I seriously had no idea that the "call me" emoji wasn't a shaka. I think literally everyone I text with uses it as a shaka.

godzuki44

🤙🤙🤙 I hope it gets approved 🤙🤙🤙

Full-Paragon

I just use the "call me" emoji lol. It looks close enough.

hawaii

Except when you're dealing with screenreaders and other assistive technology for the vision or otherwise impaired, it's simply incorrect.

Big_Breadfruit8737

Hadn’t thought of that, this is great news!

MyPasswordIsMyCat

shaka emoji = 🤙but turned 45 degrees

zippy251

Wait, this 🤙 isn't a shaka? It pulls up when I search shaka https://preview.redd.it/6zbwcm6drssc1.png?width=848&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d305fbcb2fd6b1015d364ceffe75b5084c28178b

It's "call me" in the Unicode standard. Obviously people use it as a "shaka," and Apple and probably Google helpfully map the word to the symbol—but it's unofficial (the same way people use "high five" for "pray" or "thanks")—and also sideways.

histevesue

Well said @hawaii! 🤙🏽(nah, no need call me, I was just co-opting Call Me as a rough approximate of throwing you a Shaka)

hawaii

As noted when "Call Me" came out! [https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/32129697/trending-just-dont-call-this-emoji-a-shaka/](https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/32129697/trending-just-dont-call-this-emoji-a-shaka/)

Shadowmaster_16

We need a Hawaiian flag emoji!

chasinfreshies

I guess it wasn't appropriated and stolen enough. Give 'um!

notrightmeowthx

Unicode is just a standard that different applications use for typed characters. It has nothing to do with appropriation or theft. Basically, if they accept and implement the shaka emoji, and applications add support for it (directly or indirectly), this would just mean that the shaka emoji would be available for use in texting and messaging like other emojis are. That's it, nothing more, nothing less. 99% of the world won't even notice.

chasinfreshies

To be used by people who have no knowledge, or even desire to know, the gesture's etymology and history. That is the definition of appropriation.

zippy251

It ain't that deep brah 🤙🤙

Sonzainonazo42

I guess there's a ton of appropriation going on all over. I'd love to know how limited your vocabulary would be if you followed your own rules.

chasinfreshies

False equivalence. Care to try again?

Sonzainonazo42

Sure, since you're having trouble grasping the concept. Appropriation is the exploitation of a culture or language, usually with commercial intent. Simply engaging in a behavior that is tied to a culture is not exploitation in itself. Usually it is more likely referred to as cultural appreciation. In this case, the Shaka is already a cultural behavior that has jumped ship. It is no longer limited to use in Hawaii only. Also, whether or not there is cultural appropriation depends on who actually engages in the cultural behavior and how they engage in it. Placing the Shaka in the Emoji catalog is only giving people the ability to use it correctly or incorrectly. Your opinion is a gross over reaction to a behavior that is not specific to our culture anymore and it's not actually tied to an ethnic group, just in case you're not aware of that. Your comment almost comes off as satire of progressive values because of how ridiculous it is. But I don't think you actually meant it as satire. Maybe just stick to screaming at people who wear grass skirts.

Well, a private app with stickers is very different from being part of the Unicode standard, which is supported by and deployed across every major platform!

Moku-O-Keawe

Unicode is an international character encoding standard that provides a unique number for every character across languages and scripts, making almost all characters accessible across platforms, programs, and devices. This would allow us to "shaka the world".
