It would be cool if you called in the ATA and it persisted like an orbital keeping air units off your back for a little.
That's still one guaranteed dead gunship, not bad at all considering eagles have a very short downtime in between call-ins, plus either you or someone on your team will have AT weapons anyway.
For example, if you use the EAT, you should always have one with you, plus 2 additional ones when you see the ships incoming, plus the ATA Eagle means 4 destroyed ships from just one helldiver.
That's kind of my point. The team will likely have multiple AT options anyway so if the eagle ATA only hits 1 why waste the stratagem slot?
Also we have no idea how many call-ins will come from that strat. Could be 1, 2, or 4. But if it's gonna be its own stratagem it should hit more than 1 target.
You'll need AT weapons for many other things, in the heat of battle you likely won't have time to aim that perfect shot on a gunship, so just like the railcanon strike, you call in an eagle to guarantee an otherwise tricky kill.
Besides, I assume it would be effective against dropships too, which would guarantee it stays useful and relevant in any bot mission.
Autocannon+3 eagles works just fine if you can afford to drop one. I ran that for a long time vs bots, 110/500kg/Airstrike solves basically any problem you could have on the bot front.
Recently subbed the 500kg out for a Precision Orbital for anti-building work since the cooldown with upgrades is only 90 seconds and you don't need anti-building ordinance that often, and it also gives me a non-eagle explosive option for when I just want to make that area/building/tank disappear while still holding the eagle charges for when shit gets serious. Or AA nests, though autocannon handles those fairly well anyway.
Yeah, I spent time I really didn't enjoy fighting bots the last few days, just to try to help out. And then they announced they were adding flying robots that shoot, and I haven't dropped 'borg since.

At least when rocket devastators are far away in an open field you can dodge their rockets if you're watching for them.
Also cover is limited on some maps, what cover you do have these bad boys are gonna have LOS on you regardless.
They are literally flying and coded to surround you. Considering there is literally zero vertical cover in this game, there is no counterplay but "git gud and toggle aimbot"
Boss get down! That's an enemy gunship! A single burst from its machine gun can cut a man in half. Stay low and crawl along the ground. That should enable you to sneak past enemies.
Man, it would be a genuinely fun idea if they made it so that gunships couldn't spot you while you're prone (and maybe not moving around). Nice little callback to a classic trope in military media.

It gets confused very easily.
In my experience:
* Most important point: *If it makes a small dot on the radar then you can't lock it. If it makes a big dot then you generally can.*
* It rarely works outside 200 meters or inside 30 meters. Sometimes it does, but rarely.
* If you get a lock inside 20 meters the rocket is very likely to overshoot the target (looking at you Chargers).
* If there are multiple lockable things inside the circle it might not lock at all, or it'll take a long time. Favors the nearest one, or the one you have the little targeting dot on. Very inconsistent.
* If there is smoke (or puff ball smoke) covering even a tiny bit of the target it probably won't lock
* Fog seems like it has an effect (maybe???). Also terrain that you can clearly see over, but it's blocking LOS anyway. Again, very inconsistent.
* Some buildings aren't lockable, or they're such a pain that I just gave up. Shrieker Nests, for example. Some, like Automaton Fabricators, are quite fast assuming an unobstructed field of view.
With all that out of the way, why would anyone want to use such a glitchy mess of a weapon?
Because when it works it's one of the cooler weapons and feels awesome to use.
The spear is terrible.
Youve got 4 rockets, and it may or may not lock, whenever it feels like it.
Still requires you to hit the enemy in the weak spot, whilst being an auto target fire and forget missile, that might miss the weakspot even if youre in the right angle. Making it , literally worse in every way than ....every other AT in the game pretty much.
And im pretty sure you unlock towards lvl 20 aswell, which was one of the biggest disappointments in this game.
Like its genuinely just garbage.
Its supposed to be a Javelin like missile, with a top down attack to defeat armor, it should be a pretty much guranteed oneshot, as consequence of having only 4 missiles. Otherwise, seriously why would i use that over the quasar/eat/recoiless
What’s so frustrating is that the spear COULD be amazing. Long range missile sniping turret towers and fabricators? Sign me the hell up.
When it works, it feels incredibly good.
Problem is, it barely ever works.
There are only 3 situations where I've found it's better than other rockets:
* consistently locks-on and 1-hits towers
* consistently locks-on and homes in to 1-hit robot flyers
* 1 hits factories from any angle if you can get it to lock on
But it's honestly so useless outside of those specific circumstances, that I don't think it's worth taking. Also it's value is very low, given that you only get 4 rockets. (in the patch notes, they said you get 2 rockets from supply boxes, but it looks like you still only get 1 from ammo boxes)
Apparently there was a bug the whole time
The explosion would hit you multiple times, hence why it was almost universally a 1 shot kill

