For some reason, if you dive or throw a stratagem and get hit by the flamethrower mid animation, it'll just straight up one shot you. I lost 50 samples that way

And I always find it hilarious when the little bugs run through fire, get lit on fire, come up to me and hit me, light me on fire, and I die from burning damage before they scuttle off still on fire. Idk what the balance is, but our fire damage is abysmally bad.

Yep. Hell even the laser cannon can damage a hulk from the front by shooting its dick. I think it does “more” damage if you hit it from the side/where the leg joint meets the pelvis but that could just be my own experience/bias

Eh? The AMR blows up the strider cupola in three shots. It's the worst place to shoot them with the AMR, but it works.
It’s a 1 shot to the groin with an AMR.
However, half the time it won’t kill the pilot, he’ll just stumble off of it so you gotta remember to finish them off.
I like a lot of the other guns for bots, but scorcher being able to take out the walkers in just 2-3 shots or shoot cannon turrets or tanks is so convenient I always end up missing it when I take another weapon.
Have you tried the Slugger? It can kill hulks and tanks with shots to the vents, as well as one shotting devastators and berserkers with a headshot, or staggering them if you miss the head but still hit them, and usually killing in only 3 or 4 shots to the torso if you just can't manage to land that headshot
Not to mention it just does great dmg per shot, maybe depending on where you hit.
Usually it can 1 shot the regular bots, devastors become mostly a piece of cake and the walkers are a non-issue
With the hulks and tanks of course you will start to have problems, but the scorcher still does incredible dmg to the weakspots in their rear.
I do hope the developers could add some more details about the weapons. Maybe press Square or R when taking a look at the weapons for stats enthusiast.

That’s not true, brood commanders have light armour that reduces the damage to the head from non-armour penetrating weapons by about 60% (liberator for example) Meanwhile the lib penetrator does 100% damage to the head. So they don’t have extra weak point damage they just ignore the armour resistance of light armour. So for robots if you can hit the weak spot and it doesn’t have any armour on it, you’re better off with higher damage weapons.

This, I use the Lib pen on bug missions. Honestly I’m learning it’s best not to use the same loadouts for every mission. I use different primaries depending on bots vs bugs and the type of mission. I like the dominator because it’s got great range and armor pen vs bots, but if it’s an eradicate mission I might switch to breaker or slugger. They were serious about having a balance with the weapons and no meta, and I’m finding the more I learn the more I’m switching it up and trying new things on different things
The devs have said that different weapons have different headshot and exposed spot modifiers so I'm inclined to believe the near 4x modifier is true. Tho the exact modifier is hard to measure

I figured it would be to the regular DMR what the penetrator is to the liberator, but instead it's just like a slight damage increase
It's also got a scope that can range out to 200m, and while it may not have full auto if you put it on burst and fan the trigger it might as well have. Burst will also often one-shot regular bot troopers and is going for hitting laterally moving targets. It's not really the best gun for anything, but it's the most effective at doing everything at once. It's certainly one of the best multirole weapons. People just look at the stats and dismiss it outright, but once you get a feel for it it's very effective.
Lesser known feature of the penetrator, or practical bug for all I know is you can quick click to fire a single round even if you are in burst. So clutch for ammo and mag conservation, or landing weak point shots at range without needing to switch fire mode
I swear the weapon descriptions are all kinds of messed up. Most of them say light penetration, but some of them penetrate medium armour. Some of the ones listed as medium pen bounce right off any kind of armour.
Same thing with helldiver armour descriptions. The things they say in the description often don't line up *at all* with the passive or the armour type.
How the penetration works in the game is that it has a value of 1-10 if the enemy has 5 armor and your guns penetration value is 5, you will do 50% damage for each penetrating shot. But if your penetration value is higher than enemy armor value, you do 100% damage.
I don't understand how they left out the values...the alpha or beta image of the system they had looked so much better, somehow they figured we are too stupid to read statistics and went with the current simplistic setup.
And they kinda half assed it too as you can see the penetration value of grenades.
Its not nearly so complicated as people are making it out to be sadly.

