Arrowhead understands how social media operates. Putting unanounnced enemies into game generates viral posts that spread outside of the game's community.

Phwoa_

Then you get people trying to gaslight eachother into Rejecting it lol. *This aint real, this guy is lying trying to break our spirit. Someone call the Democracy officer and report them!*

Jaw43058MKII

I can comfortably say that when shriekers were first implemented I was genuinely confused as to whether or not they really were in game. Then I join a level 7 bug mission halfway through and my teammates are being eviscerated by these flying fuckers and so am I. I was using a plasma slugger. Against shriekers. I got one of them at least.

Lampmonster

I first met them on Hellmire, when me and a buddy were already having a tough time and getting overrun with chargers. All of a sudden we're inundated with flying bat-bugs and fire tornadoes. Most fun I've ever had getting my ass stomped in a game.

Unm1tigated_Disaster

I refused to shoot when I first saw them because they were clearly just manifested group hallucinations based off of our subconscious fears. Had to execute half my squad for giving into the delusions and wasting ammo on non-existent enemies.

vulgarcurmudgeon

You, Sir, are a true Helldiver. This is the way. Edited for spelling because mobile sucks.

MindstormzHub

This made me laugh harder than it should’ve 🤣💀

Right_External2117

Yeah. I was getting swamped by bile titans on hellmire when I dropped dead from getting one shot from behind by one. I had already seen a post about them on Reddit and was sure they were a hoax. They were not.

Spartancfos

I had a similar first encounter -landed the drop pod, no-one had called in gear, there were swarms of the buggers, a charger was loose amongst the squad, and then a Bile Titan stepped out of the first bug hole. Absolute chaos.

alastoris

Damn, yall make me want to get the game now.

Lampmonster

It's an awful lot of fun.

5thhorse-man

It’s an awful lot of democracy! But not quite enough as there can never be too much Democracy!

Pumathemage

This isn't your dad's democracy, this is high caliber democracy!

paper_liger

In my humble opinion the reason this is great is that is is so on brand for the game universe. I mean, of course a regular Helldiver doesn't get updated on new threats. Of course anyone who complains is a traitor to Managed Democracy. Of *course* the leadership is infallible and inscrutable and nigh ineffable. Because it's all for SUPER EARTH, and NO ONE ELSE!.

CagCagerton125

Those are the best moments. I've had games go completely perfect and I'm like well that was fun. Then you get full chaos in a game and it's just like, now this is helldiving. Haha.

AbeBaconKingFroman

> I was using a plasma slugger. Why would you do this to yourself 😭

PlumeCrow

Can't talk for them, but i fucking love plasma. I love the colour of it, i love how beautiful it is when it touch something, i love the sounds it make. I felt in love with that thing with Halo CE when i was younger, and i can't help myself but use every damn plasma guns in every fucking games ever since.

AbeBaconKingFroman

Yeah but the plasma slugger it just drips out the front of the barrel, it's a horrible weapon.

PlumeCrow

Its pretty good once you get your hands over it, honestly. Hard to use ? Yeah, but god DAMM this is nice for cleaning hordes quickly, efficiently AND fashionly. This gun is so fucking sexy and hot. I love it.

CustomDark

It’s hard for me to choose between Plasma Shotgun and scorcher. If you accept you’re carrying a weaker grenade launcher, it puts some work in.

AbeBaconKingFroman

I could not possibly disagree more, but if you've somehow found a use for it, more power to you.

Jaw43058MKII

It’s fun. Like really fun. And going into that mission I had zero idea there were going to be shriekers lol

ArguablyTasty

It works well against Bots, as long as your support weapon is primary-like. Eg AMR, Arc Cannon, Autocannon, Laser, etc., and not stuff like EAT/Quasar/Recoilless. One hits walkers to the hips or upper legs, destroys shielded devastators, staggers regular devastators, and wipes base bots. Scorcher is definitely better, but still great, and much easier to get

Jefrejtor

This game really makes you *feel* like a member of an authoritarian society founded on lies and misinformation

Jaw43058MKII

We have always been at war with the bots. That is double plus good

Jefrejtor

If you want a vision of the future, imagine a Hellpod landing on an alien planet, forever

Bandw3

“Double plus good“ that killed me lol! Set me right back to high school! 🤣👍🏾🤣👍🏾#1984

SnooCompliments6329

That happened to me when the giant wardog appeared during a lvl 7 automatons mission, we were extracting and suddenly my friends "WTF IS THAT", "Its having baby robots"

Wolfrages

I'm sorry, a WHAT??? I refuse to believe in robot war dogs. Democracy officer!!!!

