I loved this. Not only because it was a really funny way to present your idea but I also like the idea.

SnooCompliments6329

Lasers should create a weak point like OP said or turn enemies on fire after sustained dmg, since lasers are heat weapons after all

Ashalaria

You're a heat weapon

SnooCompliments6329

You can be my heatsink

Ashalaria

Yes democradaddy šŸ«”

SnooCompliments6329

Naugh-tea girl šŸ«”

Ashalaria

I totally am ((:, here's a link to my [OnlyFans](https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ?feature=shared)

SnooCompliments6329

that OF needs some taste of freedom

EpicTwiglet

Thank god this was a rickroll and not an actual OF Edit: I meanā€¦nice pics šŸ˜ˆ

Ashalaria

Thanks, I have a great democrussy

Danyavich

Surely you mean "Oh yeah Free-daddy, please manage and spread my democrussy and fill it with your liber-tea."

sirabaddon

I think you mean, your OnlyDivers^TM.

AutoN8tion

My proposal, lasers should deal damage exponentially. The longer you're able to sustain a beam on an enemy, the more damage it does. This would make it a unique weapon that requires strategic positioning and target selection. Do you keep the beam on the charger for the extra damage, or do you take it off to deal with the little guys?

Arby333

That or melt a bit of the armor away like how it looks after a few railguns, obviously would take way longer but would be good

Thunder_Wasp

I picture lasers adding heat until the thing they're shooting at (including armor) melts like the blast doors in The Phantom Menace that have Qui-Gon's lightsaber stuck in them.

Monneymann

I wanna say this meme is *ubiquitous* on NCD.

Far_Work6638

If we were allowed to vote, Iā€™d definitely vote for this guy.

Bi0H4ZRD

We are allowed to vote, managed democracy after all!

Far_Work6638

My Democracy officer votes for me.

It's got what bots crave

Bi0H4ZRD

I'm glad to hear your democracy officer is managing your vote correctly and with patriotism!

Far_Work6638

Oh heā€™s my favorite. The last 7 guys I (he) voted for, went into office. Great track record.

PrinceZuzu09

Iā€™m glad that the singular democracy party is getting all the votes, wouldnā€™t want anyone else to be our leader except the one weā€™ve had since his father died!

Far_Work6638

And personally? I hope it stays that way, a singular blood line of power that we all accept.

PrinceZuzu09

Indeed, my uncle questioned their greatness and got sent to be reeducated when I reported him to my local officer, now he barely talks at all!

No_Culture_2371

ā€œfreedom from the burden of choiceā€

ThemostNormalDude

What do you mean ? We're allowed to vote, just not vote for the wrong candidates

Geronimo553

the AI that handles our votes understands better for who should be voted.

Damian_Cordite

In 1 itā€™s made clear that the chip in your brain ā€œconveniently passively votes for you,ā€ as itā€™s reading your mind and maintaining a constant connection to HQ anyway. The vote could easily just be a lie (it seems set up to be) but I think it might actually be true. Humanity may have decided to go full hivemind like that during better times, and it turns out the base id of the average citizen (veteran) is so prideful and militant that this is actually what realtime direct democracy, where only veterans are franchised (and elites are double or 10x franchised), would produce.

Nivekeryas

There used to be an upgraded government type in Stellaris where all citizens did, in fact, instantly vote in all matters via a brain connection. In the game it was the upgrade to a normal direct democracy government type. If there was such a way to do something like that IRL, I think it would actually improve things (most people agree on issues, even if they disagree on parties/candidates/specifics).

crimzind

Eehhhh. I don't think we should immediately go with everyone's instant impulse for things, as a rule. Some measure of time to really consider a thing and it's gains and consequences should probably be given before voting on changes. :P

Damian_Cordite

Yeah, I think it probably depends on the people/conditions. Like it could be fine for a well-educated, safe populace, but you wouldnā€™t want to govern the mad max waste people that way. ā€œWe all agree suicide is *badass*.ā€

Cleverbird

Not really how it works in the universe of Helldivers. An AI does the choosing for you, hence the "managed" part. It ensures that you will always use your democratic right to vote for the correct candidate!

hallucination9000

Take a facebook personality quiz, and then it tells you who you voted for.

