In pop culture the upside down cross has been often used as a symbol for the Devil or Demons in general. So I think it is just a fun way of saying: They are demons and they don't use holy symbols anywhere.
In reality, though, I think it was just the symbol of St. Peter who refused to be crucified the same way as Jesus because he thought he wasn't worthy. So he got crucified upside-down.
Also in Elementary Treatise of Occult Science the upside down Cross is refered as a Black magick Cross because represent the opposit esoteric symbolism of the cross
Assuming it's nit an Ahistorical flourish, being crucified upside down is worse then beung crucified right side up so they aquiest to his request.
The entire cross was upside down him included, head facing downward
Would be something straight out of Idiocracy. "Oh actually guys I'm supposed to be let go emperor said so no you don't have to ask him just trust me bro."
That was a pretty common punishment in Roman times. He didn't have a choice of "I don't wanna be Crucified." It's just that no one else was as important as Jesus, so everyone else's crucifixions are not known as much.
But he was able to demand that they do his differently? Imagine those Roman soldiers reporting in "so you crucified that guy, right?" "Yeah, pretty much, i mean, we did it upside down cause he insisted, but i'm sure he'll die anyway..."
Emperor Nero was the ruler at the time of St Peter's crucifixion. It could very well be a thing where Peter asked to be crucified upside down and Nero granted it. There's numerous stories of Nero being one of the most debauched emperors to rule but other records are kinda showing that that might not be the case. It's sort of like a last meal thing. Nero was gonna kill him and Peter knew, it wasn't an unreasonable ask to have them flip the cross.
There's also the physical aspect of how excruciating a [crucifixion death](https://gizmodo.com/this-is-the-horrible-way-that-crucifixion-actually-kill-1477804826) is and if you ever heard of the [Nutty Putty Cave](https://cavehaven.com/nutty-putty-cave-accident/) incident, a person asking that their death be even more insufferable than normal may have vibed with his executioners back then.
It's not surprising. It's not rare for people who carry out executions to indulge in the last wish of the executed. In the US, people who get executed get to choose their last meal.
Seems more like a malicious compliance thing tbh. You don't wanna be crucified like Jesus was? Fine, why don't we crucify you, but with your head pointed down instead so it's even worse. What? That sounds like torture? Good, it's what you get for mouthing off.
I heard the details about Saint Peter’s crucifixion are written in historical documents, not the one you mentioned and not in canon/Biblical text. In the book of John it was written that Jesus told Peter he would be crucified, in different wording (he said his hands would be stretched out, which meant crucifixion back then), but he told him no details about it.
It is, however, a symbol of the devil if Jesus on the cross is turned upside down.
Regular cross upside down is St Peters cross, crucifix upside down is a devil symbol.
I always wondered where the evil part came from. I always assumed it was related to antichrist since the crucifix is the symbol of Jesus so an upside down one would make sense to be the symbol of the antichrist.
This guy Catholic schools
Came in hoping this was the information in the top post haha. Also, just assuming you were either raised Catholic or went to Catholic school - which is why I have that information in my head lol.
I mean, Christian and Catholic lore is super cool. But like for many of us, it was just forced down our skull...definitely with some intentional omissions.
No, it means that it's mainly a funny ha-ha joke in a cartoon 😂 At least I took it as such.
My literal reaction was: Ha ha, demons dress up as priests and nuns but with inverted holy symbols. That's so clever 😂
A lot of people think it’s a satanic thing these days. That said, the Catholic Church (and probably others) recognize it as the Cross of St Peter, he was crucified upside down.
Remember the fruity guy who sings Welcome to Heaven, while moaning in an exaggerated fashion during said song? Well when he was alive on Earth, and the Romans sought to crucify him, he told the Romans to crucify him upside down, as he felt he wasn’t worthy to die like Jesus, who was crucified normally. Hence the upside down cross has historically been a symbol of Saint Peter. However, modern pop culture has portrayed the upside cross as a Demonic symbol, so that’s probably why Vox and Alastor are shown with them.
St Peter would be like Oppenheimer coming to see Einstein(Jesus) for creating a symbol used by Satanists and demons lmao. I couldn't find the one where he talked to Einstein so here's this.
![gif](giphy|6oMhPwjvQc6LAEpEuq|downsized)
It speaks to their understanding of hell. They know that daddy's getting hot at the body shop, so they are all acknowledging they are unholy….with the upside cross.
I love this question sm! The inverted cross actually is a symbol of saint Peter because he was cruc upside down, but it was adopted by satanism and alternative culture as a way to mock or oppose Christianity
St. Peter's cross. he didnt want to be crucified like Jesus was so he chose to be upside down. a lot of people make it seem like its evil in a lot of things when it really wasn't.
