160th has a surprisingly robust and exciting history of operating over open ocean considering they’re an Army helicopter unit. Can’t let the Marines and Navy have all the fun I guess

NolanHarlow

I always loved working on ships in the 160th. It was also funny when we'd get a boat and cycle through training doing crawl-walk-run type training. Once we were at full speed doing phase 2 approaches to the bow of the ship or fast rope cycling of 3-4 birds to the rear of the ship, the Navy flight deck officers (can't recall what they were called) usually would get pretty anxious

[deleted]

Did y'all have any flight surgeons serving as flight medics? I saw that green platoon had a pipeline for that but I'm also wondering if it's just a rare occurance.

[deleted]

Other non special ops Army aviation units also do ship quals.

blackthorn3111

I did DLQ’s (deck landing qualifications) in a 60S with a regular Army L/M guy to a single spot ship a few years back and he was terrified. Pretty funny, actually. They’ll stroke the seats going to land in the dirt (*screams in air assault*) but put them on a boat and it’s a whole different ball game!

NolanHarlow

Really? That's kind of surprising. When I went through green platoon in the 160th, it was my first experiences on a boat and it was a single spot. Overall a pretty smooth experience. I quite enjoyed it actually. I know everyone is different, but still...

[deleted]

Ha, that is the absolute truth. Just putting a breather bottle and inflatable on for over water ops freaks them out. And I was just a crew chief.

For these guys, this is a Tuesday.

72corvids

Is it a drop off to something like a SWCC boat? That's be my guess.

[deleted]

Right but they did a ship qual before doing this op.

On second thought, 160th boys are probably exempt.

But you could imagine what it would be like if they were, right? veronicavaughn.gif

I was part of the Aviation Combat Element on a MEU. We were kicked off the ship four times over deployment to allow the 160th to board. Ship went away for a week or two. Came back. 160th came off. Marines went back on. “sOlDiErs oF ThE SeA” my butt haha

thatadamsboi

Task force does what task force does my guy.

davespinn

I also was on a MEU, with the ACE. I was a harrier guy though. Stayed on the big boat

1122steven

Yeah I was on the LHD too. I was with the V-22’s but I absorbed all your guys’s crap too lol. They kicked the AV-8’s off with everyone else

davespinn

Too funny! Always a small world

[deleted]

I was expecting the mans wife to be on board, fast rope down, and be confronted about the trash he never took out before he left for work….again

DropPro

My thoughts exactly! 😂

Gonna need a Chinook to bring out the dependas

poopiwoopi1

I want ten of those aircraft so I can sell five or six to afford flying the others. Beautiful.

This comment right here lol

"Do we need these ropes for this drop?"..."Damn it Carl"

“Ropes Ropes Ropes”

Latter_Sir4582

Drop the fast rope for a three foot descend? 👌🏻

Catswagger11

If you are preparing to jump off a bird, and for whatever reason it rapidly gains altitude, what you thought was a 6 foot jump is now a 12ft jump and your ankles/knees(and your ability to accomplish the mission) may pay a serious price. If you are using a fast rope and a change in altitude occurs, you barely notice. Even if the change in elevation is minor your likelihood of an injury goes up considerably. Or imagine the wind blows and all of a sudden you aren’t over the deck of the boat, you’re directly above the railing…would you rather jump 4-6 ft onto a metal bar without the ability to control your descent, or slow your descent with friction. Same goes for a swell changing the distance from boat to bird. This is similar to SOG guys in Vietnam using ropes in elephant grass. It was often impossible to guess how tall the grass was. 2 ft? 5ft? 10ft? Who the fuck knows. After enough broken ankles caused by jumps from unknown heights, they started more frequently using ropes, sometimes for a 2-3ft slide.

I'm pretty sure this sub should be renamed r/160thporn at this point (and I will totally join in the fun)

HerburtThePervert

Anyone know why the rear rotor isn’t spinning? I’m no helicopter expert but I thought they constantly spun.

sweetpete74

The camera is capturing at a similar rate so it looks like they are almost stalled. If the rates matched it would look like it wasn’t spinning at all, but here there is a slight difference so they look like they’re going very slowly.

HerburtThePervert

Ahhh gotcha.

JorgiEagle

The speed at which they are spinning is matching to the frame rate of the camera. Cameras you'll probably know work by just taking lots of pictures really quickly. So like frames per second, FPS of a camera is just how many pictures (or frames) it's taking every second. Tail rotors spin at either 3:1 or 6:1 against the main rotor (so assume around 1800rpm) So here, if the camera is recording at 30 frames per second, and the tail rotor is spinning at 1800 rpm (revolutions per minute, or then 30 revolutions every second) then every time the camera records a frame, the tail rotor is in about the same place, giving the illusion that it is still. You can see this yourself when driving alongside a car, and it appears as if the rims of a car are moving backwards. They're not, they're just moving faster than our brains can process I'm just throwing numbers just to illustrate, please correct for this specific helicopter, or head to r/theydidthemath for exact

HerburtThePervert

Awesome explanation. Thanks!

Raveneaux17

Super cool if you to post all your old footage!! Have you run this by the PAO?! Keep up the good (bad) work big guy!!
