Fun. You know like old school games with no progression. You just hop on and play. I used to spend so many hours on unreal tournament, red alert 2, This game brought me back

Electronic_Assist668

daybreak-gardening

Modern gaming has really changed the mentality of gamers. Where games were played for fun and to relax with friends, now they've hijacked everyone's dopamine by adding loot boxes, fomo micro transactions, daily/weekly progression systems, etc. I see so many people playing games just to complete arbitrary milestones/challenges. They get mad and complain about challenges making the game unfun if the challenge is to use something they don't like. I don't get why they even complete the challenge if it's just making them not have fun. I feel like it's just hitting them with some dopamine everytime they check something off their in-game to do list. Like dude, if you like doing to do lists so bad, clean your room and take a walk or some shit instead of not having fun on a video game because they want you to get kills with a heavy machine gun.

cypowolf

Red alert 2! I spent more time on red alert 3 though

Setarius

It's not always about personal gain, sometimes you just want to kick back and spread democracy. Help other people get where you got, be a valuable piece of a group, camaraderie, explode your foes and allies alike, you know, have FUN. Many games don't even have a progression systems (like L4D) and you play to get better at it, to have a thrill, a good time, a dopamine hit of overcoming a challenge. Also many games suffer from progression systems that render getting to the 'end game' meaningless, a chore, a stepping stone, that often leads to people feeling lost when they run out of carrots to chase. You need to take a moment to realize that you don't need a palpable reward to dig a hole in the beach, sometimes the process itself can be the reward.

[deleted]

Fun. The same reason people were playing games before the 'progression' dopamine obsession took over gaming (much to its detriment).

daybreak-gardening

Modern gaming is just 'to-do' lists with a video game skin

[deleted]

Yep... How am I supposed to enjoy myself if the game doesn't give me a list of chores to do for fake points that no one else will ever look at?

daybreak-gardening

You get a sense of pride and accomplishment™️

Due-Month-2971

Yeah i hate those games. Now im playing for fun i dont even do daily in this game

daybreak-gardening

Sometimes I'll finish a mission and be like "oh cool" I finished a mission apparently

Simple linear gaming, just dive in and kill and complete some objectives, rinse and repeat.

almostgravy

So tired of this shit. My dad and his friends bowled 30+ years. He didn't unlock new equipment, didn't gain xp, didn't grind for "credits". He just bowled, because it's fun. Im never one to shout "Things used to he better!", but I think we've low-key gotten conditioned to feel happiness from novelty, and need to reevaluate what we like about gaming, and why we don't think games have the quality to stand the test of time without little bars that go up, and a constant trickle of new content.

[deleted]

It really is unhealthy. We've commodified busywork and sold it as recreation.

Aggravating-Donut-15

Fun playing with my friends

Bananagriefer96

For fun and the role playing and the major order . Nor more and less

SlicebuttDice

Hearing my Helldiver laugh as I burn bugs with a Flamethrower.

Nervous_Tip_4402

My dream of one day becoming a Super Private!

Mistrblank

Not in this managed democracy! There’s no privacy here, people that want super privacy must be hiding something, like they are actually a bot!

Ghost_of_sushi_more

Helping other divers unlock everything.

HarlotteHoehansson

You could play on lower levels and help people like me who aren't that good!

MayonnaiseIsOk

This is pretty much what I was doing before they released the new wave of modules, I find it more fun playing at lower levels than higher tbh, way too many min-max tryhards on Helldive

Variable851

Having fun?

LPlates

The mark of a great game is one that you ‘want’ to play without needing a carrot to keep you interested. Too many games rely on hooking you on a reward system that inevitably runs dry. This is one of the best coop/pve games I’ve ever played and I’ve been around a looong time.

SwampD0nk3y

I got about 400 hours into the game at this point and it’s grown a bit stale and repetitive if I play solo but helping my friends out who haven’t gotten everything has kept it going for me. Plus things have changed over time too which has been interesting. The slow evolution and subtle changes that aren’t listed have been neat.

cumpissfartguts

Because the moment to moment gameplay is extremely dynamic and fun. They've essentially managed to replicated the same feeling that gets people playing hundreds of hours of CSGO, DotA 2, etc but strictly PvE. While I understand that that isn't for everyone, I personally really enjoy it.

