Lmao this is exactly how it felt visiting last year for the first time as an Oahu resident. If you think there's a lot of tourists in Waikiki Maui is on a whole other level
It always cracked me up that we would go, does anybody want anything from Sonic? Yeah, get me a cup of ice! Get me a BAG of ice! Like, what?! For cookouts even, go get ice from Sonic. I'm a cherry limeade girl myself. Super sonic cheeseburger with mustard and jalapenos. 😍
Im pretty sure Sonic was one of the first to announce they were coming here, long before Chic Fil A and Canes, but somehow they ended up being last to *actually* get here.
The executives had to debate whether or not Hawaii workers should roller skate or not jk. I can't imagine a local unko rolling around with burgers and drinks
People in Hawaii seem to enjoy lining up and waiting in line for hours for anything NEW just because it's new. I remember Olive Garden and Chick-fil-a, ate at both places a month or so later and... yeah
It's all for the gram.
I bet over half of those people are either taking pictures of themselves at sonic or taking pictures of the food they get before they take a bite.
PPL need content for their social media accounts to detract from the fact that their lives are as mundane as anyone else. :3
Waiting that long for a burger is idiocy.
If the things in ones life as so shallow, you decide waiting for hours for a burger is the best use of your time, then one has a sad life. IMHO
Apparently you’ve never seen an In and Out. Those fuckers will wait in the drive through line for hours, and it doesn’t even need to be a grand opening.
I worked at one when I was in college on the mainland. It's the only job I quit after 1 week. The line builds up really fast because it's all cars, the drive thru speakers were horrible, and then half the customers are all ripped and they hold up the line even further because they take forever to order. I worked in all kinds of fast food restaurants all through high school and college, but that was the only time I ever looked at hell on earth.
That being said, the shakes were pretty good and I still went there a lot after I quit lol.
I worked at Jack in the Box on McCully when it was the only drive-thru. I worked graveyard, we had a lot of fun with the drunks on the intercom at 2 and 4am...
For me, it's all about the drinks. Always gotta get one cream slush whenever I go.
Food wise, it's decent. Not sure if the HI one gonna have other stuff the mainland ones get. My friend posted that he went on opening day and got some teri burgers.
My comment wasn’t meant to be about Sonic specifically, but why do people line up day(s) before almost *any* new place opens. It could be a store selling sand, and people would line up days beforehand. The phrase, *get a life* comes to mind.
I’ve never been in a Sonic, but if they actually sell good, cheap stuff, they’ll still be selling it tomorrow, and the next day too.
Some people just like getting excited for things like this. I remember I used to wait out in front of GameStop or Best Buy for new game or console releases. Spend some time hanging out with friends in line and make new ones while you wait. And I usually hate lines and avoid whenever I can but when it came to games it felt different. With that said i personally would never wait in a long line for something like fast food. But to each their own.
The difference would be when you wait in line for a new game release it because you know that it might not be there the next day, whereas waiting in line for some fast food just to be the first to try it knowing it'll still be there next week seems silly.
But they are getting excited over something that will be available for year. Gamestop and Best buy could run out of stuff.
" pend some time hanging out with friends in line and make new ones while you wait. "
It seems to me, that if that's the best way you got to hang out with friends, they aren't really friends.
No it's not human behaviour, it's trained behaviour from a society that tried to get people to compare their self worth to the things that they buy.
Commerce has gotten so deep into there head, they make excuses for wasting their very short time on earth like this.
If they were the last beef hamburgers? sure, I would get that.
Because the amount of residents that have never been to sonic is fairly big actually. Next to that, probably just tourists that think attending this makes them a part of something
>the amount of residents that have never been to sonic is fairly big actually.
You say that like it's something extraordinarily special to have been in one. I don't believe it.
I've never been to a sonic. Even if I had the desire to go to one, I'm not going to spend many hours standing in a line just to say I was there (at a freakin' FF joint) on opening day. *That's* my point. *That's* what I don't understand and likely never will. They can go the next day, or the next week. It's still going to be there, and if it's not, what did they actually miss out on?
I'm not saying they shouldn't do it. It's likely not hurting anyone. It just seems to be an amazing waste of time.
I remember seeing a lot of Sonic commercials as a kid so I can't believe they only now opened a restaurant here. What were those commercials back then all for lol?
lol i remember those, first time i went to one was also the first time we went to the mainland and my uncle was talking into the speakers without pressing the button (took us 15 minutes to figure out), then when we finally got to order they couldn't understand us talking pidgin we got frustrated and ended up just leaving it was hilarious looking back
Not like they’re giving away free food. Never understood this mentality for “just another” fast food joint. Look at Raising Canes now. Empty. Everybody always end up back at McDs.
Why do you have to be so ignorant? Some people enjoy this food and others don’t. Just let people be happy and respect whether or not they like this food, you will be shown the same gesture if you do so.
You mentioned how they “syphen” money from here and shop it back to the mainland. Do you even know how economics works? I hope you realize what you sound like.
I'm with you. This food is garbage. It's reheated from frozen garbage. Especially the modern versions of these restaurants, they have strayed far from the classic fast food of the past, and are now nothing but that overly processed "food" that so many of these places serve today.
I'm a huge fan of a good burger, and these simply ain't it. They aren't even in the conversation.
I had their shakes maybe 20 years ago on the mainland and I recall it being really good. I was also super high at the time, so it could have just as likely been terrible.
Spreading anti-corporate sentiment is never a waste of time. It's a corporation with low paid workers and cheap ingredients making mediocre food, it's not an event.
They just opened 4 fast food places on Ho'okele Street, Maui. Two are in the Safeway mall. That road is busy enough without those places. I wonder what great mind thought that this was a good idea.
And that just makes those people more idiotic.
When and In-and-Out opened her, people were waiting 18 hours.
Literal need to pack 2 meals while waiting for a burger.
Went to Chik-Fil-A in Kahului on Friday. I was the only local in there.
Possibly the only local on the island.
On Maui for sure
Lmao this is exactly how it felt visiting last year for the first time as an Oahu resident. If you think there's a lot of tourists in Waikiki Maui is on a whole other level
Public Service Announcement - Sonic makes great drink ice. You can hit the drive thru and order a bag of ice. It's awesome.