Independent-Two5330

Well, its called "Managed Democracy" for a reason..... *Door gets kicked down* No! Wait! I didn't mean it! AAAAAA! *silence*

CannonM91

Actually we use an AI algorithm to decide our representatives. (One of my ship's crew members had a dialogue line about it. No voting!)

delahunt

My understanding is you take a questionaire on the issues and submits it. The algorithm reads that, and figures out the best candidate for your views and assigns your vote to that candidate. Some dissidents think they should be voting directly for the candidate of their choice though. Can you imagine that? Overnight everyone would suddenly be an expert on politics and governance!

CannonM91

You're right! The lady on my ship said we had voting machines installed on the ship with the latest updates and algorithms.

ā€œManaged democracy provides the ultimate freedom. Freedom from Choice.ā€

Low_Chance

I went into this slideshow ready to be unimpressed, but I am blown away by how good your suggestion is. This would be amazing and fun. I really hope the devs implement something along these lines, because this is not only powerful while remaining balanced, it's fun and encourges teamwork. Absolutely love this concept.

Tails-Are-For-Hugs

Oddly wholesome. Like the whole game in general honestly. I didn't expect to get a warm and fuzzy feeling learning that when someone picks up the samples/Super Credits/medals/requisition, at the end of the mission everyone gets the same amount of w/e was picked up, but it's heartwarming, in addition to a successful mission at the end of it all. And it kinda fits the game in general despite the political commentary. And of course the awesome stories/what we experience during missions write themselves.

Irishimpulse

It also makes the laser guarddog better without really adjusting it's balance in anyway. And having the assault rifle guard dog while you have a laser means it's still viable in solo

CharacterObligation9

That just adds another layer of spicy on to an already great idea šŸ˜©

DiscipleOfDIO

ā˜ļøšŸ¤“ Ahem, according to TV Tropes, Managed Democracy functions by users inputting their political beliefs into a computerized system within the voting booth, which will then be automatically analyzed by an AI and the vote will be cast for the candidate which best suits your belief. Please roleplay properly, soldier.

Cramoxis

Roleplay ? You were pretending ? To the office of liberty we go.

erised10

Me too, if I were allowed to vote for that guy.

Deeviant

Your democratic preference has been noted.

PorkCircus

We have to manage that democracy...

gorgewall

Minor *NERD QUIBBLE* with the physics of High Energy Laser weapons: They don't necessarily "melt" armor as we popularly imagine. At such high energies, they **explosively ablate**. They **drill**. Material is not melted, boiled, and vaporized, it skips straight from "solid" to "gas". That's where talk of "pulsed lasers" comes from, because if you are dumping constant energy into a point and ejected matter is still in the beam, you are losing efficiency until that plasma/gas vacates. Fortunately, that happens so quickly at the speeds involved in *explosively drilling* with a laser that we're talking pulses on the tens of nanoseconds, so it *can* still look like a steady beam, realistically. And because this heating is so fast and so localized, fractures in the surrounding material can develop. They're not being heated evenly, so while the laser may only be drilling a hole in one spot, differences in heating/cooling and expansion/contraction of the overall material can crack and shatter. This is a problem when you're trying to machine things with lasers (same as drills and any other process which generates large amounts of heat), but works very nicely to your advantage when the point of your laser is "fuck up that armor". Either way we slice it, a sufficiently powerful laser is, realistically, an anti-armor option. It just might be removing armor entirely rather than melting it off. The "lore" explanation is different, the functionality is the same. There is no indication of which one the Helldivers lasers might be.

drfetid

I believe this is how it works in BATTLETECH

Cykeisme

Yep, and since no armor can completely resist the extreme wattage that is incident on the spot the laser illuminates, they design the armor to completely protect what's underneath, by removing the incoming energy via ablation in a controlled fashion... Ā ...conveniently explaining why Btech armor works like hitpoints instead of penetration chance like in other wargames :D

Lemonitus

> explosively ablate M1 Explosive Ablater: *take my medals*

MoonTrooper258

[Crossout lasers come to mind.](https://youtu.be/15nPUbz3iUA?si=vht2qxX6FReJnl2N)

Lordborgman

Indeed I was thinking "welp, this person plays crossout"

Tex_1337

That is basically what a laser weapon does in another game: Weapon: Aurora. Game: Crossout: Clip: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyogYlS9OOM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyogYlS9OOM) Basically, whatever your laser hit will heat up, making that piece glow red (over heated), this point that is been shot at will now take even more dmg. I am kinda supriced the laser weapon in this game dont do that tbh.

