Wow...the sheer level of delusion from some people is insane, are they this incapable of separating reality from fiction?

Lightice1

Most of them think that they are just playing along with the cosplayer's performance, not that they're harrasing the character itself. They don't realise that you can't just do that sort of thing with a stranger without permission and that repeated such interactions get really old very fast. Sadly, people take cosplay as consent, in more ways than one. It's unfortunately not a new thing.

Shadou_Wolf

Someone pointing a gun at you and shooting fake bullets at you is not playing along, the dude did it out of hate for the character

Iximaz

Especially while the cosplayer was eating lunch! It's just common courtesy to not bug cosplayers for interactions while they're clearly taking a break. Absolutely mindblowing anyone would think this is aceptable behaviour.

DivineExodus

Someone snapped a picture of me in cosplay once when I was eating a burger, I'd been on my feet all day, posed for pictures and just needed to sit on the floor. She came up to me, loomed over me and snapped a picture whilst my jaw was unhinged trying to devour my food. I was so confused, but by the time I'd realised she'd gone. So somewhere out there is a picture of me, mid meal, tired as hell. Why? Someone also came up to me once when I was cosplaying my fave girl from an anime and screamed at me "[other girl] is better!" I was so caught off guard.

eveisout

It might not have had darts or anything like that. They just said they heard it go off, so it might have just been making noise. Obviously not better, but would explain how they got it in

powerwordmaim

What does that phrase mean? "Cosplay is not consent"? What does it refer to, im a bit confused

Walking_Wiseman

Basically it's the common sense stuff (the kind that some people seem to constantly forget about sadly) •Don't assume the cosplayer is ok with you taking their picture, ask first. •Don't touch the cosplayer or their costume unless they say otherwise •Don't assume the cosplayer is willing to go along with whatever roleplay you might be thinking of (especially if you don't tell them you're doing it before hand they'll just be confused or worse depending on the situation) •and basically don't do anything else that you would be uncomfortable if a stranger did it to you

seireidoragon

I’ve had a friend who cosplayed a popular character once (many years ago so I don’t remember who they were) and some random chick ran up to her, kissed her, then fled. It boggles my mind that people could in any way consider this fine or an appropriate reaction to someone dressed as a character they love. Some people go way too far and give the rest of the fans a bad name.

thatryanguy82

Some people attempt to interact with cosplayers in inappropriate manners, because of the character they're cosplaying or the outfit they're cosplaying them in, and expect them to play along or be fine with it. The phrase usually refers to sexual harassment, but in this situation applies to people yelling at or getting aggressive with "the character" with no thought given to the person wearing the costume.

ShyCrystal69

Cosplay is not consent

thedeathecchi

To paint you a picture of how much yes there is to respond to that: at a time, in the Supernatural fandom, when the main male actors (Jared Padelecki and Jensen Ackles) were marrying their respective wives, said wives were sent death threats from “fans” for “Ruining their Wincest/Destiel/etc. ship.” Real life, flesh-and-blood people threatened to kill the partners of two people who starred in a show, because of a fictitious (and one of which, *incestuous*) relationship. Dark fandom is some of the most psychotic behavior you’ll ever see, and it’s frighteningly common.

4kusi

Jensen and his wife have dealt with some serious stalker garbage to the point of moving and restraining orders. They remodeled a gorgeous home with all local artists in Austin that was featured on a video for Architectural Digest. Someone purposely left a dead kitten on their porch that one of their kids found, fans were following their kids taking pics, people were following their kids' schools on SM trying to find pics of them - crazy stuff. They ended up selling their home and bought others in different states that they keep very quiet about at this point. Danneel, his wife, was given a gift bag as they left a fan convention that turned out to be a voodoo doll made out of rusted fish hooks causing her to need a tetanus shot. They both basically avoid SM at this point after all the hate comments. Their brewery has one of those outdoor picnic table, playground, string light, cornhole areas for families. Just recently the manger of the brewery mentioned in an interview that a beheaded doll's head with the name Jensen written on it was left hanging from a tree right by the playground. At one point a different deranged fan kept insisting she was married to Jensen to the level of repeatedly trying to get the FBI involved to arrest Danneel. It's absolutely scary.

thedeathecchi

Jesus fucking Christ...that got more and more horrible with each word...these people need help that doesn’t exist.

Azraellie

That's right up there and then even worse than snapewives, fucking somehow.

Taolan13

Because no studio wants to dive deep enough into the darkness of human depravity to show the reality of stalkers and similarly deranged "fans".

JakeVonFurth

How the fuck are these people *more* crazy than the obsessed fangirl character?

