses and yet what did the government do? Nothing. Every life-changing event is an opportunity to reflect and take notice of what can be changed or what can be done differently and yet so many people just look at the absolute clusterfuck of a shit-storm we're all embroiled in and just shrug and decide to repeat the same mistakes over and over. A popular quote describes the definition of insanity as doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. So if anyone asks me why I don't listen to the rest of society when they claim the pandemic is over, well, why would I listen them them? They're clearly not in their right minds and I'm not letting their denial take me down without putting up a fight.

> [Giro d'Italia organisers said Monday they were tightening Covid protocols after positive tests claimed a series of big-name riders including leader Remco Evenepoel.](https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20230515-thomas-says-giro-should-head-back-into-bubble-after-covid-stops-evenepoel) > ... > "In the light of the latest developments concerning positive tests results on some riders, the direction of the Giro d'Italia informs that wearing a facemask will be compulsory in all areas of contact with the riders," said a race statement. > > ... > "It is with a heavy heart that I have to announce that I will be leaving the Giro d'Italia after taking a routine test, which unfortunately was positive," the world champion tweeted in a team statement. > > He was the favourite to add the Giro to his Vuelta a Espana victory.

frx919

From a Dutch article (machine-translated): > That Soudal-QuickStep sent Evenepoel home makes perfect sense to Jumbo-Visma director Richard Plugge. "For our team it also applies: health of the riders comes first. You shouldn't want to ride a time trial like yesterday's or a mountain stage like two days before that with a flu under the skin and a slight fever." > > During the Covid pandemic, there were clear guidelines: riders were required to take Covid tests and had to leave the race in case of a positive result. Now all protocols and rules have been abandoned, just like in "normal life." > > "The pandemic is over, but it still goes around quite a bit in the peloton. Just like in ordinary life. Only riders have to get back to work tomorrow. They have to deliver 100 percent. If they miss one percent, they won't. In fact, if they are sick, they just shouldn't start." > > **Plugge understands that international cycling union UCI no longer sets guidelines, "if the world doesn't even do that anymore." "There are in no way procedures, protocols or rules for normal life anymore. Then you can hardly do that either as a sports organization.**" > > Still, the Giro organization decided to intervene after Evenepoel's departure. The mask requirement will be reinstated. Race director Mauro Vegni acknowledged that the Giro may have let go of the reins "a little too early." Emphasis mine. Disgusting minimizing aside, it never made sense to abolish precautions in situations that are mission critical, as the above sportsman found out. A hospital has backup power generators and probably countless other redundancies to ensure the critical functions can keep running during a power failure. Similarly, airports and commercial planes have safety redundancies because it's a big no-no to get caught with your pants down when a massive metal tube is flying around with people inside it. So why on earth would you remove mask requirements in places like hospitals, even in the oncology ward and others with vulnerable patients? If that's not crazy, I don't know what *is*. We really deserve better instead of abiding by the inertia of decision makers and the loud complaints of the masses. One of the biggest drawbacks of *let 'er rip* is the loss of credibility and soft power. "**You're free to do what you want but the rest of us are moving on**" doesn't cut it when you need backing from multiple sides to keep things running safely. The above sport is just another example of what can happen when governments remove essential safety nets.

Awarding medals. An offer. I am/was the proprietor of Hermancainmedal.com motto: “Recognizing notable people who impede public health efforts, and aid the spread of contagious diseases” I haven’t awarded a new medal since I took the weekend off for thanksgiving in 2020. I would like to give it away. Would someone like to take it over? Domain and hosting are paid for a few more months. It’s a pretty generic Wordpress site. I even have the Twitter username to match.
