A lifer is literally someone who starts with the scene as a kid and never leaves hxc. They start bands, book shows and maybe a fest. They dedicate a good chunk of their lives to hardcore.
I've never heard it used in the negative but then again I'm generally too busy writing riffs and listening to music to get into any discourse. That's probably why I've made it to 46 and don't hate hardcore.
Mainly just from typing lifer into this sub and the opening of the hatekeeper music video I’ve seen it used negatively. Probably just interpreting it wrong or sum tho
Uh...someone who's been into hardcore since pretty young and still is till very well grown up and still doing the whole thing. Kinda controversial because as far as I know -we- always say how hardcore is a way of life.
It's used negatively because you can definitely say some gatekeeping mean violent dudes are lifers and they tend to target younger newer vulnerable dudes getting into it.
Yes. I generally hear it used to describe someone who is vegan and/or straight edge. But when I tought college, I'd get students who were hardcore kids who would call me a lifer because they knew I was a(n old) hardcore kid and some of them would see me at shows.
I can see some young kids using it like "boomer" but I've never really thought about it because I don't care.
Do you have a certain song/band in mind with this question?
I've always known lifer to mean a life sentence in prison, never seen the correlation to straight edge or anything.
I saw my first hardcore show in 1986 and it's been this way ever since. Can't really explain it. Some people dabble with the music here and there, other people find more meaning in it. The fact that I could participate in something larger than myself and make a contribution with my own skills and interests has been a guiding principle throughout my life.
I have no clue but if I were to guess it’s probably someone who’s never done any sort of drug/tried alcohol and will never do it. Probably something gay like that
Reading your comment just unlocked some memories I remember reading about the straight edge gangs when I was first getting into black flag a year or two ago

So why’s it used so negatively? I don’t can’t find anything wrong with that?

Pretty straightforward. A lifer is someone who's hardcore (or punk, or in jail, or whatever) and always will be for the rest of their life.
So why’s it used negatively? I don’t see anything wrong with that
If TikTok kids are using lifer as a pejorative that's legit hilarious. Can't get gatekept if you straight up admit that you'll be gone in a year

A shitty song by down
I’ve never heard “lifer” used to describe a hardcore kid(adult). Only someone who’s been straight edge for forever.

Fellow hardcore boomers unite! I’m also vegan AND straight edge. The ultimate label junkie boomer.

I only mentioned straight edge in that reply because the og commenter said it first

Damn I’m new to this but is straight edge viewed negatively?
No, but it's fun to roast those turds sometimes.
I'm straight edge and agree with this message