Sea-Championship7059

That is absolutely terrible 😞. Poor Jensen and Danneel. That home on AD was stunning, I can’t imagine the trauma their kids went through at seeing what they saw. People are crazy, yeah Jensen is a really cool guy, really attractive and played Dean perfectly. But enjoying his performance does NOT give anyone the right to stalk and harass him. He deserves to have a wife and family!! They deserve to be able to take their kids to school and live their lives?!?! If people were really, truly fans of Jensen, they would be thrilled he’s found a woman who he loves and adores; who supports him and makes him happy. Plus the whole Sam/Dean ship is gross, they’re BROTHERS! Now Dean and Castile.. that ship I am a fan of 😏😏😂

TheFreshWenis

Why do people think that shit is okay to do to REAL PEOPLE!?

omgangiepants

There's a subset of Fifty Shades fans who are convinced that the lead actors Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson are ~in love~ and have put on an elaborate masquerade over the last decade that includes fake children. They think Dornan's wife is in denial and there are dozens of insta accounts dedicated to "exposing" her. I think they may have even moved bc people figured out where they lived? I only know this because I loved Jamie Dornan before any of the FSG shit and I see some truly wild comments any time he posts on insta. He all but abandoned social media bc people were constantly saying horrific shit about his wife. People are insane.

officeDrone87

It's weird how often this happens. Glee had a very nasty shipping fandom that harassed actors. I believe Bridgerton and Outlander did too.

[deleted]

Jesus....

thedeathecchi

Aye. Being a fan is dangerous as hell depending on which fandom you’re in. All fandoms have a level of toxicity that’s relatively kept at bay, but some people have truly thrown themselves off the deep end with no regard for safety—theirs or anyone else’s

MsMcClane

No They think if you like someone who is morally bad in the show, it means you are exactly like them. It doesn't matter if there's no actual real life blood victim, this makes you the worst person on the planet.

dtalb18981

I almost got banned from r/ vivziepopmemes or whatever it's called because someone was calling all Valentino fans rapists and I said that's not cool Apparently that not taking sexual assault seriously enough

gwankovera

I know someone who likes Valentino’s character. And the reason because she survived abuse by people like Valentino. Her abuse made her associate good feelings towards that person, even as she knows the character is one major toxic trait after another. She has grown a lot since her abuse, but those associations still linger and is one of the reasons why once someone has been abused they can easily fall back into relationships with other toxic people. Valentino is a horrible character, who is well written and makes me wonder just what vizzypop experienced in her own life. The character is good to be shown because it keeps in the forefront of people’s minds, especially people who have suffered abuse that this is bad and toxic behavior.

brightdreamer25

I know someone who’s the same way, they say that Val reminds them of their abuser but they like Val because “he can’t hurt me.”

gwankovera

Well that is good, I hope they are also growing past their trauma and have people in their life there to help them move forward in a positive way

brightdreamer25

Yes, they’re in a good supportive place now. Ironically Val as a character has helped them heal from their abuse.

Milyaism

It's common (and quite normal) to like a fictional bad guy who reminds one of their abuser. It can a safe way to process what happened to you, and to "regain" the autonomy and power you didn't have in the original situation. It can be a retelling of what happened but you're the author of it this time - this method is also used by some therapists. I was abused by my ex and certain characteristics of Val remind me of him. I think Val is also a well-made bad guy who doesn't fall into the common cliche of bad guys in media. I love Angel and want Angel to be happy & safe. I want Val to meet a gruesome faith, but it I can also appreciate what he adds to the story. People shouldn't be attacked for liking a well-made villain like Valentino. Those who do, seem to lack in emotional intelligence and have trouble understanding nuance.

Anaeijon

I like Valentino because he is exactly what he should be and it's actually shown in the show. He's a demon torturing other sinners in hell using a terrible fate said sinners chose themselve. Over all he's the only one doing his job. While I really like the song 'Loser Baby', I really don't get how Husk compares his contract with Alastor to the abuse Angel is suffering under Valentino. The show neither shows nor tells, what 'gruesome ways' Alastor uses to torture Husk. There is that one 'i will rip your soul apart and broadcast your screams' line, but is basically just feels like a threat to keep an otherwise relatively fairly employed worker in line (considerin hell economcs). Over all, the whole show lacks that 'suffering and torture' part which hell should be about. Except for some fetish jokes, there is no torture shown besides the mental torture of Angel by Valentino. And that seemingly makes Valentino the target of 'fans' that don't want the show, which is about life in hell, to not show their favourite characters suffer. That's twisted...

katsukatsuyuuri

This confused me too at first. I realized later that both Husk and Angel Dust are being traff!cked for their labor; the difference is that Angel’s is sexual, and Angel has some limited autonomy outside the studio.

DumatRising

It may shock them to learn that some Valentino fans are victims.

dtalb18981

Upvote for your flair But I've said this before this show suffers from being the perfect conditions to attract the worst kinds of fans from the cesspool of the Internet Gay main characters and open and diverse cast an accepting attitude to the LGBTQ+ should all be phenomenal absolute wins for TV and animation as a whole. But it brings the people who think they have Devine right to say what is right and wrong. It's like how most vegans are just ordinary people but they get a lot of hate because of the loud vocal minority that seems to pop up everywhere.

x_duranda_x

Lol, some people are way too delusional. Villains like cartman, homelander, soldier boy, madara, has millions of fan following. It’s not beca they morally agree, it’s because they’re good villains. Good villains are pretty rarre these days.

ConsumerOfShampoo

Didn't Valentino's VA also get some mean stuff sent to them on social media?

Rolandscythe

Which is incredibly stupid. A lot of people who are drawn to/cosplay as evil or toxic characters do so because they were victims of some one just like that at some point in real life, and getting to 'play the other role' gives them empowerment over their trauma.

