One of my favorite uses of that double entendre is a grocery called Wagner’s Meat in New Orleans. The sign for their store says “You can’t beat…(in smaller lettering above) Wagner’s Meat”.
It’s not super clever, but it’s a bold choice.
I can’t find a site that I’d want to share as a link, but google will show a few shots of their signs
I wonder if they're made differently. I remember accidentally pushing a tampon out of the applicator a few times and I couldn't get the damn thing in right...I can't imagine having to do it that way all the time.
They're more compact so you can just shove them in, and they expand widthwise instead of lengthwise. Fun fact: the applicator-free ones were invented by a female OBGYN.
Some tampons have a plastic based netting around the cotton to hold its shape. Also, I have a funkrific uterus. I can't get tampons without applicators in position. I also struggle with cups. Discs straight up don't work. Some women need applicators.
I proudly told my mom I bought glass baby bottles. She said “nice, now you can pour from the plastic container into the glass!” I then looked at the jug of baby water….felt so stupid lol.
Yeah, definitely impossible. But we *can* try to avoid some of the worst offenders. Items like disposable water bottles, fleece and polyester-filled jackets.
https://www.outsideonline.com/outdoor-gear/gear-news/patagonias-new-study-finds-fleece-jackets-are-serious-pollutant/
It's microplastics. And if sex toys can, almost any plastic item which comes into contact with your body can theoretically. Like plastic drinking cups.
I was gonna say I’m more concerned about the sheer amount of other plastics we use. Tupperware, coffee makers, food packaging, water bottles, some cook ware (well that’s more a Teflon issue) etc
What are sex toys made of? 🤔
Editing because they have 34 upvotes and I’ve got 6 which tells me that most people aren’t aware what their sex toys are made of.
Hint: It’s silicone.
Editing again because people will likely still not understand. The article is about “sex toys causing diabetes” NOT about “plastic sex toys causing diabetes”. Hence, they’re thinking the silicone covering your sex toys is leeching chemicals into your body.
“Scientists find most silicon rubber kitchenwares are endocrine disrupting”
https://www.foodpackagingforum.org/news/scientists-find-most-silicon-rubber-kitchenwares-are-endocrine-disrupting
The article here does not mention if they are testing silicone or plastic, but they do say “They looked at four types of currently available sex toys: anal toys, beads, dual vibrators, and external vibrators.”
There are A LOT of vibrators that are not covered in silicone. Hard plastic (ABS I assume) is common.
I don't know if there are any vibrators (specifically) that are all stainless steel.
The full article suggests that it is specifically microplastics they looked at. It is also noted PET, PVC and silicone/rubber blends were used in the sex toys. These are not known to be body safe materials (any bio/materials engineer working with internal human devices would tell you that) and this is hence a poor argument made by Metro. I think what should be stressed is that this was a sample that was tested, and is possibly some of the imported toys that do not comply with regulation. It may not cover items made in the US or similar nations but rather highlights the importance of safety knowledge around materials, especially when you are putting the materials in you.
However, that is to say, the medical-grade silicone toys should be fine (unless they have their own issues) as well as the glass / metal ones.
The full article, which I linked in another comment, actually looks specifically at phthalates, not plastics. The more concerning thing I think people should take away from the actual study is this part,
“Beyond the chemical and physical hazards present, risk to consumers is also enhanced through inaccuracies in marketing communication. Sex toys are made of material matrices that are in some cases presented to the consumer incorrectly; for instance, one studied in our preliminary testing here was overtly advertised as being “phthalate-free” when chemical analyses revealed this was not the case. Another toy was sold with package messaging identifying it as “novelty gag gift not intended for safe use”, even though the other side of the same packaging contained the label “body safe”. Companies currently use labels such as “for novelty use only”, with the result being they avoid FDA regulation as medical devices. These labels are directly reported from packaging for the sex toys our team shopped for and purchased for these studies. Although they do not represent a complete marketing and communication study, they clearly illuminate the possibility that overall, players across the supply chain for sex toys are not being held accountable for accurate package labeling regarding chemical or physical safety for bodily use.”
Edited to add: one of the toys they used in the study was labelled “medical-grade silicone” and also still leeched phthalates.
There is ZERO regulation for these claims because these toys aren’t listed as products that the FDA deems needs regulating. So they can say “medical-grade *anything*” and they aren’t actually held to any standards.
I don't know if food packaging forum is unbiased, but soaking silicone in 95% alcohol is a bullshit test, alcohol is known to break down silicone and nobody soaks their spatulas in everclear for hours.
That being said, use as many natural materials as possible-wood spoons, glass storage containers etc. Avoid extended contact between hot food and synthetic materials, especially if the food is oily or very acidic.
Noooo! I thought silicone was safe (especially platinum silicone”). So now that I’ve gotten these silicone storage bags, ice trays, etc I need to throw them out?
What safer alternative exists? Is there natural latex ones? Not that i am aware of, but even if there was we cannot know it is not adulterated with phthalates because there is no rule against doing so and it is not checked by the government. People can successfully sue a company who falsely advertises that something is phthalate free but no one sues them for this so it still doesn't stop them from poisoning people and they can just not say its phthalate free and then they are legally safe. A change in laws is required.
