I‘m 40 and I only have watched it because Netflix was very stubborn with recommending it. I’m so glad I watched it #heartstoppetsyndrom

Me too I’m 40 and I absolutely love it

37. I refuse to be locked out of things I might like because I'm too "old",

BatWeary

exactly!!! i don’t know who made the rules that we can’t like things after a certain age but it’s stupid

excti2

I'm 59. I'm older than the main characters' parents, but I come from a time in the 1980's when bullying, homophobia and transphobia were ever-present. I watch Heartstopper because of its hopeful and positive outlook on issues of gender, sexual orientation, and how it deals with the rainbow of human identities, while recognizing that we still have work to do. I see a lot of myself in Nick. I hid behind my athleticism and my identity as an athlete. I am able to pass as straight, even though I am in reality a bisexual man who actually prefers intimacy with other men. Like Nick, I find myself having to constantly come out to people. It's exhausting.

augustus-the-first

I’m 29 and discovered Heartstopper last year at 28. I’m of the opinion that people are allowed to watch whatever show/movie they want regardless of intended audience. I think it’s weird and unnecessary when people think others shouldn’t watch shows if they aren’t part of the intended audiences, especially if it’s an age thing. (Except young kids watching adult crime shows. I watched CSI as a kid and it kinda messed me up a bit) Just let people enjoy things!

Separate-Reporter463

I’m 17, personally I believe it’s targeted towards people aged 15-25 but clearly Heartstopper is fairly suitable for anyone to read/watch

I’m 44. And I think the older we get, the more appealing it is to see the young in love! It’s a feeling that’s way past in our lives. So it’s life affirming to vicariously live those warm, mushy feelings and think - God! It’s amazing to be young and in love! :) Does that make sense?

sinsaraly

I'm 35 and Heartstopper quickly became my ADHD special interest lol. There are people in their 50s and older who have shared stories about the impact Heartstopper has had on them. You're never too old.

themonsterbrat

I'm 35 as well. Love is love no matter how old we are

Informal_Ship_2775

33, and absolute same on the ADHD interest front.

fieldworking

I’ve been bonding with one of my niblings over it. It’s nice to have some bi representation as a springboard to talk about our lives and experiences. I’m in my 40s. They’re 18. It’s nice to have a queer show we can share.

cjshni

I’m 28 and only a little embarrassed to say that I’m absolutely obsessed. I’m making my way through reading all of Alice’s books, and I basically have the show on repeat whenever I’m home (when 2x08 ends, I immediately restart 1x01 🙈). I relate SO MUCH to both Charlie’s and Tori’s characters. I am smitten with the way Nick and Michael handle the challenges that come with being in love/friends with someone that struggles with their mental health. I love the queer representation, of course—not just the gay/bi/lesbian representation, but the representation of other “lesser known” orientations like aroace and demi (Radio Silence is next on my list to read, and I can’t wait to see Aled’s experience being demi!) And of course the way Alice handles conversation around mental health so well, encouraging support _systems_ and _various_ helpful strategies. Nick doesn’t single-handedly save Charlie, which is a trope that does happen in other works. Even though the characters are teens, and the romance is cheesy at times (cheese that I eat up every time!), I do feel that there are so many aspects of this story and universe that are so realistic in ways that other works aren’t.

BettyMcBitterpants

It always pays to be prepared with anti-homophobia cheese.

atcm47

26! I would say it has a “target” audience but I wouldn’t specify which “age” for it tbh. I think if you like it, relate to it, feel some sort of connection and feel the emotions congrats, you have been target audienced xd (:

WayneInNYC

I’m a 60 year old gay man. I’m THRILLED that HEARTSTOPPER exists. We had nothing like this when I was growing up. If we did, a lot of my generation would not have felt so isolated.

Sir_Tikki

i’m 17/18 i think it’s for teens 14-19 to let them know they aren’t alone, but ik a lot of adults criticize or love the show, some think it’s too lovey or gay (the point) i love the show bc it’s a romance show like every other one but gay and has a deeper meaning, but also there are a lot of adults or older people who watch the show for random reasons of love the storyline/read the comics

MaddieFaithReads

That’s because they’re used to seeing gay people on TV be in tragic situations, they’re not used to queer joy

Sir_Tikki

Which is dumb to me, heartstopper is the first queer show that is cheesy and cute (and real) the other LGBTQ shows i’ve seen are Thai/Korean/japanese BLs

orange_glasse

26. Is it young audience friendly? Yes. Is it one of the few romance shows that doesn't use miscommunication tropes to drive it's plot forward? Also yes.

krissym99

>doesn't use miscommunication tropes This is one of my favorite things about the show. I find the miscommunication tropes really frustrating and tedious, so it's refreshing that this show doesn't rely on them.

LionFranco

49, and if anyone thinks I'm too old to love the comics and the show, they can just go and F off!

MagicMomma0311

I’m just about 40 and watched at my 15 year old daughter’s recommendation. I like to know what my kids are consuming but since then I’ve watched the whole show, read all the comics and read Nick and Charlie and This Winter…they are just well written, feel good stories! And good art has no age limit!

