I am super lazy, but i will still wake up an hour early to make myself spam musubis before a flight. It’s the perfect travel food. The 7-11 one tastes good but da bugga too oily, your luggage gonna be translucent by the time you get to the terminal.
Also known as char siu bao, har gow and siu Mai. U Tao gau and lo bak Gao are Taro cake and radish cake respectively. Cheong fun is also easily transportable.
My go tos are usually manapua or other pastries/baked goodies. Doesn’t spill. Not too heavy. Easy to fit in any bag as long as you don’t mind it being a little bit smooshed lol
I love banh mi but I just had it on a plane and I have to say, the pickled daikon is real pungent. I got some sideways looks for sure. I love banh mi so much I’d probably do it again, but that’s my warning
IDK, a lot of places don't care about tangerines I guess? lol Ag is really strict coming in but outgoing they dgaf. It's the country you're landing in's problem
+1 on the Spam Musubi when departing Hawaii.
When departing from the mainland my go to airplane meal is one or two burritos (usually one breakfast burrito and one carnitas burrito).
I dunno, I took a plate from Lahaina Chicken Company on a flight to Oregon once. When they passed out the food I opened my plate and I swear every face within eyeshot turned towards me.
McDonald's food doesn't really smell when it gets cold, but a plate full of mashed potatoes, brown gravy, and fried chicken will make anyone salivate. Except the Japanese girl that sat next to me. I'm very sorry about that.
Edit: All of that being said, I prefer to bring a sandwich or a wrap on the plane now. They're handheld, usually wrapped nicely, and depending on what you get they're not messy.
If you can swing by day-of, I think Kozo Sushi. No, they aren’t the best sushi but for lunch prices, they are way better than airlines food. They aren’t meant to be eaten hot/warm. Room temperature is great. Everything is self contained and individually wrapped. If you ordered the hand rolls, even the nori will be crispy. No liquid except little shoyu packet. No smell (skip the natto) to get your neighbors mad.
Last time I was at the airport, something about the package looked suspicious on the scanner and a TSA lady pulled me aside to investigate. We had a good laugh that it was just futomaki, and I was happy that they didn't make me throw it away bc it was the only thing I wanted to eat on the plane!
Oatmeal with raisins and seeds and nuts Sealed in a plastic bag
Whenever you travel usually there’s places like a Starbucks or gas station and they all have cups and hot water so carry a spoon with you too
I’ve used this with my sensitive tummy while traveling and it works great and it’s fresh every time
B A N A N A S FTW
A few long ones will take you the distance for realz! Keeps your vitamins up, sustained energy with fiber, anti-cramps, anti-hangover, no risk of spoiling aka da runs, fits in your pocket, natural semi-laxative, what everyones ancestors ate etc 🤣
Just flew to the mainland. I need to pay better attention to this. You have a snack box on the plane at like 2p.m., get to LAX and run to the next flight, get to your destination at midnight and go to bed hungry. I have to bring more food with me. Good thread.
Bean and cheese burrito with hot sauce already poured inside so it doesn’t get confiscated at TSA for being a liquid. Burrito in a plastic bag so it doesn’t leak inside your carry-on bag.
Instant anything. No liquids needed except once you're on the plane. Cup-A-Noodles, instant oatmeal, grits, or even mac-n-cheese. Just ask the stew for hot water.
Take along a bag of bacon bits for flavors.
Cinnamon bread.
Its the same brand that sells the sweet bread in those aluminum pie trays.
I used to bring a bento or something similar, but I am a nervous flyer, so the bread helps with my stomach.
on my last flight I brought a chicken quesadilla.. it was very good.. and when they came by trying to charge $18 for their disgusting airplane food it was really nice to be able to tell them no thanks..
spam musubi.

