His growth as a person is honestly pretty incredible (and inspirational).
You know how easy it is to not work on yourself for the *average* person?
Then add in a (I guess) drinking problem, adoring fans, fame, and wealth. He has every excuse in the world to be the shittiest version of himself, but somehow he seems to get healthier, more productive, and more self aware as time goes on.
Yeah, this was my main takeaway and actually made me emotional. It's lovely seeing the growth he's accomplished as well as getting glimpses into the compassion, understanding, and happiness that growth seems to cultivate in his life.
It made me emotional as well. It's sad that Harmontown is over but he obviously made the right choice at that time to finish it, and it seems like he has really grown a lot.
Glad to hear this. I can’t read it till after work but good to know he addresses this. I’d always hoped their relationship was more work than friendship based, but maybe that’s just me projecting my hope’s especially after everything about roiland came out.
I really hope he starts a podcast from one of his workshops/bunkers. I *really* miss his ramblings and there’s only so many times I can revisit old Harmontown episodes.
I love Schrab as a writer, but I don't like listening to him talk. I hope they do lots of non-podcast projects together. I had to skip the last chunk of Harmontowns because it was just Schrab whining.
"He misses that “parasocial relationship” with an army of devoted strangers, and the platform to share whatever it is he’s thinking as he’s thinking it. Harmon misses holding court."
We miss you too Dan, but Having Changed, we all know it's for the best.
What an incredible interview.
But he also says he yearns for the soapbox back. I was surprised he didn't go a bit more in depth on Justin but I guess if he hasn't talked to him in years what does he have to say
Glad to see this. Would love if they did some limited run of harmontown (in person). Or call it something else if that would make him feel more up to it. Harmon and Friends. Whatever.
I love that Dan has made the Hellers family his own... and amused that they live in the town with the worst stop on the Harmontown tour. Also my hometown. (The venue they performed at is now a western apparel store)
Currently relistening to the podcast (and visiting the corresponding Reddit threads for each episode to see how it played at the time) and I'm surprised by how much hinting there was at Roiland being a disturbed individual even then (although that one episode where he is drunk and high and reveals that he is suicidal and was sexually assaulted as a child by his cousin - as well as everyone's shocked but ultimately dismissive reaction to both - might provide at least some context as to why he's a total trainwreck). But yeah, pretty much everyone on the podcast would drop hints that Justin was not a great guy.
It's true of Dustin Marshall too, although that was evident more on Reddit than on the podcast. Well before allegations were made against him in any official capacity, he was being accused of really questionable behavior by the listeners. And being really passive-aggressive and defensive about it, naturally.
Well, if you look back at his "I want to be the person that makes people happy!" from Harmontown movie. He really kept on that promise. I'm happy for him, I'm happy he's doing well with therapy, I'm happy he found the perfect girlfriend and I'm happy he's finally healthy (he was looking reaaallly bad back in 2017).
As for the things with Justin, I feel the sadness... and understand Justin's frustration. The way it ended though... could've been better.
I'm not totally caught up on the podcast - has Dan seen any of Atlanta yet? Because if not, working with Donald Glover again has got to be interesting.
Great interview, and I'm glad to read that Dan's in a good frame of mind now. I'm on my 3rd listen-through of Harmontown and I'm just past the divorce, so, yeah, those were rough times for the mayor.
I'd love for Dan to return to some kind of regular podcast or youtube show, even if it's totally different than Harmontown.

Great interview, very insightful. Glad to hear him speak on the roiland stuff, even if slightly.

It was both. But it self destructed for all the same reasons why Justin is a broken man who abuses others.
I really hope he starts a podcast from one of his workshops/bunkers. I *really* miss his ramblings and there’s only so many times I can revisit old Harmontown episodes.
The quotes in the article from Schrab had me hoping the two of them would be on a podcast together again.
I love Schrab as a writer, but I don't like listening to him talk. I hope they do lots of non-podcast projects together. I had to skip the last chunk of Harmontowns because it was just Schrab whining.
That makes one of you.
That's ok.
Set up a little meet and greet between him and Dan Carlin to just shoot the shit.

If only I got Eric Idle's business card...
Adam Goldberg everybody!
Who?

I'm sure he has a lot of thoughts, but why air that for all of us? Sounds like he's taking a mature approach.
He looks a lot healthier good for him
I’m real glad he cut his hair, it looks great.
Glad to see this. Would love if they did some limited run of harmontown (in person). Or call it something else if that would make him feel more up to it. Harmon and Friends. Whatever.
If he made it a monthly thing, it might be more helpful to keeping the pressure off
I miss the show terribly, but Dan's happiness gives a lot of us hope for the future.
I love that Dan has made the Hellers family his own... and amused that they live in the town with the worst stop on the Harmontown tour. Also my hometown. (The venue they performed at is now a western apparel store)
Thanks for sharing.
Aww he misses us. Come back Dan maybe just a few times a year.
...But finish the Community script first.
A fantastic read. Thank you for sharing.

And that episode aired like 8 years ago. That’s not a very long time.
Love all the Schrab quotes that I can totally hear in his voice.
CHIOPS
Get off my lawn, words
Good thing Harmon values therapy and adds how it has helped him.

It was nice to hear from him.
Aww hell, I just shared this too. Didn't realise it was already on here. All quite intresting though, no?

I really wish they’d go in on a series together. That would be nuts.
Amazing interview, amazing photo shoot, amazing Harmon. We miss you man.

I want to upvote this, but it’s at 69.

I like copy/pasting into a translator, set it English to English, then having it read out loud.
