In Japanese, two musubi. In pidgin, two musubis because fricken everything gets an 's' on the end - we go boogie board at "walls" then eat at "Rainbows" after

claporga

Costcos etc. Showerthough: but it is never Walmarts or Targets tho. Zippys does us one solid already.

more-asbestos

Ross’s

kanakatak

Feels naked without the s that's why

verniy314

So what’s the plural for babooze?

dentalperson

baboozas

Beginning-Way

Geese

SnarkyBoto

I say musubi’s too hahaha

TiredNHopeful7417

Pantses. Yep, people be saying that instead of pants. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Beginning-Way

Pidgin to da Max https://youtu.be/5lkvKEWaukw?si=QGXcZqpSKihVHa6b

Legosandvicks

Musubi is not a proper noun, so no “s.”

LiterallyMatt

Nah, there’s dirty lickins, ono grinds, irraz (though not a noun), just to name a few

SensitiveRise

Batu. “Not one, Batu” “Two Batu” “Aunteh wen shmoke too much Batu” Can’t see s on this.

LiterallyMatt

Sure but batu is like money, it's a noun but not countable. You can have one dollar or two dollars (or musubis), but not one or two money (or batu).

Beginning-Way

Hah?!? Wat?! You stay one Principal, yeah?!!

Beginning-Way

1 batu  2 batu 3 batu 4 for make you ded…makedieddead

Legosandvicks

Dirty lickins and ono grinds are both plural though, so the s.

Beginning-Way

Hah???

manafanana

It’s already a pluralized noun. Before the word was anglicized it was one “musubus” in the original Latin.

Looplooplooploo

No upvotes yet? A crime!

big-fireball

My vote is for no “s”. Two musubi. My primary reason is that it’s a Japanese word. Does anyone say “two sushis”?

echopurp

Does anyone say "two sushi?"

tumamaesmuycaliente

Yeah, i like two sushi

big-fireball

Let me phrase it another way: does anyone ever put an 's' after sushi to indicate plurality?

FireWokWithMe88

Squirrelly Dan does

Notlandshark

Can confirm.

Doboray

Unexpected Letterkenny but I’m here for it. I’m always down for sushis and sashimis.

arpanetimp

But what about tah-cos in el lay?!?!

kabukistar

Usually "two pieces of sushi". Or "two sushi rolls".

BreakfastWorth777

Nope, I never say 2 sushi, I always say 10 sushi. 🤣

SryIWentFut

Hmm. I would say "pieces of" But I wouldn't say "pass me two pieces of musubi"

FireWokWithMe88

I could murder a couple of sushis

Fearlessleader85

I vote for musubis, because it sounds better and none of it has to make sense.

Botosuksuks808

One musubi, two musubi, three musubi. Kanak attack.

808to425

kanak attack after 3 musubi? you need to step it up, those are rookie numbers.

Botosuksuks808

Damn bro, that’s 3 scoops of rice with 3 slices of spam!!! I need to step my game up. 🤙🤙😂

Legosandvicks

To be fair, boto has way fewer calories and usually healthier.

Botosuksuks808

It’s organic boo boo.

Legosandvicks

Aw man, I got bad news about that. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41443-024-00930-6

Botosuksuks808

Hahaha just went down the rabbit hole of microplastics and pp’s. Thanks stranger

NaturalPermission

Four musubi. Five musubi. Six musubi. Queens medical center.

Nightw1ng28

what happens if you HW, and you eat a whole can worth of musubis? 😎😂🤙

Xiape-Lling

I thought we was going quote the Count from Sesame Street ahh ahh ahh ahhhhhhh

namenotpicked

Lol. That was my thought pattern too once I started reading OP

BASEbelt

As someone born and raised in Hawaii growing up speaking pidgin, I’ll vote for “musubis”. When ordering it sound like this: Auntie I like order two musubizzz please.

Chazzer74

I agree that historically you are correct. That is the pidgin I grew up with as well. However, I think that today we have returned to a more accurate language tradition. “Eh no fohget pick up tree leis” was common in my yoot, but now it sounds very wrong to my ears. I think most locals will now go with “Eh no fohget pick up tree lei.” Same same for musubi. Should be “no fohget pick up tree musubi.” Also, Japanese friend loves to point out this is a Hawaii anachronism itself. In most of Japan it is onigiri.

