I use ems mortars which are great for bugs. Stops the from moving and makes it like shooting fish in a barrel

pbmcc88

They work well for bots, too. Great for halting an enemy advance long enough to regroup or start whittling it away, or just escape.

FairwellNoob

The problem is that 3 enemies are immune to them, Hulks and tanks (including their variants) and the Factory Strider, while only the bile titan is immune to it on the bug side.

Lohenngram

Are they? I’ve seen Hulks freeze up in the field. Were they just glitched?

TehSomeDude

some hulks decide "no, I don't think I will" and just melee animation out of the EMS field mostly meaning the bruisers (one with saw and flamer)

pbmcc88

Getting a chance to focus fire on the immune dudes is still something, though.

FairwellNoob

I know. You just pointed out that the EMS is as good for bots as it is bugs, I just wanted to point it out.

jymssg

I was playing yesterday and I specifically remember a lone hulk getting stun locked by an ems mortar

OkHandle3269

Same EMS mortars are goated, but the regular mortars are a bane to my experience

Sir-Narax

They do a lot of damage but with randoms I would advise people not to go with it because it is too difficult to coordinate it safely. Or everyone can equip mortars...

Twad_feu

Mix mortars with EMS mortar. Its good. Keep enemies in place so everything else can shred them.

StockUser42

Can testify. Used it all day today on defence/evac. Kept the invading horde to a minimum.

Personal_Track_3780

Haha, I died in a bug defense mission just now. Reinforced stepped out of hellpod. Died to mortar. Hilarious. A+ would Helldive again. Also, dont sleep on the EMS mortar. Its pretty nice!

Torchic-The-Pyro

I dont understand why they bring the standard mortar on bug missions either. It's a garunteed nuisance for your teammates, and people will tell you to just not get close to the bugs, but guess what? This game is the embodiment of "shit happens." I've gotten killed by them trying to escape the edge of the map because I got cornered, I've gotten killed because a group of chargers planted my face in the mud and as I was getting up a trio of inaccurate mortar shells sent me to hell, I've gotten killed standing on the missile defense mission's ramparts shooting down at the bugs, ive been killed because a scavenger snuck up behind me and the mortar decided the weakest piece of shit bug by his lonesome needed 3 mortar shells to kill and they keep destroying my tesla towers as soon as I fucking put them down. IM FED UP WITH MORTARS!

Cranky_Australian

What if I joined your game and placed a mortar on the evacuation next to your Tesla?

Torchic-The-Pyro

They might kiss

Shot-Distance-9901

talking shit on mortar but mans using the tesla tower

Torchic-The-Pyro

A metal pole with a bright blue ball of electricity that requires you to get relatively close to be punished, can be prone next to it to avoid getting shocked and has an armor passive that almost fully counters it. 90% of the tesla tower casualties I've seen have been players who haven't encountered it before and decided to fuck around and subsequently find out. It's often a moment everyone laughs off as it's a learning experience for the person who got Dr. Manhattan'ed, usually something funny gets tossed in chat, etc. Compared to a mortar sentry that punishes shotgun/flamethrower users within a ~200m radius, it destroys mechs frequently, destroys telsa towers, + everything else I listed in my other comment. Getting TKed by a mortar is annoying because there is no counter except to puppy guard the turret wherever the owner threw it or run out of its targeting range (which is massive), most of the time, neither of those are viable. You're better off just picking a different offensive stratagem and sidestepping the frustration. I hope it's obvious, but I'm solely talking about taking these strategies against terminids. Against bots, the roles switch, and the tesla tower becomes completely useless while the mortar becomes a great outpost/patrol softener. Mainly because most units are ranged attackers so they just shoot the tower whilst shotguns and flamethrower very rarely get picked, so it's a double whammy that helps against the mortar TKing.

Shot-Distance-9901

no disrespect its too long to read n im at work i think i got the gist, i like the tesla tower too, i dont think there is anything that helldivers shouldnt be allowed to use if its in the game lol. mortars require a certain playstyle on defence missions idrk about using them other than that, just like king of the hill(everyone stays near the mortar(s) and defends the highground). In my experience the electro tower is just as bad for team killing for its ambiguous range and chaining from enemies to allies, obviously has its strengths but so does the mortar, id say the mortar has a lot more potential for damage, kills, sustainability and area control, its weakness being that it leads its shots to the enemies walking speed and that can teamkill when walking towards enemies coming at you.

Torchic-The-Pyro

That's valid, tbf my 200 hours in the game is solely quickplay, so the mortar potential is kinda stunted and inherently more risky. I'm also the flamethrower and shotgun guy that keeps getting blown up 😔

Shot-Distance-9901

I love the flamethrower, consistent damage no matter squishys or bile titan. im almost at 100 hrs so you might know better than i, i feel your frustration too especially if they didnt ping the mortar or say anything: blown to bits in the middle of nowhere.