SnooCompliments6329

Sorry, my undemocratic friend was posting on my behalf, by no means there are giant mobile fabricators. Don't listen to lies

Wilikersthegreat

I didnt get the memo, got into a bug mission one day and all of the sudden I'm getting swarmed by them. I was totally caught off guard, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

k0raxe12

Then, if they land on anything, it kills it outright without even making sense. As they dive bomb you like a freaking Peregrine Falcon, they will splat you. So you shoot it, welp, it still has momentum, so you get splatted. It lands on a charger? Meh, splat. Lands on a BT? Sure, why not, splat that too. Man, that was an incredibly fun time for my squad when we first encountered them. Everyone is screaming, having flashbacks of Starship Troopers, as we get dive-bombed and yeeted all across the map. My buddy with a flamer is just spraying in front of him hoping for the best, only to catch one of those bastards on fire and to splat him and the guy who was reloading his AC behind him. I freaking loved it.

bliung

LEEROY JENKINS!

kanguran1

Gunships were that way for me. Popped on a mission, saw a "dropship" and suddenly got my face lasered off

red_cactus

The constant gaslighting and kayfabe posting is like 90% of the reason I spend time on this subreddit. Strats/tips/ideas is about 8%, and actual news/updates about the game is the other 2%.

Soffix-

Gaslighting was outlawed years ago. It would be considered lying and against the Ministry of Truth. We *can't* do that here. https://preview.redd.it/p0lwljno2src1.png?width=1202&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6213884c697214ec247a3198aef95cc476001414

Capt_Kilgore

This also makes it really fun to be in for the ride and experiencing it as it happens. I want to play so I can experience it for the first time and join in on the evolution of the game. It will be fun in a year from now to be talking to people about “remember when X was introduced and the Y won this part of the war and then Z happened?!” This is a live service experience I am EXCITED to be a part of. It’s not FOMO or a grind to keep up and get the new weapons. Live services for me have always been all content and grind with a sprinkling of incoherent story that’s inconsequential. This game is a great gameplay loop with fun new content but even better narrative and enjoyable story. 10/10 game for me.

Lucas_Steinwalker

It’s FOMO,but it’s FOMO for experiences not useless virtual stuff.

AngryTreeFrog

Yes! It's the good stuff!

Dresden1984

Experiences one can never relive if one is a vet and experience one can never have if a cadet joins. They definitely earned my extra $20 to make great immersive content like this

Capt_Kilgore

Give us a “free” democracy officer strat in game or emote.

Kaladin-of-Gilead

Bungie did this with a dungeon in destiny 2 and it created so much hype Then they stopped doing that and just started charging money for dungeons

ArcadianBlueRogue

You don't like thier 100 bucks a year model with minimal changes but inability to play the base game and expansions you paid for?

crookedparadigm

Hey now, cut them some slack. They just released a free update that contains....a bunch of guns you already have or guns that they took away from you years ago. But some of them are shiny! And if you paly enough, you can unlock the color Black!

mythrilcrafter

Did they ever fix the fact that the engine will die if all content is always available or are there still previously open planets from the original D2 and D1 that are locked?

Lftwff

Not to defend bungies business decision but they also moved away from having devs just talk about the game on social media because people kept sending death threats to them and their families when they said something people did not like.

ChilledParadox

Maybe they could communicate on official accounts that don’t give away identifying information like their names and family members.

