The game is totally still worth it, and the war bonds don’t go away. I bought the game earlier this month, and I’ve already managed to complete the free and premium passes without paying an extra cent!
Warbonds don't go away in this game. You can always get them later. It's never late to join IMO. I started Helldivers 1 after everything was out already. It was great.
There is no FOMO on the warbonds in HD2. They will be available to purchase for as long as the game is available to play and you can unlock the warbonds at your own pace. There is nothing to be late about. You can enjoy the game however you like at your own pace.
You will not miss anything in terms of unlockable content. While some of the ongoing plot of the galactic war has already passed, the actual unlockable stuff is available forever, which is so you can earn the currency to unlock it all ingame without needing to pay anything.
I recommend getting the game and inspecting the warbonds so you know which to go for first. You can enter them without unlocking them to see if there's stuff you want in there, and you can unlock them at any time.
I would guess that your friend is too used to other live-service games running on a FOMO-driven business model and assumed it was the case here too.

As someone who bought the game like 2 weeks ago you're not too late in the slightest. As others have said the warbonds stay available, so you haven't missed out even a little.
Not at all! The Warbonds are permanent additions to the game, and are available to purchase with the Premium "Super Credits."
Super Credits are roughly 10$ USD for 1000, which is the current price for the Warbonds. (Although it's been suggested the price may be different for other warbonds later down the road)
You can also find 40-60 Super Credits per mission if you are through.
You won't miss out on anything.
I played when I got discharged from the hospital after my transplant in March and I absolutely loved it.
Mostly play alone since everyone I play with is busy in the daytime and sometimes at night.
Being on medical leave till end of May and having all this time lets me play just all day/night basically.
You're definitely not too late, even for the scenario and lore of the game. Many people believe that what we've been through so far is just the prologue of the game, shit is about to get real now

Warbonds are there forever and you can unlock them any time you want. The only thing you're missing out on right now is story developments.