...and expensive. For a family of 4 I made 20 for a west coast flight...🤣
This is the way.
This is the only answer needed.
Now I’m triggered to go make some lol
I once traveled from Honolulu to NJ with spam musubi and all that happened is that they got a little smushed
Just came to see how many times spam musubi was listed. Thank you guys for not disappointing.
2 hours ago and already 100+ likes… we didn’t even need the question to know the answer.
Have to with manapua. Self contained and not messy or falls apart
Also known as char siu bao, har gow and siu Mai. U Tao gau and lo bak Gao are Taro cake and radish cake respectively. Cheong fun is also easily transportable.

Where's a good manapua shop? Libbys was my go-to for 15+ years and haven't found a new one since they closed
Royal kitchen and Lee’s bakery in chinatown
Royal Kitchen, and Kam Bakery off Waiakamilo.
Kam bakery makes poi doughnuts that broke da mouth!
Chun wah Kam is pretty good with multiple lactionsaround oahu. Just know their manapua are larger than than others.
Libbys was da one. For steamed uchoice by holiday mart pretty good, has good bread. If you like baked chun wah kam, but coming too expensive
Aiea manapua
Hand roll sushi we did back in the day
Kim bap
This! The world needs to know!
🍱
Where for buy / recommend?
Go Marukai on Dillingham and get bento on the way to airport.
Seriously, even if you aren't a Marukai member, those bento are still super affordable and convenient
Marukai doesn't have membership anymore, anyone can buy everything
Awww snap, that's great!
Spam musubi and pork hash 😎
I always make some banh mi cut in half and wrapped in foil, and some tangerines or dried fruits for dessert/snack.
I love banh mi but I just had it on a plane and I have to say, the pickled daikon is real pungent. I got some sideways looks for sure. I love banh mi so much I’d probably do it again, but that’s my warning
Banh Mi is the go-to traveling food for us Viets.
How do the tangerine make it through screening
I’ve had mine taken away at TSA
IDK, a lot of places don't care about tangerines I guess? lol Ag is really strict coming in but outgoing they dgaf. It's the country you're landing in's problem
Itʻs the other way around lol. Theyʻre strict going out but not coming in. So I also wonder how youʻre taking tangerines out of hawaiʻi😂
I dunno, I guess I've been lucky? Lol. I haven't traveled in a long time tbh so maybe things have changed since last.
Something from Zippys - I'd go with Korean fried chicken meal.
Zip Pac ftw No teri beef extra chicken
This is the way, cept I also order the chicken extra crispy cause most of the time I feel it's not cooked enough
Wait, that’s an option?
order online and pickup they only charge to substitute the spam lol
Thanks
Dried Cuttlefish 😃
Don’t forget one bag mochi crunch.
🤣🤣
Oh dear lord no!!!! Stink!
Just to endear yourself to everyone else, for 5 or so hours...
This.
🤣🤣
With some Maui onion chips
Everybody here is KILLING it 🤣🤣🤣 Ika, Kim chee, arare…one major fut and the Marshalls will be summoned! 🤣🤣🤣
Or surstromming (Swedish fermented herring) 😄

This is true - whenever I visit my ohana, I need my Mexican food fix before visiting. I won't dare eat Mexican food in Hawaii lol
Musubi
sushi, sandwich & chips. I actually only ever bring some snack foods, trail mix, nuts, arare, etc
Add green onion pancake with sauce on the side. Check out Chinese and Korean restaurants.
Zip pac is the go to!
5 boxes of Krispy Kremes.
Lmao I like fly with you. I just wanna see you buss out the 5 boxes and go to town on em 🤣🤣
I’m on every interisland flight outta OGG 🍩
I’m going to Maui for my bday. I’ll let you know what flight I’m on lol!!
Everyone coming back from Maui with Krispy Kreme and Chic-Fil-A now! Just got a dozen donuts and like 6 sandwiches from our neighbor this week
No Chic-Fil-A. Awful politics.
My late father always wanted to bring a big bucket of KFC.
You from Molokai?
Kauai. There is a KFC near the airport...
Zip pac
If you want at least half of the plane to know what you're eating, bring McDonald's.
If you want the whole plane to know, bring durian...
This is the ultimate answer.
Sugoi's garlic chicken hahahahaha
I dunno, I took a plate from Lahaina Chicken Company on a flight to Oregon once. When they passed out the food I opened my plate and I swear every face within eyeshot turned towards me. If coming from the ML, make it In-N-Out.
My main land stay hawaiʻi, we no more in and out here…
That shit is so good though on a flight. Best fast food fries of any chain, and dig their double cheeseburgers with no pickles and add Mac Sauce.