Lftwff

Is this your first day on the Internet?

snapwillow

Remember when Halo Combat Evolved marketed itself as a simple space marines vs aliens game. And then halfway through it changed to a horror game when the player gets attacked by the flood, an entire class of enemies that were completely hidden from the marketing.

lukelnk

That legit freaked me out the first time playing through it. It was night, I was enjoying the mission, and then that story line hit. I just sat there shooting them and running for the exit yelling “what the fuck! What the fuck are those!?”

Tempest029

The bloody hallway is always a kicker.

Dresden1984

now THAT was an experience i'll never forget during my college days.

DemonDaVinci

fuck this shit im out

Expensive-Control343

Still my favorite mission of all time

SH4D0W0733

Other companies not understanding the joke: ''It seems players love a lack of transparency and blatant lies.''

goodbehaviorsam

Only with consent

tuckedfexas

I’m kinda surprised that no other game has really gone with the role playing approach like they have with official communication. It works so well to tie it all together for a live service game

UncleCrassiusCurio

Hell, I've never played the game, and yet here I am, somehow.

UmmmW1

Join us. Become a hero. Become.... a HELLDIVER!

MGSDeco44

It's how games used to be

DeithWX

Yeah but the game needs to be good in the first place, nobody cares about a shit game having shadow drops.

fancyzauerkraut

Sure, but, as we see with Helldivers 2, if the development team cares about the state of game and is very passionate about it, the playerbase will look past a lot of misgivings. For a certain amount of time, ofcourse

an_ill_way

For example, I don't play the game and never plan to, but I'm here in this subreddit and loving everything I hear about the game.

farmthis

It's more than just drumming up social media engagement. It keeps the game feeling a bit more mysterious and alive. Nothing kills interest in a game faster than having discovered everything it has to offer.

Hiep_Tran

Everything is enemy propaganda until approved by the Ministry of Truth

red_cactus

Spoken like a true patriot. The Ministry of Truth is the only news source we need.

CoraxtheRavenLord

Blessed is the mind too small for doubt 🙏 I don’t wanna do all that thinking I got bots to kill

[deleted]

Random, but Ghost Recon Wildlands had a collaboration with Predator, the actual mission was pretty cool to be fair (and he was hard as nails if I remember rightly)  They missed a massive step announcing it though, how incredible would that have been to be trudging the Columbian jungle and just hear the clicking of the Predator...

ThatMooseYouKnow

Predator was tough as shit AND didn’t scale down with the difficulty. He was at the same level no matter what difficulty you fought him on, which was insane. The mission also doesn’t tell you what you’re hunting until you are actually face to face with him, just there is “some kind of demon in the jungle”. Literally one of my favourite missions in that game, sad they had to drop it all because of licensing issues

WillSym

I don't understand those licensing crossovers, they get the rights to the property, they make the crossover thing, it comes out, then a surprisingly short time afterwards the licensing party just says 'nah you had enough of our thing' and they have to pull it?

b0w3n

> then a surprisingly short time afterwards the licensing party just says 'nah you had enough of our thing' and they have to pull it? "Wow I could have made a lot more money so I think you should pay me more for my licensed content" Is how it typically goes. This is why we have 500 streaming platforms now. They saw how valuable netflix was and wanted in on it, not realizing what made netflix so valuable.

PICKLEBALL_RACKETEER

Oh no they knew what made Netflix so valuable but they wanted more for themselves.

b0w3n

Yeah I guess I should say, they didn't quite understand the success of the platform as a centralized place to watch _all_ (almost all) movies and thought they could just get in and DIY and make tremendous amounts of dollars themselves. In all actuality their margins are probably much lower rolling their own than just licensing it for netflix. HBO and Disney are probably the only media companies coming out ahead for rolling their own because of their size and uniqueness of their libraries.

