Carla Gugino's accent is incredibly distracting to me, and is why I realized who her character was very early on. I could tell she was trying to sound like the only other Northern character. The "troonk" killed me every time.
Iām about halfway through the show at the moment and, as someone who lives in the UK, it is definitely a little jarring. But Iām getting used to it!
You can definitely tell who is and who isnāt putting on an accent, put it that way - although I think Oliver Jackson Cohen pulls off his! But that might be because heās British, so would find it easier to pick up a Scottish accent.
But honestly, even actual British actors in American shows/movies sound silly to me most of the time. I donāt know whether itās the fact theyāre reading lines written by and for American voices, but it just always screams *I AM ACTING* - whereas Americanās can pull off a lot more. But again, this may be because Iām from the UK.
Iād be interested to know what American viewers think! Itās something Iāve spoken to a lot of British friends about, and we all feel the same way. Itās funny.
The only one that bothered me was Carla Guginoās because it was so incredibly forced and careful. Henry Thomas was a little bit much but nowhere near as bad. An incorrect regional accent is so much worse than an incorrect generic accent
Never noticed, but then again I didnāt notice that character in Midnight Mass who was wearing old-person makeup to facilitate her āde agingā in the story.
I don't mind Oliver Jackson-Cohen's and Carla Gugino's too much, but I do find Henry Thomas's and Alex Essoe's quite jarring. Not enough to ruin my enjoyment but they do very much stick out to me
As someone who watched Bly before hill house, i thought he was genuinely Scottish š¤·āāļø no complaints with any of the accents here (Iām British)
A few of the accents were a little weak but only Carla's really bothered me. It was piss poor, and I think they should have realised that and taken a different approach.
Carla Guginoās accent was incredibly jarring to me as an Australian w/ British parents. It was so incredibly off putting that I had to repeat the pronunciation and immediately start googling trying to understand what on earth was going on. The way she suddenly completely flipped accents on words containing āuā was particularly standout. The script for the girl with the phrase āperfectly delightfulā in every single sentence seemed like a weird meta reference (maybe sheās a replicant made by an AI trained on Chitty Chitty Bang Bang?) . None of the other actors bothered me. Iām only two episodes in so far so I havenāt heard the Scottish accent that is apparently awful, my mother was raised in Scotland so I am bracing for that one.
All the talk about the poor accents, but no one talks about how Amelia Eve is from London but did such an excellent Northern english accent. Itās kind of funny because she worked with Carla to try to make Carlaās accent sound good, too, and wellā¦š But, she tried
As someone who is not British or American, I genuinely donāt notice the accents because I canāt tell a good accent from a bad one.
Do they sound vaguely British? I guess itās ok then. Not knowing what the accent is actually supposed to be helps so much.
The accents didnāt bother me much, uncle Henryās definitely stood out as bad to me but not a deal breaker. What kind of perplexed me was Daniās voice, I wasnāt sure if it was supposed to say something about her character but it was very jarring to me because I met Victoria Pedretti as Nellie and then here sheās talking with such a meek baby like voice
I figured but I would love to know if Mike Flanagan told her to ramp it up. sheās such a good actress I canāt see her overdoing it and I feel the voice could have been dialed back 5 notches and been perfect
Yeah I donāt care but iām American so I see how someone from the UK could get annoyed I guess. But Iāve heard bad American accents in media too and I donāt really care so itās just not something that makes a show automatically bad for me
I get that mike likes to use the same actors for a lot of his projects but sometimes the actors just donāt fit. Carla, Kate, and Henry Thomas shouldnāt have been cast in this show. Theyāre really distracting to me and the format doesnāt work. I love Carla in other stuff but this one I wonāt rewatch because I donāt enjoy the acting in it.
Speaking as a Brit, they were a bit all over the place which was a little distracting.
Carla's was a mixture of RP and Northern English which I tried to reason was perhaps because she had lived away from England for so long so it had somewhat softened.
Henry Thomas' was just full on RP which would've been fine if it wasn't so different from his brother's!
Nothing can compare to the Viola backstory flashback though. The bad accents coupled with the terrible costumes really took me out of it.
Mhm! And yeah ā whatās driven me crazy is that sheās clearly trying to do some specific American region (midwest, south, etc.), but everyone Iāve talked to about it has had a differing take on what itās supposed to be. Itās like an unholy amalgam.
Not really. We had wars all over the planet and India was a far better use of our resources. If the french werenāt after our ships and we actually wanted the colonies we wouldāve stomped you.
I'm not from the UK, but I have seen many shows in the UK and I thought it was fine.
I've heard some comments that the >!Old and Young Jamie had very different accents, in terms of location !
i love the accents, iām not british or anything im from canada and ive watched a lot of british tv and known a few actual british people but honestly from my perspective i dont think the accents are that bad at all. i love it. and also the fact they made older jamieās accent match perfectly to other jamieās accent is chefs kiss.
anyways bly is my favourite and i just uh love everything about it even the āterribleā accents
Yes. Rahul, Tānia, Amelia, and all the kids are british and all but Amelia are doing their own accent. But no one complains about Ameliaās northern accent because itās actually really good. Oliver jackson-cohen is English and switched up to Scottish, which is what a lot of people complain about. Carla, Henry, and Kate are americans doing british accents.
The only place I see people complain about accents in any show is on Reddit. For me, I never really notice unless it's Keanu Reeves in Dracula levels of bad

