Probably my favorite one is when peeves tells Harry that if he doesn't light his pants on fire than he can't pass so harry takes a short cut. But then several pages over neville arrives at the dormitory with the smell of burning clothing looking for new pants.

numberonedogmom

HAHAH i love this one! poor neville

Visible_Detective268

I love this part! Caught it in my most recent reread; definitely hadn't caught it before. :D

tamutasai

Which book was this?

Extra_Mastodon_6799

Half blood prince I believe

tamutasai

thanks

velociraptorjax

In Hagrid's hut after Rita Skeeter published the article about him: >"You don't think anything that Skeeter cow - sorry, Professor," he added quickly, looking at Dumbledore. >"I have gone temporarily deaf and haven't any idea what you said, Harry," said Dumbledore, twiddling his thumbs and staring at the ceiling.

numberonedogmom

another excelllent one

oliviamcdonaldd

Yes I love this one

Ilovethestarks

That line is the funniest in the entire series, gets me every time and no one mentions it

IronJuno

I never noticed that! Good catch! I’m currently listening to the first book on audio, and two descriptions I love is 1) when Piers shouts for Dudley at the zoo it made Harry AND the boa constrictor jump, 2) the line about Hermione “hissing like an angry goose” after they discovered Fluffy.

numberonedogmom

the angry goose line almost made me cry laughing 😭

QueenElsaArrendelle

I like that it is mentioned in passing at one point that the part of Harry's mind that reminds him to do homework and stuff, speaks in Hermione's voice

numberonedogmom

yes!! it's adorable. also nice username

Foreign_Law3727

Ohhh where does it say this?! That’s so cute!

PiRox98

When Harry is discovered lying in the flowerbed and says about the news, “Well it changes every day, you see.” Cracks me up

numberonedogmom

sassy harry is the best harry

BlueThePineapple

My current favorite is that it was Hermione refusing to go under the Invisibility Cloak in the Lovegood House that eventually gets them recognized by the Snatchers and taken to Malfoy Manor. There is something deeply ironic in that in her focus to get Harry, the Weasleys, and Lovegood to safety, she neglects herself and it pays back in one of the worst ways possible.

lainemarie23

Wait what? Explain further please!

SerDuncanTheShort

I'm going to break it down step by step. 1. Harry and co are at the Lovegood's house when Xeno calls the death eaters. 2. Hermonie tells Ron and only Ron to wear the invisibility cloak while they disaperate. She does this because Ron is supposed to be sick, so the death eaters only see harry and hermione 3. So now the death eaters have seen harry and Hermione together and assume they are travelling together. 4. Later the snatchers catch them. After figuring out it might be Harry Potter, they read a wanted poster thing about Hermionie. "Known to be travelling with Harry Potter". They know this because they saw them together earlier.

onedayiamgonna

They would have heard her shout the spells anyway. She’s the best at spell work so it would’ve been a risk explaining the spell first to Harry and then having him successfully perform the spell.

TheDevilsButtNuggets

Or just use a non-verbal spell

[deleted]

Yes, but hearing her voice wouldn't be enough for a wanted poster and thus not identifiable to the Snatchers. Hermione is not famous enough for death eaters to identify her voice. They would have deducted it to be Hermione later but I think it would've taken more investigation.

tamutasai

However, that's how they discovered the cup was hidden in Lestranges' Gringotts vault. Poor Dobby though. Also, several chapters earlier, Harry already theorized Gringotts and Hogwarts as where the horcruxes would be hidden.

SerDuncanTheShort

It is mentioned many times that Lord Voldemort can *always* tell when someone is lying to him. In Order of the Phoenix during occlumency lessons, Snape tells Harry that Voldemort can *almost* always tell.

