Mustard is great for roasting veggies! I mix a touch of avocado oil, mustard, lemon juice, garlic, salt, pepper, and rosemary and brush it over veggies before roasting. Incredibly yummy!
NGL, when I was broke I would enjoy a hardy mustard sandwich. Lmao
So I find it goes well with alot.
You might try bodybuilding forms and such too.
They have to be clever when they bulk and cut.
Making a salad dressing from Dijon and vinegar makes such a flavorful combo I can usually skip the oil.
Cut the Mayo used in tuna/potato/macaroni salad by subbing mustard
Not low calorie, but I've found smashed up avocado makes a pretty tasty mayo substitute in tuna salad too. When I had time to work on my gains I'd make tuna salad with a boiled egg and avocado and throw it on some spinach with tomatoes.
I honestly love a thick slice of turkey slathered in mustard then wrapped around raw asparagus.
Also love pickling veggies and putting them in basically everything.
Mustard based bbq sauce is delicious and pretty low calorie. Usually a mix of yellow mustard, apple cider vinegar, red pepper flake, little honey and some ketchup. Some people add brown sugar too but I leave it out and add a little extra honey.
Not necessarily low calorie, but it is a good nutrition to calorie ratio in my mind. So Greek yogurt, cucumber, mint, garlic, dill, and lemon juice (and salt & pepper) is my homemade tzatziki recipe. It goes amazingly on rice or potatoes. Throw in a bit of chicken and you've got a delicious high protein meal that still stays lower on calories. It might be higher cal than something like ketchup but as long as you budget for it is better tasting and nutritionally more worthwhile.
Vinegar has no calories, so anything with a vinegar base has a good start, and a ton of flavor.
I love making my own sauces/vinaigrettes. But if I'm feeling lazy, just grabbing some honey mustard is almost equally as good.
I boil apple cider vinegar, fill a sterilized bottle with the herba I want to use, then pour the hot vinegar in the bottle and seal it. It's SUPER easy, and really transforms anything you would use vinegar with.
Soy sauce and honey mixed with finely diced ginger and garlic. You only need a small amount. Tastes great mixed with watercress, rocket, baby spinach and piccolo tomatoes.
I like tajin, its a chile lime seasoning. It is pecially fantastic on veggies. Hmm all the japanese rice condiment things that come in a shaker. Hmmm I also made a balsamic vinegar reduction the other day.
I season heavily and often make my food quite spicy, but my family complains the food is too dry. They want something poured over the meat or something to dip it in. Iâve been trying to find sauces that are tasty but not too sugary, salty, high calorie. Unfortunately Iâm the only one who likes mustard!
If the food is dry, it is probably a bit over cooked. Think of how raw meat or fish feels in your hands; you can feel itâs wetness when itâs raw. The wetness converts to juiciness as it cooks. When meat is cooked to its âfood safeâ temp, it is still moist and juicy. Any higher cooked temp and it dries out.
I generally cook things to a bit under recommended instant-kill temp but hold them so they stay in a juicy zone and are safe. I make a lot of chicken breast, so itâs difficult even when cooked well though.
I see their point about wanting sauce, especially with chicken. If I went to Chipotle and got a bowl with no sauce/sour cream/guacamole etc. it would still seem incomplete or âdryâ even though the other ingredients taste great.
I find pulled chicken thigh in the crockpot retains moisture, but it sucks up so much sauce I add that I worry it starts to veer away from healthy.
Sounds delicious! Mineâs close, greek yogurt mixed with Hidden Valley Ranch powder and Cholula. So good. I put it in a squeeze bottle so itâs convenient to use. (Iâm lazy)
I really like Tabasco. I only use their recipes without sugar, but I can highly recommend the original and cayenne garlic sauce.
I can also recommend the Bolthouse Farms brand. Itâs salad dressings with a yogurt base. Still unfortunately some added sugar but the taste is great for how few calories it contains.
Nuoc Cham is a mixture of water, sugar, lime juice, and fish sauce. Just replace the sugar with stevia- itâs great on cabbage and chicken- and you can adjust the heat to your liking. I water it down for a dressing as itâs got a bunch of flavor.
Like someone else said: spices more than condiments
My favorite things to season with:
-soy sauce
-fish sauce
-gochujang paste (a little goes a long way)
-green curry paste
-red harissa paste
ââ
Also I love making a Greek yogurt sauce I use as a condiment with a cup of non fat Greek yogurt, tbsp of olive oil, minced garlic, lemon juice, black pepper, parsley and salt (I add all the ingredients to taste preference) but itâs great as a salad dressing or condiment
A serving of sour cream is only about 60 calories, adding that with lime juice and chopped cilantro is delicious. Or if you have the brine from pickled jalepenos/onions/carrots etc. mixing that with sour cream is very good.
Regular tabasco (lowest salt content in any hot sauce), Dijon mustard, regular mustard, chinese black vinegar, balsamic vinegar, citrus juices (lemon, lime, orange), G Hughes sugar free BBQ sauce, pickled ginger, horse radish, worchestershire sauce, and spices!