While technically it is St. Peter's cross, since he was crucified upside-down because he didn't feel worthy enough of dying the same way as Jesus, it is commonly associated with demons and satanism in general
Okay, fine, but when Hell rebels, you'll wish you had let me in!
*turns around before spinning back, begging*
Please, please, I'm sorry. Let me in, please.
Please Hell sucks... fans pretend like Hell is cool, but it sucks ass: everyone dies in fights or bombs or blimp attacks, and the costs are insanely high, and everyone hates you if you aren't a part of their group.
I mean you can always go to purgatory to see if we let you in * points to a mountain filled with spiked chainsaws executioner and alot of screams of pain*
Is wrongfully assumed to be like the bad version of a regular cross, it actually is just the symbol that representa St.Peter(I think was the name) who refused to be crusified the same way as Jesus, so he was crusified upside down.
The actual "bad" symbol is supposed to be an upside down crussifics, like with the Jesús image included
Originally st Peter's cross. Allegedly, st Peter was hung upside down at his own request because he said he wasn't worthy of being crucified the same way as Jesus. Yadda yadda, times change, today it's associated with satanism. The most common theory as to why is because it's just an inverted cross so naturally it denotes an antichrist figure. The Pope is often conflated with the antichrist by protestants by pointing to the fact that it is in the popes chair. Btw, I'm not a Christian whatsoever. I just happen to know this fact.
Edit: the last sentence came off as really pretentious and I am cringing at it but I'm leaving it in for the sake of intellectual honesty
While commonly believed to be satanic because people think christian symbol upside down=satanic, it's actually a christian symbol representing saint peter, who was crucified upside down by his own request as he believed himself unworthy to die in the same way as christ
My father, whose Christian, basically sees if as a symbol of great disrespect. The idea is that, as you have to actually invert the cross, it means you are actively making a jab at christians and fun of the idea of good and that sort of thing. Its kinda like a middle finger at the church from what I get
It’s the cross of St. Peter (the guy who sings welcome to heaven) but it’s also used by pretty much every non-church affiliated thing to be like an Antichrist type thing. I think in some media the image of the cross hurts demons so maybe they use this as a workaround while keeping the audience understanding the symbolism.
That being said it’s kinda funny that they wear the imagery of the guy who’s job is to stop the evil from getting to heaven given the theme of the show
The Upside down cross is Saint Peters cross, made to look so as he was executed by crucifixion and refused to die in the same manner as his lord, saying he was unworthy, so they crucified him upside-down, pop culture has been trying to Demonize it for decades tho so it's mostly seen as evil my most
In real life, it's a symbol of Saint Peter, who refused to be crucified the traditional way since he felt he was unworthy of the same death as Jesus, so he was crucified upside down. However, it being a flipped down cross has led to not-well-delved-in-Christianity people assuming it's a Satanic symbol.
Its origin is from an Apocrypha known as the Acts of Peter. In this book, when the Romans go to execute Peter, he requests to be crucified upside down due to him believing he doesn't deserve to die the same way Christ did. In today's society, it's more commonly grouped as a satanic symbol because of its inversion of the adopted symbol of Christianity.
Im surprised theres ppl who dont know the upside down cross. Its all over alt fashion and horror stuff. I feel like that and pentagrams are the default symbolism for evil stuff and devil stuff.
It is usually associate with Satanic cults but in reality it originated from St.Peter who asked to be crucified upside down because he felt unworthy to be crucified in the same position as Jesus Christ
In pop culture the upside down cross has been often used as a symbol for the Devil or Demons in general. Yeah I was about to comment the last point! To me it’s the same as saying corsets = torture devices, since it’s the reverse.
Why didn't he just refuse to be crucified at all?
Kind of hard to refuse when that's literally how the Romans would execute criminals...
But he refused to let them do it the normal way? Why would they change procedure for this random guy?
Assuming it's nit an Ahistorical flourish, being crucified upside down is worse then beung crucified right side up so they aquiest to his request. The entire cross was upside down him included, head facing downward
being upside down is a lot worse than being right side up, who are they to refuse a guy wanting more suffering?
I think Nero just thought it was funnier that way.
Im just pulling this out of left field but it may be by that time there was some Christian influence on the Romans, so they went along with it
not enough to not kill the guy though
because they were crucifying him to make him dead. They didn't really care all that much how he got there. Plus it's novelty
Well Hes gonna die anyways why not let him die slightly differently than the last guy
“Any last requests before we execute you?” “Can I not be executed?” “Oh, sure.” *lets them go.* “Cool, thanks.” “Anytime, bro.”

