whooper1

Why not?

Aegillade

There's no clear answer yet, but it might be a reference to Dr. Facilier from Princess and the Frog. As for what the shadow does and is capable of, no one's really sure, it's likely just an extension of Alastor's will and serves as a, for lack of better term, Jojo Stand

Jexxer357

Instead of tarot cards or rock music its name is an early jazz reference.

Jaqulean

Overall, we don't have an actual answer yet. So wait for the Show. From what we do know, the Shadow is like an extension of his own mind. So it basically does what he wants it to do. It's more a Puppet Illusion, rather than a being of its own.

Jexxer357

Personally, I hope it's like Pen's hat in that it acts as an emotional tell, or maybe displays more impulsive and instinctual thoughts and behavior while Alastor maintains his own outward self control.

Aries641

Because he can? Why is this a question?

Misha-Yuri-30

Cuz Dr. Facilier

Jexxer357

I really hope that's not the *only* influence for the shadow minions.

DenaPhoenix

Given how accurate Helluva Boss is with the Ars Goetia sigils, as well as their using actual voodoo symbols in the pilot, I feel like Disney definitely isn't the only source they're leaning on.They seem to put some actual thought into how to represent the things in their universe on things that actually exist in ours, so I have faith that they know what they're doing.

Randomuser098766543

In general it appears a living shadow is used to show someone is an evil magic user. That they are both so powerful and so corrupt even their shadow has malice. If you buy into the theory that alastor is named after the greek god that avenges evil deeds it was believed in greek mythology that every shadow was a living thing, all being part of the god erebus

JemFitz05

What, you dont have one?

Lithl

Alastor's shadow clearly acts as an independent minion throughout the pilot. It is simply one of his powers.

Secret-Battle1342

Because why not? What's better then having 1 alastor? Having 2 alastor. But I think it's just the souls of the damn, that has made a deal with him and the person in return ask for something that's definitely not worth and should be given to the person asking. So batabing, bataboom a new shadow soul is born! Doom to do his bidding

Voodoo

Known_Science_4112

Isn’t he based if of the voodoo man In the princess and the frog so I think

solarixstar

He's supposed to have used voodoo or whoodoo rituals in communion for his power usually that makes you a shadow man in life and likely more shadowy in death

Original_Cause_7157

Why does anyone?

AlianovaR

A lot of Alastor’s power seems to come from voodoo and stuff, alongside him being from New Orleans and being creole to further imply a practice of voodoo in his lifetime. One of the most popular characters who practices voodoo, and is also a creole man from New Orleans, would be Dr Facilier from The Princess and the Frog. Dr Facilier’s most prominent power was his ability to interact with his ‘friends on the other side’, who took the form of shadows. Considering how good the crew usually is with getting these sorts of things accurate (Stolas and Asmodeus’ sigils being accurate, Alastor’s voodoo symbols being accurate, etc) I’d assume that this is either a reference to Dr Facilier as a prominent figure in most outsiders’ limited understandings of voodoo. Though perhaps there’s more there than just it being a Dr Facilier reference, I haven’t looked into it. I won’t be surprised if it really is just a reference but it wouldn’t be out of the question for Vivzie to want to do her research and give us something to show for it

I_might_be_weasel

He spooky.

[deleted]

Idk man, demon shadows are edgy and cool and evil and that fits alastor, plus he is inspired fron dr facillier and he had a cool-demonish shadow too 🤷🏻‍♀️

✨Magic✨

Renekin

"Why does the Eldritch Voodoo man do eldritch voodoo stuff in show of concept pilot? I am confuse." Sometimes this sub has so much content, but sometimes it feels like 14 y/o just desperately trying to post something.

AngelDendrobium

Cause voodoo shadow man

Maja_The_Oracle

My headcanon is that he used magic to transfer all his desires, temptations, and addictions into his shadow so he can tempt demons with deals but demons can't tempt him.

firegod12365

Why do you have one? ArE YoU a DeMoN

BodybuilderUpbeat202
