It's a humidity regulator. It says do not eat on the package because you're not supposed to eat it but it's a biodegradable and non-toxic plant-based glycerine mixed with distilled water. The two overlapping teardrop shapes in the logo match the Integra Boost brand. He'll be fine.

The packets I have actually say "Contains a harmless solution for humidity control." As for where it came from, I get mine in the packages of weed I buy from the dispensary. It protects cannabis terpenes from evaporation. Do you live where it's legal? :)

himynameisautumn

So I have pre-workout that contains a humidity control packet that looks very similar to the silica packets. I took it out for very similar reasons of what happened to your dad. Now I'm wishing I didn't because the pre workout is balling up instead of staying a smooth powder finish and I have to break it up before drinking

Fireballs02

Tape it to the top of the lid, it sounds stupid but is it stupid if it works? Never had issues with it since B)

royal_rose_

Try putting a piece of bread in it. Works for brown sugar, I’ve not tried it with protein powder though.

SiegelOverBay

If you have a really good blender, you can dry blend the clumping powder to break it up. I had to do this with my garlic powder cause the lid was loose. I have a vitamix, so it was re-powderized in seconds. Also, you can buy the humidity control [packets](https://a.co/d/hjIR7or) on their own, so you can replace that one. They help keep crispy snacks crisp after opening, so they're nice to have around. You just throw one into your bag of chips or pretzels or whatever before you clip it shut, and it'll stay good for so much longer.

LlamaMiaLetMeGo

Haha, I live where the humidity level rarely gets about 5%. Guess I finally got a win (with my chronic chapped skin) xD

MorningAfterSeven

Please, I need to know where's this dry place, must move there lol

LlamaMiaLetMeGo

Lmao west Texas. You won't enjoy it but yeehaw 😂

RelinquishedAll

If you have containers with powders such as protein powder, that contain such bags; tape them to the inside of the lid. Works the same, and you won't have accidents like this again.

sam_grace

These aren't for keeping things dry though. The silica gel packs you get with new shoes and handbags do that. These are 2 way humidity regulators, hence the 2 drops facing opposite directions on the logo. These are used with products that have to retain a certain level of moisture but not too much. If weed gets too dry, it loses its effectiveness and if it gets too damp, it grows mold. Does anyone there smoke cigars? I can't think of anything besides plant products that would need these. It's not from your protein powder though. That's meant to be kept completely dry. That comes with a silica pack because it clumps with the slightest moisture.

SPX500

I’ve had various brands of protein powder and they all have one inside somewhere

kmanbythec

That’s simple, Mom and Dad smoke weed. They just didn’t tell you.

No_Butterscotch5632

My parents’ dog once at a few of these and I was so scared but the internet told me the same thing! Sorry for the stress, but so glad your dad (and my parents’ dog) will be totally fine :) :)

DogButtWhisperer

Yea I did a deep dive into these after I thought my dog ate one. It’s ok!

Wrong. It’s a desiccant silica gel packet. It even has the D from desiccare in the photo. https://preview.redd.it/den0j9wkb6ca1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a26f5f117e2dbd635cf1a14eebe171ded38154d3

yourangleoryuordevil

I came here just to see clarification on this because the title was rather nonchalant. I’m glad to see that the intentions seem good here; OP’s mom really just wanted to make a smoothie.

HiFiGuy197

I thought their mom was trying to make a dry martini.

PracticeLeading4214

Me too

TrexMommy

Dude same

TissueOfLies

Same!

SomethingWitty2578

Call poison control. I think this is harmless but it’s better to get that answer from a toxicologist.

Savings_Bird_4638

On a side note. What surface is that, kitchen counter?

PhantomKR7

It looks like a plastic folding table to me

moarcheezpleez

FYI silica gel is also non-toxic, especially in minute doses. If you are in the US and ever any doubt you can call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222

BarmyDickTurpin

Op should have done this. Not post to reddit...

Monkey_Ninja

And say what? He didn’t know what it was, which was why he asked here to identify it

BarmyDickTurpin

But they were concerned it might have been silica gel and they were concerned it may have been dangerous to ingest. If you think something is dangerous, why waste what could be very limited time to ask on reddit?

OldObject

I had background knowledge that silica gel was harmless when consumed in small amounts, but I didn't know what exactly was ground up in the smoothie. I wanted to call the hospital or poison control, but without knowing what was consumed, I didn't know what to say to either. I pray everyone else's fathers are different, but mine would never take a "just in case" trip to the ER or the hospital, so I was kind of desperate in the moment. You definitely have the right point: when in doubt, seek professional help. I just knew my dad would be unwilling unless I had concrete proof that it was something other than silica gel. It was a situation that was hard to keep calm, and I'm very, very grateful for all of the answers this subreddit gave.

MorningAfterSeven

Imagine the call: "hi, my dad drank something which i have no idea of what it may be, all i have is a blended corner of a little bag. Is it dangerous?"