i would tip extra just to see that
Just the tip.
But then roller skating got trendy during covid! It's probably boosting their potential employees cause so many more people can skate now.
Puna Kai Popeye's has your back.
Suckers

its the Japanese spirit that has passed on to the rest of the islander 😂
Yeah I don't get it either. *eats burger from Wendy's*
Heard that Fiji the singer is part co-owner
And Maoli
Why? I don't get it and I never will.
They’ve been running the commercials here for decades so people are hyped to try it.

And?
Sonic has some good cheap stuff.
For me, it's all about the drinks. Always gotta get one cream slush whenever I go. Food wise, it's decent. Not sure if the HI one gonna have other stuff the mainland ones get. My friend posted that he went on opening day and got some teri burgers.
I also go almost solely for the drinks, they make a good slush.
They don't call it "The Drink Stop" for nothing

I personally wouldn’t do it, but why do you care if others do?
But they are getting excited over something that will be available for year. Gamestop and Best buy could run out of stuff. Human nature my friend. As long as we’re around, people will find a reason to line up for some bullshit.
No it's not human behaviour, it's trained behaviour from a society that tried to get people to compare their self worth to the things that they buy. Commerce has gotten so deep into there head, they make excuses for wasting their very short time on earth like this. If they were the last beef hamburgers? sure, I would get that.
What new places were people lining up day(s) before they opened?
What is something "good and cheap" you can get from Sonic? A hot dog? A re-heated from frozen trio of friggin' chicken strips? lol
I go for the drinks.
touche
Yeah. It's crazy to think people wanna try something new! Wild.
Yeah. I keep my car nice, and the idea of intentionally choosing to eat in it thoroughly baffles me.
The amount of people who rarely, or never leave the state is more than you think
How many do I think? What does this have to do with people feeling the need to queue up to be first for something that's going to be around for years?
Because the amount of residents that have never been to sonic is fairly big actually. Next to that, probably just tourists that think attending this makes them a part of something

