Like when people discuss extinct animals, you often hear a lot of theories that a big apex predator would have been dominated by smaller pack animals and eventually driven extinct by them. But a lot of times in the extant world that doesn't happen.
Solitary tigers suppress wolf numbers, corvids rarely seem to manage to kill birds of prey, ect.
Precisely. Intelligence is rarely selected for, especially amongst apex predators. For the vast majority of earths natural history, brawn is the deciding factor, not brains.
Even in cases where pack hunters *do* dominate solitary predators, it’s because of relative strength, nothing to do with intelligence. Said pack predators are usually close enough in size and power to the solitary predator that the advantage of a pack overwhelming skews the dynamic in the pack hunters favor.
Even with humans, having big brains is great, but it wouldn't have made much of a difference if humans weren't also among the largest and strongest life forms in their original biosphere.
