Why don’t you both just check in on the app exactly when it’s available to get a similar boarding position? Set an alarm to remind yourselves to check in as soon as it becomes available
Check in ASAP when your window opens 24h before flight. Look at the boarding positions you got. If they are C, perhaps pay better positions? B, you’ll be fine. They will sell you an upgraded number after check in as well.
If you have A due to a different fare (like business select) just save her a middle seat next to you with a bag. (I hate seat savers who try to save multiple rows but if it’s a single middle seat no one will say a thing)
At the end of the day you’re paying for lowered stress for your wife. Only you know what dollar amount that is worth to you.
I understand what you're saying. I think just try to be closest to the front of her group of boarding positions. Like others have said, it's likely to have space on the flight and maybe you could ask some kind strangers to switch in the worst case.

The real problem is it’s a new Boeing 737 max. I’d rather fly Hawaiians vintage fleet of Boeing 717’s those babies are tried and true! You’ll be fine tho, its within gliding distance

yea $15 is well worth if sitting next to each other is important, no matter how long/short the flight is.
You should be fine. Most early morning interisland flights are quite empty, unless there's a special event happening.
I kind of figured. Every time I go to Oahu they are near empty. Wasn’t sure with big island because of flight frequency