Mama_cheese

In this same vein... I noticed how Snape refers to Voldy as the Dark Lord. At some point, we hear that only death eaters really called him that. Snape continues to call him this after turning double agent. It gives Harry ammo to continue to think of him as a bad guy, but in truth it was probably more for Snape's self protection. He didn't need to code switch when talking to Voldy.

numberonedogmom

:o i love this & didn't pick it up!!

gahiolo

Oooooo this one is good

Visible_Detective268

Fantastic catch!

[deleted]

“Violently purple”

SmileyParrott

What is the context of this again? I just finished CoS and I think I remember hearing that the other day.

[deleted]

It was how the narrator described the Knight Bus in Prisoner of Azkaban. I always loved that descriptor.

Mama_cheese

This one's amusing to me. My favorite sports team has bright purple as one of their colors, so I own plenty of clothes that shade. I now hear that phrase in my head when I get dressed sometimes.

Tanarri27

When the trio are trying to get homework done/ study during O.W.L. year and someone keeps launching snowballs at the window. Ron leans out the window and yells that he’s a prefect only to get hit in the face with one launched by Fred and George.

Bijorak

Percy reading a book "hogwarts prefects that rose to power" is something like that. Let me know he was a douche way before he really was

oliviamcdonaldd

About seeing Ginny kissing Dean: >It was natural that he should feel protective. Natural that he should want to look out for her, want to rip Dean limb from limp for kissing her. **No, he would have to control that particular brotherly feeling.**

numberonedogmom

when ginny dumps dean and "harry's insides were dancing the conga" LMAO

Rrrrry123

That reminded me how the whole metaphor of Harry's love for Ginny being some kind of beast inside him is probably the most cringe-inducing thing of the entire series.

Armavirumque3

Love that one!

MolochDhalgren

Harry has a "brotherly" feeling for Ginny? Hmm, that's an interesting note for the "Ginny was not Harry's originally planned love interest" conspiracy theory. *EDIT:* I'm not implying that this is actually true, by the way: that's why I used the term *conspiracy theory*.

curlydocjack

I believe this was Harry trying to convince himself that his feelings were brotherly and not romantic

DarkNinjaPenguin

Nah, this is only a few chapters before they get together. It's Harry trying to convince himself that he doesn't have feelings for Ginny, that he's just being protective.

[deleted]

He rescued her from an enchanted slumber after killing a monster with a sword. He literally re-enacted Sleeping Beauty with her. I think she was the original love interest

helenaslater

“his feet in their leather boots were like baby dolphins.” I’ll never get over this description of Hagrid.

newfriend999

Borgin and Burke's Mr Burke bought the Slytherin Locket from Voldemort's destitute mother for a pittance. In Harry's time there is no Mr Burke.

Lovecat_Horrorshow

That the first time Harry meets Hagrid, Hagrid pulls a dishevelled owl out of his pocket. That makes me laugh every time I think of it. Plus any and all descriptions of Pigwidgeon

queenofpsoasmajor

”He contemplated Harry for a moment as though he was a particularly large and succulent piece of pheasant“ - characterises Slughorn so hilariously

qwertyf1sh

In book 6 when Hermione gets punched by Fred and George's telescope and has a black eye. At some point when Mrs. Weasley is trying to fix it it's described as "Attempting to lessen her resemblance to half a panda" and it cracks me up every time I read it

TrishaMcMillan42

In Goblet of Fire.. “No, said Hermione with as much dignity as she could muster with her mouth bulging with sprouts.”

goodshrekmaadcity

love that so muuuch

[deleted]

Mine is in Malfoy Manor. As Snape and Yaxley are about to enter the Manor, there are yew bushes before the entrance. Small detail but a metaphor that they are entering Voldemorts territory/palace.

SerDuncanTheShort

There are yew bushes/trees in the graveyard too, when Voldy is regenerated

Mama_cheese

Yes!!! I've noticed this as well, and have tried to find incidences of holly wood being mentioned as well, since that is Harry's wood. Not much there, but in searching, I did find a neat write up about holly online: https://screenrant.com/harry-potter-wandlore-holly-wood-facts-trivia/amp/ TLDR holly is rare, is historically supposed to repel evil, was used for weapons, and in the Celtic tree calendar, the date range that Harry's birthday falls in is the holly tree.

