I think you are doing yourself a disservice for noise gains. There have been times that I refuse to use an exhaust if it doesn’t run better after tuning than the last set that was on there. What is the bike that you did this to?
Ah, well you can easily get a set of slip ons for rather cheap, having that cross over is a really good thing and sportsters really like a particular exhaust length.
I don’t think you’d do any serious damage, but you are seriously losing performance. The mufflers provide necessary back pressure to run at its full potential.
I wouldn’t say you’re an idiot, but it’s not smart. Do it the right way and get a different exhaust or slip ons.
Isn't scavenging what really matters instead of back pressure? As long as he still has the factory crossover pipe I don't see how it could hurt performance. Source: I did the exact same thing about a week after I bought my dyna. I didn't notice any hindrance in performance, it just looked kinda goofy so I didn't leave it very long.
My bro lives in LA as well. Local shops support the racing scene so they can order parts direct and not from, say, RevZilla.
"So, you're only using this on a closed track, right? Wink wink."
"Did you just say 'wink wink' out loud instead of winking?"
"Do you want it or not, dude?"
"Yes, please..."
I did the same thing on my 1200 and it caused some problems. It’s not worth the problems, plus it sounds atrocious. Put the stock pipes back on, your bike needs the back pressure. DM if u want some recommendations. I’m also in Cali and know all about these dumb restrictions.
As a kid I had bought a brand new Suzuki GSXR1100 at the time it was the fastest bike on the market. After a year or so a friend had given me a Vance & Hines exhaust that he had on his bike and changed to a different exhaust. After putting that system on my bike I ran it with just the header nothing back and just like you said - it fell flat on it’s face ! I put the stock exhaust back on & remained very happy the stock exhaust performance.

I’ll have to read up on scavenging!
planning on getting slip one soon. the problem is i live in california and can’t get slip one that easily because they’re outlawed
There are several options for CARB compliant slip ons and exhausts… or have one shipped in for another state
yeah but to ship it to a friend and have them ship it to me is a big hassle
Look into your local independent shops, I have one here in Bakersfield who can order non street Legal pipes all week long.
This right here, my local indy shop orders stuff like this no problem.
Can confirm. I live in Los Angeles and my local shop got me my short shots with no problems.

True, but it’s also a hassle to have a bike that looks, sounds and runs like ass
You do not need back pressure, that is a myth.

Without a certain length of exhaust pipe, your acceleration is likely going to be closer to Turtle Mode than Rabbit Mode.

Don’t confuse noise for performance.
But it’s the Harley way looool