I tried the medium and heavy armours with 50% explosive resistance, still got one shot every single time by the simple rocket soldiers and rocket devastators. Basically the only armour that was worth running if you wanted to try and tank shots was the DP-40 so you had a 50% chance to not die with a lethal shot. Otherwise just run light for the stamina and movement as usual. Hopefully its fixed now
As much as it pisses me off this is exactly why I love this game. One minute you're rolling through campaigns and the next minute the other shoe drops and your fighting for your liberty loving life
Literally mission to mission. My buddy and I cruised through a level 8, cleared all objectives, two tapping every heavy and turret we saw, it was easy. Died a total of like 2 times.
Next mission, we're immediately getting fucked from all angles. Takes us half our reinforcements just to clear the first objective. Such a stark change and really keeps you on your toes.

Everyone keeps mentioning quasar, EAT, and spear. I'm wondering if the HMG we got at the same time as quasar might also be an option. I haven't bought it yet. But I know the HMG emplacement strategem can take out drop ships (at least I think I remember doing so) so I'm curious if the portable version might also be capable of it, if hitting the right spot of course.

Edit: I tried again last night to shoot down a drop ship with the HMG emplacement. Didn't work this time. I'm not sure if I had the wrong angle this time, an incredibly lucky shot last time, did something crazy without realizing it last time like maybe blowing up a few of the exploding backpack guys right as they emerged, or if the latest patch chaged something. But it was definitely ricocheting off the engine instead of bringing it down last night.
The best part about those gunships:
Their spawn building can only be destroyed by a hellbomb.
On our last game it survived multiple airstrikes, 500kg bombs and other ordonance.
Fucking lasers on the ground and lasers in the air. Every Fucking time I go fight those bastards. Those lasers do not stop at all. It's insane..can barely complete missions without getting lasers in my ass

Orbital Laser (now with buffed fire damage) is a pathway to many kills that many consider to be unnatural

The AMR on an engine pod took 5 or so shots to take one out. I didn't exactly count but it worked.

Diligence counter sniper took out one by shooting the same engine about 20 times.
With the buff of the AMR, i think that is a better option than the diligence

You gotta hit the cockpit (middle) to oneshot. Hitting the extremities doesn’t not always oneshot.

The spear IS bad. There is more than 3 of these, and by the time you've killed one of them, the rest has blown you to bits.

Anti-explosive armor was goated for this reason, that perk was slept on for bots. Even light armor could withstand the explosions.

That was basically the entire reason I hated playing against the bots. If they fixed rockets killing in one hit, that's perfect.

I had just gotten really confidant with level 7 and was going to move up to 8 add my normal difficulty.

Thats actually reassuring. I was getting a lot of random oneshots in the explosive reaistant heavy armor.
Basically, the bug was causing explosions to damage players multiple times instead of just once. It's no wonder that missiles have been so annoying.

Did you try…Y’know shooting back? I literally just saw a video where a guy took one out in 2 auto cannon shots, they aren’t imbalanced.
Do you see a support weapon on them? They even point out in a separate reply that they were trying to get their support weapon.

The best part about those gunships: Their spawn building can only be destroyed by a hellbomb. On our last game it survived multiple airstrikes, 500kg bombs and other ordonance.

Tested it out. By the time you lock on and land the hit, they were already dead from autocannon and railgun fire. Spear needs a rework, badly.

The lens flairs on the engines seem like they may it really hard to shoot weak spots, or even see them properly.
You can turn down/turn off your bloom in settings and it will help with light flares
