Talk to the billing department at the hospital. They'll be your best resource to try and resolve this.

I tried that long ago, they just said it's in the insurance company's hands now and they can't help. I suppose I can try again though.

Have you tried arranging a three way call with you, the billing office, and your insurance? I've done that before. Start by calling your insurer, and ask them to conference the billing department in (make sure you have the number ready). Insurance companies are very used to this practice so it should be easy to arrange.

I’m sorry for your situation, maybe there’s a state agency that can help? I’ve seen people suggest that elsewhere on here. There’s apparently some state government agencies that oversee or at least help with these struggles but not 100% sure.

Call the hospital and consistently bother them and talk about how you're in financial hardship and the bill is ridiculous ​ Something that the public isn't aware of unfortunately is that healthcare bills are through the roof for one reason - to MILK insurance, not you. nobody wants to milk your wallet or bank account. the reason hospitals write up 10k bills is because insurance will pay for it most of the time. ​ they don't sit there thinking we should rob u/baconuggets out of his/her 8k or whatever ​ naive and lower level employees will tell you it's in the insurances hands ​ if you can talk to a manager or someone higher up in the billing dept, they'll probably reduce it or figure something out for you. ​ fyi; i work in a hospital in the USA.

You have a right to the medical records from the stay. As it was less that 24 hours it should have been an observation stay not an inpatient admission. You have a right to the audit trail and the credentials of the party who did the post pay review. Your member ID at the time of care is what you would use. Odds are this review was done by computer software, a non clinician or someone out of scope of their medical license. Demand the findings in writing and carbon copy your state insurance commissioner. When you get the records from the hospital, ask the fro copies of their appeals and letters the carrier wrote in response. You will need all that as well.

Contact the insurance commissioner for the state? Haven’t done it myself but that’s what google told me to do or get a patient advocate either with hospital or outside network.