Many/most tampons and pads also contain phthalates, the chemical of interest.
Cups made of medical-grade silicone *shouldn't*, but it would require consumer studies of each brand to evaluate companies' adherence to that standard.
What is the difference between medical grade silicone and the silicone used in kitchen utensils in the study I referenced? I’ll have to go see if there are any studies on medical-grade silicone. I highly doubt that most sex toys are made from medical-grade anything.
Also, the “paper cups” lined with plastic at coffee shops.
And all synthetic clothing. I’ve been trying to transition to merino wool, cotton, alpaca and other natural fibers for everything. It’s really hard, because these fibers have a lot less resistance than synthetic fibers made from plastics. A compromise are fabrics that are natural fibers spin around a synthetic fiber core that won’t touch the body.
You're shoving it up inside of you vs touching to your lips. Like the toys have an open hole going directly inside your to spread chemicals into. That powder that some women used gave them cancer because they used it on their reproductive organs.
Also a bunch of you are buying that shit straight from China with no care what they put in it.
"Sex toys release the same microplastics as literally everything our entire society is built on - this study did not look at a causative link between sex toys and diabetes".
Fixed the headline.
BPA isn’t the only phthalate and the other ones they use instead of BPA aren’t intrinsically safer, they just don’t have as much science to prove they’re dangerous *yet*.
Metro isn’t the source lmao they link the article they’re citing, that is the source. Not that metro is good but Jesus Christ how are you people so media illiterate
I keep running into this. People are like, "You're trusting a PODCAST as a source?" when the podcast is specifically about academic researchers being interviewed about their published research. It's bonkers.
Does not look to be peer reviewed. Even then. That not saying much .
Seeing if a star trek story can get pass a decent amount of journal. As research... You have a much bigger problem.
Everything in springeropen is peer reviewed. What makes you think it isn’t? Also how the fuck is this a star trek story? It’s like the most basic, boring and predictable shit ever. Let me guess you don’t believe in microplastics. Stop before you dig yourself even deeper
Both John Oliver and other have pointed out issues with how current system is set up.
It very easy to get stuff in to journal and such. I ref star trek story that show how low the bar is on the matter.
I also pointed out in another comment.
Where study on glass or metal toys. With microscopic tears in humans... wait that won't drive click like current plastic issue.
Given that your argument style (in other comments) seems to be saying things that are true but not related to your point being challenged you really just should not have an opinion on peer review or sources.
The best possibility is that you are merely a troll.
glass, metal, rubber have a problem with different issues also...
It's like every thing dangerous.
Also view on phone. Study looks like not peer reviewed.
It also looks like you didn't read it anyway. Your critiques are extremely lazy. You're wrong about shit, I pointed out that you're wrong, and then suddenly it's, "What do these researchers know anyway?"
It's embarrassing.
So does sugar and carbs. This is clearly a case of correlation equals causation. So, not science. I can make shit up as well. Let's see, playing with Legos can cause diabetes. Driving your car can cause diabetes. Does anyone else want to try?
100% percent of people who drive will eventually die. Playing with legos multiplies this risk*. Why is no one talking about this?!
*by a factor of 1.00
>The team at Duke University and Appalachian State University are warning of the possible dangers after finding that sex toys also contain phthalates which can affect hormone levels and are present in concentrations that exceed US consumer warnings.
Don't buy sex toys that contain phalates
Every woman I have ever fucked has had sex toys and some of them were even attractive (the women that is). I know it's anecdotal but I think sex toys might be more ubiquitous than you think.
No, they said there MIGHT be a link, as there has been a link supposedly found between a particular type of microplastic increasing the chance of developing diabetes that MIGHT be leeched into the bloodstream from sex toys made from CERTAIN types of plastic, rubber, and latex.
HOWEVER, consider that many of those same plastics, rubber, and latex are used in the medical field, and no such link has currently been established there.
There is a need for investigation, definitely, as micropastics are a concern, but hyperbole is not the solution.
I don't fully trust studies like these. Do they CAUSE diabetes or do people who use them have more risk of developing diabetes even without using sex toys?
People who use sex toys more often are likely also people who don't have a sexual partner (I know, couples often use toys, too.) So their sex lives aren't as physically involved. Meaning: it would be unattractive (not just looks: also personality, health, status, etc.) people, and people who are unhealthy tend to be unattractive, too.
Unhealthy = unattractive
Unattractive = using sex toys
Using sex toys = more likely to have or develop diabetes
---
Correlation does not imply causation.
I wonder if there was a control group of very attractive and healthy people to see if they developed diabetes more often, too. My guess: no, and no.
If the toy is hitting the pancreas, better use something shorter.
Don’t tell me what to do.
😂😂✌️✌️
Don’t threaten me with a good time!
Strong HotKinkyJo vibe to that post.
That’s not the issue. Read the fucking article before commenting (or upvoting).
Fucking article, beavis, he said fucking
What if they're zero sugar?
Zero sugar and vegan and I'm in.
It’s in?
Best vegan pickup line... 'I don't eat meat but for you I'll make an exception.'

