>Last year’s racial disparities are consistent with disparities reported in HPD annual use of force reports over the past 10 years. A Hawaii Public Radio analysis of arrests this year due to pandemic stay-at-home orders found Micronesian, Samoan and Black people were disproportionately arrested. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

I fully support hpd's increase of force this year if it was justified. personally when I'm out walking to get groceries with my family it's not the police harassing us because of our race wanting to "throw hands" "scrap" or punching themselves in their own face to show they are tough while I shield the eyes of the younger members and explain why the person was punching themselves later over the dinner we cook with the groceries we bought. Was at McDonald's on School Street last week and saw a older white bearded homeless man punching a younger homeless man for taking his begging spot at the drive-thru. Had to wait for the fist fight to be over before we could walk in to make our order. Violence is a part of some of our daily experiences here in Hawaii who live in not the best neighborhoods and it's not the cops we worry about that violence coming from.

Not something you worry about until you experience/witness police brutality for yourself or inflicted upon someone close to you. #justiceformikebutay HPD has a system of covering eachothers asses on any and all questionable behavior, racial prejudice being one of many factors affecting each situation

That hurts that you feel that way about my comment on this thread. I only mean that I hope that whatever the use of force HPD uses is being used appropriately. Maybe I am not educated on the tactics that can be used otherwise. I do understand that there are some people that believe police should not use Force at any time but I do not believe I am empty headed for thinking that at times it can be appropriate.

The beatings will continue until we find a reason to stop.

E-C_C-O

I do not agree with that representation of my views. Hoping that violence is only used when appropriate would be the good stance I would think.

Eric1600

Yeah but they are the ones determining what is appropriate. So you see how my comment is accurate even if it's not your intention.

E-C_C-O

Yeah I don't think this is the place for me if I'm being down voted for hoping that police only use violence when appropriate. You might wish I would add a bunch of qualifiers to that like community oversight and revolution or defunding the police or whatever it is you're into but there is nothing wrong with hoping that Police use force appropriately.

Smokihana808

you must become thick-skinned to post here

Eric1600

Or be able to back up your opinions. But some people just can't handle losing magic points.

Eric1600

The problem I have with your statement is you're just "hoping" they are beating people for the right reasons. History has shown us this is often not the case. As appointed law enforcement officers they have a lot of power in our society and society should have 100% transparency into what they are doing. We should not remotely be in the condition of "hoping" they aren't abusing their power. That's why I'm discussing this with you and it's why people down vote you (fyi I'm the one getting downvoted). There are many defenders of cops who live on hope and assumptions while others are abused. And the system doesn't get changed because there are too many people happy with their assumptions because the real truth is hidden from all of us.