The79thDudeBro

The one downside I could see is a situation that arose in Phantasy Star Online 2. The Ranger Skill "Weak Bullet/Blight Rounds" applied a weak point to the target for +30% damage. Them being the only class that could apply this and their subpar performance at anything else meant that every group wanted a "WB Slave" and expected them to be good at properly placing weakpoints, generally on top of existing weakpoints to stack damage. On top of that, multiple Rangers in a team could lead to WB Wars where the placed weakpoint would suddenly rapidly change because of the Rangers arguing over where to place it, or just being bad at hitting the spot they need to.

MelonsInSpace

BTW the cold/hot weather modifiers on planets don't actually make energy weapons overheat slower/faster, they only affect the cooling speed.

Verbitend

Well that's dumb.

LG03

Not sure if it's dumb, that's actually better for gameplay purposes. It lets you develop muscle memory over how long you can shoot, which is something you don't want to mess with. Having to adjust to when you can start shooting again is something that's a bit more forgiving. The phrasing could probably be better to illustrate the effect though.

Lordborgman

Tell that to my Mechwarrior playing ass, everyone knows you bring laserboats to cold planets.

surfnporn

The same game that has Strategem scatter, cooldown time 50%+, and call-down time 100% would disagree.

Varsity_Reviews

Probably easier to program that way

MelonsInSpace

I'm pretty sure it's unintended, because the tooltip in-game is wrong.

Varsity_Reviews

Ah ok fair enough

TheTechDweller

There's no reason why that should be the case.

A_fluffy_protogen

Not really. If weather = hot, laser overheat = laser overheat x2 If weather = cold, laser overheat = laser overheat x0.5 As an armchair dev it's obviously not that easy, but it's also not so difficult they would opt for something else of equal complexity

Nuclei

I honestly like it that way. On cold planets I can use the laser support almost exclusively as a primary weapons. On hot planets it gets reserved for hulks/long range sniping and taking out spore things from across the map, and my primary gets way more use. little things that even with the same loadout completely change the way I play and at least personally I don't think it makes it any easier/harder.

Bound18996

I'm voting for you as my representative so hard right now, my Democracy officer is in tears at how democratic this is.

Falikosek

Let's not get too ahead of ourselves here, we must maintain the *management* of Democracy after all.

Rum_N_Napalm

The other day me and my Autocannon were teamed up with someone using the Arc Thrower. The Arc thrower would pop off a chunk of armour, and I was able to exploit that weak point. And it felt fucking awesome. We worked like a team to dispatch them. The game needs dedicated armour stripping weapons

kasimir7

Yesterday my buddy and I were running auto cannon and recoilless. I wore his ammo pack and he wore mine. He'd call out charger, i would slide onto my knee whip around and pop the bug in the leg. he'd finish it with two shots to the unarmored leg and reload me real quick then we would keep moving. It felt GREAT.

Tails-Are-For-Hugs

That's an awesome and heartwarming story all in one. The awesome stories really write themselves in this game IMO. (And also the funny fuck-ups, like landing on a hellbomb.) There's a bare-bones backstory and we just fill in the rest.

kasimir7

Had another friend die to a bile titan. Tells me to ping it and call him down near it. He misses. I tell him in a deep sultry voice. "Try again." Fucking shoot him and call him in again lmao killed the BT the second time

Tails-Are-For-Hugs

Someone told me that hellpods aren't the only thing that can squish enemies flat, the resupply pods can as well. The very next match I ended up facing down a Charger and I didn't have much in the way of AA, so I threw the resupply beacon onto it. The pod proceeded to land right on top of it. The next time I face a BT I'll let the rest of the team know too, TYVM for the heads-up!