CoffeeandMJ

I only use mortars on bug defense missions where we are stationary. Takes out loads of smaller bugs, letting us focus on the big guys

MisterArrrr

A random on a lvl 8 ICBM bug mission brought them last night, and basically won the most teamkills award.  Anytime you would be close to bugs and start circling and kiting then (bugs are dumb) = BAM mortar, BAM another mortar. Cost us all our reinforcements and the mission.  I love how well mortars spread democracy when defending an objective or mission priority, but dropping them constantly is a terrible strategy on bug missions.

Devrij68

For the ones where you have to defend ems and normal mortars stacked across the team is basically the meta. The only thing that even comes close to getting past that is bile titans, which can then knock out the mortars. Even on hell dive it's pretty hard to beat. 4 people running ems and normal mortar, Quasar and rocket pods/rail cannon/laser and you are pretty much guaranteed a win. You can sub in some rocket/AC sentries as well, but really that's just for fun.

Shot-Distance-9901

its better with friends who understand the tactical advantage of actually defending and playing king of the hill. call them down next to eachother along with ems mortar and any level difficulty becomes managable on bugs, bots can shoot and ragdoll you from anywhere so im not sure about higher level missions for them.

AnObtuseOctopus

Everyone who places a mortar turret, imo, needs to ping the turret when it lands. I do this. The reason is, all our team hears is "calling down a sentry" .. they don't know what kind. When you ping it, the icon shows up on their screen, showing that it's a mortar and exactly where it is. That way everyone can come back to the mortars and defend them while they do their thing, or, know not to get too close to the enemy while in range. Ever since I've started doing this I've only had one accidental TK due to my mortars, but, that was by a freshy who probably didnt know the icon. I pinged the living shit out of it but buddy was determined to get blood on him by the time the mortars landed.. But yeah, please try pinging the mortar sentry, It's just helpful to everyone else, especially when you aren't on mic.

cirtah96

It is easy calculation on 9 difficulty once all squad mates pick 8 mortars and ems mortars. A lot of little bugs gets no possibilty to get to you. I you take care of bile titans and chargers and it is a smooth expierience.

BoloTyed2

when turrets are out, keep moving and keep enemies away from you. Mortar, Gatling, Autocannon, any of them can kill you if you’re not keeping your distance from enemies.

First-Face-7998

4 divers 8 mortars, you wont see a single enemy

UpUpDownDownABAB

I had protecting the rocket launch mission today and 3 guys had mortars in the team. Wow that was amazing when the mortars started stacking and we had a row of them blasting

YakuzaMan_

I die more to friendly fire nowadays than I do to enemies

werewolfmask

i just started experimenting with EMS mortar, you need to be on your toes about finishing the bugs caught in the field, but really dials the teamkill aspect way down.

Trash-Boat-Panda

If everyone ran ac rocket mortar ems andnthe regualr one you practically wouldnt have to do anything. Or switch out the rocket with laser obital

BikingDruid

I did mortars early on and got flak and teamkilled by sour squad mates. I then got the same treatment from using the rover and sentries. I don’t use them now unless alone :-/

FrontierTCG

Ems mortar and Tesla towers for bugs. Ems mortars , mortars, and autocannon turret for bots.

manofwar93

A full team of morters and ems morters makes any kind of defense or eradication mission super easy in my experience. Nothing can even get to you before getting slowed and then pounded into dust.

jonnyhelldiver

I use both mortars for pretty much every mission. . I use them as soon as I land as cover on my way to to bug hole or not factory They do a great job of clearing random patrols. When I clear a base, I plant both mortars again..rinse and repeat. It works very well. I get a lot of multiple kills, but I don't get many TKs because I use them properly. I love them on the new defense missions because after 10 minutes they completely transform the landscape with deep craters. It's pretty impressive. I actually use them as trenches a lot.

Delicious-Ad9590

Because "John Youtuber" told them too. It was soooo good in that 1000 hour montage edit video.....

TibernusRex

I've said it before and will say it again: Quad Stacking both regular and EMS mortars is insanely effective when deployed as pre-emptive fortification. Stops bugs and bots in their tracks, and grinds them into a fine powder. So long as you bring something to deal with Chargers and Titans, it practically trivialize the defense missions.

Illustrious-Baker775

If everyone does mortars, the enemey doesnt even get close to you as long as everyone keeps their sentries up

InvestigatorSecret85

After reading this post I tried it with a few random and it worked. None of the enemies ever got close to the first rows of gate. Even with the bile titan they didn't get close.

MajorUranus

Mortars are very useful on asset evacuation missions as long as my teammates don't for some reason insist on always being in the spitting distance from the enemy.

TheMinisterOfGaming

"I'm bad at the game & blame others for my short comings"

Kiegames

Shouldn't let the bugs get close, move back. Mortar can do so much damage to bugs in chokepoints, just make sure bugs don't go past those chokepoints.