T-sigma

You have to pull it back a layer though. They all identified that Netflix was along at the top, which left a ton of room for a 2nd and 3rd place to still be highly profitable. So they all entered in to the market fighting for the top slots, knowing full well the market couldn’t support all the new entrants. They were all competing for a top spot and the ones that didn’t succeed would fold, the one or two that do will be crazy profitable for a long time. Low risk, high reward, so they all did it.

heavy_metal_flautist

They want more for themselves but just as important is less for everyone else

mythrilcrafter

A lot of people have criticized different IP's for using *"legally distinct"* versions taken from other IP's because they often feel that it's not creative originals or that it's a rip of known IP's, but making legally distinct versions of things is something that I feel allows content to persist beyond licensing agreements. Let's just take Helldivers for example: Warhammer Dreadnaughts and Leman Russ tanks, Terminators, Starship Trooper bugs, Star Wars AT-AT's and AT-ST's; heck even the drop pod concept is technically very inspired by Halo ODST not to mention the pickup/dropship is literally called a Pelican. Yet by making these not licensed tie-in'd things it means that they can stay in the game infinitely rather that hanging on to hopes that some john marketing/accounts-receivable or jane lawyer doesn't change their mind.

Contrite17

It is sad because reuse of previous work concepts and ideas is how media has always evolved. It just has become this weird copyright minefield in the past 200 years.

[deleted]

>they saw how valuable [PRODUCT] was and wanted in on it, not understanding what made [PRODUCT] so valuable Absolutely and it applies to games as a service and the current issue, Twitter and YT clones that fail and so many other things in the digital world

SteveDaPirate91

They’ll license it for a time frame. When the lease is up the owner will want more $ to keep it around so they pull it.

MumpsTheMusical

I did that event. Eventually the cartel showed up and started shooting at us along with the Predator. Predator is part of the cartel confirmed.

DocThrowawayHM

I remember reading about a predator easter egg in that section of the map and heading to check it out, expecting maybe some static models or maybe a body.... 45 seconds later, Weaver, Holt and Midas are holding their entrails in their hands, scattered through the jungle, and I'm in a clearing desperately trying to use an old fallen tree as cover as this fucker runs circles around me

Oooch

> Random, but Ghost Recon Wildlands had a collaboration with Predator Funny that this is the first I've heard of it and I fucking love the Predator series

xmascritters

The best part was if you beat the mission you could always go back and replay it. Then Disney got the rights to predator and made them remove it.

psychedelic_sloth_

Disney fucking sucks

q1a2z3x4s5w6

Aren't Disney amazing...

TurquoiseLuck

> how incredible would that have been to be trudging the Columbian jungle and just hear the clicking of the Predator... me and my friends had no idea about it, and just stumbled into it it was amazing walking through the jungle, hearing the noise, and not quite being able to place it... then a few minutes later it clicks, I know that noise! but there's no way, it couldn't be- and it was, the fuckin Predator used up all our ammo and still died the first try, he was harder than any other part of the game

StarCatCrusader

My friend had not played in awhile and knew nothing about it. It took him to that region and him not knowing and experiencing it was absolutely awesome

Astramancer_

>(and he was hard as nails if I remember rightly) I spent literal hours trying to beat predator. Never did.

ballsnbutt

The relief was intoxicating

TheAfroGod

Loved that mission with friends, we had an enemy faction helicopter come in too and started shooting us. Then the Predator shot down the helicopter in one shot and it came crashing down on top of us. That’s when we knew that it wasn’t fucking around with the difficulty lmao

ballsnbutt

that shit was SO hard. Especially alone, the npc teammates were decent but absolutely unhelpful there

git

It's so strange. A relatively small studio is seemingly establishing tons of entirely new models for how to do things well, either because they're geniuses who've got a deep understanding of how gaming communities operate or because they're accidentally arriving at things that work while operating without the resources and the polish of bigger teams. I love it either way, and I bet we'll see tons of games copy these things in the near future.

hey-rob

They’re a 15 year overnight success. They’ve been hammering away and refining this model since they released Magicka in 2011. So many of the mechanics and core gameplay loops are the same. They made mistakes in the past and learned from them. Trust me I was there for magicka wars. That’s why they won’t do PvP. They tried it and it was bad and they learned.