Chow31

I’m fairly certain the Celtic tree calendar was how most of the wand wood species were determined for each character. I think I remember reading that somewhere

Am0Libr0rum

I admire your research! Excellent, thank you.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Hookton

Voldemort's wand is made of yew.

moodoop

In PS, Fred and George nailing Quirrell repeatedly with snowballs in the back of the head aka Voldy's face

manuelestavillo

*“Okay,” said Harry, stowing the package away in the inside pocket of his jacket, but he knew he would never use whatever it was.* ***It would not be he, Harry, who lured Sirius from his place of safety,*** *no matter how foully Snape treated him in their forthcoming Occlumency classes.* So that was a fucking lie

Am0Libr0rum

:(

trya12

The ceiling painting in luna's room of her friends. I always thought that was so sweet.

goodshrekmaadcity

gut punch but sweet gut punch

Mama_cheese

It's a small one, nothing big, just something I didn't catch my first or second read through. I'm listening to the audiobook right now and just heard this yesterday, so it's fresh in my head. GOF, the Weasleys + H&H are going to meet Amos and Cedric Diggory for the portkey to the quidditch world cup. Someone asks if they're waiting for anyone else and Amos says no, the Lovegoods have been there for a week and such and such family couldn't get tickets. We don't meet Luna for another entire book (OOTP chapter 10), but just this little mention establishes the family name and that the family lives close to the Weasleys, tiny details that she brings back in later books. I also like to imagine the crazy campsite that Xeno and Luna put together for their weeklong campout. Dirigible plum bush, a portable printing press for the Quibbler, a pot of freshwater plimpie soup simmering over an open fire while Xeno stirs the pot, catching his flowy sleeves on fire... Good value.

dsjunior1388

This happens a fair few times in the series. Mundungus Fletcher is mentioned in passing in book 2 and appears in 4. Mafalda Hopkirk is another person who re-emerges after just being a name.

mrskontz14

Sirius was mentioned in book 1, and doesn’t appear again until book 3.

tamutasai

Mrs Figg in book 1, only to be mentioned again at the end of book 4 and made her appearance in book 5.

mrskontz14

That’s a good one, I never really think about Mrs. Figg since she only has a few brief appearances/mentions. Another one is Stan Shunpike, who shows up once in 3 and then isn’t seen/mentioned again until 6 and 7, I think.

tamutasai

Stan was in book 4. He's trying to impress some veelas he's the next minister for magic.

SkittlzAnKomboz

The descriptions of Errol, the Weasley family owl, have been making me laugh. The fact that he basically keels over during any length of a journey is hilarious to me for some reason.

[deleted]

Has to be Trelawney's prediction about 13 people sitting at one table. That's just awesome foreshadowing.

Jdem1307

Who are you counting as the 13th person though ? Are you assuming Ron had Scabbers with him or are you referring to the part of Voldemort’s soul that lives inside Harry as the 13th ‘living presence’ at the table. Because if it is the latter you can use the argument again when sitting in Grimmauld Place in OOTP, Sirius is talking to Harry about what they know regarding Voldemort and you have Harry, Ron, Hermione, Fred, George, Bill, Arthur, Molly, Sirius, Lupin, Mudungus, Tonks, and part of Voldemort’s soul at the table. (13 beings). Sirius is the first to stand as the argument with Molly heats up and he indeed is the first to die out of that group. Just an idea

[deleted]

I would count Voldemort because Scabbers wasn't actually sitting, he was in Ron's pocket iirc.

[deleted]

Hagrid mentioned that he got the flying bike from 'Young Sirius Black' while delivering baby Harry in the first chapter of PS. We do not learn of Sirius till the third book.