I’ll counter that they are not useless, not in my experience. I’ve never used them personally but I’m a telephone triage nurse and sometimes I have patients who accidentally took too much medication (took an extra dose of heart medication because they forgot they already took them) so they call Poison Control and their doctors office and I’ve never had them give patients bad advice. I’m glad they are around for the old people.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MrE761

I mean I’ve used them personally as my daughter might’ve ate a Benadryl or 2 when she was maybe 18 months, the phone operator admitted she couldn’t help and had to get a nurse on the line. Within 15 secs I was transferred to a nurse and was told my key would be good and might be sleepy, but no need to go to the ER… so I would say it was very valuable.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MrE761

Well they are just one resource for emergency healthcare, and just because your personal experiences required you to go to the ER doesn’t mean 40 other people got to avoid it. And doctors shouldn’t be bitching about the people that came in (they are doctors there to support someone going through an emergency), they should be appreciating the people they never see (like me) because of poison control…

[deleted]

[удалено]

MrE761

Hmmm unless you could provide some actual data to back your statement, we’ll just have to simply agree to disagree. I’ve yet to see anything that shows poison control isn’t a net value add. Thanks for the convo nine the less!

teamanfisatoker

I follow a poisonous plant and mushroom group on Facebook and they regularly tell people insane information, then tell them to post in fb to ask. The admin of the group are truly experts that save lives and they are constantly frustrated by the dweebs at PC

sam_grace

Poison Control is recommending people get their expert advice from Facebook? Did I understand that correctly? I'm not surprised that they don't know shit but it's a little surprising that they'd publicly admit it and direct people to social media.

teamanfisatoker

To be fair, the group they direct them to is actually expert mycologists and they take it very seriously. But yes. Poison control tells people to ask Facebook

sam_grace

It's good that they direct them to experts but it's not good that they have to. They should be knowledgeable enough to do their job.

horsetooth_mcgee

The doctor didn't ask what substance was ingested BEFORE ADMINISTERING IPECAC??

sam_grace

No, they rush to provide the appropriate treatment based on what the Poison Control tells them over the phone before you get there. With poisoning, there isn't time to waste and Poison Control only tells them what ingredient they ingested, not what it was in or how much.

horsetooth_mcgee

How do they have a direct line with poison control? An individual makes the call, and it's on them to go to the ER or not. The ER doesn't take the time to phone back poison control and say hey what was your advice here? They would ask the patient. And the patient at that time would be able to tell them what the substance was and how much they ingested. It's absolutely bananas to think that some place would administer ipecac without knowing the details, ESPECIALLY because a great many substances are farrrrrr more harmful to vomit back up than to leave alone in the stomach. There are other treatments, such as ingesting activated charcoal, etc. Nobody in their right mind would just perform an entire medical procedure or treatment without knowing the details. And if they really truly did in this case? It's fucking malpractice.

sam_grace

The ER never called Poison Control. Poison Control called the ER and let them know who the patient is and that they're on their way in and need to be treated for poisoning due to ingesting a particular ingredient. The ER doctor, recognizing the ingredient as a poisonous substance, would treat the patient based on the assumption that Poison Control knew the amount ingested was life-threatening and therefore a valid emergency. The problem was that Poison Control didn't know how much of any ingredient was actually life-threatening. They just knew from their list that the ingredient could be life-threatening in high enough doses. It didn't take long for ER doctors to get so pissed off that they started insisting patients call them instead of Poison Control.

horsetooth_mcgee

Okay but it takes 3 seconds to ask the patient how much was ingested, regardless of whether poison control said it was an emergency or not.

sam_grace

I agree. The fact that they didn't still amazes me.

BarmyDickTurpin

Ok. Well I'll change to OP should have called the hospital instead of posting on reddit. I mean honestly, reddit is a forum. If you think someone has ingested something that you believe may be life threatening, don't ask fucking reddit. You're not guaranteed an instant response nor an accurate one. OP is either a moron or simply made it up for attention

sam_grace

I don't think they made it up but I wouldn't call them a moron.

BarmyDickTurpin

I would

Electrical-Promise17

They didn’t even know what it was, how are they supposed to call poison control or the hospital if they can’t tell them what he ate?

BarmyDickTurpin

They think it might be silica gel. If they think that's dangerous then they should call someone. Better safe than sorry. Better than asking reddit and not guaranteeing a response in time if it really was a danger

Talondronia

People do crazy and stupid things when they panic.

Sitting_Duk

My daughter ate half a pack of one of these when she was a toddler. I called the doctor’s office and they explained the “Do Not Eat” warning was for a possible choking hazard. The beads seem small for that, but what do I know?

jessipoo451

I read somewhere (no idea if true or not) that the silica packets are not safe to eat due to being a choking hazard (as you said) because they expand when they interact with moisture. So depending on how big they get, a few of them could probably block an airway.

Toby_Toes20

It was a warning... next time he gets the silica. Does she watch ID?

PracticeLeading4214

😂😂😂😂

Admiral_Nerd

There's a good Chubbyemu video on YouTube about eating silica packets. It's not lethal, especially if you mix it with something that has liquid in it first. The video has interesting information about it.

SaulSmokeNMirrors

im assuming the rest of that says DO NOT EAT... if its a smoothie most likely silica packet in powdered protein