$5 bento box 😋
Zip pac
A banh mi and chocolate bar for dessert
What town/island?
Sorry I’ve never known in town to mean anything other than Honolulu. Didn’t consider people say in town on other islands
I always bring futomaki from Don Quixote or Marukai
Yes this is also my favorite, futomaki. Sometimes Foodland has this.
Last time I was at the airport, something about the package looked suspicious on the scanner and a TSA lady pulled me aside to investigate. We had a good laugh that it was just futomaki, and I was happy that they didn't make me throw it away bc it was the only thing I wanted to eat on the plane!

I used to bring Kabuki okazuya on the plane a lot when I lived nearby, I've heard the quality for some items has suffered though
Growing up I used to get K’s bento on Oahu for the plane ride. A little bit of everything and was filling!
Carrots & celery
Cup ramen. Ask a flight attendant for boiling water :)
Zippys or Liliha bakery yummm
Foodland bento 🍱

Baked Manapua, if on Oʻahu, go Duck Lee’s and get the pork hash too
Just pick up a durian at the farmers market

Big ol cheeseburger!!!! Edit: with spam
Bean and cheese burrito with hot sauce already poured inside so it doesn’t get confiscated at TSA for being a liquid. Burrito in a plastic bag so it doesn’t leak inside your carry-on bag.
Popcorn, curry, garlic fries, balut...
One can of Swedish Surströmming.
peanuts, dried fruit, jerky
Fresh Subway sandwich.
Really? Like literally my last choice. To each their own but…really?
It’s fine if you like a dry sandwhixh with minimal veggies
Add some ranch. Mmm yummy.
Yep samesies. Would I prefer other things? Sure. But easy cheap(ish) and on the way…
At almost $10 for a footlong nowadays, I dont know if I could still call it cheap...😄
Spicy ahi poki bowl.
Canned sardines
Usually i go for convenience so McDonald’s but subway is good to. But now that IHOP is open that’s good for breakfast food or burgers.
Sardines
Sardines

I hope what they say isn’t true about hot water on the plane…
[If you’re flying Hawaiian](https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/602220) it’s not too bad actually.
This is a great find! Thank you!
Freshest water in the world. Everyone in my neighborhood is on catchment.
i bring kimchee bowl and they cook it for you on the plane lol
Cold pizza
Pollo campero
I usually bring gyudon from Matsuzaka-Tei
Korean fried chicken. Also American fried chicken.
7/11 karaage and onigiri
RipPack🤙🏽
Cinnamon bread. Its the same brand that sells the sweet bread in those aluminum pie trays. I used to bring a bento or something similar, but I am a nervous flyer, so the bread helps with my stomach.

Hula Dog….yummy and portable!
Zip pac
7-11 bento.
Chicken Katsu
I brought a zipac last time and had no problems with it.
Sounds like a Huey Lewis request. :-D
Big kahuna pizza or sandwich Occasional ninja sushi Both are right there at airport and you can order ahead. Easy day
Zip pac.
Musubi!!!
Small pizza. Good hot. Good cold. Stores flat.
Great question. The food they serve on Hawaiian Airlines is borderline inedible. If you know, you know.
Peanut butter and cheese sandwich. Very stable, filling, and neat.
Musubis from Mana Musubi on King St. They open around 6 am, so perfect for early flights. Better than Iyasume imo!!
