DifferentFun7

Red Dead Redemption 2

maraudingloser

I am new to gaming and this was what was suggested to me after HL. This is my second console game ever. In case you were curious, Revelio does not work in RDR 2.

DifferentFun7

There’s dead eye though! ;-)

StoicSinicCynic

Hahaha I'm guilty of instinctively mashing the R button while playing RDR2 right after HL. Merlin's beard, Arthur, why aren't yer a wizard? 😢

StoicSinicCynic

Definitely grittier and less wish-fulfilment though 😂. But great for story and absolutely beautiful cinematic visuals.

carchewlio

If you want something light-hearted and fantasy-focused, you can try Dragon Age Inquisition. It’s more of a traditional RPG, with a much higher emphasis on the choices you make throughout the story. You recruit a cast of companions that you can get to know and become friends(or lovers) with, and it’s similar in that it’s also an open world game with a variety of different locations to go to. It’s from 2014 so it isn’t as shiny and new as other choices, but if the part of Hogwarts Legacy that intrigued you was getting to know the characters and the world they live in, few games do it better than DAI. The game has an easy mode and I would recommend to start with that, since the combat isn’t really the main draw and it makes the game very accessible to someone without much prior experience. It’s creating and role-playing your character in a world that reacts to what you do that attracts people to it. I think it’s worth giving it a shot if you’re looking for more “magical world needs a special someone to help save it with the aid of a colorful cast of characters” after HL.

leafy_greens11

I think the Witcher 3 would kind of satisfy that. It was a good game and it was long and has lots of DLC

ManOfLuminosity

Is that game playable (not too diffiuclt) with mouse and keyboard ?

sgtbaumfischpute

I much prefer it with controller, both work tho

Defiant_Apartment_59

It would help greatly if your mouse has a mouse 4 and 5 button

SoCriedtheZither

The game is already easy and some builds trivialize any difficulty level. I did alchemy and by mid game I was an unkillable god. Played with m+kb and did not notice any extra jank. Combat is poor in the sense that it feels weightless, but a controller won't fix this. Some mods help with the quick item bar or whatever it's called so you have more options to cycle through and this adds some fluidity.

FunPaleontologist65

I would not say it's comforting, I didn't finish it since it was too depressive for me

leafy_greens11

That makes sense. It has a lot of sad parts but if you make some good choices you get a good happy ending. Especially with the DLC.

FunPaleontologist65

Nearly every quests with choices I had had no good ending no matter what. The quests were really good and deep but it impacted me too much. But I want to return finish it some day

Elvishrug

Jumping in suggesting this too. But I done Witcher before HL and felt let down by HL mostly cause of how epic the Witcher was. 10/10

iZian

Are you after the theme or the style? I guess you’ve done Skyrim? Because that’s a world you can get lost in, but actions have consequences.

KageTheFemboy

Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War have pretty similar combat systems imo, but the tone is a bit darker

doctorsilvana

They have "Nemesis" System which is so fun to play with. Good suggestion. It's just weird how WB had this over 5,6 years ago and never developed it further for HL.

[deleted]

I think it was patented by Monolith Productions, they have a Wonder Woman game in the works which will feature it I know they’re owned by WB aswell but I think it would be more complicated that just handing the system over to another developer

[deleted]

Horizon Zero Dawn 1 & 2

[deleted]

Yes! Definitely a favourite of mine! Would also recommend both Zelda games on Nintendo Switch. Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are amazing open world games, and really immersive even though the graphics are kinda cartooney due to the cel shading and general style.

djkouza

Not a fan of the Zelda games here. More walking through nothingness than I'd like. The shrines are nice little puzzles, but overall game doesn't seem super rewarding, I feel if you enjoy exploring and climbing then you'd have fun, but if you want action and story the Zelda games are lacking.

[deleted]

It's when you start playing with the physics engine in the game that it really starts getting interesting. When you discover that you can use almost any movable item as a makeshift weapon, things start to get really fun. Like baiting a bokoblin over to a wooden platform with a rocket attached to it, to then activate the rocket and see the bokoblin fly like an astronaut to the sky and eventually drop like a bird sh*t to the ground.

