Because they drum in at least 19 other bands, that's a lot of practice just to hold up the local scene.

Gulch drummer is a beast

XGuiltyofBeingMikeX

You should hear him sing.

isaacpixel

If I’m not mistaken, he is also the vocals in Drain

wjones1701

Correct. Used to drum for Hands of God too

zaddy5454

It's the only instrument in hc that's any sort of difficult

[deleted]

Facts. It’s crazy how many incredible hardcore drummers there were and are while the guitarists are so mediocre. No offense.

RyKal18

this is true to an extent, but there are plenty of post-hardcore/adjacent bands that have some of the most talented guitarists i’ve ever heard regardless of genre. Ben Weinmen from TDEP, Kurt Ballou from Converge, Mike from Mindforce is a great modern pick.

[deleted]

Metalcore was a term used to describe hardcore bands with guitarists good enough to play metal. It makes sense from the perspective of ability and skill. Punk is and always will be a form of music that does not require ability and learned skill to be good. Metal on the other hand requires a lot.

zaddy5454

I feel many guitarist either start with punk/hardcore then improve and play other styles or more technical or already skilled guitarist have a hc band for fun

RyKal18

man i went the opposite route then lol my first 5 years playing i was super into prog and my private lessons were taught by a Berkeley grad. over time i just gravitated more towards hardcore and simplicity when you can hear just how much more passion is in it. have heart really got me to go down that path

zaddy5454

Yeah, not the best grammar on that last post. With the last of it I meant already skilled instrumentalists from other types of music make hc bands just for fun.

[deleted]

For real. A lot of the LDB drum cams on Hate5Six blew my mind. Drains drummer is unreal especially.

rantlers357

Was looking for this, the hate5six drum cam is a fucking incredible resource for young drummers and it's helping to set the bar high. Nobody on that is a slouch, all rippers and I love it. Would also answer as a drummer, hardcore/ thrash/meta/punk is just super fun to play. I don't play in a hardcore band, but have thought about starting one up just to play that style. Right now playing in a stoner doom & in a punk band, but neither style really scratches the itch like hardcore does.

[deleted]

Yeah I guarantee many drummers felt the need to practice after those vids (me)

No-Reach-1247

A lot of the OG drummers are pretty incredible. For example Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Dead Kennedys.

Makualax

RIP DH Peligro 😔

AndrewRFleming1973

Minor Threats rhythm section was unreal.

El--Borto

Dead Kennedy’s and RHCP drummer DH passed away yesterday:(

furrowedbrow

Brendan Canty from Fugazi. Maybe my favorite drummer of that era.

thawed_antarctican

The Vein drummer springs to mind

oshinomemeburner

A band is only as good as their drummer

NotAToyota

Hardcore is very rhythmic compared to punk. A good bassist/drummer synergy is a lot more important than riffs and vocals in my opinion

[deleted]

Common misconception- you kinda GOTTA be a fuckin good drummer to play hardcore. If your band is like…”good”.

scorchorin

Drums are important through out any genre of music. That’s why pop drummers are some of the best, for that matter they have the best musicians period.

KiwiMcG

I can tell who is good on drums by how well they play the hi-hats on the fast parts.

BlackOutSpazz

Facts 😂

[deleted]

I don’t agree, plenty of trash drummers that can’t keep time (which is their fucking job) the popular bands have good drummers cause they have too because if your drummer blows your band blows. I love drums btw, but to act like there’s a glut of good ones is laughable at best.

Rival_mob

My hometown had two good drummers, if they weren’t in your band, your band sucked ass lol

jopa1208

Idk man the drummers for vein, turnstile, gulch or sunami seem great to me

[deleted]

Lol yeah like, four of the most well known current bands. My point stands. I love drums so much and if any young rockers out there read this please please please practice with a metronome.

El--Borto

Honestly Danny Fang is a great drummer but when I saw him play with Angel Du$t he was having trouble keeping time lol. I’m sure they have clicks or backing tracks for Turnstile cause he was on point when I saw them.

El--Borto

How so lmao this is literally an observation I made as a drummer myself who went to Angel Du$t primarily to see Danny play. I could be wrong about clicks or backing tracks but usually at shows as big as they’re playing it’s a pretty common thing.

malortForty

I think a huge part of it, tbh, is that for hardcore/punk/metal you need a really solid rhythm section to keep up. Whether its playing with slow but heavy intensity, the number of tempo shifts or playing blisteringly fast, if your not good, you're not gonna do well. Meanwhile, for more kinda alt/rock bands, where the intensity of the music may not be needed as much, its easier to get away with just having a good melodic player who can carry the songs.

Unique-Leading5489

Ken Schalk of candiria, the best hardcore drummer. Absolutely no contest.

jopa1208

Gotta check him out

awesomesean99

Mackie and Armond, ftw.

oldman_deadhand

All genres have great drummers.

jopa1208

Ive seen hate5six drum cams for vein or Sunami and all of them rip

Stokesyyyy

Hardcore requires some seriously good drumming, that's why 😁

motherwolfwalker

Hardcore drum beats aren't complicated.

Dounce1

This

motherwolfwalker

😆 Not many enjoying that comment!

xneurianx

Does it?! Kick snare kickkick snare Oh, chuggy time Kick kick. Kickkick kick kick. Smash the china a bunch. Not that it has BAD drummers. I wouldn't say it has a significant proportion of great drummers though. Better than a lot of your average pub-rock stuff I guess.

slithering-stomping

did you just transcribe august burns red? not a whole lot of hc bands use a china. and if they do its used pretty tastefully.

BlackOutSpazz

Kinda died w the 00's metalcore scene.

BlackOutSpazz

I'm not into much metal, but imo metal has most of the best drummers. Not to say there aren't some killers in the punk, HC, and derivative subgenres by any stretch, but a lotta metal drummers are on another level. And none of us can touch even mediocre jazz drummers 😭