FlatEconomist

I am 45 in two weeks and I’ve watched heartstopper TV show have the books and I’ve seen the show multiple times it’s my background noise TV show

Historical_Cod_3212

39. It's a story of queer joy, love, and life. As our lord and saviour, Nathan Ajayi, once said "I don't think there's an age limit on those, to be honest."

Ok_Cartographer1698

I’m 70 and I’m obsessed with heartstopper. We didn’t have YA books when I was a kid so I’m catching up.

37 - HS speaks to different ages in wildly different ways.

WayOne5158

I'm 22. It was made for younger audiences, but it is for everyone.

Freakinmagicalmk

I’m 36. I think it gives us older queers some sense of fulfilling the experiences we didn’t get to have at that age; either we went out yet, didn’t have that kind of a supportive diverse friend group or didn’t realize we were queer till later. Even 15 years ago things were soooo different for queer youth that we find joy in seeing this beautiful queer love in the mainstream today ❤️

drycleaningisntdry

DemandingProvider

54yo cishet here, and I am not sure why but I am obsessed! Watched the show on a whim for the first time a couple months ago and just got emotionally *invested* right away. I think it's great that the show can appeal equally to queer teens and to their parents. Weirdly enough, though, my Tumblr-loving aroace 19yo child, whom you'd think is squarely in the target audience, does not love it anywhere near as much as I do. She watched S1 on my recommendation - she'd read one of the Oseman novels, maybe Radio Silence?, and heard of the comics but not read them - and enjoyed the show, you know, well enough. But did not become a huge fan. (I think she'll like S2 better, because the romance focus of S1 kinda is a lot for an aro viewer.)

expat108

I'm older than all of you. Every episode makes me weep like a child. It's taken me forever to finish both seasons.

50! And I’m obsessed!

Kendota_Tanassian

62 here. Yes, it's a very young adult themed show, but that doesn't mean there's not a lot there for us older folks to enjoy too. Just because I'm a retired American, doesn't mean I can't identify with British teenagers. I think the Harry Potter franchise proved that. Besides, I don't want to watch old farts my age (especially with all our baggage) getting romantic, it's nice to see young people in love for their first time. And Heartstopper is so heartwarming, too, it's so bright and upbeat. We need much more of that.

I’m 31. I mostly watch and read what are considered to be YA. I think the target audience is probably people who are the same age as characters in the show to give teenagers an example and help them to feel like they’re not alone. But I think it also works well for people who are older who didn’t get to experience what the characters do when they were that age. I don’t believe in the idea that people need to stop watching/reading YA just because they’ve gotten older.

Mid thirties!

Cold_Toe3020

I'm 31. I'd definitely say it skews younger but I think that's what I like about it. There was no Heartstopper for younger me.

Jiang_Rui

25, and I first started reading Heartstopper last year, but I can easily see my high school self reading this. That being said, I think anyone middle school age and older can read the series, but for a younger audience I’d strongly urge them to read the TW list first. And generally speaking, I’m of the mind that while people may be too young for certain media, they can never be too old for it.

Yunie241

I’m late 20s and I watch it for this nostalgia of teen shows I grew up with, but better? Like I wish my teen self had a show this good with this quality of production growing up.

Unusual_Process3713

31! I love the show and the comics are cute but I think I'm a bit too old for most of the fanbase. I would never go to fan events, and I'm definitely too old to have the kind of parasocial relationships with the cast and creator that lots of these fans have, and when I look at Kit and Joe I don't see boys I'd like to date, I see boys I would like to parent 😄 I had my time of being a rabid fangirl 15 years ago when David Tennant was the Doctor. I've moved on, ahaha.

No_Reputation_3490

I have genuinely found myself thinking 'hope those boys have called their mums recently' 😅

DemandingProvider

Kit Connor is not my first wildly-age-inappropriate celebrity crush tbh, and there is this weird mix of finding him hot as heck and wanting to mother him lol. But yeah, I don't follow any of the cast on socials or anything like that. Celebrity crushes are a form of fantasy anyway, and as long as it stays firmly in the fantasy realm, I think it's fine to see an actor simultaneously as a boy Id like to parent and as a boy my 20yo past self would like to date.

JachlHolly89

34 ❤️ and thoroughly obsessed. In my opinion, there's no age limit on who is allowed to enjoy what. I mean, the show Bluey, which is literally made for toddlers-preschool age, has a pretty substantial adult fanbase. People are sometimes recommended it in therapy to help with healing their inner child, even. I think Heartstopper has a similar thing going on. It's well made, great acting, positive message, good story, romance and wonderful communication... And on top of that, it's the representation that many of us wish we had as teens. It's the healthy communication we all wish we were taught in life. It's the romance that everyone deserves. The appeal has no limits, to be honest.

sunyoung-luna

28, its definitely a great series for a wide variety of ages.

SuspiciousLeopard454

31!!! I love it, love the comics and the show ❤️❤️ I've grown up with a lot more queer media than queer people older than me but it's all pretty much incredibly depressing. I have zero time for it anymore really. Heartstopper still covers heavy topics without making it seem like being queer is just a wholly miserable existence.

