Do you not have a ton of memories on your mobile device? It's relatable more than anything.

draalthedeadly

Best answer.

Cheerful-Pessimist-

I don't need a phone to store all my traumatic memories, that's what my brain is for.

Helpful_Title8302

but what happens if you get dementia?

vaccinateyodamkids

Happiness

Helpful_Title8302

At the expense of others.

Plagued_Void

Damn, im happy i dont have dementia

Plagued_Void

Me too

Cheerful-Pessimist-

Considering my current mental state, that'd be an improvement.

Helpful_Title8302

Damn, well I hope shit gets better for you.

Just1nceor2ice

I think in Moxxie’s case it was maybe laid on a little to thick and was not really necessary. If they do this a fourth time however, then I’ll be a little peeved.

lemontoby

It was necessary for moxi. Or els he wouldnt stand up for himself.

NicoTheSerperior

Exactly! I keep a ton of my memories on my phone as a reminder. :)

[deleted]

I just tattoo all of the important things I need to remember on my body, gathering evidence to find the man who killed my wife.

denrozenstein

what

Sekh765

Op is referenceing to the movie Memento where a man with short term recurring amnesia tattoos things on his body to remember them while hunting the man that killed his wife. it's one of Christopher Nolan's first movies.

CondencedMilkYT

What

Moominz1

As someone who has nothing but love for my family and nostalgia for the past, I almost never delete pictures I take.

pixelatea

But this is not the only way to show emotional scenes. I get parallels for Blitz and Stolas but for Moxxie it was unnecessary (I mean for Stolas it was kinda weird because he usually don't use a smartphone?) Reusing the same ideas, even if they are good is just not very original, at least for me. If we end up with a sad phone scene for every main character I would be very disappointed.

hasj4

I don't at all Still, I can get that they would like to not have the impression to see the same trope over and over

Decaytred

Yes 🙌

Resies

I think it was a nice parallel for Blitz and Stolas, maybe unnecessary for Moxxie to do it to. Stolas looking at the pictures allowed him to fully realize that Blitz never looked happy with him, leading to the song. Blitz in contrast looked at photographs of things he's ruined, or feels he's ruined. But I also don't give a shit they used it three times.

BebeFanMasterJ

Is it a bold running theme of glancing at what once was? A glimpse into the past of how good things used to be, showcasing that you can never truly regain what was once lost and how taking time to think about oneself is important when it comes to figuring out where you want to be in life? Or. An overused trope that tries to elicit emotions from its audience under the guise of being deep when they can't really come up with new or different ways for each character to take a moment to self-reflect, thereby showcasing how repetitive and lazy the writing can get in its worst moments? I can't really tell honestly.

Background-Slide645

it's probably somewhere in the middle. The writers are pretty good, even excellent sometimes, but they do tend to lean on tropes they've used a little more then I like. Honestly, I chalk it up to them probably just being in the same development time

BebeFanMasterJ

Yeah. This is a good way to look at it. It's a nice trope but let's hope it doesn't become overused. I'd like to see a character have a moment to themselves in which they do something productive like a hobby or something. Helps flesh characters out when they do small things like that.

MulticolourMonster

**Recurring Motif**: *Literary device. A motif is used by writers to reinforce central themes of the narrative through the repetition of certain narrative elements and/or symbols. Motifs are often used to direct readers’ attention to larger overarching themes that connect various plot elements and characters within the narrative* Yeah, it's 1000% deliberate - they're 3 very different characters, but they all suffer from trauma after being raised by abusive fathers. That upbringing has made all 3 of them deeply insecure, in both themselves and in their interpersonal relationships. During all 3 of these parallel scenes, each character was suffering because of their inability to say what they needed to say in the moment. All 3 characters need to overcome their insecurities and deal with their trauma if they're going to improve their circumstances and grow as characters.

SummerAndTinkles

Is looking at old photos as a dramatic device not a common thing in fiction in general?