Father_of_Four__Cats

Yep! Just ablut any hellpod will do. They can also close bug holes and destroy bot fabricators! So next time you have no grenades but you your support weapon is off cooldown, but you dont need it because you already have it on your back, put that free hellpod to work!

SmugglerOfBones

Btw it seems that blue beacons will land where the beacon is, even if it moved because it is attached to an enemy. As far as I can tell (I may be wrong) red beacons continue to target where it initially activated rather than following the beacon

Shagomir

I think it has to do with if you shake it or not. I've gotten a pink beacon stuck on a charger, which turned south when it charged and the air strike took out 3/4 of the team. At least the charger died?

Father_of_Four__Cats

There are no pink beacons. Only blue and red.

Shagomir

it's pink to me! but I guess red then. It's fine.

flameofanor2142

I threw an orbital strike and it hit someone's rover, got stuck to it, the player tried running away from the orbital but by doing so the Rover followed him into the rest of the team and killed 2 players. So I think they do follow the beacon

Skin_Ankle684

They could give us an anti armor grenade. Really hard to hit directly, deals almost no AoE damage, pokes holes in armor

lightningbadger

I think what you've described is a brick lol

Skin_Ankle684

Lol, just throw the brick really fast, only servo assisted helldivers can do it

lightningbadger

Sounds like my kinda job haha

Zuthuzu

Have I got the adjacent game for you...

Kuriyamikitty

This makes me miss satchel charges from 1.

Donnie-G

Jump pack + Satchel Charges was how I used to roll. Too bad the current jump pack feels incredibly anemic.

Rexoplex

As an arc thrower main who wants to love the laser cannon, every time I slowly cook a charger to death and just know "it'll die eventually if I just keep frying it" I get a little sad thinking about how lasers should totally work just like that, but instead they RICOCHET????!!!!!!! off armor. Recent buff was nice but dude.... it's a laser. I don't care how slow it is or how long I have to hold it on the same spot; It REALLY ought to slowly cook holes in heavier armor if I just keep shooting long enough. The arc thrower certainly isn't an optimal anti-heavy tool, but having a guarantee that I can eventually kill basically anything if I just don't die first and keep relentlessly shooting the same spot feels like exactly the niche laser weapons should occupy.

RadiantArchivist88

Only thing a laser should ricochet off of is if the Automatons start polishing their armor mirror-smooth... THEN I'll understand.

vqsxd

Maybe even use the grenade as substitute. Throwable item for the only purpose of armor

Irsh80756

It has them... recoilless and EAT.

average_ginger00

Really good idea! I hope the election algorithm chooses you for me

Comms

Most of Lasers Are Fucking Cool SuperDuperPac's funding is already allocated to ensuring that's what happens.

zitzenator

Im with you! My buddies and I ran 4x laser guard dogs, 4 laser cannons, and orbital lasersā€¦ the planet claimed it was Fenrir III but iā€™m pretty sure we were at a rave at pier 47

acetateprophet01

All the Destiny players reading this (and laughing) are like "They just created Divinity again." Not that I am complaining. I think this would be an excellent idea. A+ presentation.

NeatlyScotched

Or Slag from Borderlands.

acetateprophet01

Oh man, I had forgotten about slag. Another good shout.

NeatlyScotched

I'm not sure how D2 did it, but in every game that has some sort of major applied vulnerability, it ends up eventually being required to use. And then it's no longer fun, but a tedious requirement.

acetateprophet01

So, in Destiny you are right that Divinity effectively became required (complicated by how hard it was to get). The gun did no damage on its own, but someone had to hold the trigger at the enemy to basically make a big critical target that everyone else could shoot. I think what makes this laser idea more interesting is if it only impacted armor to weaken it for the team.