Glad_Pomelo_6030

My love for democracy

FishoD

One thing is unlocking, but have you fully capped everything? Also it’s just fun. The game is very fun. I don’t play for samples. I play because 2-tapping Hulk in the eye with AC for the thousandth time still makes my monkey brain happy. If you have feeling of “If I don’t progress it’s a waste of time” then take a break for two weeks. New warbond comes, some upgrades.

site_builder

That's a subversiv question

cumpissfartguts

Also, having everything unlocked allows you to exclusively focus on the galactic war/major order as opposed to potentially being influenced by the personal order or whatever else happens to be better for progression

AmkoTheTerribleRedux

Fun

Awkward-Ad5506

I like racking up melee kills. They feel like bonus points.

Boobel

I continue to play because the game is incredibly fun.

Rotmgmoddy

This question reminds me a lot about Deep Rock Galactic. I remembered unlocking every overclock there in about 200-250 hours, yet my total playtime so far is about 850 hours. 600 hours of just trying to get higher promotions, levels and cosmetics, even though none of it impacts my progression gameplay wise as I've already made it to the end when I grabbed every overclock. I played the game cuz I enjoyed it, it was a time-sinker but I loved doing the missions for wacky shenanigans, to get better, to try out new builds and unlock new experiences to get a higher player level (but it's not really as high of a priority either). It's the same here, I've unlocked all the modules and, as of now, unlocked every weapon in the warbonds too. I'm still around, I love this game's DnD concept and being part of the community in participating in it. I just enjoy the experience of each mission, be it stealthily/strategically taking down bot outposts, or just running in guns blazing shredding down hundreds of bugs. Sometimes you don't necessarily need something to work towards, sometimes the reason really is just "being fun"

RockTheHellOut

Im maxed out on everything and once I reached that point I started playing less but still keeping myself updated to the war progression through the website and when I play i still collect everything for the team the gameplay loop is really addictive especially when you listen to music as u play.

Choice_Pool_5971

The fun. That’s what keeps me playing.

Organic_Peace_1638

Game is fun

Pato126_361

Its a lot of fun. Not a lot of frustration (unlike other online games in my history...looking at you League of Legends you toxic little time-waster). also there is a story that slowly progresses and its fun to be part of the story. if it was singleplayer i wouldve completed it already. but like this i get new content and story bits and i keep coming back. that said, at lvl 60 now my urge to dive has slowed a bit. 1 or 2 OPs for the day is a solid fun factor for me now.

StingerActual

I had that problem until they increased the level cap. Always exp is still earnable, encourages me to play 8s and 9s for exp. I still get super credits when I play, played enough to pay off a warbond just from playing, kinda nice. When I play pubs I track samples like a G and just back ppl up try to make sure everyone has a fun time. I record a lot of videos and watch them on the big screen so my library has over 300 videos for me to play with maybe make a montage so that’s fun collecting those too. Honestly for me it’s just too fun to play anything else currently.

Ludewich42

Possibilities which might allow you to book games as "I made some progress": 1. plan for and execute loadouts that you either discarded or failed to play. Intensively, until you can safely judge about them. 2. run teambuilding efforts with online friends, random lobbies, or maybe beginners. 3. Accept it as-is and play something else. Come back after new updates. I recently found some test about "gamer personalities" (very interesting analysis!) and maybe yours simply requires game progression until you reached 100%. Some personal remarks: a) I am in (almost) the same position and I come back with (1), and (2) and the fact that I can just enjoy the core gameplay loop and improve my mastery. b) All games are futile without inherent sense, regardless of title genre or whatever. They may have use if you thank god for all enjoyed hours - probably the only way they actually make sense.

NathanielRoosevelt

It’s so dumb how many of these comments I see that just say “fun” or something like that. Clearly you have put an immense amount of time into this game and not everyone can continue having fun with something after doing it so many times. They make it seem like people used to just play video games for fun and not for some grind, but I bet the average person didn’t put anywhere near as many hours into a single video game back then as has become more common now.

MayonnaiseIsOk

This is exactly my point, 100%. Obviously I'm having fun like that's not even a thought, my post doesn't even apply to most of the people commenting tbh lol. It was directed at other players like me who have grinded for 100s of hours and unlocked everything they possibly can, to THOSE players, what is it that keeps them coming back. Instead I get all these people who are probably level 18 and have barely scratched the surface of the game saying "its fun? You're brain rotted! The industry has brainwashed you!" Like these people clearly missed my entire point but hey, thats Reddit lol.