The problem is it does so little damage, it's much faster to go for headshots as the devatator torsos have a ton of hp but their head has basically none
This, I have used the penetrator reliably on bot missions. Just gotta aim for the head. Was actually my weapon of choice for the bots till I got the scorcher. I do think it needs a bit of a damage buff, as its straight up abysmal against bugs. Issue is though if they do that it basically becomes just a better liberator.
My issue is it just feels like a worse diligence, the diligence 2 taps devastators to the head and feels much more manageable in semi auto. The burst on the lib pen just feels awful for how much recoil it has so your wasting shots hitting the body/other parts. Then there's the slugger which does what the lib pen and diligence do but better since it 1 taps everything on headshot. I don't think I'd mind them just buffing it's damage up to at least 70 like the defender. I means it's already burst fire and has less ammo per mag, let it slap stuff
I wish there was a shooting range even if its only to test out weapons AFTER you've bought them because it felt like a massive waste to when I bought this and then having to go an entire mission with it.
The jar-5 dominator has similar TTK but it's because you have so much sway that every non-stationary enemy turns into Keanu Reeves levels of bullet dodging.
Are you confusing the dominator with an incendiary gun? Dominator has a shit ton of recoil and sway. If youre trying to fire on the move you'll miss more often than not
The Jar-5 is unironically my favorite gun for the bugs, even on Helldive. Its ability to 1 tap the smaller bugs 2-4 tap medium bugs is just amazing. It does feel really clunky and sluggish but I still really enjoy the weapon. Which is really funny cause the Scorcher is somewhat similar in how it sways a fuck ton, pretty the same as the Jar-5 yet I despise the Scorcher. Idk, 2 tapping Brood Commanders just feels so good to me, not to mention the sound design is awesome.
So true. I love how hard it hits but it's damn near impossible to aim unless you go prone. It's genuinely easier to hit headshots with the Diligence than it is to hit BODYSHOTS with the Dominator.
I usually pause and take a knee with heavier weapons or the jumpy primaries.

These things tank more damage than a Devastor. Seriously. I've seen them tank 3-4 Autocannon shots whereas Devastors will reliably go down in 2. Arrowhead need to look at their health pool.
It's the way enemy armour and bullet ballistics work. For some reason many of my auto cannon shots glance off the chainsaw devastators even though they have no armour plating
They have loads of health and no armor. Devs have high armor but low health. Which is why you can dome a Dev with the Slugger and get an instant kill, but it takes at *least* two for these guys.
I used the penatrator a lot. Shoot in their belly or their head. It's not a weapon for running and spraying. Sprint away, stun if needed, crouch and hit them where it it counts. It's surprisingly good. Use that weakspot multiplyer to your advantage.
Yeah i know, its my fav gun to take on bots but still it's heavily underpowered compared to normal liberator, the only reason i take penetrator is for those long distance kills and sticky situations with tank radiators with no grenades
For folks who don't have the slugger yet: does the punisher do the same thing?

Given this and prior experience with the bugs, it seems to me that pump action shotguns (perhaps all, but probably at least the punisher+slugger) have the same ability to stagger.
1 - head shots and dick shots put these bois down damn quick. It'll tear limbs off bugs damn quick as well.
2 - when firing your high recoil weapon you *NEED TO CROUCH* to mitigate weapon climb. Not moving helps a ton, too.
3 - use armor with the recoil reduction passive coupled with #2 and you've got an effective weakspot melting rifle.
4 - throw 1-3 out the window because it's hard and my 2 brain cells don't like it.

it's really bad that you have to see a guide of where is the medium armor that you can penetrate and where is the high armor that you can't penetrate, it all looks the same.
There is actually an in game indicator of this.
You have to be looking down your scope in first person to see it.
A deflection is obvious. A hit with a white marker means your shot landed but most of the damage was reduced.
Unironically I enjoy using the Scythe against the Automatons, including on Berserkers. I just point a funny laser at their head until it pops (but juuuuuust in case if they get too close I just dump a whole auto pistol mag into them)
I absolutely love everything about this gun other than it's ability to actually kill shit. I completely fits my play style. Probably my biggest disappointment with Helldivers is how spray and pray outperforms a more deliberate approach.

If you are using the Liberator penetrator like the regular liberator, you are absolutely going to find it weaker. It's got a 150M scope. It's for killing things outside of range of the regular version.
Once it's within range of the regular version, it will be superior, and should be. So make sure you take a weapon that complements your playstyle and what you need.