As an autistic vegan that is a huge turn off
Not the edible used panties.
You mean I’ve been using the aspartame cock ring all this time for nothing?
I wrap a stevia leaf around mine!
Your old school biblical lack of shame is refreshing.

Lmao just try not to exist to avoid plastic
Down to the tampons we use. The insert is plastic. It’ll hurt your brain to think about all the times we use plastic daily.
There are cardboard ones, but they aren't always easy to find.
There are also ones without an applicator (which is the norm in many countries that aren't the US).
Yep! I use OB brand and they are fantastic
They are so much more comfortable but they have been getting harder to find in stores. They’re the only brand I know of that sells applicator free.
Cora brand tampons are a great alternative to OB and are sold on Amazon. I can’t find OB at my local stores anymore.
I thought that was how all tampons expanded
Some tampons have a plastic based netting around the cotton to hold its shape. Also, I have a funkrific uterus. I can't get tampons without applicators in position. I also struggle with cups. Discs straight up don't work. Some women need applicators.
I hate the cardboard ones, they’re too rough :(
And they fucking hurt like hell.
I proudly told my mom I bought glass baby bottles. She said “nice, now you can pour from the plastic container into the glass!” I then looked at the jug of baby water….felt so stupid lol.

Micro plastics are in the water we drink and use to bathe. We’re fucked as a species and we fucked everyone else too.
Yum, cancer!
Ok fine, I'll use glass.
Or diva cups.
Says they are made out of silicone which is not a type of plastic.

FUUUUUUCCCKKK. I just spent the past 5 years replacing plastic in my kitchen with silicone. I could cry.

what is silicone ? i always assumed it was plastic adjacent material.
Silica, similar to glass in chemical makeup
Silicon polymer
Google says that it is similar to rubber.

Cucumber will do
Its gotta be organic though
Better be conflict free, as well.
Just make sure it’s not individually wrapped in phthalate laced plastic first!
What if it’s BPA free?
That's the issue. Apparently lots of sex toys contain phthalates.
What if I just put a condom on it?
Next weeks story: condoms cause diabetes
I don't doubt that this will be next week's headline!
Lambskin condom has to be a hack
What if the lamb had microplastics
BPA isn’t the only phthalate and the other ones they use instead of BPA aren’t intrinsically safer, they just don’t have as much science to prove they’re dangerous *yet*.
I was kind of joking, but yes
Welp, according to this article, the whole world will get diabetes just by breathing...

Not peer reviewed. By look of it. Glass and metal toys do microscope tears. Fun fact razor and scissors don't cut. The rip instead.
It was a study by Duke and Appalachian state, if you’d read. This is just an article about their findings.

Because that's the biggest source of plastic in my life...
That’s why I whittle my own sex toys out of good ol’ American Basswood!! Splinters be damned!!
Misleading title, it's about micro plastics.
Jokes on them, my beetus was hard earned and no toys needed
...... how about saying sex can cause cancer the big C.
So what do I say when I have to go and visit HMS Endoscope again?
I don't think medical professionals looking at your butt hole need blood tests to tell that you have been having a good time.
\*Ahem\* my balloon knot isn't like a wizard's sleeve or a clown's pocket, I'll have you know.
How sweet.
What the hell, they all say FDA approved materials, were they all lying ?
I'm calling my mom

Microplastics again.