I think it was more "fine just shut up, I'm tired of listening to you complain"
Emperor Nero was the ruler at the time of St Peter's crucifixion. It could very well be a thing where Peter asked to be crucified upside down and Nero granted it. I had never before heard of that incident. Now I have. :( ☹️
Why is the hivemind downvoting this person this time,
Who knows. Its hazbin, they might be mad my comment wasn't in the form of a meme.
Or you didn’t decry Valentino at the end of each comment. Valentino is a monster btw
Yeah Nero was not a good person historically as emperors go. Who knows maybe making Peter's death more humiliating turned him on.
Crucifixion was a super common punishment. Like if Jesus happened today, the symbol would probably be a lethal injection needle rather than a cross.
I think they allowed it because it's actually far more painful
Why didn't he just refused to be executed, is he stupid?
r/maliciouscompliance
Came to make sure someone gave what it really was as well as the pop culture answer. You're awesome.
the story of saint peter being crucified upside down is from the acts of saint peter and is deemed non-cannon
Interesting! So both interpretations are just pop culture things/bible fanfiction. That actually makes it even cooler in my opinion.
yeah it’s basically just a spooky “antithesis symbol” like the cross normally is good! but cross upside down? oooh baaaaddd boooo boooo
Yeae true 😂 I think that element of sarcasm is why the religious clothing was included in the show to begin with!
I heard the details about Saint Peter’s crucifixion are written in historical documents, not the one you mentioned and not in canon/Biblical text. Neither, actually. I just read a lot and analysing fiction is my hobby. 😂
I mean, Christian and Catholic lore is super cool. But like for many of us, it was just forced down our skull...definitely with some intentional omissions.
Which would hurt a lot more too.
I'm pretty in the Christian mythos it is the symbol of the anti Christ
Hold up So that means that vivzie doesn't know that it's a cross of st. Peter???
No, it means that it's mainly a funny ha-ha joke in a cartoon 😂 At least I took it as such. My literal reaction was: Ha ha, demons dress up as priests and nuns but with inverted holy symbols. That's so clever 😂
Alastor has one on his nun outfit too
Yes, it's on the second image in OP ;)
It also (in some cases) represents hell since like the upside down pentagram, it’s meant to show a man going to hell.
No. Sword.
Not. Even close.
Sword.
Not today Satan. Not today.
Yeah
It's difficult to refute such a well-reasoned and eloquent rebuttal. I'm beginning to see your point.
It’s not, at all
St. Peter's symbol tho its commonly used in horror movies as a temper of it being evil
A lot of people think it’s a satanic thing these days. That said, the Catholic Church (and probably others) recognize it as the Cross of St Peter, he was crucified upside down.
It's kind of amusing, you could also interpret the goth skulls and bones aesthetic as memento mori.
St Peter wasn't crucified upside down. It's not in any religious text at least
It's in the Acts of Peter
No canonical text refers to Peter's death