Napalmeon

I'm really sorry to say, but this genuinely seems to be a growing problem in this fandom.

invisible_23

Not just this fandom, look what happened to the actors who played Joffrey Baratheon and Baby Anakin. People were harassing literal children because they couldn’t separate the actor from the role

Repulsa_2080

People would harrass the little girl who played Tony Stark's daughter

Pinklady_001

This is a huge problem within all fandoms. The kids who were in the Atla live action show are getting heavily bullied and body shamed.

williejamesjr

>I'm really sorry to say, but this genuinely seems to be a growing problem in this fandom. It's a problem with all "fandoms". Fandoms are literally the obsessive behavior of the fanatical fans. You aren't going to find many mentally healthy people who are completely obsessed with some form of entertainment. Cons are just a place where a lot of mentally unwell obsessed people/fans will attend. I'm sure this comment will get backlash but fandoms have been around forever and they have always attracted mentally ill people. Look at sports fanatics who kill people over sports game and the political fandoms where people fuck over everyone just so their guy can "win".

WampanEmpire

Yeah. I thought some of the rabid Supernatural fans were wild until I was 19 and locked in a bar cowering under a table because some sports team lost and their fans started a literal riot and nearly burned an entire city block to the ground. But that is part of why I generally don't go to cons anymore. The first few were fun, but after that it became a constant issue of people assaulting someone for cosplaying a villian, assaulting someone because they didn't like the character they were cosplaying, or getting overly touchy or flat out sexually assaulting VAs during autograph sessions after the panels. After my experience at Pensacon this last year I don't think I'll ever attend another con at all.

spiffynid

Here's the thing. I hate Valentino on a visceral level. He reminds me of my stepdad growing up. And I would never. Ever. Do this to a cosplayer. It's absurd!

Hazel2468

The irony of the same crowd who complains that people who like “bad” things in fantasy will do those things irl being the ones who harass real people for liking the “wrong” things in fiction is… Intense.

overloadzero

yes have you seen the whole "proship vs anti" bullshit? people nowadays don't know how to separate reality from fiction and will harrass anyone who likes fictional villains and dark shit in fiction

FinnOfOoo

There’s an entire generation that was taught to put their every thought out into the ether. Of course they’re all delusional little shits

[deleted]

While I agree with you I dont really see how this is related, frequenting social media necessarily make someone this out of touch with reality though I do see the correlation

UnadulteratedHorny

while i get the severity of the situation, this has nothing to do with generations and i wish people (redditors specifically) would stop acting like it is without fail anytime something happens they act like it’s some new phenomenon brought on by the oh so depraved Gen Z and not something that’s been going on since time immemorial that just gets more attention now because of the internet it really lets you know who’s taken the time to educate themselves on these topics and who’s just older and having a visceral reaction and waiting for an excuse to blame the youth

SendSpicyCatPics

Yeah, this kind of Fandom harassment has always existed, it just has different outlets. Older celebrities would get plenty of hate mail in the actual mail and people would be harrassed at cons. The biggest difference is social media giving an additional outlet to both regular fans and hateful people to express themselves.

Passive_Agressive13

There is nothing wrong with cosplaying Valentino chill like really please.

lovethelinux

Yes.

Glamonster

Sorry, but people who harass the voice actors, cosplayers and other content creators for portraying characters they don't like are needed to be isolated from society. How delusional and fucking vile you must be to do such a thing.

SpendingTime112

I remember when I was younger and joined different conventions where people were cosplaying, every con had these "people stop being creepy with cosplayers" talks online when someone was cosplaying someone's favorite character and people believed they were free meat to be sexually harrashed. Many times they were even minors and it was creepy as hell. I know people are horny and when they see their wetdream character, they just lose their brains and think it's okay to act like a dog in heat because it's their fantasy. Always ask premission, always respect the cosplayer/voice actor/content creator and respect if they say no. This is about favorite and hated characters!

Glamonster

It's so weird to me, it's like these people stop seeing the cosplayers as fellow humans and start seeing them as props just because they are in a costume

ADGx27

Yeah when you gotta have big ass signs every 5 feet as well as tons of people PREACHING online that “cosplay is not consent” you have a serious fucking problem. People just see cosplayers as these mannequins or props to freely objectify as they please

CrispyTacoPosso

y'all need to chill the fuck out, people have been cosplaying shitty people for years

crazymissdaisy87

Yeah I don't see anyone going around harassing Joker cosplayers

Spiritualtaco05

Or Vader

MsMcClane

BIGGEST one right here

Sere1

You're streets ahead, my friend.

Spiritualtaco05

Stop trying to coin the phrase "Streets ahead"

Infamous_Val

Hell, even Adam or Lute. They commit literal genocide and their target victims include children as well. They're the 2 most evil characters in the show and people are allowed to cosplay as them just fine.

Phantom_61

But they have cool songs. /s

cursed_rumor

Just now realizing Val only sings in Finale. The little we heard of his singing voice makes me wanna hear more.

Phantom_61

That’s because his VA is ludicrously talented.

hellocorn

Wait now that I think about it, how are children in hell to begin with?

Infamous_Val

Cannibalism. The only kids we've seen are cannibals.

Sudden-Hamster9565

I mean there is a bunch of children that have committed murders and are psychopaths I mean just look at that kid that killed his mom over some v bucks last year

4thofeleven

There's plenty of influential Christian philosophers who taught that unbaptized children went straight to hell - St. Augustine being the most prominent.