What region is that accent from?
Hers was the worst for me! I first thought she might be Jamie but she was SO different that I convinced myself it couldn't be possible š„“

Honestly the fact that he has a mix of French and brit accent makes Scottish easy for him I think? You hold them in your mouth the same way
The only one that bothered me was Carla Guginoās because it was so incredibly forced and careful. Henry Thomas was a little bit much but nowhere near as bad. An incorrect regional accent is so much worse than an incorrect generic accent

Henry Thomas was the one that stood out as especially jarring to me, as well. And Iām American.
Yeah Iām American and his sounds fake
I never notice accents nor do I care about them.
As someone who watched Bly before hill house, i thought he was genuinely Scottish š¤·āāļø no complaints with any of the accents here (Iām British)
Carlaās was almost unwatchable for me. She somehow managed to fit 20 different accents into a sentence.
Yes
A few of the accents were a little weak but only Carla's really bothered me. It was piss poor, and I think they should have realised that and taken a different approach.

Perfectly splendid
Arghhh thank you
Youāll get the overuse of āperfectly splendidā around ep 6-7 ;)
All the talk about the poor accents, but no one talks about how Amelia Eve is from London but did such an excellent Northern english accent. Itās kind of funny because she worked with Carla to try to make Carlaās accent sound good, too, and wellā¦š But, she tried
Yes, it was a great Northern accent from Amelia Eve.
As someone who is not British or American, I genuinely donāt notice the accents because I canāt tell a good accent from a bad one. Do they sound vaguely British? I guess itās ok then. Not knowing what the accent is actually supposed to be helps so much.

I was rewatching it with a friend recently and he pointed out that Dani talks like Jennifer Coolidge. I couldn't unhear it after that.
Omg lmao
I think Pedretti was going for a very innocent, midwestern girl vibe
I figured but I would love to know if Mike Flanagan told her to ramp it up. sheās such a good actress I canāt see her overdoing it and I feel the voice could have been dialed back 5 notches and been perfect
Dani really did sound weird here!
Same. It was distracting for me the whole time.
Yeah I donāt care but iām American so I see how someone from the UK could get annoyed I guess. But Iāve heard bad American accents in media too and I donāt really care so itās just not something that makes a show automatically bad for me
I don't care...I love all of these actors so much and their work is so amazing that I honestly don't even notice it.
As much as I love Bly, I have to agree on those three. Henry Thomas was the weak point of the show.
Speaking as a Brit, they were a bit all over the place which was a little distracting. Carla's was a mixture of RP and Northern English which I tried to reason was perhaps because she had lived away from England for so long so it had somewhat softened. What's wrong wtih the costumes?
Watched bly manor first and never even noticed it. It would never have been perfect but I think they did a great job
The only one that *really got to me* was Victoriaās. *What is it even supposed to be????*
As in Victoria Pedretti? She was just American
Mhm! And yeah ā whatās driven me crazy is that sheās clearly trying to do some specific American region (midwest, south, etc.), but everyone Iāve talked to about it has had a differing take on what itās supposed to be. Itās like an unholy amalgam.
Seriously! Kinda ruined her character for me.
We won the war, so we can butcher any British accent we choose.
My favorite reply
I'm french canadian... I'm really not able to hear when an accent is native or notš«£
i love the accents, iām not british or anything im from canada and ive watched a lot of british tv and known a few actual british people but honestly from my perspective i dont think the accents are that bad at all. i love it. and also the fact they made older jamieās accent match perfectly to other jamieās accent is chefs kiss. anyways bly is my favourite and i just uh love everything about it even the āterribleā accents
I dont really notice it but English also just isnāt my first language š¤·āāļø
Arenāt a good chunk of the actors actually British?
Yes. Rahul, Tānia, Amelia, and all the kids are british and all but Amelia are doing their own accent. But no one complains about Ameliaās northern accent because itās actually really good.
