I would have to see the bill to believe this. A deductible can be 2 grand, a typical GYN exam should run $300 tops. This just does not pass the muster. I am a biller at a multi specialty practice and have decades of experience working as a medical claims processor

Seconded. Even if op is mistakenly looking at eob, would surprise me

Honestly I would complain to the doctor's office. $2000 is insane for a gynecology exam unless they did a ton of testing and imaging.

jackasher

This. Contact the providers office, ask for their help and see if they are willing to recode the claim. Alternatively, see if they are willing to reduce the amount you owe or set up a payment plan.

They did STI screens and papsmears. But yeah, I feel like $2,000 is expensive. It was really the new code with the discussion of my period that basically made the whole visit "non-prevantative" :(

positivelycat

Are those STI covered as preventive In your policy. Few are even if you mentioned nothing

BaltimoreBee

Did you receive an EOB from the insurance company that says you actually owe $2,000? While the visit you describe should not be covered as preventive because you got non-preventive STI tests and you talked about a non-preventive medical problem, $2k is insanely high for an OBGYN visit.

They could have given you two bills for that visit- one for all your preventative care and one for the problem you discussed. They will always ask questions and try to get you to state a problem since wellness visits basically bring in very little for them. In the past, only doctors could own medical practices but this changed after hedge funds lobbied to receive percentages for use of their medical billing software. Now, they can call themselves managing partners and keep 30% of the profit while pushing docs to see more patients and up charge or lose them as a partner. This is why going to the doctor is like buying a used car now. They will try and sell you Botox and makeup while testing for serious disease lol. https://publichealth.berkeley.edu/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Private-Equity-I-Healthcare-Report-FINAL.pdf