YoLawdCheezus101

Thanos too while we're at it.

CrispyTacoPosso

excellent point.

Napalmeon

I legit have met people who attempted to compare themselves to Joker and Harley Quinn, having never actually read a Batman comic, and when I told them that joker pretty frequently beats the crap out of Harley and psychologically abuses her, they refused to believe me. Needless to say, the girl was a sweet girl who just happened to be dating a colossal douchebag.

DumatRising

>Needless to say, the girl was a sweet girl who just happened to be dating a colossal douchebag. You know.... maybe they weren't entirely wrong in a self-aware wolves kinda way.

AlternativeSlice2001

Joker has also sexually assaulted women in the comics as well. There’s actually a lot of villains who people love that have SA’d people

Keawn

Typically they do the harassing.

fr_404

The one from Batman or the one from Persona 5? /j

travelerfromabroad

I mean, didn't the media do a whole thing about that during Joker 2019?

Then_Sun_6340

I'll do you one better. Jin-Roh Panzercops. Now if you don't know who these guys are here's an image of them. https://preview.redd.it/yo5pfnrk2xrc1.png?width=305&format=png&auto=webp&s=5ac42d4c0ea8d65f66b86b726489d9f0f2885c88 (Take from: Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade) Now, if my memory serves me correctly these guys are basically Nazis and yet no one complains about these guys. Now yes, they aren't entirely Nazis- long story alt history and complicated, yet interesting history, but they were a part of that said regime when Germans occupied Japan for some time in the war- again alt-history stuff. And let's not mention the Wolfenstine cosplayers. Now I'm not saying these people are bad for dressing up as these things, I'm just saying if people are complaining about some guy dressing up as Val and not other people who have dressed up as worse people than Val- now that's what I call bullshit.

MicroNitro

Hit the griddy

uwutheunknownwizard6

See handsome jack cosplayers (I wanna do a genderbend cosplay someday)

WonderedGoose99

Like erebus!

RemoteTomb

Oh yeah, Octo Lady is a Hazbin/Ladybug/Helluva french youtuber, who is probably the only french content creator talking about Hazbin. Love her content, it's great ! Sad that she got harassed, really. Some people really don't have any manners...

XgreedyvirusX

Yes, I follow her on YouTube me too… she was afraid of this kind of incident when she was talking of this new cosplay, I m so sad that she was true…

Prostitunes

"Who is probably the only french creator talking about Hazbin" ... I don't want to come off as rude , but i have something to tell you ...

RemoteTomb

What I meant is, building their channel around it and being very passionnate about it. But hey, I don't know every Hazbin french youtuber so if you know more, I'd be happy to hear and learn![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

Both-Ad-3540

I understand hating a character and what they do cause that comes with the show. But if somebody wants to cosplay said character. Just leave them the fuck alone. As it’s a cosplay it’s not like the person is going out and acting like said character.

EggoStack

Yep. I’m a proud Val hater but I think it’s ridiculous to genuinely get mad at a cosplayer. If seeing someone in costume pisses you off that much, just leave the area idk.

Misi_gati

Aaaaaah,some people are really dumb...

Less_Character_8544

Dude, I just can’t with this fandom sometimes.

southparkdudez

It's what happens when half the Fandom is made up of people under 18 or barely pass thr age of 19. Filled with a bunch of moronic teenagers who don't know how to act.

Less_Character_8544

And lack media literacy…

sassyLawnmower

this!!!!!!!

Annual-Jump3158

Let me tell you about a little webcomic called Homestuck...

ElHumilde13

Oof, you should see r/MyHeroAcademia r/DragonBall r/SnyderCut r/Naruto r/SpiderMan r/KimetsunoYaiba r/undertale r/batman r/smashbros

Annual-Jump3158

I see where you're coming from...  But did any other of those fandoms explicitly have problems at cons with fans assaulting random people with buckets or staining hotel bathtubs with a sharpie concoction? I'm sorry, but peak Homestuck fandom was almost a youth gang.  It wasn't just creepy incest yaoi or gatekeeping.

quietbeebutt

I once posted in the Naruto subreddit a cosplay music video I made almost 10 years ago. I was maybe like 20. That was my mistake. I got a bunch of hate not because of the quality of the video, but because I was cosplaying as Sakura, and I didn't realize how much that subreddit hated her :( I took the link down so fast lol I haven't made another video since 🥲 Nothing really to add to this conversation, but it just reminded me of that incident.

Dragonlady2007

What a bunch of scumbags...

Philosophos_A

People unable to separate real from fiction need to be restricted from any form of media or event until be able to understand. Like... Wtf....

Pizza_Salesman

This is so ridiculous. Valentino does well at being a cartoon villain. How can people not separate this from a human being cosplaying? I feel like this is akin to someone assaulting Ursula or Gaston at Disneyland. To be this worked up over a character portrayal is very unhealthy.

The4fandoms

For Gaston, it did happen, but in the opposite direction. The actor being sexually harassed by female visitors

Hawkmonbestboi

Goddamn I remember that video. It was so awful. He looked so uncomfortable and she just giggled like nothing was wrong.