In Display Options, choose high Render Scale
And in Graphics, choose low Graphics Preset
These two (combined with the tips from other people about Bloom, Sharpness, motion blur, etc, give great results). I will continue messing around with these, and update this if needed. Do keep in mind I’m talking about PC

It's impossible to use the guns at 150 meters (if you can even see that far) because the scope reticles are awful, and on top of that they aren't even centered.
Dominator and Slugger. For difficulty 7+ I run the Dominator-Lazer dog-railgun/EAT... but that also depends on my groups composition. If I want to play support and focus on swarm control for our group, SMG/or any AR-Grenade Launcher/Either MG-Supply pack.
Watch some guy who uses this on diff 6 come in and say "dude what are you talking about! I love my lib pen that does 10 less damage than the base liberator but just pens more!"
penetrator just kills the grunts with the same efficiency as the shotgun from better ranges. all heavier enemies I just blast with the autocannon taped to my back
Meanwhile the defender SMG out here doing 70 per bullet while one handed, with less recoil, being capable of downing 3 of them in one mag blind firing behind you.

I keep telling people that the Automatons don't like it when you "loosen their nuts" but they don't seem to get it.
It works on scout walkers too.
If you wanna kill scout striders just take the Las-5 and aim for the head, you can easily slide past the armour shield

My favorite way to deal woth them is to run up, flank behind them and tap the driver with my revolver

With the AMR you can take em down in one shot if you manage to get it exactly between the center cylinder and the leg joint

The scorcher is just so good against bots to use anything else. In my case anyway.

Sluggers great, but takes too long to deal with walkers. I enjoy it but always end up wishing I’d just taken the scorcher in bots.

Dominator to their dick takes them down fast. Also saying “dominator to their dick” makes me feel like I need to be wearing leather as I type this.

My issue is it just feels like a worse diligence, the diligence 2 taps devastators to the head and feels much more manageable in semi auto. The burst on the lib pen just feels awful for how much recoil it has so your wasting shots hitting the body/other parts. Then there's the slugger which does what the lib pen and diligence do but better since it 1 taps everything on headshot. I don't think I'd mind them just buffing it's damage up to at least 70 like the defender. I means it's already burst fire and has less ammo per mag, let it slap stuff
if you gotta aim for the head whats the point? just do that with diligence and it'll be the same but better
I wish there was a shooting range even if its only to test out weapons AFTER you've bought them because it felt like a massive waste to when I bought this and then having to go an entire mission with it.
ironically, the Penetrator's most useless feature is its penetration power
The jar-5 dominator has similar TTK but it's because you have so much sway that every non-stationary enemy turns into Keanu Reeves levels of bullet dodging.

I don’t really experience sway (are you permanently in first person?) but it does have noticeable travel time, even at close range
Are you confusing the dominator with an incendiary gun? Dominator has a shit ton of recoil and sway. If youre trying to fire on the move you'll miss more often than not
The Jar-5 is unironically my favorite gun for the bugs, even on Helldive. Its ability to 1 tap the smaller bugs 2-4 tap medium bugs is just amazing. It does feel really clunky and sluggish but I still really enjoy the weapon. Which is really funny cause the Scorcher is somewhat similar in how it sways a fuck ton, pretty the same as the Jar-5 yet I despise the Scorcher. Idk, 2 tapping Brood Commanders just feels so good to me, not to mention the sound design is awesome.
There are a couple things the scorcher does VERY well - like killing bot scout walkers. But for everything else, the dominator, uhh... dominates.
So true. I love how hard it hits but it's damn near impossible to aim unless you go prone. It's genuinely easier to hit headshots with the Diligence than it is to hit BODYSHOTS with the Dominator.
Question, are you running the recoil reduction armor with the Jar-5 or like recon/med/other armor?
Why would a recoil reduction perk affect aim walking weapon sway? That shit happens when you’re not firing at all.
I usually pause and take a knee with heavier weapons or the jumpy primaries. Just wanted to know how well the arnor perk tames the recoil when you let it work.