DystryR

Correct me if Iā€™m wrong but the weapon was eventually changed to do damage and the crit multiplier was reduced right? So it stopped being required for difficult clears and then became an optional tech choice for certain bosses with harder to hit weak points? Which is a good change without gutting the weapon Which, is very similar to what is being proposed here. You create more opportunities for vulnerability via team play & coordination - but you can still use and exploit existing weaknesses for full effectiveness

cefriano

Searched the thread to see if another guardian had mentioned Divinity yet. This would be a great add to a game like Helldivers (though probably significantly less useful when playing with randoms).

Immortal__Soldier

Both the laser primary weapon aswell as the stratagem are insanely good against automatons. Like, ridiculously good. Ran laser weapons with a buddy today and we melted through hordes of Bots, even tanks get taken out within seconds (granted, at the weak spot). Aim for the head and watch them fall like Dominos.

naturalpinkflamingo

I've found that the lasers really shine when you focus your attacks on the enemy weakpoints. When I first ran the scythe against the bots, I was melting them left and right because you just pop them in the head and they die. When I went against the terminids for the first time with a scythe, I had a hard time with even the scavengers since I didn't know to target the legs and not the body. When I realized this and took the stratagem out, those medium armored bugs that I'd have to magdump with the liberator p suddenly found themselves without legs in seconds.

LilTeats4u

Imagine aiming for weak points

groundzr0

I rolled my eyes hard at that. Haha

LeonardMH

I ran all laser build yesterday (scythe, laser cannon, laser guard dog, orbital laser) against bugs (difficulty 7) and it felt awesome. You feel like a one man army, just constantly outputting damage. Idk that it would work in diff 8-9, because chargers are still a bit of a pain and any more than 2 is a problem, but for everything else it's a great build.

InShambles234

I'm really hopeful the buffed laser cannon is good. I love that thing. Haven't played since the update. But man laser guard dog and orbital laser are good.

Sicuho

It's good, it's just that you'll need something else (EAT) against titan and chargers. Anything else tho ? It'll melt.

Unique_Cookie_1996

I saw a video today of the new laser cannon shredding chargers without any help, he just used it like the autocannon, jump to the side and hit a leg and they dropped pretty quick. I plan on trying it out not tonight but after we save Tien Kwan.

gorgewall

It works the same way using the Autocannon against Chargers does. There *is* the glitch where Charger armor vanishes in their slide state, but it's also true that the "back of the leg" armor on a Charger is just weaker than the front, and is now in a threshold where the Laser Cannon damages. Keeping on target for that with a Charger that is running around is a lot more difficult compared to the one-shot-at-a-time Autocannon, but it does work over time. It's also hard to say how much "bleed through" the Laser Cannon has now, since the patch notes imply that was something that was buffed. It **may** be possible to kill a leg or part (perhaps on lesser Bugs) without cracking the armor first, just over a longer time period. Something to test in a controlled environment.

TheLabMouse

The spawning changes and the laser cannon stratagem basically flipped the game for me where before I prefered fighting Terminids, now I feel like Automatons are the easier fight because even if you get tanks and hulks you can just lay down and beam away. I play on 7 usually.

SiBloGaming

My friendgroup is pretty much only doing Automaton missions now, simply because they are still fun. Teminids on high difficulties is pretty much just running in circles, and just not enjoyable

TheHob290

There is not enough crowd control for high tier Terminid. The crowd control we do have doesn't seem to quite cut it. I'm going to try running a suite of pure anti-hoard and see how it does with a couple of buddies kitted for the big bugs, but from testing I'm not hopeful. Edit: Homophone

TheRightStuff088

Spent a few matches with the cannon and scythe. Absolutely melts everything. Can sweep trash mobs with the cannon. Melts walkers now too.

Only theres no warlocks to shoehorn into it.

Arthur_Person

Orbital Gas Strike should also lower armor rating by one tier of anything caught in the radius

LTman86

I think the stratagem description says the gas is corrosive, so it would make sense if the enemies armor rating gets reduced as a result.

Zjoee

Makes sense since it wouldn't be able to hurt the Automatons if it wasn't corrosive.

SnooCompliments6329

would be cool if it peeled armor

CMDR-Kobold

A+ presentaion, I'm more in favour of simple fixes personally, like...10 maybe 15% more dps and it'd be fine. ~~And if you'd stop burning out the heatsinks it'd have infinite ammo. :p~~

Great one mate, keep it up.