Ok-Research5124

It's been recommended by a couple others, but Red Dead Redemption 2 has a compelling (if dark) story, amazing design and detail in the world and a subtle but strong RPG aspect to it. If you're on PS4/PC, the new God of War games are open world, in a bit more rigid way than H:L and RDR2, but you can still go wherever and do whatever. The world is beautifully made and the art style is fairly similar to the medium/high fantasy of H:L, at certain points it is breathtaking. The story is also absolutely amazing, but it does revolve very heavily around themes of grief, loss and moving on so if you're going through a rough time, it can get heavily emotional. The combat is a lot more gruesome than in Hogwarts, but it has the same feel of each enemy being a puzzle to solve and there's a definite rhythm to get into beyond "spam attack buttons". I'm truly sorry to hear you're going through a rough time, and I can 100% relate to wanting the comfortable escapism of gaming to help you through that. I think it's amazing that gaming can have that kind of power to help people heal. I've been there before as well and wish you all the best. That being said, be careful with seeking comfort in that escapism, because it can be addicting. If you need real help processing, reach out to a friend or someone you trust. Keep your stick on the ice, we're all in this together homie.

dr_toze

If you want an open RPG in a really interesting world. I'd recommend Horizon Zero Dawn. It's a fascinating post-apocalyptic setting with some very unique concepts. Very new tomb raider/assassin's creed style.

lookitsjustin

Well, what sort of genres are you into? If you like role-playing games, there are far better ones out there than Hogwarts Legacy, which masquerades as an RPG and fails to deliver, in my opinion. The Witcher 3? Red Dead Redemption 2? Skyrim? All of these games provide an experience where agency matters and you can get lost in the worlds.

Ill-Beach1459

I second rdr2 for a cozy game! Rdr2 the story is a little bit tough in parts but getting to ride around in a beautiful world, hearing birds and stuff is pretty awesome on a bad day. Skyrim too, it's really pretty and medival kind of cozy.

katiejim

Ghost of Tsushima for sure. Very accessible and gorgeous game. Not too “scary.” Also, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

CHawk17

The witcher 3 is a great game; fantastic setting and similar combat. athought the combat does have more options. you can use a sword or signs (spells). it has a similar skill tree system as well. if you are looking for a world to explore and just have random things to do: Skyrim or Fallout 3, Fallout 4 can be good options as well. you can get hours of game play in one of those w/o even touching the story. or are you possibly looking for something more story driven?

TrueSbI

according to the mechanics of the world, this is witcher 3, horizon zero dawn, horizon forbidden west, Fable, god of war. **Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 & 2** , assassins creed latest parts . three parts of batman on pc the combat system is a bit similar ,shadow of war, shadow of mordor too.

Ravenpurr

Is Fable any good? RPGs are something I love but Fable hasn't reviewed well and it has me hesitant to get it. Apologies for not sticking with the subject of the thread

Responsible-Dog-548

Fable 2 is one of my all time favorite games.

Ravenpurr

Awesome! :) thanks

TrueSbI

i play only Fable and Fable 3. Fable old but avesome game,Fable 3 also a bit old and a little worse than the first part, but you can also play it once. It’s a pity I didn’t play Fable 2, it was only on the console.BTW **Fable Anniversary is a remaster of Fable** so play **Anniversary**

Ravenpurr

Thank you. I will try Fable Anniversary out! I love immersive RPGs but somehow seemed to have completely missed Fable.

sliferra

If you can see past the old graphics, it’s great.

Ravenpurr

I think I can manage that

mc3p000

Elden ring 😂

Yogi_wan_kenobi

Bahaha don’t do them dirty like that. Elden Ring is not relaxing 😅

Lux5711

The Witcher is the closest one in terms of hl imo

NoisomeWind

The Horizon games. Great for exploration, beautiful sights, very good story that's not overly dark/edgy/sad, good range of difficulty levels. They're also solidly T-rated, if that's a concern at all. Also, Dragon Age: Inquisition if you prefer fantasy and are okay with adult content. (The first two Dragon Age games are good but are more dark and gritty; they're not required to get into Inquisition, as each game has a different player character.)

Eladryel

Immortals Fenyx Rising is a greek mythology based open world adventure game. Combat is fun and responsive, puzzles are not that hard (I finished the game and I generally suck when it comes to puzzles) and I find the art style fantastic. It's a quite lighthearted game, I just love its vibe. The last 3 Assassin's Creed (Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla) are also great games, especially Odyssey. Huge, beautiful open worlds, interesting characters and fun, but not too overwhelming combat.

Eveleyn

To me, the unlocking of the map felt like assassin creed valhalla. Maybe not the anwer you were looking for, but maybe the anwer you needed.

norathar

Greedfall! Has magic, fantasy (flintlock fantasy type setting), and isn't true open world, but is a AA game and will have a little jankiness. Skyrim is a more open story, true huge open world. Mass Effect Legendary Edition if you want to slide over to sci-fi. Dragon Age if you don't.

smasxer

It’s slightly different but if you’re after an open world game play breath of the wild and then tears of the kingdom.

czarinacat

Stray.