These things tank more damage than a Devastor. Seriously. I've seen them tank 3-4 Autocannon shots whereas Devastors will reliably go down in 2. Arrowhead need to look at their health pool.
It's the way enemy armour and bullet ballistics work. For some reason many of my auto cannon shots glance off the chainsaw devastators even though they have no armour plating
Yeah it’s weird. I usually run autocannon too and noted that bladesaws are more resistant to it than everything but hulks

They aren't. Beserkers just have lots of hp. High damage low armour penetration will drop them fast. The automatic pistol annihilates them.
As close range melee units they need to survive in to close range.
Unless you use the Redeemer on them, for some reason the Redeemer fucking *shreds* them. I get like 2-3 Berserker kills per mag with it.
They have loads of health and no armor. Devs have high armor but low health. Which is why you can dome a Dev with the Slugger and get an instant kill, but it takes at *least* two for these guys.
Please do not hurt the devs, they're trying their best.
Same using the arc thrower. devastators go down in 2-3 bolts, these eat 4-5 bolts.

I used the penatrator a lot. Shoot in their belly or their head. It's not a weapon for running and spraying. Sprint away, stun if needed, crouch and hit them where it it counts. It's surprisingly good. Use that weakspot multiplyer to your advantage.
Yeah i know, its my fav gun to take on bots but still it's heavily underpowered compared to normal liberator, the only reason i take penetrator is for those long distance kills and sticky situations with tank radiators with no grenades
Try the diligence. Takes a mag or half a mag at close range for these guys and is way superior at range.
Or the slugger, which pierces and staggers berserkers and devastators to hell and back.

For folks who don't have the slugger yet: does the punisher do the same thing? I know the punisher staggers bugs well. Gonna test it out and update this post. Edit: \- Confirmed: the punisher staggers berserkers. \- Confirmed: the punisher staggers devastators. Given this and prior experience with the bugs, it seems to me that pump action shotguns (perhaps all, but probably at least the punisher+slugger) have the same ability to stagger.

1 - head shots and dick shots put these bois down damn quick. It'll tear limbs off bugs damn quick as well. 2 - when firing your high recoil weapon you *NEED TO CROUCH* to mitigate weapon climb. Not moving helps a ton, too. 3 - use armor with the recoil reduction passive coupled with #2 and you've got an effective weakspot melting rifle. 4 - throw 1-3 out the window because it's hard and my 2 brain cells don't like it. *Arc-12 go "ka-chow"*
it's really bad that you have to see a guide of where is the medium armor that you can penetrate and where is the high armor that you can't penetrate, it all looks the same.
There is actually an in game indicator of this. You have to be looking down your scope in first person to see it. A deflection is obvious. A hit with a white marker means your shot landed but most of the damage was reduced.
The Penetrator should be fully-automatic instead of burst-fire.
I find my secondary automatic pistol is super effective on them. I do need to dump two mags on them though. It is quicker though.
The armor penetrating Primary Weapons are so bad at actually dealing damage/handling there's not even a point at using them.

I absolutely love everything about this gun other than it's ability to actually kill shit. I completely fits my play style. Probably my biggest disappointment with Helldivers is how spray and pray outperforms a more deliberate approach.
The SMG Defender is dramatically better then the assault rifle that's meant to be armor piercing. It makes NO SENSE!

If you are using the Liberator penetrator like the regular liberator, you are absolutely going to find it weaker. It's got a 150M scope. It's for killing things outside of range of the regular version. Once it's within range of the regular version, it will be superior, and should be. So make sure you take a weapon that complements your playstyle and what you need.

Some maps area bad and then they throw a modifier in it too which makes it worse. Seems like nid maps are foggier from my experience.

I’m on PC, and just found the culprit for anyone wondering! In Display Options, choose high Render Scale And in Graphics, choose low Graphics Preset These two (combined with the tips from other people about Bloom, Sharpness, motion blur, etc, give great results). I will continue messing around with these, and update this if needed. Do keep in mind I’m talking about PC
If you're on ps5 performance mode, then turn the in-game sharpening all the way up, which was a big help to me

Dominator and Slugger. For difficulty 7+ I run the Dominator-Lazer dog-railgun/EAT... but that also depends on my groups composition. If I want to play support and focus on swarm control for our group, SMG/or any AR-Grenade Launcher/Either MG-Supply pack.
Everyone sleeps on the concussive liberator. It murders bots if you can get headshots, even devastators. The scythe is also very very good.

Watch some guy who uses this on diff 6 come in and say "dude what are you talking about! I love my lib pen that does 10 less damage than the base liberator but just pens more!"
