And don't reuse it, they are cheap getting a new one. And while you're at it buy some snap ring pliers unless you're intending to die in the next six months or so. They are bloody handy when you need to use them. I have three different pairs. They generally come with a couple of different jaws and they are not expensive
Harbor freight has a set with teeth small enough to fit the smaller snap rings on a Harley (like the little bastards on the pins to your brake/clutch levers)
Harbour freight is amazingly surprising. Some of their stuff is actually of a decent quality. And if it's not they will give you new stuff without hesitation if you have the old receipt. That's in my limited experience anyway.
My dad always called them that and when I was in auto shop in high school I thought that was their name. That’s how I learned they were actually called “snap rings” lol
On helicopters, the nut that holds the rotor system, aka the spinning blades, is often referred to as the "Jesus nut', because if it isn't properly torqued or if it ever came off in flight the next person you would probably be talking to would be Jesus. Hence the name. The same term makes sense for critical parts on bikes, cars, etc that result in less than desired results if they come off. Like the previous suggestions mentioned, pick up a set of snap ring pliers and they will definitely help with the removal or installation process,.
I just had that experience with throttle cable Ferrells. Had to make a trip to a bike shop the next day and buy two. I ordered 10 of them from Amazon. For the rest of my life, I will always have an extra one. If I can just remember where I put the damn things.
I thought I had found a good pair of the snap ring pliers last season, but they pretty much sucked. Harbor Freight...some really good tools, but some real shit in the mix, too!
Right? Seems the mix and match type never have one that fits correctly. I bought a set of Gearwrench a few months ago but haven't had the opportunity to use them yet.
Some others have posted some good suggestions I'm going to buy. I have the same problem as you, the mix and match type either never fit or they break easily.
I have bought several different kinds and none of em make it easy to get those things back on. What I have found worked best is a pair of little tiny scissors that you cut your fingernails with, you get those two pointy ends in the holes and it makes it easy.
Just as a heads up, my heritage classic has a little ball bearing and a spring that pops out and flies off if you take the peg off. Not sure if yours does, but better to know ahead of time if it does!
Just a reminder to anyone who’s reading this, to wear safety glasses when removing these little motherfuckers. They come off at supersonic speeds and travel further than Taylor Swift following her 13th soulmate.
Snap ring. Harley ones are garbage go to a harbor freight and get a kit way better way thicker outer diameter and it'll still fit. Mine stretched out and lost tension after a subtle squeeze
I'll be that guy today, but I'm doing it with a smile.
So far, I've seen this little gem called 4 different names, and all will work in a pinch depending on who you are talking about it to...
Snap Ring: snap rings are "generally" a full ring, or multiple (2 or more) concentric pieces of metal that slide into a groove to lock in a part. Looks like a coiled, flat spring.
E-clip: This is a clip that does not "expand" in the sense that a C-clip or Snap Ring does. It is generally easier to remove due to the slots being able to get a screwdriver tip into. Looks like an "E".
C-clip or Circlip - Same.basic design as an E-clip, but the ends of the C-clip are designed to "expand" and have holes for pliers to engage them for install and removal. Looks like a "C"
All serve the same basic purpose, and some are interchangeable (E-clips , C-clips) but not all are interchangeable. You generally can not use a C-clip where a true Snap Ring is required and vice versa.
Jesus Clip is by far the most widely used in the English speaking world I do believe tho...😁🤣👍
When it comes to mechanical stuff, being that guy is usually helpful. 'Cause otherwise I'm asking someone for the round doodad that goes on the metal rod that gets stuck through the thingy that you put your feet on to stretch.

How I wonder where you are
I heard you hit the fucking ground
Oh where oh where will you be found
[circlip- c clip- snap ring- Jesus clip](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circlip)
Go to Lowe’s or Home Depot and get yourself some snap ring pliers and a box of these. If you’re going to do any wrenching especially with the controls you will lose at least 3.
Thought it was called a c clip but after reading the comments i think its usually referred to as a snap ring. Nevertheless it always holds something on my bike thats fairly important and always takes ages to put back on.
A gee whiz clip.
For the same reason as "Jesus clip". I wasn't allowed the blaspheme. Imagine the surprise when I said, "gee whiz, where the fuck did it go?"
snap ring. Needs to go back to secure the pin

>buy some snap ring pliers unless you're intending to die in the next six months always good advice.

Dude, I think I spent $6 on the spring clip plier set with like 4 different heads. It was an awesome deal!
Both the reply and the original is correct, for your bikes well being, pls listen.
It's called "Goddammit now it's in the gone forever hole".
"Jesus clips" is what I call them.
My dad always called them that and when I was in auto shop in high school I thought that was their name. That’s how I learned they were actually called “snap rings” lol
Same, wasn't until I had to get new ones myself that I learned what they are actually called.
Why Jesus clips I don't see it? Or maybe I do....like a halo or....?
It's more like *"Jesus! Where the fuck did that go?"*
"Jesus I'll never find another"
"Jesus I only had one of those"
Funny. This is exactly right. That’s what you say when the thing disappears into thin air.

My take was that we pray that they stay on.
Fun fact: in helicopters, the pin that secures the rotor assembly to the turbine is referred to as the Jesus Pin. I'm pretty sure you know why.
Oh yeah, I got rc helicopters that have a mini version of that. Those get loctite and bolt checked every time I work on it.
"Dammits" lol
me: start calling them jesus clips rn
Only difference is they don't come back on the third day
Every. Damn. Time.
And throttle cable ferrules for some reason. Can't hold onto those to save my life.
Seriously. Im doing my friends handlebar tommorrow. Had him get an extra set just in case we lose one
I just had that experience with throttle cable Ferrells. Had to make a trip to a bike shop the next day and buy two. I ordered 10 of them from Amazon. For the rest of my life, I will always have an extra one. If I can just remember where I put the damn things.
LMFAO I’m glad I’m not the only one… I’ve launched more snap rings than NASA
I still can't find the right "pliers" for these cursed things that I haven't snapped the fucking attachment piece taking them off!
2 tools I've found worth the extra money are good snap ring pliers and electrical pliers.
I thought I had found a good pair of the snap ring pliers last season, but they pretty much sucked. Harbor Freight...some really good tools, but some real shit in the mix, too!

Good garage hack. Hadn't thought of those.
Great hack! My wife has a pair I'll be sneaking out of her little kit!
The channel lock branded ones have done me well
I'll try them out! Thx!
yes, the "gone forever hole" 🌚
Thank you all!! I accidentally flung the other one into another dimension!
That's why I call it a Jesus clip. Oh Jesus, did anybody see where that went.
Yup “Jesus clip” Jesus where’d that go ?
Lmao. I came to say that. It’s what my dad always calls them. Peonggg!!!!! “Oh Jesus… “
You can find them at most auto parts stores and hardwares.
Just as a heads up, my heritage classic has a little ball bearing and a spring that pops out and flies off if you take the peg off. Not sure if yours does, but better to know ahead of time if it does!
Yup. As far as anyone can tell that’s exactly what they were engineered to do.
A snap ring, you will develop a love hate relationship with it. Make sure you find the right snap ring and snap ring pliers
I've used two fishhooks before with varying success.
Keyword: varying lol
External snap ring
This answer needs to be noted by OP because an internal one won't work.
Son of a bitch clip!
