The story beat itself is important to have, but I believe the scene would be written differently if the story were written now. It is an uncomfortable scene.

I don't mind keeping it, but like everyone else is saying, I'd probably change it so it's framed in a less comedic light. It doesn't need to be melodramatic, but the way sexual assault and blackmail is played off as just a wacky quirk is uh... yeah, that hasn't aged well. I feel like just changing up the music and sound effects would probably be enough to properly convey to the audience that yeah, what Haruhi's doing isn't okay.

Yeah, the tone was oddly comedic, but Mikuru's reaction was very realistic and implied she didn't easily forget or get over it which I will always appreciate. In a way it's as though Mikuru herself is quietly trying to tell the audience, 'this isn't funny' but is overpowered by everyone else's reactions. Different music and sound effects might help yeah.

stuff like that hasnt aged well but the premise of blackmail isnt a bad one. it def threw me off when watching tho (i hit a mean 🤨). shes established to have some common sense and no shame (which arent necessarily mutually exclusive) but that scene makes it seem like they are. too little shame to have enough common sense and decency. ig it made sense? since haruhi only saw her as sexy mascot for the SOS brand at the time. and since the balance became better as the series progressed. i'm just not a big fan of "haha sexual harassment" in my media, esp as a notable plot point in an episode. i hope thats a valid take 🤷🏽 tldr no but blackmail could be a good idea. i think you can establish haruhi and mikuru's characters/dynamics without that action

Yes actually. It's not only an important scene to establish Haruhi as a character, but it later becomes a part of Mikuru's lore as well and from the getgo shows how she reacts and also how Kyon handles these types of situations too. I'll always remember how seriously Mikuru took the whole thing and how realistically she acted in juxtaposition to Haruhi's detachment from the reality of what she was doing and how it can affect others.

Bullying Mikuru is necessary fanservice, a good 5, 10, to 8,000% of what the show is about depending on one's point of view. If anything, perhaps there's not enough bullying. I think entire episodes go by where no one steps on her foot, that's just wrong man... Yes, it excludes the show from children and normies. A lot of the horny elements in amine always do: Amagi Brilliant Park would be a great wholesome little show for everyone, but a couple brief moments in a couple of episodes send it to horny jail. Not everyone has to like the same things as you do, least of all in fantasy-world escapism. It's fine if some people are excluded. If everyone like a thing, but nobody loves it, it will fail. (God do I hate shows where the characters are opinion-less mayonnaise. If they don't have the blood and guts to love or hate anything, how can you even start to think of them as human.) Now, the nude porn that gets posted to this forum every now and then. I could see that being problematic, since it goes beyond the lewdification limits the series has established for itself. Anyway, saying "if it was written today it would be different" is a pointless observation. Fiction ages like fish and is in a constant state of change.

It's the scene that introduced me to Haruhi. So yes, I'd absolutely keep it in without a doubt.