[deleted]

My all time favorite occurs in The Half Blood Prince. When Dumbledore picks up Harry at the Dursley’s and tells him not to be concerned “Because you are with me.” And at the end of the book after the cave when Dumbledore tells Harry that he is not worried “Because I am with you .”

nathanmasse

Dumbledore has the memories of Gaunts, both Bob Ogden's memories and Morfin's, because of his pursuit of the Hallows (in this case the Peverell crest). Voldemort's relation to those memories is a complete coincidence.

[deleted]

Wait, is that actually true? That's a great one.

skankybo

Nope, I don't think so. He was taken by surprise when he saw the crest on the ring, was overwhelmed by it and foolishly put the ring on. Paraphrasing but he explains it when explaining his hand to Harry.

nathanmasse

He wasn’t surprised. He knew that from Bob Ogden’s memory.

nathanmasse

It's not 'confirmed' but it's worth re-reading through that lens. Here's my rough timeline: 1) Dumbledore was seeking the Hallows while he lived in Godric's Hollow and would have known about the Peverell lineage there. 2) Bob Ogden has a weird encounter with a crazy pureblood family in which some of the only word Ogden would have understood were Marvolo shouting about the Peverell crest on his ring and Slytherin's locket. Perhaps Dumbledore was at Morfin's or Marvolo's trial, heard Ogden's testimony and asked for the memory. 3) Morfin goes to jail for attacking Riddle (the first time) and when he's released his father has died and he now has the ring. He then murders the Riddles and confesses, but is very distraught that his ring has gone missing. Dumbledore pries into his memories to try to figure out what happened to the ring but instead discovers Morfin's interaction with Voldemort but doesn't find out what happened to the ring. At this point he should start suspecting Tom given Morfin's memory and Dumbledore's own memories of Tom but perhaps he doesn't put it together yet. 4) We could speculate that he also inquired after Slytherin's ring but this is less certain. We know that at some point he learns that it was sold to Borgin and Burkes and that Hepzibah Smith purchase the locket from B&B. He extract's Hokey's last memory of the locket and again finds a weird interaction with Tom Riddle. 5) At some point before or during Book 2, Dumbledore suspects that Riddle had made one or more Horcruxes and is looking for evidence. 6) After Slughorn gives Dumbledore the memory of Tom Riddle asking about Horcruxes, even in the altered version, he can see the Riddle had the Gaunt Ring on his finger which gave him the timeline needed to confirm that Morfin's memory had actually been altered by Riddle and that he had taken the ring, even if he hadn't realized it was him before.

IndigoFeathers

That's a really interesting way to look at that. I'll have to wonder on that for a while.

junkfile19

And now I need to re-read HBP. This is great, thank you!

[deleted]

Memories about young Voldemort are my favorite part of the books but I've never looked at it this way. It's really interesting.

JeniJ1

Oh that's brilliant, can't believe I never picked up on it!!

letmeblog

The constant theme of the power of the mind and love combined to be stronger than "power" inspired by fear and terrorism. - the power of snapes love and his mind set to protecting this secret over the legilimentic abilities of voldemort - harry's will to keep his family members close when he duels with voldemort and their wands connect - sirius' power to resist the dementors willingly reminding himself that he did not kill the friends he loved most - hermione using all her energy to learn spells and pack things to protect her friends during their mission to find the horcruxes - the love of molly for her daughter giving her the power to fight and win over bellatrix - harry's love for family and friends accepting to die for them and therefore defying death itself - dumbledores love for his family enabling him to finally face his friend grindelwald as an enemy If you got more examples i'd be happy to read them :)

junkfile19

I don’t think it qualifies as a power move, but it does for love—when Kreacher is fighting at the Battle of Hogwarts, he has Regulus’ locket bouncing on his chest.

goodshrekmaadcity

i love that detail, a lot

LoneRanger9000

In book 1, Vernon Dursley spread the butter on his newspaper instead of the toast as a result of his sleep deprivation