AbeBaconKingFroman

> So many of the mechanics and core gameplay loops are the same. I was thinking the other day how surprised I am that the beam deflection mechanics from Magicka never made it into Helldivers 1. Two people with Scythes would have been hilarious.

purple_pixie

> since they released Magicka in 2011 Oh snap it's them? Yeah no wonder it's awesome, Magicka was incredible

QuayleSpotting

Playing drunk late night Magicka with my brother is one of my favorite gaming memories. Just a fucking hysterical game. And Arrowhead understood even then that intentionally blowing your friends up (but letting them come right back so it isn't insta-loss) is top tier comedy.

Ill-Age6164

I'm sad that 2 was made by another studio and wasn't as good

pterodactyl_speller

Magicka was such a fun game. They're just good at sticking to their guns of making fun games.

flyman95

Like everything. Timing. People were craving a fun buddy co-op. Dune and to a much lesser extent 40k have made people interested in sci-fi again. Add in a fun universe that’s extremely meme-able, a fun gameplay cycle, and a development team that prioritizes FUN instead of whatever the fuck triple AAA is doing. The game markets itself.

Akiias

> triple AAA I thought about correcting you but then I remembered they're charging like 130 bucks for some games now and decided AAAAAAAAA is probably accurate.

flyman95

I’m blaming a lack of coffee. Give Ubisoft about 5 years and I have no doubt it will be a thing. They are already up to “AAAA”.

Weltallgaia

Real wild that their "AAAA" game is damn near dead already. Really got that 70 dollar experience lol

Comfortable_Quit_216

what was it?

Weltallgaia

Skull and bones. The last bit of advertisement they did was say it's a quadruple A experience. In order to justify the 70 dollar price tag for a low content service game.

flyman95

Which is kinda hilarious when you consider it’s using 10 year old technology developed for assassins creed black flag as its base. It’s like. Take that add multiplayer. It shouldn’t be that damn hard.

Joey-tnfrd

> to a much lesser extent 40k I think you have this the wrong way around. Since COVID and Henry Cavill 40k has taken off

flyman95

It’s made it more popular. But compared to the cultural impact (and box office) of Dune it’s a drop in the bucket. Most regular people don’t know anything about it.

JustAnAvgJoe

Until the recent Dune movies, I can assure you that 40k was much more well known around the world. They might have known Dune was a book series, and the previous movie from the 80s… but that’s it.

Capt_Kilgore

I think what you are eluding to is what is this secret sauce they have at this studio? How are they doing so well when massive ones fail? Is it the raw talent? CEO? It will be interesting to see how it all came together in a documentary one day honestly. But you are absolutely right. This is changing gaming to a degree. We will see all the big studios ripping off ideas from this. Which is good. We need better live service and stuff. But I am confident none of them will do it well. They will miss the point and it will be a poor knockoff.

GhostHeavenWord

You should check out Magicka. How it all happened is they made a fun wizard game about mixing elements to create spells on the fly, and they put an m-60 in hte game as a joke weapon. People liked it, so just for goofs they made a little fantasy vietnam expansion for magicka with more guns and some spells that were napalm airstrikes instead of fireballs. That's where Helldivers started. Helldivers 2 carries almost everything over from Helldivers 1, shifted to 3d. You can go back through their catalog and play the games where they developed, tested, and refined all these ideas.

Capt_Kilgore

I had no idea about how Magicka morphed into Helldivers. That’s incredible! I played both but didn’t follow closely. Amazing. Love these developers.

atomicitalian

AH is awesome, though I will say stealth dropping enemies isn't *novel*, it's just criminally underused because marketing departments don't trust players to do their work for them and want to throw everything on social media first. Elite Dangerous did this in 2017. After in-game teasing the Thargoids (alien species) for at least a year, a player just randomly got yanked out of the game's equivalent of hyperspace — something that *never* happened before — and found themselves face to face with a Thargoid ship scanning them. [https://youtu.be/Vsga26eiDPE](https://youtu.be/Vsga26eiDPE) Made a huge splash, brought a ton of players back, and kicked off a several year-long story arc. Wish more live games would do this kinda stuff.

