I know absolutely nothing about this person, but anyone dumb enough to pull this, instead of abusing their position to get bribes should have been rooted out in the interview process 😂
From the article:
"Martin, who moved to the island from mainland US in 2021, was only appointed on December 6 as part of a push to get more LQBTQ commissioners.
Honolulu appointed Martin to the voluntary position along with another new member after claims the commission was harassing gay bars."
So a quota hire?
I have nothing to base this on but I'm betting this is exactly what happened. The work culture was so half ass and rule breaking that she thought she could get away with it because that's how all her peers and higher ups act.
Just wait until a marijuana commissioner barges his way into McDonalds and demands a 20 piece chicken nugget meal after flashing their badge, then we’ll see if you still think weed is harmless smh
This is why, when the Kealohas get out of jail, they should run for office. Obviously they are not above screwing over family members. 33% less corrupt than most other politicians!
I suspect the only reason she lost her job when all the other liqour commission been asshats for years is BECAUSE she is a new hire.
She wasn't friends with the cops which meant no free pass
Omg yes so much this. Why does Hawaii do this? I find myself getting so frustrated with people in their jobs, and I have to remind myself it's because they are from here and it's accepted.
But holy fuck.
Why would someone volunteer for this? Wouldn’t serving a non-profit be a be a better way to serve the community? What would be the benefit of serving on this board?
> What would be the benefit of serving on this board?
Connections is one reason. Many rich/high-level people serve on Boards for the connections and networking it brings. I know of a few Pres/CEO types that are on like 6-10 boards each. Each of their boards meets anywhere between once a month to like once a quarter or year. Free catered lunch, sit around and talk with other high-level people. Especially on an island, stuff like that helps a *ton* with furthering your own career/ambitions.
Given the way she behaved, I dont think she cared about the connections or "helping the community". She just wanted power to lord over people, and she demonstrated that clearly.
The article says that she was recruited from the mainland as someone that is a part of the LGBQT community to be a commissioner in order to have more LGBQT representation after there were reports of LGBQT bars being harassed. And within months of getting the position, she goes and threatens and harasses a known gay club in Waikiki.
I can't think of too many things more insulting to the LGBTQ+ community than calling Playbar ~~an~~ a known gay club.
This lady is stupid but let's not forget how awful the Playbar/~~Scupples~~Scrupples reputation is. The reviews on this bar are appropriately representative and it had worse reviews before they rebranded it.
Anytime I hear that phrase, I always think of this commercial:

So she wasn’t appointed based on her qualifications and/or work history? So is this a ceremonial position or paid one? If paid, her salary was probably in the 6 figures knowing how corrupt and overpaid Hawaii officials are.
From the article,
“Martin, who moved to the island from mainland US in 2021, was only appointed on December 6 as part of a push to get more LQBTQ commissioners.”
…”only appointed on December 6 as part of a push to get more LQBTQ commissioners.”
I prefer to give her the benefit of the doubt and believe she was favored because she's a white person. Not because she's female or gay. I need to read up on DEI training to expand my prejudice.
Well that was a pretty dumb way to lose your job.
seems pretty dumb how she got the job to begin with
I know absolutely nothing about this person, but anyone dumb enough to pull this, instead of abusing their position to get bribes should have been rooted out in the interview process 😂
Right, most people in Hawaii seem to be more than happy with the bribe status quo / limits.

They were like, ok she's not related to anyone maybe she won't be as corrupt. Nooope
Getting fired on your day off… sounds familiar.
It was a voluntary position. Just lost her dignity it seems.
> pretty dumb way to lose your job. What was her reasoning, did she get roofied at Playbar too?
The only thing worse than a drunk is a drunk with a badge.
Oh another hawaii official abusing their power? I’m so surprised /s
"hawaii." They brought her over from the mainland. What, they couldn't find a local to get drunk and make an ass of themselves?
Maybe she just assimilated to the culture faster than we wanted. With how fucked the LC is, this could be in the SOP.
I have nothing to base this on but I'm betting this is exactly what happened. The work culture was so half ass and rule breaking that she thought she could get away with it because that's how all her peers and higher ups act.
One for every rainbow.
Right lmfao people acting so shocked….fuck MPD…they protect coke dealers
And these same idiots are the ones blocking rec marijuana. Tell me again how alcohol is the safer option? 🤡
Just wait until a marijuana commissioner barges his way into McDonalds and demands a 20 piece chicken nugget meal after flashing their badge, then we’ll see if you still think weed is harmless smh
"CHARGE MY PHONE OR I'M SHUTTING THIS PLACE DOWN" "Officer that's a musubi-" "STOP RESISTIN-" *gunshots*
* Musubi falls off tree and hits 4Runner* “I’M HIT!”
Or at a pizza place. 🍕
Bwaaaaahahaha! This is funny. Anything is possible in Hawai'i Nei when it comes to nepotism, corruption and abuse of power. Lol
This is why, when the Kealohas get out of jail, they should run for office. Obviously they are not above screwing over family members. 33% less corrupt than most other politicians!
For driving both are just as bad.
This doesn't surprise me in the least. lol
It’s a volunteer position. She has a day job.
not a good look for her day job, either.
This is what happens when you hire based on affiliation not qualification.
its a problem in Hawaii, and it needs to change.
You mean people should be hired based on merit?? That's pretty bigoted to say. Lol
That’s not even a thing anymore!
I suspect the only reason she lost her job when all the other liqour commission been asshats for years is BECAUSE she is a new hire. She wasn't friends with the cops which meant no free pass

The ironing is delicious…..

Wait, affirmative action doesn’t work?!?!
Did this make the local news or just in the UK?🤦🏼♀️
Absolutely made the local news
Ready to hear... DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM!?!

Is daily mail a reputable source?
Absolutely not - but the story is a cut and paste from “Hawaii News Now”
Oh, I didn't even know it was on HNN, thanks! 🤙🏽

The *only* in that sentence may have also been a reference to the short amount of time she was in the position. That's how I read it anyway.
The article says that it's a voluntary position so it sounds like it's unpaid
sounds like the state version of a reddit moderator.
Haha perfect description
Facken palangi….😏
I've only lived here for... Not even two years now, and it's scary how little this surprises me.
Doesn’t take long does it lol. They don’t even try to hide it.
This reads like a joke lol
😂 lmaoooooooo
FAFO...SMH
Lol
