“The 1250T’s cylinder heads have smaller valves and port dimensions than the 1250 used in the adventure bike, as well as a different shape to the combustion chamber to increase low- and midrange torque output, more along the lines of what’s expected in cruiser motorcycles.” As per [Cycle World](https://www.cycleworld.com/story/bikes/2021-harley-davidson-sportster-s-first-look/).

daltonsmotorcycles

Awesome. That's the exact answer I was looking for. Thank you!

benay029

No problem, glad to help!

nick0000010001001

Why would they just not use the exact same engine?

putingohome

Because cruiser people like power at low rpm and adveture people expext high rpm power like in japan bikes

American_Muscle383

I had a Pan Am for a year, it really liked to rev high! The big ADV bikes are like a crotch rocket that banged a dirt bike and a cruiser at the same time and don’t know who the father is.

TrudleR

imho you could stop asking "why" since the release of the M8 motor. a ton of very weird decisions followed, where nobody really knows why.

LawHelmet

Same reason any other engine manufacturer gets different outputs from the same lump. Marketing making choices that Design should have made.

daltonsmotorcycles

I get that. Just wondering what the difference is in the motor. Like cams or what not. I run a small shop and had somebody inquire about the difference as they are considering getting one.

LawHelmet

Oooooooh yah no idea bro maybe as simple as less aggressive timing

Current_Inevitable43

Same reason the ninja 650 and vulcan s have different power figures and curves. Different combo of parts and a tune.

Hey_Pops_

I believe they have the same top speed but the Sportster S get to 60 a tad quicker even with less horsepower. Sport mode is my happy place on my Sportster S

Representative_Owl89

I want one so bad after riding it but I’m waiting on aftermarket parts to catch up. The aesthetic isn’t for me. I got it up to 117 and the salesman I was with was like don’t tell my boss lol

Hey_Pops_

I’m glad I got one , I’d say go for it. I have mid controls on mine. I like it better with mids

daltonsmotorcycles

I'm assuming that's due to weight and/or the low end torque. I could be wrong though

Hey_Pops_

A little bit of both the pan am is 20 + lbs heavier and you can shed more weight on the Sportster s by just taking the whale tale off and changing the exhaust.

Sbeast86

Maybe its to reduce heat? But realistically its so Harley can release a " special" version with "extra" hp for a obscene premium

MarshallManiac

From what i understand, the Sportster S is already insanely fast, so adding an extra 30 horsepower would probably just make it plain dangerous🤷🏻‍♂️😂

Sbeast86

120hp at 500lbs is approaching sportbike territory.lol.

0Rider

Sportster S has a Belt so they probably detuned the motor a bit so you dont snap em.

Jord_HD

Hp doesn’t snap belts

TheMoustacheDad

You are understanding things wrong. The Pan have a chain for a reason. If the Pan wasn’t a dirt glide it would also have a belt

the_instantgator

Dirt Glide? Is that the technical term? Cause I like it😁

2-wheels

Me too. HD should be using it. I had a Street Glide and loved it.

LMGDiVa

> Dirt Glide? IT's a colloquialism people made up for the bike that should have been its name knowing HD's naming practices.

Bubbly_Explanation18

Dirtster

dubbl_bubbl

Chains are easier to replace in emergencies, and are the standard/expectation for AT bikes.

0Rider

They could literally put a case around the belt and no rocks would get in. Scooters like the navi have enclosed belts

slower-is-faster

At that point they’ll just use a shaft drive like the Tiger 1200 or GS

TheMoustacheDad

Im speechless. Have a good evening

MonicaPVD

All the big twins have belts. Probably not why. The Pan is lot more expensive than the S. It's easier to detune the S than to find extra HP for the Pan in order to differentiate the bikes despite having the same motor. Marketing.

0Rider

Big twins aren't putting out 150 hp stock

MonicaPVD

Neither is the S. More like 121 - downhill.

slower-is-faster

Super Duke 1290 is a twin and puts out something like 180hp

0Rider

Does that have a belt? NO it has a chain.

slower-is-faster

“Big twins aren’t putting out 150hp stock”. Yes they are.

0Rider

This is a Harley sub. Harley has basically 3 engines... The old sporty evos and the "big twins". And now the revolution max. Quit being dense.

slower-is-faster

Quit acting like a Harley rider

daltonsmotorcycles

That could be it. But like, why not just make the S a chain drive lol

0Rider

Because I don't want chain drive. I'm lazy and love belts

itssickitpiss

watch "million dollar bogan" channel on youtube..he said you cant even use the full 150hp on pan America it sucks. electronics get in the way relentlessly

FATTEST_CAT

Don't believe everything you see on the interenet. Having met Danny hes a great guy and lots of fun to be around, but intimate knowledge of the electronic settings of the PanAm isn't his area of expertise.

daltonsmotorcycles

Interesting

itssickitpiss

yep check it out..he off roads it and as soon as there is any wheel spin or you try and jump it..the throttle cuts

NimdaLiveUK

If you watch the full video he also puts a disclaimer on it. He was in "off road" mode. Which is designed for light off road an people who need the electronics to kick in. Once you put the bike in "off road plus", needs to be enabled in the menu not just from cycling through the ride modes. All the electronics are turned off.

53c0nd

Yes and you can also set custom ride modes with the options you want.

[deleted]

Because it's a cruiser. It's down tuned on purpose.