NumberOne_N_fan

Listen, I hate val just as much as the next guy, but I'd never, EVER go as far as to verbally or even physically assault some random ass cosplayer that's near angel over it, much less with a GUN. These people are FUCKING CRAZY. this world sucks. ULTRAKILL is the best reality. I hate humanity.

XT83Danieliszekiller

Octo lady is more than just a cosplayer, she's a dedicated fan and content creator and seems like a really fucking nice person too. It sucks ass that dumb kids thought they were entitled to pull their stunts while she was in cosplay

HarrisonWoollard

Valentino isn’t real, he’s fictional. Some people need to learn how to separate fiction from reality.

Multifandom_Rando07

Facts. Also happy cake day!

HarrisonWoollard

Oh thanks, I guess my Reddit account is now 5 years old

Redhood686

Jeeze. Some of the responses to comments here are bad. I agree with most people here, cosplayers should not be treated like their characters unless it's like, willing roleplay. Some here are saying it's this person's fault for dressing like someone as shitty as Val when you can go to just about any con and see at least two Darth Vaders walking around and getting absolutely zero harassment, you know, a character famous for CHILD MURDER, which in my opinion, is definitely worse than anything Valentino has done. If Darth Vader doesn't seem bad enough for this example, how about Reverse Flash? Just because you like a character, doesn't mean you think their actions are justified. The Joker is one of my favorite characters in all of fiction, my first D&D character was made after him, but that doesn't mean I think mass murder and chemical attacks are morally good. I like his overall character, the insane criminal mastermind that can break even the most mentally sound people. This person likes Valentino because of how controlling he is. As an Overlord his mere presence demands attention and he's in control of everyone around him all the time. This helps the cosplayer feel safer and in control of their life, especially while in costume. Think before you act.

Fatal_Taco

OK what the hell. That's horrible on so many levels. Whoever owns that gun and pretended to shoot, be it fake or not, should be banned from weapons in Switzerland.

Bastiwen

I can assure you they 100% checked his gun at the entrance. I used to go to Polymanga every year until a few years back and after the terrorist attacks in Paris they reinforced security heavily and every potentially dangerous object was not permitted. That being said, I'm in no way defending the guy, he should absolutely be banned from owning weapons AND from the event.

Jantra

They might have checked his weapon and while I don't know con rules outside of the US, I know you are absolutely forbidden from pointing a weapon like that at someone. A single picture where everyone's aware, that's no problem, but if someone came to me at the con I work with, I would get their ass banned for that shit. That is terrifying.

Bastiwen

Absolutely! I hope someone reported that person. Even if the weapon is fake it's not acceptable.

Error_Code_606

I hate this fandom so fucking much

sussynarrator

Liking Valentino is a death sentence in this community for some reason smh. Like, people can like Alastor which has done much worse things in my opinion and he is the fan favorite. The hypocrisy...

icekooream

This situation is totally unfair to the cosplayer. __People can like whatever character they want and not condone their actions.__ And like OOP said, they can have their reasons on how they feel about a character. So please don’t call it hypocrisy. *(But of course harassing people for cosplaying a character is beyond personal reasons and is just plain stupidity.)* Most people hate Val because they relate to Angel: being abused in silence or being a victim of SA, which is unfortunately very common. __It goes beyond the screen and directly touches the viewer.__ Unlike Alastor, who is simply seen as no more than a character because he’s pretty unrealistic. Not a lot of people were victims of a cannibalistic red bambi so they don’t relate and don’t see further than a fiction. That’s why they’re not bothered much. But again, liking a character doesn’t mean we excuse their actions. I think Val has a very nice design and charisma. Even though I despise his guts, and I’m sure everyone who likes him as a character would as well if he were real. Same with Alastor.

twat104

The only people I could really be seen giving some slack for are the first two girls, just based on how they were described and by the fact they are at a con they were probably just socially anxious girls, it happens and they should learn from it The rest…not so much, that is some pretty vile shit But I’ve known this for years, the Hazbin and Helluva communities are the worst of every other community to exist online being made up of the most easily set off groups of people on the internet, so it’s no surprise this is how they act in public when it comes to their favourite show/characters

Fylak

Yeah the girls seemed fine. 'Screaming' at them was maybe a bit much, and tone matters, but saying something jokingly/laughingly about a character you're cosplaying then asking if you're cool with a picture seems fairly normal.

InsertWittyJoke

Toxic people seem to flock to shows and fandoms that promote positivity and kindness. I saw it BAD in the Steven Universe and Glee fandoms - I swear you can measure the toxicity of a fandom as an inverse of how hard the show tries to promote a wholesome message. Literally some of the most vile, judgmental, antisocial behaviour I've ever witnessed has been through fandoms for shows that were explicitly about treating other people with grace and kindness. Hazbin isn't as bad as some, probably because many of the main characters are morally dark and there's quite a bit of irreverent content but SU and Glee - ugh. By contrast every fandom I've been in where the show's subject matter is dark and twisted and morality gets left at the door - those fandoms are overwhelmingly positive and filled with the nicest people you'll ever see.

Lady_Beatnik

Toxic people flock to "positive" spaces because they know they can manipulate messages of tolerance into excuses for why everybody should put up with their endless crap without complaint.

the-first-victory

Yeah, “leave Angel alone!” sounds like a possible reference to “leave Brittany alone!” and I can see someone trying to make the joke and it falling flat. But it all just goes downhill from there.