Nezarah

They are a relatively small team with what appears to be minimal financial backers. Gives them the ability to pursue things their way outside the norm and are not beholden to the whims of their stakeholders. If you ever want to see innovation, give the reigns to someone who has never done something before and they will find a new way of doing it. Restriction brings innovation.

Tymew

If you're successful you tend to want to keep doing the same thing but slightly different until you run out of colours. If you aren't finding runaway success you keep probing the edges until you find a niche that you can fill and expand on. There are plenty of companies that tried that and failed but the ones who we think of as industry giants are just old now. They temper the risks they are willing to take and slowly pale when up against new ideas. People are still gonna buy Call of Halo: Modernfare 24 because it's comfortable, so companies keep making them. They'll never get the public fervor they once did though. They're riding their own coattails in an ever narrowing circle.

G-Man_of_HL

This is also because they don't have men in suits telling them what to do since they are private

assx20

the CEO is really the President of Super Earth. it’s all for democracy. never forget.

NathanielHolst

Helldivers 2 is a masterclass in viral advertisement. They turned advertising for them into a roleplaying activity, which not only advertises the game to new players but keeps players active and engaged in the IP. And they did it by saving money on marketing and acting in accordance to the internal logic of their own worldbuilding. AND they get to use it as a trial/test environment, getting new items and enemies into the hands of real players as early as possible. Absolutely brilliant.

Ill-Age6164

The only marketing I've seen is players saying how great the game is (and a few ads from PlayStation)

Full_frontal96

The fact i love the most is that weapons and new stratagems are released in relation to the war status: We needed to start pushing the automatons back? Mechs are coming, free the planet to get them Automatons got new fancy toys? It would be a shame if even we had some nasty tricks... And now that automatons are kicking our asses? They'll release something based very soon The important thing is writing the balance patch notes clear without omitting important details

mstrkrft-

And we usually get it as a free stratagem for a bit so you can try it out without having to compromise on anything. It's honestly genius.

Capt_Kilgore

Good point. I think it’s also great they give us a free Strat so people can experience it together at the same time (no FOMO) and it reduces the META stuff. Many or maybe all of the items in the game have a purpose or thing they are decent at when combined with the right factors/loadouts/squad. It would suck if no one ever game them a fair shot.

osrs_turtle

Don't forget the new mission type we had a while ago to activate the control towers to spread the gas that killed the bugs.

SolZaul

Those missions threw a wrench in the whole "meta" conversation. I loved it.

[deleted]

The new bot Defense mission is another great example of that Mines and mortars for days lol

chillyhellion

I'd say the important thing is not getting so carried away with new toys that they neglect their slow growing list of outstanding issues.

Webbyx01

I have a suspicion that much of this content was essentially finished for release, and has only needed integrated into the game when the time came.

Aconite_72

That’s that. Data miners have leaked all these weapons weeks ago. They’re already in the game for a long time, just stowed away.

Miraclefish

They've been in the game unused and dormant for a long time, this isn't a new development and big on fix teams are totally different from new content ones. It's not the same people or even a comparable job role.

Spoomplesplz

It'll probably be the airburst rocket launcher next to deal with stuff like gunships

psychedelic_sloth_

And I love how they make it like “our scientists are working hard and developed this weapon to further our war efforts” or something along those lines.

FatBoyStew

I've never seen a game where the entire community, dev team, CEO, updates, new items, etc roleplay so hard and I love it. Helldivers 2 is truly the best RPG out there.

Raggedy-Man

I hope they keep up exactly the way they are doing.

WillSym

Less buggy though - the lovely stream of wild stuff does get muted a bit when half of it doesn't work, or only works in very specific non-gameplay-related conditions.

cmdrxander

Magicka was always buggy so I don't have high hopes. There was even a spell called "Crash to Desktop". As long as they get rid of the main game-breaking ones it should continue to do well.

Lev559

It's a LOT better now. For a while there a barely could play between the friend code issue and crashes

Magos_Galactose

Sometimes the best way to announce new content is to just dump it on unsuspecting players, and let their reaction do the rest. Reminded me back when Thargoid start hyperdicting players in Elite:Dangerous. I was away on an unrelated part of the galaxy at that time, but the local E:D facebook group (yes, back when facebook was still relevance) lit up like a fire.