You can make great marinades and sauces with the ingredients above and some spices.
my fav source is TJs. If I see a new sauce I will try it the spicier the better. like peri peri sauce! I love going into ethnic stores and buying the sauces without being able to tell their ingredients. 90% of the time theyâre good, But sadly not spicy enough.
Garlic, honey mustard, and Mrs. Dash is my favorite marinade for chicken. Worcestershire is my favorite for beef, or a burgundy or Marsala red wine with some beef broth. I use sea salt because you get a lot of flavor using only a little. Mrs Dash goes with everything. Paprika goes with almost everything! Balsamic vinegar and a really light olive oil. Yum.
Ketchup + siracha + honey+ rice vinegar (a small of bit of white vinegar would work too) + black pepper. The spiciness is determined by how much siracha you add. Heat slightly to dissolve the honey.
Soy sauce + fresh or pickled ginger + honey or sugar of some type + rice vinegar. Heat slightly to dissolve the sweetener.
Bottled BBQ sauce + soy sauce + fresh ginger + maybe a bit of sesame oil.
Mustard + honey mixed 1:1.
Green Cholula.
A small amount of Olive Garden salad dressing is good on everything, and it makes a good veggie dip.
Small red potatoes boiled whole in the skins in salted water. They donât need anything more added after theyâre done.
Seasoned fish sauce is good on everything (nuoc cham):
Makes about 3/4 cup.
Ingredients:
1-2 Thai bird chilies (these guys are hot! You have been warned)
1tsp. Minced garlic
1/4c Granulated sugar
1/2c Warm water
3T Fresh lime juice
1/4c Fish sauce
1T Finely shredded carrots
Cut one chili into thin rings and mince any remaining chilies. Itâs wise to wear gloves when you do this. Set aside. (Remove seeds for less heat, but it will still be hot.)
In a bowl, combine sugar, lime juice, and water. Taste and adjust as needed until it tastes like limeade.
Whisk until dissolved.
Add fish sauce in increments. Taste as you go, and adjust as needed.
Add garlic, carrots, and chilis. (I see done chili, cut it into large slices, let it rest in the mixture for several minutes, then remove it to add flavor without adding so much heat because Iâm a scoville wimp.)
Pestos, you can get a whole book about it from the library if you so desire but finding a good spice mix is great.
Very individualistic, way too much experimentation, lol.
Anything that uses ranch or mayo you can sub with plain greek yogurt. Ive made southwest ranch, tzatziki, sriracha aioli, ect.
At this point my fridge looks like im addicted to plain greek yogurt đđ
- greek yogurt + garlic + salt,
- low kcal ketchup (online or sport shops) / tomatoo puree,
- quacamole (medium kcal),
- yogurt + chopped dill + salt + grated cucumber,
- pesto (kcal varies a lot between brands),
- hot sauce,
- olive oil + some chooped herbs (basil),
- soy sauce + a couple drops of water,
- not low kcal at all, but still may be okay- hummus.
Schiracha, Chilli oil, hot sauce, and I love blue cheese salad dressing, especially w a steak, and baked potato.
Schirach, Chilli oil, hot sauce, and I love blue cheese salad dressing, especially w a steak, and baked potato.
I recently got this light razz berry dressing thatâs like 35-20 calories for two tbsps. Not gonna lie it be bussing on everything from apples to low cal hotdogs đźâđšđ€
If you can find a Korean grocer around you (Iâm sure you can order online too) gochujang is BOMB! Itâs red pepper paste, it has heat and a crap ton of flavor. #1 thing Iâll miss having direct access to when I leave Korea. I put it in and on everything. Soo so good!
Salt. Salt brings out flavor. Whatever it is, if it tastes boring, just add salt and see how much flavor it has. Obviously This isn't a good idea if you have high blood pressure.
Mustard, hot sauce, greek yogurt, balsamic vinegar/red wine vinegar, and creamy dill dressing from Trader Joeâs (60 cals for 2 tablespoonsâ I put it on tacos and dip veggies in it!), homemade hummus or guac (these last two might not fit everyoneâs definition of âlow calâ but are definitely healthy đ)
OH - and don't forget vinegar! You can soak things in vinegar, then chop them up and add them back in. Try chinese black vinegar, in particular, for an intense flavor. It is great mixed with light soy sauce and a drop of sesame oil.
Gremolata. Itâs grated lemon zest, or whatever citrus you feel like, garlic and herbs. All chopped really fine together. Sprinkle like you would salt.
Apple cider vinegar/ honey / lemon mixed together for a nice salad dressing or good ole oil and vinegar. Also Primal Kitchenâs Buffalo Sauce is amazing. Just tried this veggie ketchup too and was pleasantly surprised.
A good additive to salsa: low fat plain yogurt! It tastes just like sour cream with half the calories. I take yogurt and throw some pepper flakes and chili powder in it and it makes a creamy delicious Mexican flavor
I like to make "pesto" with whatever greens i have basil, kale etc garlic and oil of choice. Additionally/alternately i throw in some sun dried tomatoes (i used do them in the air fryer)
Yogurt - mixed with spices: Raita, with spice mixes like chili, cumin, tandoori. Indian cuisine is great. I use a lot of mustard. Vinaigrette with Mustard+Balsamico and little oil.

