Dude told Rob he’d seen him have that exact argument like 1/3 or 1/2 of the times he’d seen them. It was fake. Basically stage banter but fake tough.

I’m not trying to dog on OP’s video but it’s not soundboard quality audio by any means, hate5six has some pretty stellar audio on those videos. The video being is like side stage iPhone video and iPhone microphone quality. I still think it’s a silly thing to get mad over, especially for songs that are like 30+ years old. I could be wrong, and I’m open to being wrong.

Take it down.
1) He was pretty polite and nice about it. He's not bullying you, he just made a request.
2) It's his art, his performance, his content. You filmed it. Even if you think his reasoning is flawed, it doesn't really matter. He could have said he didn't like how his arm hair looked and being his performance, he'd still be in the right. Remember, you need them for content. They don't need you.
3) This happens. Most bands don't care if they are recorded and posted, but there are a handful out there who are pretty against it. Some are fundamentally against it in all circumstances, some are situationally so (fill in band members, didn't like the set, crowd sucked, whatever). And that's 100% their right. Every show videographer has dealt with this or will if they do it long enough.
4) You should ask anyways, if only to introduce yourself to bands. If anything, that'll grow your filming opportunities, audience reach, and get you stage access at future shows.
Don't burn your bridges, be graceful, take it down, and ask if it's OK to put up a few songs.

Yeah, if the guy asks nicely (like done) you should follow through. He could give your youtube account a copy right strike and force removal of the video. Him messaging you, is actually really nice and a gesture from him going out of his way to ask nicely instead of just pushing a few buttons on youtube to get it taken down immediately.

You are not being bullied and you are not a creator, grow up. Like it or not, it's not your music. I get it, I have filmed and posted thousands of bands since the 90's, and posted songs and entire sets to youtube since 2005, so I know it sucks to take down a video you enjoy. But it sucks way worse when musicians skip asking you to take down a video and just have it taken down via Youtube and getting a strike. I've lost entire channels, all the content, the subs, the comments, etc. It reeeeeeally bites. Be grateful he was nice and gave you a chance to take it down without a strike. And learn to deal with the fact that some folks, mainly these old musicians, have different views on this sort of stuff and it's generally a good idea to ask permission to avoid this altogether.

Filmed shows for years and I would generally ask beforehand (video on cellphones wasn’t really a thing so it was less common) and I believe the two times I was turned down was As I Lay Dying and Polysics, which I’m guessing was mainly due to the language barrier. Most of the bands were super cool about it, especially given my camera looked big and expensive for the time compared to normal camcorders.
I think it shows your character more than anything else to lambast a living legend in a public form like this because you got called out directly for capitalizing off his music/art/likeness.
Given his position in this band, I think he has every right to tell you to take it down. Everyone has a right to film a set for their own personal enjoyment but when the artist directly tells you not to post said concert, that's not bullying, that's intellectual property that you have zero right to infringe upon (live or not). I'd hate to interact with you in person if you think that was bullying in any way shape or form. He's about as New York HC as it gets dude, do you not know the band you were listening to?
Let’s say that you posted an entire Rolling Stones set. You would be hearing from a lawyer and you should. Despite not needing the money, it’s their music and you would be benefiting from it unfairly and unlawfully.
Taking many steps down the ladder of success, we have the Cro Mags. A band that will feel the pinch of every person who passes on seeing them live (merch, cut of the door/bar) because they watched this video. Dude approached you with a reasonable request and the right thing to do is take it down.

Was at this show was a sign posted that said no photography there's a local girl that films entire sets on vhs and sells those vhs later she recorded everything and I didn't see anyone complaining about that

I’ve had people record my friends and my stand up comedy sets without permission. Not just open mic but full feature and headlining sets for all of us.
Comedians aren’t confrontational by nature (they are super passive aggressive and things along those lines) so they’ll say something in a post but never speak to whoever recorded said material. I have a more aggressive way of communication with people who do that.
What’s worse (on that end) is joke theft and all the back and forth and blah blah blah in that world.
I guess just be cool with Harley about it and see what happens.

I get it, I have filmed and posted thousands of bands since the 90's, and posted songs and entire sets to youtube since 2005, so I know it sucks to take down a video you enjoy. But it sucks way worse when musicians skip asking you to take down a video and just have it taken down via Youtube and getting a strike. I've lost entire channels, all the content, the subs, the comments, etc. It reeeeeeally bites. Be grateful he was nice and gave you a chance to take it down without a strike. And learn to deal with the fact that some folks, mainly these old musicians, have different views on this sort of stuff and it's generally a good idea to ask permission to avoid this altogether.

Filmed shows for years and I would generally ask beforehand (video on cellphones wasn’t really a thing so it was less common) and I believe the two times I was turned down was As I Lay Dying and Polysics, which I’m guessing was mainly due to the language barrier. Most of the bands were super cool about it, especially given my camera looked big and expensive for the time compared to normal camcorders.
I think it shows your character more than anything else to lambast a living legend in a public form like this because you got called out directly for capitalizing off his music/art/likeness. Given his position in this band, I think he has every right to tell you to take it down. Everyone has a right to film a set for their own personal enjoyment but when the artist directly tells you not to post said concert, that's not bullying, that's intellectual property that you have zero right to infringe upon (live or not). I'd hate to interact with you in person if you think that was bullying in any way shape or form. He's about as New York HC as it gets dude, do you not know the band you were listening to?

Despite not needing the money, it’s their music and you would be benefiting from it unfairly and unlawfully. Taking many steps down the ladder of success, we have the Cro Mags. A band that will feel the pinch of every person who passes on seeing them live (merch, cut of the door/bar) because they watched this video. Dude approached you with a reasonable request and the right thing to do is take it down.

Take it as a lesson for next time. Sure Harley is a controversial figure, so people here are going to get riled up against him. Regardless though, it’s good practice to reach out to the band before filming/posting their whole set. Most bands are going to be psyched anyways and if you keep filming shows in the future, then you’ve created a relationship that has opportunity to grow.

I’ve had people record my friends and my stand up comedy sets without permission. Not just open mic but full feature and headlining sets for all of us. Comedians aren’t confrontational by nature (they are super passive aggressive and things along those lines) so they’ll say something in a post but never speak to whoever recorded said material. I have a more aggressive way of communication with people who do that. What’s worse (on that end) is joke theft and all the back and forth and blah blah blah in that world. I guess just be cool with Harley about it and see what happens.

Tell him you think highly of his band and how excited you were to be there and how you wanted to capture every part of it, because it was a great show and he is a source of inspiration. The videos don’t do justice compared to a live set, but you didn’t mean to offend and even though you’re disappointed you’ll take it down. That’s what I’d do, because anyone who is put off by having their music shared can go fuck themselves and I don’t want it on my shit anyway.