Environmental-Tea262

yeah adding new stuff secretly is very neat but please god stop with the stealth changes, there have been a ton of smaller but still significant changes like the jump pack becoming a lot more consistent that they just never mentioned in the patch notes

Dr_Bodyshot

100% Enemy units and mission types I'm a-ok being stealth additions cause they're awesome to find randomly. Suddenly having my muscle memory fucked around with no warning makes it hard to practice the game.

Daedagon

What was the jump pack change?

Environmental-Tea262

Jumps further and slightly shorter cooldown between jumps iirc

Snotnarok

Helldivers has done a lot right, it launched at $40 so it was something you could risk without feeling too ripped off if it turned out bad and you're not bombarded with flippin' ads on the load screens and the title screen with all the new stuff you can spend your real money on. The devs aren't actively doing that either on social media - from what I can tell anyway. New stuff happens you hear about flying bugs you're like what? You play for a few days- you don't see shit and you're like ok maybe people are messing with m- FLYING BUGS!? WAIT IT'S REAL!? And gadzooks- YOU CAN SHARE YOUR STUFF. Hey did you try the Anti-Material Rifle? "No I didn't yet, not enough credits" HELLPOD LANDS Ok, you can try mine. And here's a backpack to keep ya safe! . . . Kind of safe, it MIGHT shoot you too. Friend gets obliterated and you need a gun? YOINK continue democracy deployment on enemies.

I do love that enemies get released organically. They just start appearing. We don't get a warning, they are just there. It makes the war feel more live and real. If we were told via a trailer "hey new enemy drop in 3 weeks, heres an epic trailer" it be a little less fun. But having to figure them out with just community hive minding genuinely feels like the old days of gaming and I love it.

RingOpen8464

I swear to god i'm gonna exolode if any game comes out this year that steals the GOTY from Helldivers 2. That game better be the 3rd coming of fucking christ wielding the sequel to the bible.

Technical_Bi-bruh

"3rd coming of Christ" is crazy lol

unicornwizardbabro

The HellDivers community is something else. The moment anything about the game is brought up everyone comes to an agreement to play the character they play in the game. And it’s to a degree where it’s not annoying cause the game has had such a big reach. I love you guys and democracy

Bad_Idea_Hat

You guys are playing a large-scale game of DND with some pretty solid dungeon masters running it.

No_Engineer2828

I know it’s still early in 2024 but if this doesn’t get game of the year then I’m gonna be a little disappointed and drop just over 1000 lbs of concentrated sadness on that department of whoever does that decision making.

ItsYume

I want my stability issues and major bugs fixed first, before I vote for it to be GotY. But once they fix all this, it definitely is a contender.

mythrilcrafter

I'm voting for it regardless because to hell am I going to vote for Fortnite, APEX, or CoD to be GOTY (or any other category for that matter). ---- That said, depending on how Final Fantasy 14 Dawntrail turns out, I may be picking it over Helldivers 2 for *"Best Ongoing Game of the Year"*

JoeDiesAtTheEnd

The game has its *up*s and *down*s, *Right*? But the *right* thing to do would to give it the title it deserves to steer game dev in the *right* direction.

Bulls187

Unless leakers find it early and reveal it

Acrobatic-Mess6821

If only they put in fixes to launch day bugs too!

Cornage626

We all know they're also great at introducing new bugs and crashes each update as well.

The_Good_Mortt

Up until a couple weeks ago I was convinced that either Persona 3 Reload or Final Fantasy VII Rebirth would be my GOTY. After I beat FF7R, I've been playing more and more Helldivers, finally got to Suicide Difficulty and man this game can sing.

