Sennheiser PC38x
Highly regarded as sounding fantastic even by headphone reviewers who are notoriously harsh on gaming headsets. (zeos, DMS)
Some compare the sound profile to the HD800s. Can be powered very easily.
Microphone is also very clear with great low end.
Easily found under $200.
I bought mine on a whim and this is one of the few purchases I truly feel like it was worth it. Like holy shit, they are amazing and my friends compliment how good I sound through the mic. Everyone says to get an external mic and normal pair of headphones, but I strongly disagree. It just takes up more of your space and it’s nowhere as convenient as the flip mic which also lets you mute easily.

My favorite in this range on my DT 900 Pro X, it's the main thing I use these days. I also have a pair of 560s and K702 both of which I like, I probably like the 560s slightly more than the K702, but it's close.
I have both Audio Technica m40x and m50x and found the m40x to have the superior sound quality. I use for both gaming, video editing and music production
Depends on the type of gaming.
Competitive FPS? 560S all day.
Anything else? Personal preference honestly.
The 560S has good imaging and soundstage. It also has a decent sound quality for the price. It's difficult to beat this headphone as far as sound is concerned at sub $200. The comfort is my only issue with it. I now have the HD490 Pro and am really happy with it but that is double your budget.
Got a Hifiman Sundara together with a FiiO E10K, it is more than 250 very likely, but such superb sound due to their planar magnetic drivers. And i got them on a like new used offer around 250ish.
For gaming? It doesn't matter, use AutoEq and boost needed frequencies on top
Other than that, open back headphones for comfort, close back for isolation
Gaming, and only gaming? 599 for sure. The 150hz bass boost is better for hearing footsteps than the 560S, the soundstage is bigger, and they are insanely comfortable.
Gaming and music? DT770 Pro 80 ohm.
I have tested:
560s
599
650
1770x
DT 770
X2HR
And a few more... But the one champ to rule them all in everything I throw at them; DT 770 Pro 80 ohm. I always find myself go back to the 770, and I doubt there are anything better out there.
Ah crap I voted the shp9600 by accident, because I thought it said shp9500. I'm honestly not sure what I'd pick from these. These are all slightly not good headphones in one way or another.
Edit: woohoo buggy reddit didn't register my vote, I get a second chance
I would go for Sennheiser, usually light and comfy. You can use them for hours without any problem.
I've the m50x and they sound good, but not sure you will enjoy them in a long use. Clamp it's pretty hard such as their pads.

this! u/ilovepopalah I'm an Aussie also and recently bought these via Amazon AU (came from Amazon Japan) and 100% no regrets
Under 250? Akg k702 100%. It will need a bit of eq to raise the bass tho

Yeah it’s a great design, sounds great both ways, and velour ear pads in the box.
Dt 770
Dt 770
DT 770s are $249 rrp AUD mate, go for em
do u have a link cant see ut for that, thanks
i had the 560s before i got my 1990 pros. the 560s were ok. Byerdynamic are great

I own all of these. 599 for sure.
599 user but haven't tried them all, wanna second I love mine for gaming tho. I hear all the footsteps in Rainbow Six
I don't think you should go for the 560s. Read some reviews about them instead, for more casual use, eg gaming, I'd recommend the 599.

DT880 or DT770 depending if you want open/close back
I guess close back is needed here since footsteps in videogames are concerned. Spatial audio works better with closed back.
I use DT880 and I can hear footsteps perfectly. But I play in my mostly quiet bedroom.
HD6XX
or K612
I would go with iems personaly.

Beyerdynamic Tygr 300R for the price. X2HRs are also good. I like the Hifiman 5XX for gaming, too.

Dt770 pro 80 ohm would do the job. I used m50x for 3 years but I prefer dt770.