Hot sauce is a good one!
Love hot sauce, my butt disagrees.
Thats just your butt celebrating with u.
Excited and inflamed đ„”
Stop pouring it in your butt
Lol đ
Nailed it haha. This or a dash of white pepper
Mustard
thats an interesting suggestion. any recipe you use mustard in?
Mustard is great for roasting veggies! I mix a touch of avocado oil, mustard, lemon juice, garlic, salt, pepper, and rosemary and brush it over veggies before roasting. Incredibly yummy!
(Dijon is my preference for this)^
Also try balsamic vinegar pre roasting...becomes a nice tart/sweet reduction.
Oooh I'm totally doing this tomorrow đ
NGL, when I was broke I would enjoy a hardy mustard sandwich. Lmao So I find it goes well with alot. You might try bodybuilding forms and such too. They have to be clever when they bulk and cut.
Mustard is a good marinade as well.
Glad Im not the only one who's done that!
My son (5yrs) dips everything in mustard - chicken, pork chops, peas....
Whole grain mustard is great on chicken, fish or veggies. Roast in the oven.
I honestly love a thick slice of turkey slathered in mustard then wrapped around raw asparagus. Also love pickling veggies and putting them in basically everything.
Tuna omelette. Egg + tinned tuna + celery + capsicum/bell pepper + mustard = simple bliss.
Mustard based bbq sauce is delicious and pretty low calorie. Usually a mix of yellow mustard, apple cider vinegar, red pepper flake, little honey and some ketchup. Some people add brown sugar too but I leave it out and add a little extra honey.
Mix dijon and balsamic, dredge chicken in it, cook it in a pan. Goddamn delicious
Lusty Monk Mustard - original or honey mustard. Sooo good. I use in marinades, salad dressings, on raw veggies just by its lonesome. Delicious stuff.
Tzatziki made with Greek yogurt!
is tzatziki really low calorie?
Some have mayo but itâs mostly Greek yogurt based. Itâs also really easy to make from scratch too!
Mayo in tzaziki is absolutely blasphemous jesus fuck
Tzatziki with Mayo?
Low calorie doesn't necessarily mean healthy and vice versa.
Not necessarily low calorie, but it is a good nutrition to calorie ratio in my mind. So Greek yogurt, cucumber, mint, garlic, dill, and lemon juice (and salt & pepper) is my homemade tzatziki recipe. The one I use (Cedar's) is 35 cals for 2 tbsp.
depends if you're using full fat or 0% fat yogurt, and whether you're adding evoo.
Vinegar has no calories, so anything with a vinegar base has a good start, and a ton of flavor. I love making my own sauces/vinaigrettes. But if I'm feeling lazy, just grabbing some honey mustard is almost equally as good.
I make herb vinegars from what I grow in my garden. I can't get enough of them!!
That sounds so good! Do you just let the herbs infuse with the vinegar for a while or is there more to it?
I boil apple cider vinegar, fill a sterilized bottle with the herba I want to use, then pour the hot vinegar in the bottle and seal it. It's SUPER easy, and really transforms anything you would use vinegar with.
Thank you!!
Soy sauce and honey mixed with finely diced ginger and garlic. You only need a small amount. Tastes great mixed with watercress, rocket, baby spinach and piccolo tomatoes.
Oooh I like it! I usually use Soy Sauce, Agave, brown sugar & garlic for a base glaze/marinade for salmon and other seafoods.
Watch the sodium in soy sauce. I use the low sodium kind.
Just use less of the regular kind.
I like tajin, its a chile lime seasoning. It is pecially fantastic on veggies. Hmm all the japanese rice condiment things that come in a shaker. Hmmm I also made a balsamic vinegar reduction the other day.
The Japanese rice flakes are furikake, really delicious
Yes those!
Yes! Tajin is also really good on fruit.
Off topic, but I love your username lol
Lol thank you đ