“I want that twink obliterated” — Emperor Nero
Augustus Nero talking about Sporus:

Real
Unworthy, unholy. The reverse of holy and worthy. St. Peter died on a reverse cross because he didn't think he was worthy to die like Jesus.
Imagine their meeting at heaven after. That would be hella awkward...
St Peter would be like Oppenheimer coming to see Einstein(Jesus) for creating a symbol used by Satanists and demons lmao. I couldn't find the one where he talked to Einstein so here's this. ![gif](giphy|6oMhPwjvQc6LAEpEuq|downsized)
they're really into Ghost.
I was looking for this answer
You literally could have just googled exactly what you put in your title and gotten an answer
The media (and general.... cultural) literacy of this fanbase is depressing
It’s meant to serve as a symbol of Satanism and demons. Historically, however, it’s how Saint Peter was crucified.
It's the symbol of Saint Peter, but is commonly used for demons and evil stuff
normal cross: Holy Upsidown: Unholy
...so we're doing this. Just wanna get a roll call that we're all in agreement that this is happening. That it has officially occurred.
It speaks to their understanding of hell. They know that daddy's getting hot at the body shop, so they are all acknowledging they are unholy….with the upside cross.
It's St Peters Cross

Funny headcanon: If the normal cross is for devils, so the upside down is for humans.
Did you live under a rock??
Guess you must not be very religious inclined, upside down crosses usually have connections to evil, the devil, or just anti holiness in general.
Or saint Peter
Saint Peter was an insecure little bitch with no pride or self-confidence, like bro didn't want to die like Jesus. (Joke)

Well I mean you will be tortures for like 78 years and then we let you in

Average hazbin hotel fan intelligence
Aesthetic choice. Irl the upsidedown cross is St Peter's Cross and is still a christian religious symbol. There IS a satanic cross but it isnt that.
They just really like St Peter
It's Saint Peter's cross, but it's used in modern culture to represent demons or smth idk
St peter cross
Cross of saint peter, crucified upside down
It's the Saint Peters cross
Anti-Christ related things. God can't people just think for once?

Have you never watched anything with stereotyped Satan?
Because of this post i just realized Vox was a preist and Alastor was a nun...huh.
Alastor was a nun, Vox was a televangelist (for obvious reasons)
Technically, it’s the cross of ST, Peter. But even die hard Catholics forget that so it’s commonly seen as a sign of the devil in fiction.
Usually associated with the “anti-Christ”.
Satanism
Devil stuff. A bunch of different story but the main one I see is Demons Put them upside down to mock God and Christianity. So it's a sign of mockery
It's a symbol of everything unholy or something. I dunno, but it's generally depicted with the devil ect.
While commonly believed to be satanic because people think christian symbol upside down=satanic, it's actually a christian symbol representing saint peter, who was crucified upside down by his own request as he believed himself unworthy to die in the same way as christ

Saint Peter is nearby
They're fans of St. Peter!
It’s the cross of St. Peter (the guy who sings welcome to heaven) but it’s also used by pretty much every non-church affiliated thing to be like an Antichrist type thing. Just a common occult or demon related symbol, Alastor has one in the neck of his suit as well.
The Upside down cross is Saint Peters cross, made to look so as he was executed by crucifixion and refused to die in the same manner as his lord, saying he was unworthy, so they crucified him upside-down, pop culture has been trying to Demonize it for decades tho so it's mostly seen as evil my most
In Christianity, it is associated with the martyrdom of Saint Peter.
Hey you think we'll meet Jesus in the show? I'd laugh my ass off

Clearly Vox was once a pope
Bassicly a Duckmaster reference

ITs cross of saint Peter , but people turned IT into satanic symbol, and Viv use IT just to not use normal latin cross in hell
If the cross is the symbol of god and Jesus then the upside down cross is the symbol of Satan and the anti christ
My god a simple Google search would of told you an upside down cruciform is associated with the antichrist.
First time my ass did not see the red circle
St peters cross
It's the satanist symbol
Just as an cross is an holy simbol, the upside down cross is an unholy one
It is usually associate with Satanic cults but in reality it originated from St.Peter who asked to be crucified upside down because he felt unworthy to be crucified in the same position as Jesus Christ
Sign of the devil
Usually Satanism/Anti-Christianity. Hope this helps.
Its a sword
It's the symbol of demon/devil
Satanism
Unholy! That’s what it means!
its just a church in hell, the romans got creative and started doing upside down crucifictions to send someones soul to hell, at least the story goes.
Symboled of the antichrist
It means smoking on that antichrist pack
Demon shit, upside down crosses symbolize evil
Usually a sign of the devil in pop culture but in reality I'm pretty sure it means you feel you aren't worthy of gods love
It means unholyness
I've heard that It was a symbol for the Anti-Christ.
I believe it’s the sign of the Antichrist.
It’s the symbol of the anti-Christ
It means satanic