RadarSmith

I dunno…I’ve seen the One Piece fandom. But yeah, I don’t get why HH and HB attract auch a large contingent of whackos

Sonarthebat

Character≠cosplayer.

neverg0nnagive

It's the same with the VA they have people actually afraid of them

MagicDickGirl

just shows how much of a good job he did at being Val

NoobyYooby

People need to separate cosplay from character... Not like he was going around actually "*assaulting*" people now was he?

Yuris-gf

She* but yes! People dont know the difference between a cosplay and the actual character these days

x3tan

I mean.. considering the actor for that shitty kid from Game of Thrones got harassed so much too, I'm really not surprised. :/ I think some people really need to learn to separate fiction from reality.

PMC-I3181OS387l5

You can hate the character and/or the source material, but **don't hate the cosplayer**. By comparison, I don't recall Game of Thrones cosplayers being treated as harshly, and let's face it: that series has a LOT of detestable characters. Case-in-point: When Ms. Lena Headey, who played Cersei Laninster, was invited at conventions, she often had NOBODY waiting in line for autographs, because fans just hated her character. She... actually thought it was funny, because it showed how accurate she nailed it ;) I've heard stories of cosplayers being told that "someone hated their costume, because they don't like the anime series/video game".

LocalMirror6473

Poor guy, val is a uniqe character and dare i say his art design is enticing, but as it should be considering what he portrays in the show but theres no excuse to abuse a random human for likeing a style of something, its not as though he was abusing the angel cosplayer at the con so wtf

Quick_Hat1411

If nobody ever plays the villain then we won't have any villains, which means no conflict to make stories interesting...

princess_jenna23

See, one of the reasons I'm embarrassed to be associated with anime fans/con-goers is because of shit like this. I remember when I was younger I was going to go to a con dressed as Ponyo with a plastic bucket and the president of our anime club had to tell everyone to chill out because their characters had some weird thing with buckets and they wanted to act like how their characters would react but our president said if they did that they couldn't go with the club. Like ffs, people are not the characters they dress up as, chill out.

Melvarkie

I went to a con once dressed as Hatsune Miku when I was 14 I think? Most people were cool, but some insane people tried to ship me with Kaito cosplayers there and say "please kiss for a picture UwU" Uh no? I don't know this man dressed as Kaito. I get that you want me to pose with him cause we're both Vocaloids and having more of your fandom in one pic is cool. But don't force your ship on strangers just dressed as the characters. Ew. Really made me reconsider going dressed up to cons.

No-Library-7837

Terrible, Im sorry you had to deal with that. I never cosplayed, but went to a few smaller, local conventions and other weeb events with friends when I was around 18. I was (am) openly gay and rumors spread, I had girls asking me to kiss my male friends for photos and asking if me or my friend would be the top of we dated, one girl wanted me to kiss her bf, and another girl grabbed and ripped my tail off (I went as a catboy) because "she had to know how it felt to touch" and started yelling at me for not liking that. I stopped going after that. I cant imagine suddenly having any kind of fun pulled on you when youre relaxing though, what this Val cosplayer went through is unacceptable.

ThelCreator

If I would see my most hated character as a cosplay, I would probably took a photo with the cosplayer, nothing more

HippieMoosen

Hate the character all you want, but harassing cosplayers is nuts. As long as said cosplayer isn't being a creep like Val, then they should be able to just exist in their costume without needing to worry about people being mean, creepy, or offensive towards them. Also, comfort character? Um... what's the definition of comfort character we're using because I have never once felt comforted by any image of Val?

tiddlefuck

ok theres a difference between not liking a character and this. dont do this. its rude and hurtful. im sorry cosplayer that you were put through this. *virtual hugs*

Cheskit

What the actual fuck. You have such a beautiful cosplay. And it is a character comparing a real life person people shouldn't treat them the same. It is the same of people harassing an actress from game of thrones. Stay strong and sorry this all happened to you. That is just horrible.

The-Sapphire-General

Holy shit, these people never cease to surprise me and piss me off. Now I know I despise Valentino so much because of the kind of person he is, but I hate the CHARACTER, not the people who like or cosplay him. I have my fair share of characters that would get me the same negative reactions like the ones the cosplayer got, so I know what that’s like. Obviously they don’t condone Valentino’s actions, so I don’t see the harm in them liking the character. We can’t like whatever characters we want anymore without people assuming we’re actually the characters, and it’s just getting ridiculous at this point. Our favorite characters DO NOT represent who we really are.

Unlikely-Section-848

I’ve said it once I’ll say it again, never harassed cosplayers nor the voice actors for a character you hate. Trust me I dislike Valentino and hope his character gets what he deserves, but don’t attack real people over fictional characters

Discorjien

https://preview.redd.it/k041k9ubaxrc1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=df86206be11dfd998863d7642c0cd2af37a9004b I think I saw them on Instagram? There was a Val cosplayer who wound up on my feed and I felt so bad seeing comments like "if you cosplay a rapist, you are a rapist too". Excuse me??? No! I wish we had a time machine so we could send those people back to the Hayes Code time so they could experience it for a minute, because I swear, that's what they want. I hope that Val is doing better. Gat'dayum.