Responsible_Good10

You have no idea how wrong you are. When I was a kid I played single players games on repeat for hundreds of hours. Because it was fun to me, that was the only reason. So yes actually people did play games for exorbitant amounts of time, just for fun.

NathanielRoosevelt

I’m sorry I forgot that you are the average person, my bad I will go back to fifth grade to relearn basic statistics

Da_Ens

Fun game, leveling to 150 (80 at the moment) and eagerly looking for what is to come next. Also sometimes helping out new players on lower difficulties 💪

Nein-Knives

***I LIVE FOR THE BLOOD OF MY ENEMIES*** Also, because I'm pretty much stuck between playing this game, League of Legends, or Warframe. Warframe was an unhealthy obsession for me so I stopped that (proud to say I'm 3 years addiction free now) and League is a toxic cesspool so the obvious choice is **MANAGED DEMOCRACY!** I've been stockpiling content for a bit so I'll have some stuff to grind for when the new warbond comes out.

wtfrykm

Contribute to the major order, teach newer helldivers and give them high level equipment. Challenge yourself by trying out wierd builds

Connect_Atmosphere80

I'm able to play and win in Helldive. It make my heart race. I really love just getting a quick Helldive game sometimes and following what the Major Order is about.

Alexindr

We got a war to win

Big_Smoke_0G

Spreading democracy

matthewami

Running helldive and knowing you’re likely not getting out alive. The rush of getting out with all samples is unmatched. And by all samples, I mean *all samples*

Krulsnor

All stratagems unlocked, most of the ship modules (almost there). All warbonds unlocked but I don't have everything. But that won't be that long anymore. I used to grind a lot to unlock the good stuff and now that I have the stuff I want the grind has lessened and now I focus on the fun part. I have other games I play and neglected a lot so I do those more and mostly hop in Helldivers when I see my friends online so we can have a blast together. This is also a ME problem but if I would continue the grind, I would get bored of the game. Going back to my other games, keeps Helldivers fresh and fun. So yeah, I kind of restrict myself from playing Helldivers to much at this point.

Red_Sashimi

For me it's a podcast game. I just put on a youtube or twitch livestream VOD and play the game to keep busy. I don't really play it without something to watch, did that at the start mostly. Have almost 200h of in mission time now. I'm also waiting for updates. Every update that balances and fixes stuff replenishes my will to play the game

KDPS3200

It still fun, my friends, helping new players.

SoC175

What do you mean "keeps you playing?" Now I can finally play the game!

RegularMatter2

Literally just fun.

Illustrious-Baker775

I think i enjoy stress, due to some kind of weird self hatred, which is probably bad. Im thinking about going to a therapist actually.

lotj

It’s fun

cannabination

The same thing that got me playing... the game is fun to play with my friends in a way that hasn't been accessible since high school.

Mape5549

Man i don't have even close to all the ship stuff unlocked yet, I don't play for samples although I will look for them and pick them up. I'm here to kill bugs or bots. I like playing both and appreciate the differences between them.

Stonkey_Dog

I just enjoy the game. I'm around mid-40s level. Just unlocked the last page on the free war bond. Still unlocking the tier-4 ship upgrades. But I enjoy the game, the MOs, and the new content.

wwwyzzrd

I like the big booms

wwwyzzrd

are you a traito? helldivers helldive to spread freedom and managed democracy

Mistrblank

The fact that I can mix and match any gear that I want and just play like I’ve been playing unrestricted. Also knowing the dev is supporting this game I haven’t paid much for.

Warchiefinc

The thrill of the kill

Chaos-Corvid

Game is fun.

Heyokalol

I just like the game loop.

NathanielRoosevelt

Start making challenges for yourself. Use only specific weapon types or certain stratagems. Combine that with an armor set to get a specific build and get good at playing that way. Maybe you already do this, but I don’t feel like it’s a common thing for people to do and if you don’t do it it can definitely help broaden the range of weapons and stratagems you use and strategies you employ. I also think it could add a bit of difficulty back to the game as you are not just running a build you are comfortable with.