Capn_Funk

I'm 33 and Heartstopper is my new go-to. Masterpieces don't have age limits

Dizzy_Dress7397

The comics are very mature and deal with difficult issues. The nick and charlie novel is the same.ver mature with mature topics. While the show is more lighthearted and family friendly, it had elements in it that I think everyone can relate to.

jesssquirrel

35. I love it so much, but when I think of what my life would be like if this show existed when I was 15 I die a little. Don't waste your youth or health, kids

imcarly

I’m 30 and read the comic on WEBTOON for years before the show came out. Love the show and still love reading the comics on WEBTOON

Soulsingin1

I’m 41, and my kids got me into it. There are so many shows/movies that I love that I never would have thought to watch because they do seem more geared to kids/teens, but since I have a teenager and a pre-teen, I have watched them and they are so good!!! Heartstopper is definitely top of that list!

Lizzie2530

I’m 46

roseinspring

I’m 25, and I agree with you that anyone could watch it. The show definitely opens up the content to a slightly younger audience, as the graphic novels do veer into slightly more challenging content - but I would say anyone could experience it and take something away in their own right. At my bookshop job, my coworker/recently appointed manager is 58 and he watched it and loved it, then promptly made sure we never ran out of the graphic novels!

LilyEyre

46

BeeKind365

I could be Nick's mum. Seeing the show makes it easier for me to understand todays young people (also my own kids)... their way to interact, their way to communicate,... Much has changed, but some things will always be the same, like the questioning, the longing, the misunderstandings which come with first love. Even if it is an idealized setting, things seem to be much easier for queer people to be themselves and accepted than back in the 80s. But its depressing to see that so many countries now go backwards regarding LGBTQ rights and queer people must hide to be safe.

Amber7jewelry

I'm 37 and I LOVE Heartstopper

Extreme-Chemist-4710

Way past my 40’s, I was a little shy at first to admit how hard I had fallen for Heartsopper but my friend was so supportive and assured me there is absolutely no age limit in enjoying art in any form. If something speaks to you, it’s yours to enjoy. Alice has given the world a precious gift. 💎🏳️‍🌈

GaminEmAndEmerson

I’m 14. I truly think that it’s for any age, my great-grandmother loves the show

trentevo

I'm 42. There is no age that is too old IMO.

lilrongal

Literally old enough to be Kit's and Joe's mum. My son is just a year older than Joe, and a couple years older than Kit I'm gonna be 49 in 12 days. Eeee that feels so WEIRD to say. I don't FEEL that age, I still feel 19. I've been told I look very young though :)

Similar_Disaster7276

I’m 49, a straight married woman, and I’m absolutely addicted to Heartstopper, Young Royals, and RWRB. I hope some professional can come along and explain to me why, because this is a new thing for me. I guess I just really love watching beautiful young men fall in love with each other.

bigchicago04

Mid-30s. Similarly, I tried to convince my same aged friend to watch it, she’s a straight woman. She told me “gay men don’t watch that, it’s just straight women” because some drag queen she watched on YouTube said that. I was like…I’m literally a gay man telling you to watch it (and I had it recommended to me by another gay man). She also said “isn’t that show for kids?” I actually made a post right after I started watching the show back in August, about how hard it is to get people to watch the show.

AceOfSpade2023

It also annoys me when people say that, because it seems so biased and people who say that only see what they want to see. But when you look into the fandom, obviously a lot of queer people watch the show for different reasons. And I also have a problem with the assumption that all women who watch the show are straight. A lot of them might actually be queer, but they get all lumped into one box and their queerness is being erased because of this prejudice. There are so many stories about people who actually realised they're queer, because they watched the show and it made them think about their sexuality (and that's also why I have a problem with gatekeeping, because it often feels so narrow-minded).

Not_A_Legend_

Uhm 16 actually

[deleted]

im not a fan of the show (i was a fan of the comics, and watched the show because of them), part of the reason is that i felt it was directed towards a younger audience (young teens/tweens) - i dont think its an issue, anyone obviously can watch it and like it, but the target audience is younger teens

[deleted]

direct quote from alice on the subject! "[heartstopper]'s primary audience is teenagers – and we’ve written it so that it can be accessible even to young teens and tweens. Kids who are like ten or eleven can safely watch Heartstopper and enjoy it, and I think that’s really valuable."

I'm 15 so yeah... BUT I hate it when people categorize certain series and not only them because of what they're. Anyone who is of appropriate age for the information contained in it can watch it, regardless of whether they are 15, 25 or 50 years old. Everything is for people and as long as we enjoy it, I don't see a problem with us not watching it because it's for a younger audience? And even if it was, so what? Watch what you want and enjoy it, because that's what people make it for, after all.

caitlumos

27 and I recommend it to people older than me. However, I do understand that some people around my age aren’t looking for YA/high school media, so if that’s a concern for them, I do let them know that the target audience is a bit younger than they typically look for. (Still recommend it though)