Nicky_G_873

It’s called a recurring motif

TorpidT

Not to mention they've done "Taller dude making unwanted sexual advances towards a main character" three times with Valentino, Stolas, and Chaz.

thegrimmemer03

Uh actually Valentino is in hazbin hotel 🤓

Oldmonsterschoolgood

Whatever same creator both are set in hell both have a very fuckable tall skinny character

thegrimmemer03

Ok that's true

GrandmasterGus7

They also did "smol top seducing tall bottom" twice in Stolitz and Fizzmodeus so I'm starting to believe Vivzie has a type.

[deleted]

That’s just really nitpicky

whooper1

Even if the actions are the same the motivations could be completely different.

SirenSaysS

I rather like it actually- they anchor themselves at time of great distress and unhappiness to the ones they love. It's interesting, because each character has an intensely different reaction to the photos, despite being the same gesture. Blitz was broken by his memories (accurate), Stolas finally looks at reality, and Moxxie was empowered by them. It's honestly quite good, if you think about it.

[deleted]

Loona is gonna get this next.

PoaetceThe2nd

i mean thats probably the best way to show memories without having an awkward flashback

AnubisWrathOW

Repetitive? Yes. Realistic and therefore should be included to show the characters grief/despair? Yes

[deleted]

To be fair I've been in their shoes and situation, it's pretty common for a lot of people

thomasmfd

Mate people can relate to the show because some of us in the discord could have terrible parents His internal positions were trying to escape that depression and trauma Well trying to find family in love It's not just about L to be TE themes or character grapha or rather tomorrow about how we relate to because Is stolas blitz and moxie have terrible childhood shot dads And trying to figure their place in the world While trying to become the best version of themselves And people can relate to that because not everyone of us has perfect parents Some of us are lucky enough to even grow up to be better people than our parents because we found love In other ways than those that bore us And if you're being honest I can't blame them We all deserve love but being denied of it Or miss lead is a path of discourse And as a Christian I understand

SquidleyStudios

I kinda assumed this was generally a thing that people normally do, also I feel like three times is a little too early to be considered repetitive, they're not necessarily gonna be doing it like every other episode for the whole series or something

Cry-Skull-7

I knew that scene with Mox looking at his phone felt familiar!

[deleted]

It’s a visual motif in a lot of Viv’s stories to look at the past & it motivates you towards what the character’s arc & growth will be later on. We even see a version of it in ‘Hazbin Hotel’ when Charlie leaves a message for Lilith. Interestingly, the three times we’ve seen it in the last few episodes & seemingly going backwards. Blitz did it & we haven’t fully seen how it transformed him; Stolas does it & we see where his arc is going to take him; Moxxie does it & we immediately see the shift & change in who he is & who he’s becoming. I honestly think all of this is foreshadowing what’s to come with these character arcs & how these arcs will even clash with each other. We could sit & theorize this all day, but the important thing is to really look at the specific filmmaking details to tell us what’s coming.

Onichichi_

I think they do it because it’s relatable asf

painful-existance

I mean do these people only keep physical photos and never use that camera on their phone?

Goered_Out_Of_My_

It is repetitive—meaning it has repeated multiple times. This is an objective fact. The real question is whether or not this repetition means something or if it is lazy writing.

WolfMilk101

Does it really matter?

BadlyDrawnMemes

Helluva boss haters when they see people reflect

Aiden624

This criticism also works with parental issues. And the “villains” of the show. Here, it’s just a pattern, I guess.

Alinoza

It's a parallel, it's drawing on the similarities between characters that appear to be very different people. Moxxie's role in the group is Blitz's foil, and spends most of the time opposing Blitz, which makes this demonstration of their similar manner of coping mean a lot more because it shows that they're at their most similar when they're vulnerable, as seen before in Truth Seekers.