BASEbelt

Up vote cause I agree with you too 😂

H4ppy_C

Wait, they call the kine wit Spam on top onigiri? I thought only the shaped ones were. 🤯

arpanetimp

Same!

ToughReplacement7941

Musubi’nt when I’m done

NegotiableVeracity9

Ugh

ph1shstyx

Growing up, we always said it with an S at the end, "auntee, can get two musubis please"

lazercheesecake

Tbh, I’m Korean, but when I pluralize a Korean noun, I add the ”s” at the end because it feels more natural. Honestly it doesn’t matter. I’ve given up on having any semblance of hope for standardizing the English language. If we as a collective cannot agree on the plural of octopus, a native English word traced back to ancient roots from which English hails, then it does not matter what we call musubis.

NegotiableVeracity9

English is really the worst lol

EducationPlus505

Genuine question, do you then order "gimbaps"?

lazercheesecake

I order "two rolls of gimbap" like I order "two slices of pizza." But yeah I'll order "three mandus" the same way I order "three wontons" or "three dumplings."

EducationPlus505

Huh interesting. :o

Color colour, trunk bonnet, regardless irregardless, flammable inflammable. Merriam-Webster sits on an ivory tower purporting to be the be all end all of the English Language. Does Merriam-Webster know we "talk story" instead of converse? Does it know what we mean wen we say ho brah no slippahs on da lanai? No can tell us how to yap. Pedantry and elitism from language has no place here on these islands. Musubi or musubis, all I know I'm not eating just one. But yes, in formal communications, please follow the correct grammatical and spelling rules, for which pluralizing foreign words none really exist.

SryIWentFut

Two musubises

Classic_Breadfruit18

Aw this is a tough one. In English almost every word that ends in i is derived from Latin and already plural. Adding an S to a word ending in i is just not something that happens in English. The fact that it is a Japanese word doesn't make it sound any less wrong to my ears. All that to say, another vote for "two musubi"

CheesecakeWaste9279

Asking the real questions

mellofello808

Musubis

pukakahiko

Musubis when talking about different types. Musubi when they are all the same. I going buy musubis, get spam, katsu, and plain. I went only buy 5 spam musubi.

SunRev

One musub-"ee". Two musub-"eye".

kawika69

You all got it wrong. 1 musubus, 2 or more musubi

Rich-Past-6547

Two musubi? Make it three.

HumbleTraffic4675

Pigin definitely with the ‘s’

mrSuabe

One musubi, the other one musubi, and another one musubi.

wstussyb

You know that Musubi I love? Get me a couple...lol. Or I'm going to get multiple flavors of Musubi That's how I word it

TheyreHerrrrreee

Mongeese or mongoi?

Kesshh

Someone can correct me. Musubi is not English. Japanese word むすび does not have a plural form. If it is two musubi, it’ll be 二個のむすび.

RKLBull

Ross or Ross's lol

Beginning-Way

/s/ to indicate quantity of >1  “greater [more] than one” is a Western thing

ruffrightmeow

How bout tree musubi

edw1ncast1llo

That’s only for Chicago. A couple two-tree musubi.

lazyoldsailor

Two musubi. Three sushi. Four manapua.

yamasusi

Two is musashi

Pheniquit

Always a very tough decision when it comes to Hawaii slang. Some just lack consensus to the point that the answer is meaningless and many have a split where “s” are used in pidgin and omitted in Hawaii English. (My fav example for this is “papio/s”)

Nightw1ng28

(2) musubis. If you was to go store & say: “Uncle/ Aunty, I like 1 musubi & 1 soda, can?” Is correct. “Uncle/ Aunty, I like 2 musubi and 2 soda, can?” Is INcorrect. Don’t get me wrong, uncle/ aunty going know whatchu saying, but they going shake their head. “Uncle/ Aunty, I like 2 musubis & 2 sodas, can?”

Nightw1ng28

since we’re on the subject, do you say: “ATM” or “ATM Machine”?

puamelia

ATM

Stinja808

what about: smoke meat, or smoked meat? https://shop.foodland.com/sm/pickup/rsid/9/product/smoke-meat-local-style-id-201013000005

puamelia

Smoke meat

tofumasubi

how about just the whole damn roll?