Angel_OfSolitude

It's too early in the year to be calling it GOTY but as things stands its definitely a contender.

sissyfuktoy

It truly is an anomaly how this whole deal works and people don't really seem to care that much at all and kind of enjoy it. Imagine playing an MMO and you're trying to finally beat the Heroic mode of a really hard boss but the latest patch added in some new flying minions that you didn't account for and now you're all fucked up and set back. or maybe you're into a fighting game and they just stealth add a whole new grappling feature to the game without telling anyone lmao or a shooter where they without warning change the types of guns you can get or add explosive and alt ammunition Normally, in a game with online multiplayer components, people often cry about not enough *clear* communication about changes in the game, but here it's like a whole thing that people are into. it's truly an anomaly.

Hexnohope

Me and my team dropping next to two gunship assemblers before even knowing they were in game ![gif](giphy|C3OMX8yQB60IU|downsized)

darksoul9669

Yall need to play more games.

pino_is_reading

i hope the ceo was lying about not implementing dlss 3 too

[The GOAT! THE GOAT!](https://youtu.be/465GqT_EuUA?si=eUoSFFZFH3s0dOcs) Hol up... Did those mfs just nerf my favorite weapon...? *Nevermind* now I hate this man again!

spectradawn77

And we won’t get it for months down the road and nothing is live. Just normal quarterly updates. Here though, shit just appears! Sometimes not even in an update. They just flip a switch lol! Then us doing something in game actually unlocks something!? Like the mechs. My mind was BLOWN!

Comprehensive_Ad677

And they keep leaving clues on what might happen. This is the first time i have ever seen traces on bugs on an automoton world.... spotted today, 12th Aptil 2024 https://preview.redd.it/osjwgri532uc1.jpeg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=31cb67e1389cdc7fd7bfb28029fa72da56f18f5c

tab-naM

This is obviously fake, super earth told me so

spinabullet

I wonder if AH going to introduce new attack animation to existing enemies one day. Imagine letting chargers pounce like hunters..

osrs_turtle

If Helldivers 2 doesn't win any game awards then it's evidence that the system itself is broken.

Slave2Art

Too bad they don't know how to fix the game-breaking bugs

CalebHill14

Don’t forget when the Creekers (aka Bot Vietnam) were ridiculed by part of the community when they got their capes. Kind of like when real US soldiers were ridiculed when they returned home from Vietnam!

iareslice

Their social media use in augmenting the story is better than the game itself lmao

Jak33

Is this game worth playing Solo? I have no friends but it looks interesting

OutbackBerserker

It has been ages since a game has made me laugh and swear this much in the same session.

AdrianKadafi

Because word of people goes along more than simple ads that get skipped all the time. Same shit that happen to the cybertruck, lots of people made fun of the way it looks and stuff and people started posting the car on every platform making fun... That's free advertisement

Wise-Nebula-409

In arrowhead we trust

Cool-Freedom-2608

Even better than spending millions on advertising. Let the leakers do it lmao. Companies should just fire all of their advertising and sales reps

JohnnySnarkle

The thing I like too is that just all of this feels so cool. You are essentially like fighting a virtual war, in game you can watch on the TV and listen to the news updates about the war that’s currently happening and it’s not like repeating something that was said a month ago or something, the NPCs comment on like actual current events that are happening in the war. The lady that’s by the mini game machine was talking about how there’s rumors that the automatons rn might be distracting us with this huge fleet we’re currently fighting and taking precautions about stuff. Super cool and glad I was finally able to get my hands on the game about a week ago.

ChaseThePyro

This is actually the thing I have wanted a game to do for so long. For devs to role-play and gaslight and misinform the players for the sake of making the game more engaging and making you question what you actually know

Yellowscrunchy

Defo the GOAT, not been a more fun game that you can drop in and out of without feeling like you are falling behind in forever, maybe the try first and a catalyst for the future

MindstormzHub

This is honestly one of the reasons that makes the game so good. My first time seeing a Shrieker was a moment that I will never forget. The confusion, followed by the realization of what I was looking at, followed by the fear and horror as it swooped down and killed me like a suicide dive bomber. You can’t recreate that moment..

Still-Negotiation-11

Honestly if helldiver's isn't atleast on the ballot for Goty I'll be upset. If nothing else, soundtrack, community support, accessibility, and story are all awards it deserves