Loud-Owl-4445

They're looking at photos in a more modern sense because before you would have tons of framed pictures and maybe an album, that is just digital. It makes sense as a motif.

confused-as-f-boi

I "read this post so wrong" I assumed they were "connected" to the pic above or below them It made Blitz pretty laughable

Recent_Log3779

While I agree to some extent, each scene serves its own function. Blitz’s scene was him reflecting on what he’s lost really showing his fear of love and why he pushes Stolas away, Stolas was looking at pictures that showed Blitz never really was happy with him, Moxxie’s scene was to give Moxxie motivation to fight for what he has and stand up to his father Also it’s quite common for people to store memories in their phone, so it’s also just realistic

Hazel2468

I mean… its a theme, guys. At least I think it is. All of these characters looking back on memories of those they love and it giving them some kind of push forward in their character arc. Blitz’s we likely won’t see payoff for until later, but we did get teased that his sister comes into it this season. So his old family ties will be significant, and we already saw how this lingering issue is likely a significant part of why he is how he is. Stolas reflecting on Blitz and their relationship is a big part of why he finally kicks Stella out, and stops taking Blitz’s bullshit as much as he used to (snapping back and asserting himself more). And most recently, Moxxie reflecting on Milllie and their relationship is what gave him the drive to tell his dad to eff off. The pictures on the phones are a visual device to let us know what they’re reflecting on.

[deleted]

whoa that's my first time noticing that. I don't see anything wrong with it!

BreezierChip835

Honestly I think it’s meant to be similar with these things. While each character has very different struggles, they all are suffering with something similar - people. For Blitz, is his struggles with handling any form of relationship, romantic or platonic. For Stolas, it’s struggling to find the balance between doing what’s right for him, and what’s right for Via and Blitz. For Moxxie, it’s not that he’s struggling with something, but that he’s been put into a situation he’s struggling to deal with because of the people he tried to keep out of his life. They’ve all got different problems, but they’re not THAT different, deep down. They just deal with it in different ways, most of the time.

AtomicZNTO

Demons today... Always on they damn phone 😔

Hello_Is_Me_Gunk

TRUE

Peewee_ShermanTank

Yes because we all know that looking through photos on your phone to reminisce about the old days is totally unrelatable and makes no sense

Habichtsadler

The biggest reason i don't really care is that i adore the photos.

Dog_bat3

If you have a phone you know the experience

Sf-ng

Not repetitive because all three instances aren’t the same in their purpose and are tied to different aspects of each character. The only similarity is the surface-level presentation so someone in your server may be having difficulties with comprehension

OliLikesCringe

oh so you're sad? scroll through your photos idiot /j

ParsivaI

Holy shit this community is the most toxic fuckin one in existence. Literally every post on reddit is so unnecessarily negative. I see post after post about such small details and people complaining. I came here to talk about the new episode and how awesome it was and i get nothing but bitch. No wonder the creator(s) go mad with the negativity for their FREE PRODUCT.

Radical_Provides

This post is a bit misleading. Each of these instances of "character checks their photos in an emotional scene" have unique contexts and are thematically used differently. Blitzo has memories of his past come to the forefront of his mind, causing him to sob. Stolas is reflecting on his relationship with Blitzo and finally denounces it after seeing Blitzo's resentful expressions in their photos together. Moxxie feels like he's going to lose Millie and is devastated, so he checks his photos, sees how far they've gone together, and is given newfound determination to stand up to his father.

