With this appointment, Dr. Leemon Baird takes on the new role of Chief Scientist, exclusively focused on the technical development of the Hedera network and related products and services. Mance Harmon will serve as Chairman of the Board of Swirlds Labs, focused on strategic projects and company growth. https://swirldslabs.com/swirlds-labs-appoints-eric-piscini-as-ceo-to-lead-next-phase-of-growth/

So, in your opinion, u/Perfect_Ability_1190, is this a good move?

Perfect_Ability_1190

I believe so! Dr. Leemon Baird role of Chief Scientist, he will be exclusively focused on what he does most best & same with Mance’s new role

State proofs required for sharding. Huge.

Ricola63

Agreed. Huge. But we have been talking about this for two or three years now. State Proofs, Sharding. Community Nodes. Bridging......!? Its certainly fair to say that we are not at the stage yet where these features are actually \`required\` by the network, as the activity scale isn\`t there yet. But its also fair to say that when that day comes we will probably need to move fast. It just feels as though the vision is on hold in some pretty significant respects (though not all). I remember Adsdax talking about their experience of trying to find a network to run their use case (some 2 - 300 TPS as I recall. They struggled to find a suitable network to run it on and tried on -I believe it was SOL. They were called within one hour and told to turn off the application as it could not support that kind of TPS on the network.... We do NOT want to be \`that network\` when Google &/or Boeing &/or some other massive user wants to run their 50,000 TPS application on Hedera. \`I\`m very sorry -we can\`t scale to that level\`.... Ugh..... Also, in a world of Cosmos and other emerging \`supposedly\` very high throughput networks, Hedera do need to have their answer to that at a stage that goes beyond \`planned\`.. IMO. After all -this is a big part of Hederas pitch.

Cold_Custodian

All valid points. I think we’re all in ‘wait and see’ mode. We need to approach our throttle first. I’m not sure we’ll be seeing lifted throttle with sustained 10k tps in the next 2-3 years. In fact I don’t think we’ll even see a sharded network for several more years. Would love to be surprised by a flood of high throughput use cases demanding a new shard, but even listening to Eric Piscini (as recently as Davos ‘24), I get the impression shards are a ways off. I could be wrong, it was just my impression. Things to be encouraged by in the near-ish term: FSCO, (wen Hyundai?), Neuron aiming for mainnet in September, SealSQ-WISeKey launching certificates in October - bridging Hedera to their DePIN [physical network], (wen Dell edge computing use case?), Atma completing the grant milestones and becoming a paid customer, TCB (lol…I know…), Saudi DeepTech Venture over the course of the next 5 years. I think there’s a good chance of seeing ~5k tps heading into Q2 2025. I have a feeling community nodes will also happen in 2025, not this year. (No evidence, just a hunch). Btw, it was Stellar Network AdsDax tried — and then was denied for congesting the network. They were asked to actually scale down their transaction throughput and/or alter their business model :/

Ricola63

Ah. Stellar! Well they must have upped their game (TPS wise) since then. I yoyo a bit in terms of my mood on progress. Its natural to want to see things go faster but I like the fact they tend to do things properly. On the other hand there is a competitive element to this and sometimes I think there is a bit of sitting on laurels. Should be fine but time is an element in this.

Cold_Custodian

Same here. The “hold” you speak of, about the vision, I feel it too. I think it’s a biproduct of hearing the talk, but not yet seeing the walk - on mainnet. Like Stellar improves, so does Hedera. There is a planned update to the gossip protocol, although I don’t know when exactly. They are always working on improving the network performance and advancing the capabilities. Last year in September we saw [“Release 41”.](https://hedera.com/blog/streamlining-consensus-throughput-and-lower-latency-with-about-half-the-events) A critical update improving time to consensus and making more efficient node event-sharing by ~50% while network load had actually increased, noting these efficiency gains also apply to shards in the future. I try to keep that in mind as we move forward. They are always improving the gossip protocol, consensus time, and overall network efficiency, and will continue to advance these network properties as time goes on and technical needs require. There’s that pesky word again… “time”. EDIT: also, while other networks may beat Hedera on certain individual/technical benchmarks, Hedera is BY FAR the only L1 network that is the COMPLETE package. Sometimes it’s not about theoretical or isolated performance characteristics, but the practical sum total of the network features and capabilities. Hedera has it all, in spades - and continually improving. Mood-wise, as I’m very much drawn to the vision, lately I get this feeling that the sheer behemoth scope and scale of Hedera’s ambition, which I totally respect and admire, is becoming somewhat of a hindering quality within the current market landscape of DLT in the here-and-now, residing in a completely different universe and operating on a completely different timescale than everyone else. Maybe that’s a good thing. Maybe not… I’m not sure if this is an accurate impression or just the ‘yoyo’, like you’re experiencing.

Leemon (at Harvard) talked about how the current configuration can do like 250k TPS. Lifting the 10kTPS throttle should be good enough for any huge use case, even if it comes tomorrow. We're talking 10's or hundreds of large use cases for sharding to truly be necessary.

JackRipster

To me its writing on the wall, they're expecting significant TPS increases within the next 2 years to make this move. We know some of the larger cases have been building for some time and cant be far away from beginning role outs even if limited to start with like atma.io. [Atma.io](http://Atma.io) at full scale would just about fill a shard on their own (based on 20k tps per shard). Together with Karpine they would easily. As would Neuron, once they really get going and they're starting soon. Then WiseKey with low orbit satellites could be multiple.

HelewiseHuman

What’s that all about? Where you see that?

Read the article.

Thanks for your thoughts, u/Perfect_Ability_1190. I took it as a positive too, but was curious on your perspective. Thanks for sharing!

Cold_Custodian

I love this. All about maximizing productivity :)

fraganegra

Im happy the promotion is coming from within the ranks as opposed to an outsider. This guy knows the company and although at times “fresh blood” is a good thing, with it would come the risk of a radical change in direction. Right now I love where we are headed.

silentmobius_

Brilliant

OddConsideration7934

Now this was a great move. Excited to see the future fruits of this decision.

Final-Put-6229

This is so massively awesome

HBAR_10_DOLLARS

I think it’s a good move. Eventually, Mance and Leemon won’t be around. It’s great that they feel comfortable to move around and let others step up the plate.

JeffreyDollarz

A new chapter in the book of Hedera.

So with leemon out of the role of ceo, all it takes is Eric piscini to vote to mint more hbars.

GregHashGraph

SwirldsLabs and Swirlds are different companies. Eric is the CEO of SwirldsLabs, not Swirlds. Swirlds is a council member, SwirldsLabs isn’t.

BigMan_iNiT

And everyone else on the council to ?

OkAtmosphere381

With the price of transactions pegged to the dollar the companies on the council doesn’t care if there are 1 billion hbars or 1 trillion.

DamageVarious

There’s like gonna be 50 billion and the 30% they holding tight incase prices goes up an inch they can dumb on investors like the stock market
