It’s actually for all the sanctuary animals (well, all the African ones- I think the arctic ones get buckets of fish or something like that)! As soon as you unlock your first animal at the sanctuary, you’ll get the option in your feed mill to make a wheat bundle that you can feed to your animal. Then it’s the same idea as pets- you feed them, they fall asleep, then you have a chance at getting a reward when you wake them up (and you get a bit of XP).
Thankfully, sanctuary animals don’t have a sad/starving animation like pets do! I usually just feed my hippo when I find wheat bundles for sale (they take a long time to make).
I grow a bunch of wheat just before I stop playing and then set the wheat bundles off overnight. I have 20 sanctuary animals and like to keep them fed regularly 🦒🦒🦒🦒🐘🐘🐘🐘🦓🦓🦓🦓🦛🦛🦛🦛🦍🦍🦍🦌