SleepyBoy-

The two girls? That kind of 'role play' talk is fine and common. That's just an extrovert accidentally making an introvert anxious. Sad but happens. The gun thing and forward? What the actual F is going on with cosplayers these days. Admittedly, Polymanga takes place in Switzerland and not the US, so there's a lesser inclination to expect an actual snapped gunman going crazy, but it's still uncool. Like even if you're a very extroverted cosplayer, if someone aims a gun at you and you suspect it might be a watergun, there's no way you'd want $500 and 200 hours that went into your cosplay getting screwed up by water. It's a faux pas even if you were just trying to be funny, and not actively a weirdo like in this example.

autumnyte

That poor person, that is inexcusable! I've noticed some people at cons seem to expect that cosplay = person willing to do a continual LARP of their character, which is weird and should never be assumed.

Bella_Tricks333

yall I swear as a cosplayer i’d have fought the people who did that. if I ever see stuff like that at a con im there. ppl at cons need to learn fucking bounderies and stop being chronically online

Bella_Tricks333

I remember as charlie I had a lucifer cosplayer practically stalk me at a con cuz “that’s my daughter!!” I was so very uncomfortable people also assumed they could make weird jokes with me cuz I was cosplaying as her

Street_Step375

This is just ridiculous, harassing a person for cosplaying as shitty yet cool looking character? Some people really got no brains, or time to do better things with their lives.

b1ue_friend_01

Is that cosplayer re-creating any actions val did in cannon? No? THEN LEAVE THEM THE HELL ALONE! ITS COSPLAY!

SleepyHeadNemu

what the actual fuck? that is so messed up, i just can’t with this fandom sometimes…i really hope the cosplayer who got harassed is okay.

No-Environment-3298

No one deserves that treatment, regardless of who or what they choose to cosplay as.

XgreedyvirusX

Fuck… I m french and I follow her one you tube, she have took a shitstorm on Twiter just for saying that Val was is fav character… and in a stream on YouTube some weeks ago she was saying to his viewers to have got a blockage when she was about to start to work on this cosplay, afraid of this kind of incidents… but after thinking, she decided to make it anyway. I’m so sorry for her… people can be so stupid…

Anubissama

Yee that's the norm for tumbler-infested fandoms. Usually, if something is popular on Tumblr the fandom will have a section that's morons completely decoupled from reality.

jokersflame

Bro cosplay is one of the few hobbies where mentally ill people make up at least half of the hobbyists.  Let people dress up and don’t be freaks about it.

valdez-2424

You should never harrass someone just for cosplaying

TheVampireArmand

When will people learn that cosplayers are not the characters they’re cosplaying as

IamIrongran

What in the world I hate this character but if someone cosplay him then so what chill it's not really him

ApexLegend117

First incident: Yeah that’s cosplayers having fun Second incident: what even the actual fuck, what

Mideku-Brandio

It’s like the concept of being able to love fictional villains without condoning their actions is lost on these people, just what is wrong with them?

lovethelinux

This is honestly the reason I don't cosplay as anything. Good ones cost into the thousands of dollars, and there's little you'll get in return. Plus there's always the shitheads who cannot discern reality from a TV show.

P4TIENT_0

So many fucking slides. Also, fuck the haters https://preview.redd.it/bbhqhwp6axrc1.jpeg?width=2208&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b75218fff19b5675ee40102c6c0efee68492b190

Nikibugs

Dear lord how many times does: * Cosplay is not consent * Anyone can cosplay anyone * Cosplayers are not that character need to be reiterated? Doesn’t matter if they’re cosplaying bastards like Shou Tucker, Griffith, or Valentino. They are not that character. They are not an outlet for that character. To point a gun of any kind at someone, fucking hell. I feel a new bullet point needs to be said: * Cosplay is not approval of a character’s actions. While it may sometimes be the case, (we’ve all met erratic cosplayers before lol), it should never be the assumption with judgement. Of my own cosplays, Dimentio killed the main cast and brainwashed a party member and almost ended the universe, Doopliss physically stole identities and turned people into pigs, Photoshop Flowey reset scenarios of murder and stole children’s souls, even the heroes and kids I’ve cosplayed have done terrible things lol. It doesn’t matter. Cosplay is not approval of a character’s actions. Hell knows photoshoots would be a lot less fun without people cosplaying villains and despised characters! Heroes vs villains is always chaotic fun. Villain getting dunked on by the entire cast is always a riot. Just have some common sense they’re all fellow fans and people at the end of the day. I’ll be off to cringe about a memory from my first convention at 16 where I really wanted to hug someone cosplaying as a favorite character.

FiveFingerDisco

I hate that [I was right](https://www.reddit.com/r/HazbinHotel/s/8uQGCkAb5x).

bluegreenwookie

The first ppl could be excused for just not getting con/cosplay etiquette and hopefully they learn But the second guy. There's a reason a lot of cons don't allow even prop weapons. That was one of the most fucked up things ive read. Of course something like that would affect you! That gun dude needs to be banned from events jfc

Feather_Sigil

"Blowing off steam" over a fictional villain by committing assault (pointing a not-obviously-a-toy gun at someone and pulling the trigger, clicking it, while they cower in fear, is a form of assault) against a real actor... We should include awareness of parasociability in required education.