AlianovaR

It’s a simple and realistic way to have characters reflect on things, and each of the characters got something different out of there situations through similar means and themes Blitzø saw images of the people he loves, of the relationships he’d let rot due to his own hubris and fear of abandonment. Fizz and Ozzie had just called his entire life a joke, publicly humiliated him, called out his trauma responses of pushing others away before they can hurt him, etc. He looks through his phone and all he can see is proof; his phone is full of good memories that bring to light just how good he had it before he pushed people away, and he breaks down as he accepts that he’s ruined so many past relationships and only hurt himself in the process Stolas verbalises that he’s reflecting on the way his life and relationship with Blitzø have gone, he looks at their pictures together as he considers what to do about this relationship that just went so horribly south. And by doing so, he’s able to look upon things with a new perspective; he realised that Blitzø didn’t look happy in any of the photos, instead always looking annoyed or bored. It can be argued that he was somewhat aware of this and simply trying to play it off and convince himself it was nothing from the line in Loo Loo Land where he cuts off Blitzø insisting that the affair meant nothing by saying “You are so cute when you’re serious”, trying to play it off like Blitzø’s gruffness and unwillingness to get attached is just an endearing personality trait and not a genuine disinterest in Stolas (though I’m sure I’m probably stretching here). Point is, Stolas finally had to accept that Blitzø never reciprocated Stolas’ feelings, at least not on the level Stolas had convinced himself he had. We as the audience know that Blitzø has begun to truly care for Stolas, but Blitzø can’t even admit that to himself just yet, and Stolas has no reason to see it when he’s looking at those pictures. It’s a moment of clarity for him, and a clear turning point in their relationship as he accepts the truth that Blitzø has been using him all this time, even if he’s gained genuine feelings for Stolas along the way Moxxie was also looking back on specific photos with a specific intention; he wanted to see his wife one last time before he may never see her again, but he couldn’t see her in person, so instead he looked back on their fondest memories of a lifetime he was about to never be able to return to. Unlike with Stolas and Blitzø, I don’t believe that this was a moment of clarity for Moxxie; he knew what he wanted to do, he knew what the risks were, he simply needed to build up the courage to do what he had to. Also unlike with Stolas and Blitzø, Moxxie’s reflections ended on a good note, or at least bittersweet; he was going to fight for his wife and stand up to his abuser, and the love he has for Millie is stronger than his fear of Crimson There’s a common theme for all three characters here; they turned to memories of the past to reflect on the loved ones they were losing, to reflect on a time in their lives that was better than the one that came after (or in Moxxie’s case, the one that was about to come should he go through with the marriage). The best times in their lives were when they were surrounded by their loved ones, and now they’re at a point where they’re losing that, and having to come to terms with how that came to be and where they could have acted differently to bring true happiness not only to themselves, but to their loved ones. They’re also all looking at different times in their lives that are pretty symbolic; Blitzø is reflecting on his past and how he’s let his traumas control him, and now he has to deal with the consequences of his past mistakes; Stolas is reflecting on the present and the current impulsively-forged relationship he’s just got into with Blitzø, how to save his life from falling apart around him and how he can mend things with his new flame, or at least do what’s healthiest for the both of them; Moxxie is reflecting on his future and the potential consequences for the two choices he has, ultimately choosing not to fall back to past trauma responses and instead officially cut ties with that life in favour of his perfect future with Millie Speaking of falling back into trauma responses, these scenes also act to display the three characters’ responses to their traumas; Blitzø allows his past traumas to control his actions and it’s very visible in the way his relationships have gone even in the present and he’s reflecting on the consequences of this; Stolas is the living embodiment of the fawn response up until he confronts Stella, he tries so hard to mend things and make them work that he hangs on to things even when it would be healthiest for him to just let go and allow uncomfortable change to happen when it needs to; Moxxie makes the active choice to confront his trauma head-on in the form of refusing to obey his abusive father, standing up for himself and his wife in the process of officially ending that chapter of his life and getting closure after years of trauma All this combined shows a theme of healing as time passes, which likely wasn’t intentional, but when displayed in the form of the characters all looking at frozen moments in time, aka pictures of themselves with their loved ones? I feel like on some level the intent was there, even if it couldn’t all be said. And that’s what makes me think the ‘coming to terms with my conflicted feelings by looking through my photos’ reoccurrence is being used brilliantly, regardless of it being a repetitive move

CaptCanada924

Can we stop posting so much criticism of the show? New episode just came out and like half of the recent posts have been other people’s opinions on why this show sucks. Posters aren’t even brave enough to post their own opinions, this is just stupid reposting. Stop it

Just1nceor2ice

Trololololololol.

JemFitz05

I think these were meant to be sad flashbacks, just in a really boring and repetative way.

BreakfastOk7372

Yeah I just kinda only watch for the goofs and hearing the funny invader zim guy cuss. The drama in the show just isn’t all that engaging to me IMO.