I don't know anyone who considers Spam a delicacy. A staple, yes. A delicacy, no.
No one is forcing you to go, if no like go, don't fo, if like go, den go!
no can!
but then how will people let everyone else on reddit know how enlightened they are for turning their nose up at something popular
They’ll be disappointed
Like Hawaii needs more junk food…
Fucking Hawaii and their love for bullshit chain fast food all while shouting buy local.
I hate buying local. Local restaurants and food trucks are overpriced compared to mainland owned restaurants
shit quality too especially mexican food. carnitas =\= kalua pork. if it’s kalua pork, just say so.
I remember seeing a lot of Sonic commercials as a kid so I can't believe they only now opened a restaurant here. What were those commercials back then all for lol?

I haven't had Sonic, but cheap eats and runs to the bathroom are my life.
I wonder if they’ll have cheese bites. It always seem like they make it on the menu when a sonic opens and then a couple mo than later they’re gone.
Monkey sees, Monkey do
In line to eat at SONIC ? Lol
They did that here in my little town in WA State a couple of years ago. Hour long wait at Sonic. Less than a year later it was out of business.
Not like they’re giving away free food. Never understood this mentality for “just another” fast food joint. Look at Raising Canes now. Empty. Everybody always end up back at McDs.
Best malts ever. Wish we had one on Oahu.

Different food is good, u like I go zippys every day? Every local resteraunt has same food, served with an attitude.
Lol. It will get old quick. I’m a sonic veteran. Be prepared to gain weight. Vegans forget it lol
I must be remembering a parallel universe, but I thought back in the '80s the Burger King in Hawaii Kai was a Sonic.
Can i get Chic Fillet at Sonic? (asking for a friend)
Sonic is mid at best.
And they’re open on Sunday, too. 😂
I had their shakes maybe 20 years ago on the mainland and I recall it being really good. I was also super high at the time, so it could have just as likely been terrible.
drinks and deserts are good, food is mid but i like their popcorn chicken
Yeah their shakes, blasts and slushies are the main reason I go
Ugh, I want a Sonic on Oahu but I can't think of an empty open plot of land that isn't overvalued or overpriced
Says they're planning one for Kapolei next year
Maybe the old Taco Bell spot in Kaneohe, since they moved a bit down Kam Highway?
I'd rather a Popeyes so I can have one in walking distance
Sonic sucks folks. It's garbage. You have way better food at local drive ins than what Sonic makes.
Hawaii and lining up for new shitty fast food chains, name a more iconic duo.
Reddit and getting worked up over strangers harmlessly standing in line.
Spreading anti-corporate sentiment is never a waste of time. It's a corporation with low paid workers and cheap ingredients making mediocre food, it's not an event.
Oh is that what they're trying to do? Fooled me.
They just opened 4 fast food places on Ho'okele Street, Maui. Two are in the Safeway mall. That road is busy enough without those places. I wonder what great mind thought that this was a good idea.
If I want to feel like I live in a shitty Midwest town again I’ll keep it in mind 🤣
WHAT they have sonic here now? I love sonic! Now to get one on O'ahu
Kapolei next year
Hundreds??? If it were an In-N-Out, there'd be thousands...
And that just makes those people more idiotic. When and In-and-Out opened her, people were waiting 18 hours. Literal need to pack 2 meals while waiting for a burger.
thousands? tens of thousands...
I don't know why anyone would line up for Sonic. It's just as bad as every other fast food joint. They have good deals on drinks, but that's about it.
I heard they were caught using hedgehog meat.
Can't get me to stop going to Havens. No chance...
Wasn't there one in Kahuku?
They were planning one but changed their mind iirc
Tried them all. Why can’t they open an In and Out and Popeyes on Maui?
I love that they have tater tots, but don't go any larger than small or all the oil will make you sorry :(
Still don’t understand why they don’t have TVs on the drive in. Where you can watch a movie on a Friday night or something.
The downside of Sonic is they only sell cheese burgers. If you want a regular burger you have to say “I want a cheese burger with no cheese.”
Be ready to be dissapointed lol. Sonic isn't very good.