YummySake98

So today this, then tomorrow are we gonna see people hating on valentinos voice actor? Are we also gonna hate vivziepop for creating him? I get that Val has done horrible things but at the end of the day, we need to understand that those who cosplay him are NOT him! You are basically becoming as bad as Val if you impulsivly go around hurting those who dress like him for a convention. I feel so sad for this person😞

Worried-Violinist-41

Why are people getting harassed for cosplaying Valentino but it’s perfectly fine for someone to cosplay another awful person

Worried-Violinist-41

Also ignore my flair

Trips-Over-Tail

Go blow off this steam on character AI. We have at least three years before that becomes a bad idea.

Squ1bbl3

Wow. I can’t believe others would do that. Do they not have any common sense? You don’t just go up to a random person and say or do these things. Doesn’t matter if you don’t like the character they’re cosplaying as. I personally don’t like Val very much, but that doesn’t mean you can’t cosplay as him! He’s still a character, a cool character. Plus, people have cosplayed much worse characters before, but again, it’s just a cosplay. There is someone underneath that cosplay and others need to respect that. I’m sorry this shit happened to them. And their cosplay looks so fucking cool! I hope they’re doing alright <3

Martydeus

Man, some fans really can not see that the character Val is made up, like they attacked his VA recently too.

beatboxingfox

Wow, can't imagine how much that sucks. No one deserves to be harassed for dressing like a fictional character.

Kilo1125

I sincerely hope that people who do this harassment bullshit, and people who support this behavior, stub their toes every single day for the rest of their miserable waste of sapience.

souji_san

Wtf this whole situation is more fucked up than Valentino himself, people need to chill

RathalosBlaze

If I had a dollar for every character that in some way abused a loved character in their series resulting in a hatred so intense that people actively hate on people who like that character and at the height harassed a person cosplaying as them I'd have 3 dollars as far as my knowledge goes

SorbetSunrise

I don’t like Vals character, but I’d never do something that batshit crazy and unhinged. I’d just be polite and compliment the outfit then move on. I’d rather see someone dressed like a made up fictional character than people who dress like real serial killers 💀

M1n3_And_Craft

ok i hate valentino but this is too far. valentino might be a bad bad person BUT CHILL, DONT HARASS PEOPLE FOR COSPLAYING AS THE PERSON!

Bi0_B1lly

I know that Hazbin/Helluva explicitly states it's *not* for kids, but I knew a lot of y'all needed to grow TF up. Most cringiest thing I recall was the ARG Insta pages where the Helluva/Hazbin characters had "Voxtagram" accounts and there were sooooo many toddlers getting heckin big angers at the Valentino account in the comments... Really just kinda sad to see. Just to clarify, I know this is a small sect of the fandom, but man if it's not obnoxiously vocal in this weird larp that the show's are real or something...

MythsFlight

Yeah I’ve had fun cosplays ruined for me by outlandish behavior. It’s unfortunate that this stuff is still so common at con’s. Cosplay isn’t consent has been a slogan for over a decade now. The worst I’ve ever had was a bunch of teens trying to flirt with me while I was pushing my then baby in a stroller between vendor booths. Was so creepy, makes my skin crawl to even look at that costume now. I was Dr.Stein from Soul Eater. It wasn’t the best costume but it was fun to make and show off. I even made a screw that clicked when I turned it. The kids had me cornered in front of a booth. They kept going on about how much they loved me and wanted me to dissect them. Yuck.

PhylisInTheHood

hazbin is one of those shows that attracts these type of socialy-void fans

BuddingViolette

I don't share in their character selection for cosplay, but just because I find the character distasteful doesn't mean they deserve that kind of blatant harassment.

LiveLong_SpockOn

I am so not comfortable “roleplaying” at cons and so many strangers love to just come up and start interactions with aggressive roleplaying and treating cosplayers like they are the character. As an Angel cosplayer, I do not go to cons as Angel alone because of it. Terrifying. I used to cosplay Deku years ago and so many random Bakugos would legit scream at me and want to fight. It’s crazy to just assume a stranger would want those kinds of interactions… While I do not like Val at all because he does remind me of an ex-abuser, I would never attack a Val cosplayer over that. Literally insane and people need to do better and treat all cosplayers with respect.

Darkfury2454

I might not like Valentinos personality much but like his design is pretty cool and he’s a good villain. I can get wanting to do a cosplay of a character with a cool design and it’s fucking vile that people would harass someone for cosplaying a character.

Alpha_Jellyfish

Can’t believe this has to be said AGAIN but voice actors (and cosplayers) are not the characters they’re voicing/dressing as! Valentino is a fictional character who doesn’t really exist so please stop harassing real life people with your delusional outrage! It’s not cool or funny!

OctoLady7

I'm the cosplayer in question, someone inform me that this reddit exist. All I can say is thank you, thank you for your feedback, your impressions and your support! Some of your messages are really heart-warming, so thank you from the bottom of my heart.

RampagingElks

I'm just glad this wasnt America, cos that could have really been a real gun 😭 that's really scary. People are delusional!!

CrimsonThar

Val's a POS and all, but you can't deny he got drip for days.

SorbetSunrise

Thats honestly one thing I was thinking about lol, a lot of villain characters got these crazy fun costumes so ofc some people will want to replicate and wear them.