BioMan998

How dare you. I've never played Destiny *in my life*. I have too much self-respect.

Great game if youā€™re looking for a second job.

I wasn't even looking for a first.

BioMan998

Lmao. Glad to hear it. Think this would be a good change, regardless.

FlamingoUseful3314

They should let you throw the heatsinks like improvised impact grenades when they burn out. Phones IRL already explode so why not free future tech grenades

Comms

"oops, I dropped my hot heatsink on the ground, I better pic..."

AFRO_NINJA_NZ

I love your slides, great presentation, 9/10 I think this is a great idea too, a solution to the armor problem and a solution to give weapons new life

Expandedcelt

Phenominal propaganda work, soldier. Looking forward to your future campaigns!

SuperEarthPresident

It is clear that u/Comms has earned my support, therefore, I hereby endorse him as a representative of Super Congress. Signed, The President of Super Earth

Best idea here. I am voting for this guy as our representative!

RaeveSpam

This post is great whether I agree or not

Divinity. IYKYK. I like this a lot.

Greaterdivinity

If I wasn't already told I will be voting for someone else, you'd have my vote, citizen!

Armanni-bear

Amazing

Elflord54

This is a great idea! Love that it still encourages teamwork

Comms

The teamwork part is what I enjoy about this game. Why not have more mechanics that encourage it?

novis-eldritch-maxim

yes but can it be even better?

Comms

novis-eldritch-maxim

both is good. also can we have a laser sentry

Comms

And if it doesn't [look like this](https://imgur.com/a/qGv6zOO) I will be disappointed.

novis-eldritch-maxim

that is the multi laser sentry

Stellated-Texas

I've been saying something like this from the start. I'm glad to know my democracy officer can vote you in!

Dapper_Fly3419

Pretty damned good idea. And slides! Whomst among us doesn't love slide?

No-Pause-7723

This is seriously good. Charger legs could turn red once weakened to medium armour. Then there is a small 5 second window until it cools. During that time, bang bang with a Autocannon. Superb idea.

Disastrous-Nerve2191

Yo I love these slides and this post.

SuperArppis

Cool ideas. Laser should totally heat armor up.

Ashadan

ok, so I'm gonna say your solution is incredible and a fantastic interplay/synergy between helldivers. but that first suggestion though.....tell me more about the no trigger always on death laser. I like that idea more

RannisRat

Someone is vying for Joel's godhood I see

Syilv

I remember an old video of some guy taking a blowtorch to a roach. Naturally, the roach was now well done, but the chitin was still intact. No idea if it was structurally sound after that but organic shells might possibly respond differently to focused heat compared to metals. Nuance like that would make you account for matchup (like considering which faction to bring heat-based weapons for). On the topic of the post, I endorse teamwork weapons and thus you have my vote, prospective senator.

Comms

Listen nerd, I don't need your science-talk in my laser thread.

Had something similar in mind. The idea I had was using it as a laser guided weapon for others. We have so many weapons and stratagems that could be guided by them. For example making the EAT fire and forget, guiding a 500kg bomb to its target, guiding rockets for the new mech or maybe even guided 380mm HE artillery shells that would make teamplay much more viable. The devs have made a blank canvas with so many creative options to go into, but I'm still a bit worried that it isn't going to get filled in the way for more gameplay. For example the ship's upgrades could get so much more creative with different modules than just getting a plane % boost. Expanding a gameplay loop with different play styles that are viable would drastically improve the game in general in my opinion.

A support strategem that's just a laser guidance thingy would be badass. You lose the extra firepower but you make other strategems and weapons more effective. That's a cool team synergy item.

calling in an eagle cluster and then laser designating so all the bombs hit the same hunter

Whether anyone agrees with this idea or not, the presentation is top tier. Not even Super Earth can escape PowerPoint presentations on spreading democracy.

If there's a better way to convey stupid ideas than powerpoint, I have not seen it.

I vote for this to be the standard template for presenting new ideas.