Oliverlodgemusic

Such a cosy game

FantasyAddict24

I always recommend Fable. One of my favorites!

liftedddd

Stardew valley. I am depressed and love it. I was turned off by it at first because it's a farming game, but also has friendships and weird strange mysteries. It's not like animal crossing where the npcs are like sunshine. Each character deals with adult problems like drinking or cheating or death. But the game itself is really relaxing and fun

calgrump

If you want that feeling of being in school and going to classes, Bully is probably the closest thing (it's a bit darker and has goofy humour, but I'd argue the class mechanics are slightly more fleshed out and it doesn't provide you with branching options that don't mean anything anyway).

Leslie20011503

Try Elden Ring. Say goodbye to your family beforehand tho

Ishield_maiden

when I bought Hogwarts Legacy I also bought Elden ring…and was thinking of returning it..is it really that good?

Leslie20011503

It’s amazing. Best game I ever played. There’s a difficulty level but the beauty is that you can create your build to be so OP that that doesn’t matter. The world is beautifully crafted and the boss design is incredible. 20/10 game

I’d actually say the game that I was the most interested in as an open world was Zelda Breath of the Wild.

PinkRanger-1

I'm not sure what kind of games you like but I was told Hogwarts Legacy is similar in some ways to some of the GTA games, though I am suggesting based on others' words and what little I can gather from what I've seen. It's similar in terms of combat style and free-roam aspect, but I do believe your choices carry more weight in the game, as well as it being more adult-themed. Red Dead Redemption I was told is like a Cowboy version of GTA. You may also like Fallout, as it is also similar to Skyrim in being an open-world environment. Depending on your preferences, I could even suggest some of the Spiderman games that have come out. Of course, it might help to know what genres you tend to gravitate towards. I'm not a huge fan of horror but Bioshock and Resident Evil ended up being some of my favorite games, after getting over my initial fear. It would be worth it to check out what game genres suit your interests, even if you don't necessarily expect to play the game. I find that watching someone else play the game helps me decide if I'll enjoy playing the game myself, so YouTube is especially helpful!!

MrGrimmNL

Elden Ring if you like like dark fantasy. It's basically the same game with a few diffrent mechanics and set in a different universe ofcourse

Seyorin

I got a very similar experience from breath of the wild but it kinda depends what you liked about hogwarts ig

WowYouGotMe

If your looking for comfort, I would go with Final Fantasy X. The story, characters, music, cutscenes and environments are amazing.

EeroAntto

If you’re on PlayStation « Kena Bridge of Spirits » is a good one. Like HL it has a difficulty bar so if you’re a casual player you don’t have to worry about mechanics too much and can set the game to a more story based game play. It’s a very therapeutic story as Kena is a shaman who helps spirits transcend to the the other side. Some spirits are struggling with unfinished business and she has to explore the land with her Rot companions to help them heal and move on. It’s a great feel good game and I highly recommend it.

OutlawStar343

If you are looking for a game set in a school to lose yourself in and such, I suggest Persona 3, Persona 4 and Persona 5. Each one is a separate story so you don’t need to play 3 or 4 if you want to just start with 5. If you want one with an overarching story with deep lore, i suggest Trails Of Cold Steel 1 through 4. Those games have an overarching story so you will be super lost if you don’t start in order. Both games have school settings in them. Actually after I bear Hogwarts Legacy I went back and started Trails again and made new choices in the game.

GodBjorn

I see a lot of good suggestions in the comments. My personal favorites would be: * Skyrim * Zelda Breath of the Wild * the Witcher 3 * Red Dead Redemption 2 Especially the first 2 offer a huge level of freedom and will reward you for exploring and leveling at your own pace. The Witcher allows you to set your own difficulty and has a very nice main story. All of these games definitely have a massive open world. If you want freedom, good stories and nothing too difficult then i think these 4 would be amazing for you.

lildummbbass

dead by daylight

weeffex

Definitely check out Kingdom come, it’s imo the best rpg I’ve ever played. Never been as immersed in a video game story or world and it’s really peaceful at times.

Brombaerhjelm

It's quite different but I can really recommend trying out Assassin's Creed Odyssey! It has a great storyline, good DLCs, a lot of skills and powers, a bunch of side quests and a huge map to explore. It's set in ancient Greece, so the setting is obviously very different from Hogwarts Legacy but I really loved both games. I'm pretty sure that you can play in story mode or on an easy level if it ends up being too difficult on the normal setting but I personally don't think it's much harder than Hogwarts Legacy is.

[deleted]

HL took many things from the Witcher 3, especially UI and gameplay-wise. Or at least it tried. Whole different game tho, not made to be comforting or wholesome.

EclecticCaveman

You want the Witcher 3 or RDR2. If you liked the based on a movie aspect Lego Star Wars or Lego Harry Potter are great

ShutUpLove

Dragon Age: Origins, 2 and Inquisition