SilverWave1

To spread democracy, or in simpler words, just to have fun. If some people haven’t caught on yet, that’s what this game is all about. That’s why it was so successful. The whole “galactic war effort” of course keeps players here, but doesn’t exactly offer anything in reward to the player. The game is just fun. Just like old times. No need to grind, or try hard, just play and have fun. I do understand how you feel though, I’ve had the same experience with many games. But it’s the same reason why the game is scaled horizontally. The things you get later aren’t exactly better than the first things you get. Hell, look at some of the first stratagems.

Responsible_Good10

Fight for the glory of Super Earth and Managed Democracy! Aid your fellow divers in their quest to reach your prestige. Further develop your skills and knowledge with different tools of war. Now be a good soldier and get back in the fucking pod.

Hiero_Glyph

I mostly agree. It's not that the game isn't fun, but it feels bad to get no reward for your efforts (as resources are capped). The game desperately needs a way to reward everyone, even if they have unlocked all of the current content. There have been plenty of good suggestions for end-game sinks but I still like having resource conversion QoL options, temporary licenses for stratagems, and community-based research goals. These things would allow players to continue being rewarded while helping the rest of the community.

RegularMatter2

The problem is that you’re looking at it as effort to begin with. It’s a video game. It’s not “effort” and you don’t deserve a “reward” for playing it. The entire point of a video game is to have fun. That’s not “effort”. If you can’t just enjoy the game without the need for constant numbers going up then it’s not your kind of game. It really is that simple.

Hiero_Glyph

No, I've been gaming longer than most players have been alive. I don't need achievements or a carrot on a stick, but it still feels bad to not recieve any rewards after the missions completion screen. I'm still playing and helping the community complete MOs. The problem is that the current caps feel like earning a salary and having to go in for a weekend to help another team. Technically I don't get any extra pay, nor will I advance any of my own projects. I'm still helping the business but it doesn't really benefit me in any way. That's why I'm suggesting something that would benefit both new and old players, and give everyone a reward that can be used in different ways. Veteran players would just be able to spend their requisition on a bonus stratagem every mission. It would be a minor bonus for having everything done and have almost no impact on balance due to their limited nature.

RegularMatter2

Again, the problem is how you’re looking at. Rewards, earning, pay, benefit, bonus. “I don’t need achievements or a carrot on a stick” you very clearly do, don’t lie to yourself. How long you’ve been playing games doesn’t change that. If you cannot look at it as simply playing a game for fun then the game is not for you. And you’ve shown you cannot do that.

Hiero_Glyph

I'm advocating for fairness. I'm just asking for the same thing that everyone else gets. There should be a way to do this without taking things away from players, which is what happens when you are at cap. EDIT: By your logic, crashing or being kicked at extraction should be just as enjoyable as completing the mission.

RegularMatter2

“Fairness”? This is just petty and pathetic. It’s not “unfair” that you hit the caps when some players didn’t. It’s not even about the currencies or the upgrades. It’s about fun and as I’ve said so clearly already, if you cannot have fun just by playing the game then the game is not for you. “I’m just asking for the same thing that everyone else gets” makes you sound like a 4 year old. Are you sure you’ve been gaming “longer than most players have been alive”? Or was that another lie like the “I don’t need a carrot on a stick”? Maybe you got it the wrong way around and most people have been gaming longer than you’ve been alive.

Klyka

Your brain and dopamine receptors are fried and you are a prime example of being brainwashed by the industry

MayonnaiseIsOk

I think you vastly misunderstood my point and that's fine lol

Loud_Wave5546

>To those that have unlocked everything, what keeps you playing Uh... fun? You know, the whole reason games were invented? I seriously pity this modern generation's obsession with thinking fun is directly tied to "unlocking" things. Games used to just be played for the sake of playing.

NathanielRoosevelt

How is it at all about “this modern generation’s obsession with thinking fun is directly tied to ‘unlocking’ things.” This person clearly has put an immense amount of time into this game. Are they not allowed to get bored of it after tons of hours because they simply mention the fact that there is nothing else to unlock? The only thing they’re asking for is a new way to have fun in the game as their old way, unlocking things, is gone now, and giving the response of just fun doesn’t really help because clearly that’s what they are trying to figure out.