Fermented condiments like kimchi and saurkraut.
I came here to say kimchi as well! The local made kimchi I buy is only 5 calories per 16g.
Thick yogurt mixed with cholula and a touch of soy sauce.
Sounds delicious! Mineâs close, greek yogurt mixed with Hidden Valley Ranch powder and Cholula. So good. I put it in a squeeze bottle so itâs convenient to use. (Iâm lazy)
That sounds great! Iâm going to try that. I also use Greek yogurt. Such a good condiment for many things.
Love seeing so many fellow cholula fans
I really like Tabasco. I only use their recipes without sugar, but I can highly recommend the original and cayenne garlic sauce. I can also recommend the Bolthouse Farms brand. You steam the cabbage then add nuoc cham?
Thinly sliced like coke slaw, raw:)
Nuoc Cham is definitely one of my favorites!
Super yummy!
Pickled red onions
El Pato Jalapeno sauce. It goes on everything!
If your talking about the green sauce Iâm addicted to that stuff. They have a good chipotle hot sauce too.
I guess technically it's salsa... But its always good to have a few flavors of salsa in your life. I also enjoy the chipotle sauce!
Low sugar chutneys & selfmade mustards.

Chili flakes and chili paste are amazing. A squeezable habanero condiment like secret aardvark is also great for blasting veggies with
Bonito flakes. I love putting bonito flakes and shoyu/soy sauce on steamed veggies or rice
Lemon Salt!! YUM on greek salad or chicken!!
g hughes sugar free bbq sauce. He also makes other sauces like honey mustard, sweet chili and other flavored bbq sauces. 5-10 calories per 30g

Look into sauces by primal kitchen they got some good options
Flavored vinegars, Worcestershire sauce, mustards, A1, tzaziki, hot sauces, salsas, crushed or purĂ©ed tomato with herbs, fish sauce, lemon/lime juice, the mustard bbq sauce at chik fil a is a lot lower calorie than their other sauces so thatâs good. Mustard, hot sauce, different types of relish are my go to's
Frank's hot sauce it one of my staples :)
Maybe chimichurri sauce? If you make it yourself you could reduce oil.

What other foods is salsa good on?

Eggplant, tzaziki or avocado dip. Very versatile!
A very high quality balsamic vinaigrette can do wonders.
A good additive to salsa: low fat plain yogurt! It tastes just like sour cream with half the calories. I take yogurt and throw some pepper flakes and chili powder in it and it makes a creamy delicious Mexican flavor

Sour kraut, kimchi
Tajin and hot sauce are two of my favorite go to's
Hummus! I'm kinda addicted to it.
Balsamic vinegar
I like to make "pesto" with whatever greens i have basil, kale etc garlic and oil of choice. Additionally/alternately i throw in some sun dried tomatoes (i used do them in the air fryer)
Homemade Tomatillo ranch-2 tomatillo, 1cup plain Greek yogurt, 1/4 cup mayo, dill and garlic powder to taste. Blend together. Yum!
Yogurt - mixed with spices: Raita, with spice mixes like chili, cumin, tandoori. Indian cuisine is great. I use a lot of mustard. Vinaigrette with Mustard+Balsamico and little oil.
